PLEASE NOTE: By enabling the custom scaler in Open XR. You stop the auto control system taking over giving you even LOWER visual clarity. This means you can then TURN UP render scaling in the sim itself. Giving you better performance. Give it a whirl!
Hey, thank you for another great video. I have a question regarding Reverb G1. I'm into buying a VR headset, but I'm on a tight budget so G2 is out of the question. I'll be using hmd mainly for playing flight and racing sims. As someone who owned G1, would you consider 2nd hand Reverb G1 pro as a good buy for €275 or should I opt for new Quest 2 instead?

Wow. Thanks! From zero to hero in 10 minutes! I just followed your settings and, wow again! I'm getting about 60s over New York with i9 9900k, RTX 2080ti and G2. Merry Christmas!
I've been flying in VR all night yesterday.. Quite an exciting experience! X-plane still has higher framerates and the controller support though, but the beauty and coverage f MSFS more than makes up for that. Hi Steve Thanks for the info. I had my first go with the G2 and MSFS this afternoon - brilliant ! I’ve got a (very lapsed) PPL on C150, 172 & 180s and the 3D effect when landing is so realistic. Then went low-flying in the Aeromachi, some serious hooliganism over the Peak District ! I’ve spent some 2500 hrs of my 3200 hr career as a FJ Nav, mostly on Buccs in UK, Germany and two Red Flags and I found MSFS in VR amazing. Setting Grass to low covers the ortho with a realistic layer, something missing on ORBXs TE scenery. Yes, there are the issues with totally wrong building placement in rural areas, and I kept getting what looked like upside-down suet puddings which disappeared as you got closer. But once I’ve got the setting right I think this will be fantastic. Just looking forward to getting RW in the sim in the future. Only problem is that varifocals don’t quite work, so waiting for the fixed-focus lenses I ordered a couple of weeks ago. This is way ahead of where I thought MSFS would be at this stage of its development and am really looking forward to Steve’s continued updates. I’d like to draw your attention to the fact that SteamVR sets the resolution correctly for the G2. This is has been addressed by HP and they confirm that 100% in SteamVR is the correct setting for the G2. Thanks for the vid.
@@tuna_6548 no it doesnt, as the poster above said it is correct in steamvr, it is all to do with barrel rendering or some such thing, another vr channel did a video explaining it all very clearly
@@tuna_6548 Check out this video from Karl Gosling explaining why the render resolution needs to be higher than the native resolution of the headset ruclips.net/video/hQi6kz-4_Jw/видео.html
Yes it is the correct setting which works out at about 18M pixels which is 2.5x 4K resolution hence the performance hit. I am using about 60 to 70% which is still higher than 4K.
Thanks for another useful video. I set the custom render scale to 70 in openXR and made sure it's the runtime being used. I have a few questions though: 1. What resolution should I run in per-application video settings in steamVR for MSFS? 2. What Render scale should i set in MSFS itself? 3. Should i use the steamVR BETA?
I can happily say that I will be watching your DCS / G2 videos again because you and a few others made me pull the plug on the G2, I ordered it yesterday and I hope the wait is not to bad. Thx for sharing !
All these things worked (as far as pertaining to my outdated Rift S) and the enjoyment for FS2020 just blossomed. Sure the graphics and detail aren't as good as they could be but that is the fun in this program and the fact that there is so much more to come in the future. Thanks for posting along with the MSFS boards.
Hi Steve, many thanks for these VR Setup vids. They have provided me with an ideal baseline for my G2 and undoubtedly saved me hours of frustration. They also showed me setup tips I wouldn’t have even thought of. Flying the Cub over Southampton was smooth with acceptable compromises on visual quality. These Christmas presents from you are greatly appreciated. Top job and Merry Christmas to you both.
Great info Steve!!! Thank you and a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and all of those who follow you here! Right after your 1st release about the new MSFS 2020 upgrade to VR I went into Steam and the big update was waiting for me. Thanks for all your hard work and efforts in helping us sort out our settings!
You mentioned something about "preview mode" being on. What do you mean by that? Big thanks for all the help. I finally bought MSFS yesterday as I have been waiting for VR support. I was part of the early beta testing, but found myself never using it as I am hooked on VR and Xplane works great. I have a G2, a 1080ti and 9900k, so I look forward to getting this dialed in.
