There are 3 female back up singers. This song features exclusively the back up singers. The band knows how good their ladies are and want them to enjoy the spotlight. David Gilmour is playing a Steel Guitar, horizontal instrument with 6 strings and a metal slider used to key the notes
Compared to many other reaction guides, you nailed it: Not too much, but relevant, interruption. Intelligent and thought-through remarks. Good experience, thank you
Richard Wright requested this song for his funeral during his lifetime. He asked Durga Mc Broom, a backing singer from the Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing the song at his funeral. There is still an unconfirmed rumor that Durga was accompanied on the piano by none other than John Lord from Deep Purple.
Back in the glory years of rock music there was an art to making a great album. A collection of songs that flow and work together to achieve a sum greater than it's parts. This album (Dark side) was one of the best ever. 🎶🙂
Dark Side of the Moon is one album I've owned on a multiple of recorded media. I originally bought it on vinyl in high school in 1973. Since then I've had it on 8-track, cassette, CD, Original Master virgin vinyl and Super audio CD. This album never gets old. In it all truthfulness this whole ablum should be listened to in it's entirety, in the dark and with a great pair of over the ear headphones. Oh that's David Gilmour, lead guitarist for Pink Floyd, playing the slide guitar.
You have a listen to this from the original album The Dark Side Of The Moon. Clare Torry did the original. She was pulled in on a Sunday as a session singer and was given a rough brief on what the song was about. She nailed it in 2 takes, I think. Then off she went. The rest is history. It's about life, gradually descending into death. Hence the angrier and more intense first half with a dying person refusing to go gently into that good night. The second half is gentler, as the dying person gives into the inevitable and fades away. What David Gilmore is playing is a type of slide guitar. He's got about 30 different types (maybe not many. Let's say lots). Or did have, until the auction last year. He sold 126 of his guitars. Raised around $24 million for charity. Sorry, I digress🤣🤣
Surely you already know the original recording was all Clare Torry - the blonde who opened in this particular live video. She was the star in this vid and the two amazing black ladies were just guest singers who did a very great impression of Clare's own parts in the 2nd half of the song.
@@karelkerstiens8251 Not to sure what you are meaning. The blonde girl singing is Sam Brown. The other two are Durga McBroom and Claudia Fontaine. Clare only ever did the original recording
@@karelkerstiens8251 Definitely Sam Brown in this one. Clare would be in her 50s when this was done. Also I was at this concert. Okay looked it up. Clare would have been 47 by the time of the Pulse concert
@@karelkerstiens8251 The three singers on this track were Sam Brown, Durga McBroom and Claudia Fontaine, in that order. Clare Torry sang the whole song on the original album track. As bazkeen said.
The first singer is called Sam Brown, she is a recording artist in her own right ( 6 studio albums ),Best known single is "Stop", which was released in 1988 and reached no.4 in the UK charts when it was re-released in 1989. Not only has she worked with Pink Floyd, she has also worked with Jools Holland, Gary Moore, George Harrison, Nick Cave, the list goes on
Not bad, but there's nothing like the original studio recording. Like someone else already said, the original was done by a certain Clare Torry who wasn't told much about what it was all about. She didn't know Pink Floyd and wasn't too keen on the session just because she didn't know what was expected of her. She was told to just do something and, well, she did.
It's not comparable though. The original is fantastic, but when we were stood there live in front of the band and the lighting effects, our jaws just hit the ground, stunning.
I was going to recommend the same until I realized that you had one year old twins and a dog. Now, I suggest that you get in the Lazy Boy and listen to an Enya or Kitaro CD. You’ll thank me after you wake up.
Surely you already know the original recording was all Clare Torry - the blonde who opened in this particular live video. She was the star in this vid and the two amazing black ladies were just guest singers who did a very great impression of Clare's own parts in the 2nd half of the song.
Nice reaction and a great song, but think with Pink Floyd it's always better to do their studio versions first, particularly with this track which is a ONE woman masterpiece.
Sam Brown and the Ladies smoked Clare Torry. They had one take. One opportunity to deliver. This is LIVE! No remastering just live performance. No sound engineer to hide behind. I hear people blather on about Claire Torry. Where was she? Why wasn't she on this tour? How much time and effort did it take to remaster her performance. These 3 ladies killed it Live. The most remarkable thing about about this song is how Gilmour and the boys restrained themselves so the Ladies could have and hold the spotlight. Giving them the glory they deserve.
That's a steel slide guitar....you should checkout, "One of These Days" from the '94 Pulse Album-Division Bell Tour live...You will really get to see what a steel slide guitar sounds like...David Gilmour makes it scream!!...I think you would love it!!....😃💥👍
Wow thankyou for another splendid reaction, and certainly the best song for raw emotion IMO. More proof that you don't always require lyrics. Please try reacting to Comfortably Numb., Coming Back To Life ,and Sorrow from this same concert. They are on another level!
The original version is better not to say that the lady's singing is good but Clare Tory who did the original vocals for this song is outstanding. The song deals with death and as the singer vocalizes the fight and as it goes the end the vocals get softer as the acceptance of death is near. A very sad song but one we all have to face
Def do the album Dark Side of the Moon BUT best in order (tracks are like chapters in a book.... you can read random chapters but you miss the overall story) If you want to do another single track then you can always do either Comfortably Numb or Run Like Hell from the same Pulse concert, both taken from the album The Wall. Definitely worth having the lyrics to hand 😉
SSome of the reasons it is split into 3 sections are you have different moods to each section which suit different sounds. Also, very importantly, for 1 singer to use that much power live, for 10 minutes is very tiring and stressful on their vocal chords. So they decided to work together to share the load
Please give the original studio version a listen. Whilst this version is good and the the three girls (Sam Brown, Durga McBroom and Claudia Fontaine) do an outstanding job, once you hear Clare Torry sing the original, you'll understand why it's so beloved by fans. Here's a link ruclips.net/video/cVBCE3gaNxc/видео.html Thank you for a great reaction, I can't wait for you to do more Pink Floyd.
The three ladies are actually guest singers. Although live performances add a lot extras to a song I personally like the female vocals on the studio version better. They are good in their time but they need three different singers to cover it all while Floor Jansen could do covering it all on her own. When Pink Floyd starts to play their music we called their style Psychodelic. To get a bit more familiar with Pink Floyd try ‘Comfortably Numb’ ruclips.net/video/J8fFVOoqepc/видео.html from their The Wall album.
I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.
Hey, if you love this version...yes, you should check out the original one. But the best version comes from the 'delicate sound of thunder'-tour! ruclips.net/video/ITSKb0uX3Qw/видео.html
Definitely agreeing that the original is the best, Clare was just phenomenal (take the advice, listen to Dark Side of the Moon end to end) but ... incredible job by Sam Brown nonetheless.
