Truth is (IMO), Clare was never able to come close to reproducing her studio version. The one youtube video of her doing it w/Floyd live is almost painful to watch. Them using these trio of backing singers on tour was a great choice by the band...great performance.

I was not expecting a male vocalist doing it on Gilmour’s last tour but it was good. We all will die in our own way with our own voices

All of the singers had serious solo careers doing soul, R&B and jazz vocals. It took all three to deliver something worthy of Claire Torrey's original, but they did it. Wonderful reaction.

I saw Pink Floyd in Memorial Stadium, Clemson, SC back in May 1994. It was the Division Bell tour. Single best concert ever. If ever you see the tribute band called Brit Floyd near by I highly recommend you go see them as it will unfortunately, be the closest version of Pink Floyd you’ll see live. I’ve seen them twice now and will be going again. I’m enjoying your reactions. You should try some Genesis. Also great live.
Great concert the entire Pulse concert. This song is about accepting death and is dived in three parts during the acceptance. Yes none of them are Claire Tory and a lot of the commenters have told you the names of each one of the three! Claire was known by Alan Parsons of the Allen Parsons Project who does a lot of music on his own somewhat similar to Pink Floyd music. He was engineering the Dark Side of the Moon album brilliantly I might add and he knew Claire Tory. The Pink Floyd band members were looking for a vocalist to vocalize over Rick Wright's musical piece for Great Gig in the sky and Alan Parsons suggested her and she did it in just two and a half takes on her own. She started out singing things like ooh baby ooh baby they didn't want that and then she decided on her own to make her voice like another instrument and bang came out with a brilliant piece on her own. She's a 5 ft tall little Irish girl which I think is really cool! A few of the commenters left website to go see the interview with her which I think you would enjoy! The original by Claire was on the spot the three vocalists were trying to sing as close to the original as they could.
Its common for live concerts to have sessional artists especially if the studio album had a guest who would be unavailable. The nature of this kind of track usually allows for some variation which the audience doesnt mind, however this sort of vocal is not uncommon in certain operatic scores (which would aslo sometimes have variation). I think the original direction was express this emotion here then this emotion there in time and tune with the music.

Dark Side of the Moon was released in 1973. This concert took place 21 years later in 1994. Obviously Clare would have aged just like the rest of the guys. These are all relatively young women. I have seen Clare sing it with the band, but she actually doesn't do it as well [live] as these young ladies. They killed it!!

Is this song about Death?....NO. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The doorman-janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.
I tend to agree. When I listen to the album DSOTM, the two tracks that I miss out are this one and 'Money'. All the others I love, although 'On The Run' is also almost missable to be honest, but it's a bit of a novelty to listen to occasionally. The finale to DSOTM is sensational.

Is this song about Death?....NO. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The doorman-janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.

I love Pink Floyd but always hated this track. Incessant wailing. I can't cope...
I tend to agree. When I listen to the album DSOTM, the two tracks that I miss out are this one and 'Money'. All the others I love, although 'On The Run' is also almost missable to be honest, but it's a bit of a novelty to listen to occasionally. The finale to DSOTM is sensational.

Absolutely NO disrespect to Claire but I like this one better. Pink Floyd concerts are always better than studio. Highly recommend a NON band video with 8 million views on you tube.