Thank you!! I'd tried so many other recommended settings videos for my G2 and they all gained only fractional improvement. This was the game changer! PS. I bought the G2 based on all your recommendations and have never looked back since, it's like stepping into another world with that headset on! So again, thank you, flight simulation is finally there.
does openxr need to be running in the background when u play in vr or does it allways run in background on ya pc...so u dont have to boot it up everytime

This is something I would like to know as well. Will do some Google searching and see if I can find an answer somewhere
A note on the registry edit. In Open XR, on the Home tab, there is a button "Set active runtime". When clicked it sets the registry setting mentioned, so no need to do it manually (for the G1/G2 in WMR at least) Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1 Value: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MixedRealityRuntime.json
Steve, when you rub openxr, do you have the windows mixed reality app on as well when you play nsf2020? Or is it only the openxr you have open? Cheers!
Is this only for Microsoft Flight Simulator or does the OpenXR work with all SteamVR titles on the G2? It is already confusing making settings in Windows and SteamVR for the G2 and this appears to add yet another layer?
I believe it depends on which one controls OpenXR. If you use WMR for OpenXR, the motion smoothing / reprojection in SteamVR will be disabled and the WMR will be used instead. The SS can be controlled in both. So you can choose if you prefer the WMR or SteamVR reprojection by choosing which OpenXR runtime is the default. To get good performance in MSFS2020 you want the WMR to be in control of OpenXR.
@@mvierssen Thank you for clarifying the confusion. It was unclear whether they are applied independently and stack or which takes priority. Seems it will always be trial and error to find the best solution per game.
After trying out G2, Rift S l, Quest 2 Link and Quest 2 wireless Virtual Desktop. Quest 2 VD > All 'yet' Again. It runs worse on G2 by quite a bit but with a horrid small sweet spot compared with Q2. Sharper but image distortion and poor frame rate makes it the worst of all imo.
I totally disagree, you seem to have the wrong hardware, that can not drive the G2, i am using an rtx 3080 and amd 5900, and while the Quest 2 already looked very nice for me, the G2 was way better visually and soundwise (despite me using DAS on Quest 2) the clearity and fov for me was from the get go breathtaking - framerate was about the same. The horrid small sweet spot i can not follow, what I see is that because of the sharpness, you notice the difference more when you focus on that part, but the actual quality is still way better than the Quest 2 with its video compression artifacts and smaller fov. - G2 > Q2 > the rest, but that is just my opinion/experience.
Agreed, G2 is Janky compared to Oculus. I'm deciding to send my G2 back because i was spending more time reconfiguring than actual playing games and MFS2020 performance is the deciding factor. Even using the crappy WMR software my Quest 2 is much more pleasing to use, if Flight Simulator eventually has native Oculus support it's getting even better, while G2 is stick at a rock. Sweetspot is awful for me too. Quest 2 all the way. (I won't even go in to the controllers and tracking).
Yeah. I had to put my G2 down after trying it with my Quest 2. I think i may return my G2 unfortunately. I've had nothing but problems. I've tried to like it but it just doesn't live up to the hype. Quest 2 is the shocker here, best all around HMD i've ever owned. It was supposed to be a filler until my G2 arrived too. How things have turned around.
I was thinking about buying a G2 for FS2020 but i'm hearing more and more that the Quest 2 is the best sweet spot for the overall experience . In terms of clarity to performance. Even the other VRsim guy uses the Q2 over his G2 for this game; ruclips.net/video/RquMTELfZac/видео.html
All right, found out how to update it. So for everyone that wonders how to get the same ver as our host, you have to go to the Microsoft store, look for OpenXR in the search field, and then click on the 3 horizontal dots ... located to the right of the LAUNCH button and select update. Voila
I'm using a different VR headset, but if you have not done so, go to Nvidia Control panel and turn off all AA settings, and pick AA from in game. This should give you a good boost in FPS.
Steve, do you run the sim full screen or windowed? Don't know if it makes a difference though. My 3090 is having a hard time keeping my Quest 2 at a stable frame rate. And my settings are quite low. It looks awesome indeed especially taking off from Lukla Nepal(VNLK) ;-)
Great tip Steve. Got some smooth (ish) gameplay if not in built up areas......but New York.... kills it! An extraordinarily demanding game! If only the 3080's where available.....but even these are gonna suffer during these early days.
