Hey hi, Clare Torrie did the vocals on the album, but these young Ladies do a fine job here, Some say this is suppose to represent in raw emotion the transitions into leaving life, the stages of dying starting with denial, anger, fear, resistance and finally acceptance, many dispute that claim, but all in all it is an awesome tune for sure !! I have been enjoying accompanying you on your journey down the Pink Floyd rabbit hole, I'm sure that if you check out the entire Pulse concert, you will enjoy the visuals with the music, every song in this concert is awesome, keep them coming my Friend, God Bless

I was there that night, and while all three ladies had totally nailed it on every other track, I must confess to having my fingers crossed for them when they went into this one. Taking on something so iconic that Clare did on the album in a single improv take, and yet having to make it theirs, not just just learning and singing back the original, takes some serious chops. I need not have worried :)

Clare Torry improvised her vocals in "The Great Gig in the Sky" all on her own with no direction from the band and was only paid a standard fee of 30 British Pounds for her work and contribution to the composition. Years later, she sued Pink Floyd claiming she helped compose the song and was entitled to royalty rights for it. The court awarded her a half share of the copyright and she then settled out of court with the band for an undisclosed amount for her rights to the song.

This song was performed live at the funeral of Richard Wright, Pink Floyd's keyboardist, in 2008. Durga Mc Broom, a backing singer on the Pink Floyd World Tour, was asked by Rick Wright to do this during his lifetime. As I am in personal contact with Durga Mc Broom, she confirmed this to me. Unconfirmed, however, is the fact that she was accompanied by Jon Lord, keyboardist of Deep Purple, on the piano during the performance.

Late as usual. I'll spare you all repeating my Praises of Pink Floyd.
Earlier today I heard a song hadn't heard since the 70s when it made its 2nd or 3 comeback.
Date wise it's going to seem odd but it's definitely worth it.
The song is from 1931. And it is by Harry Roy and his orchestra. It is swing at its Hay Day and the piano playing is off the charts. It will have you moving and grinning.
    The song is called
    My Pet Pussy.
And much like Pink Floyd it begins with sound effects and a cat meowing. It goes crazy off the rails from there.lol
When you listen to the song remember it's over 90 years old.
Fortunately someone took the time to clean it up and put it on RUclips.
It's even better than Aveeno Ray and the St Louis Blues with stringy the puppet. It was the first use of a tox box that was invented by Alvino Rey in the 1930s He is the one who invented the electric guitar with Gibson.
There is a video of that since they made a music video back then which was played in video jukeboxes.
Like quadraphonic was too expensive to reproduce.

To give it slightly more context. She was a session singer at the time and it was very common to have a musician come in to play/sing a given part, pay their fee and move on. The £ 30 was a standard fee and would be around £400+ now. She argued many years later that the way she did it, there was no existing lyrics or melody line, she should be credited as co-writer. I think most would agree as probably did Pink Floyd as they agreed out of court. Copyright awareness is something that grew over the years. In retrospect you could think Torry could have sued earlier and Pink Floyd certainly could have compensated her years earlier than when the lawsuit came around, but at the time of recording it wasn't a strange thing and certainly not a conscious rip-off or anything. Not by the band members anyway.

So this Pulse concert is 21 years after the song was released on Pink Floyd epic, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" album, so these lovely ladies are NOT the original singer on the album.
Clare Torry is the person who did the original recording in 1973. She did 3 takes and the band took parts of all 3 to make the final recording that's on the album.
At this point of Pink Floyds' career, (post 1985), there were 3 members of the band Pink Floyd, they are the 3 older guys. Dave Gilmour, guitar, (he's playing Slide guitar in this song), Nick Mason, drums, and Rick Wright, keyboards. Roger Waters, one of the co-founders of Pink Floyd in 1964, quit the band in 1985.
The rest of the people onstage here are Floyds Touring band for that period. Clare Torry did tour with Pink Floyd on occasion in the 1980s