Thanks for the video! Before I begin tweaking lots of things, I would like to get a performance baseline of my system as it is today, like FPS and frametimes in MSFS. What is the most reliable way to do that in your opinion?
@@intrepid_wandering Well that launches steam automatically. Maybe I need to watch this video again.. It probably answers my question when I think about it
Have Oculus software open, launch game in Steam, once in you can click the VR mode button or use keyboard command as already stated here. It doesn't open Steam VR for me.
If you bought from microsoft store - launch like a regular game. Your wmr should be running in background. Inside the game in options there is a tab on a bottom says VR. You can switch to VR there. Thats for HP reverb.
Just here to say thank you as I changed mine that was defaulting to SteamVR for my Oculus Quest 2 to the Oculus json in regedit and it was night and day, I could bump up basically all my settings and a smooth flying experience now!
Hi folks, I'm rather new to all the tweaking and fiddeling around with VR stuff, so I'm curious... Does the custom scaler mess with my other VR games as well? Thanks in advance! :) Edit -> I'm using the Rift S, by the way.
So this is just for WMR headsets? Any tips for framerate with SteamVR headsets? I have a high end system but my framerate is garbage with basically everything on LOW except textures. RTX 3080 / 5800X :'(
Reduce SS in SteamVR to 50-70% 2:19 and give it a try. You will lose sharpness because you need more than 50% for the barrel distortion correction but it’s okay for the G2 at least.
Thanks for the video. For me though, I found that just setting motion to on and leaving the custom render scale off in OpenXR worked well enough. Of course I had to drop the render scale in the sim. But something that I found out was causing me a lot of trouble that might help some of those people with the higher end cards that can't believe there frames are so bad was to make sure and turn off hardware acceleration under Windows setting>graphics. I found out that was causing trouble for me when I tried following someone's advice for tweaking stuff and I turned it on. After that my frames were terrible. The other thing they had me change was my game profile in the NVidia settings. I reverted that back to default too- but it wasn't until I got rid of the hardware acceleration that I got things back to normal. Hope it helps someone 👍
I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 2070 super. I run it on Quest 2 with V Link. I put rendering resolution in the game at 100% (I am a sucker for clarity) and in the Oculus software at 1.2 (1.7 is the native resolution). I can run it at a smooth 36 fps in the air and non crowded places. When I go down in the city I reduced rendering res to 90% and I can still hit 28 fps. This game is AMAZING!! I am also lucky to have my brother's Saitek Yoke with rudders. I mapped what I need in the Cessna 152 and MY GOD how it feels real. I flew over my city for an hour yesterday until 2 am. I just couldn't stop.
Yes, after a long time of waiting for it, my G2 arrived at my doorstep yesterday! I was blown away with what MSFS but also Aerofly look like in VR, and have been flying for an hour or so before I felt a bit weird... I have read about motion sickness, but I thought "nah that won't happen to me" Well I guess it did get to me so I guess VR requires some training time for me, since it's my first ever experience with VR and I haven't worn a VR-headset before. Anyway I still have a 1080 (no TI) in my system and I wonder if changing it for a used 1080 TI would make much difference. But I will first try to push the 1080 to it's limits so thank you for this video that will help me do it.
Just a few questions... There are differences between your setup for VR in MFS2020 and your OpenXR and mine MFS202 and OpenXR. First MFS2020 i don't have the same VR settings and in OpenXR i dont have the Costom Render Scale??? How do you enable the customer scaler??? And then a more ignoring problem in WMR. When i fly in AirHauler 2, i would like t leave my cockpit and go to make coffe or so, and leave is for a vouple of hours depending the flight time, but VR always closes down after about 20 minutes, Is there anyway to correct this??? I have a HP Reverb Pro
i honestly don't know how Laminar can actually respond to Asobo and MS's resources with a much better sim. They just don't have the manpower and resources that Microsoft can bring, but I DO want them to continue to thrive and do well, and, like you, I will most certainly continue to support them.
This is all very good and much appreciated 👍👍 I'd really like to see the same kind of guides produced for Prepar3D with VR please (esp. the Reverb G2). Performance and visuals in P3D were greatly improved with v5.1 +Hotfix... plus the systems depth and fidelity, and range of aircraft with such, still beats both MSFS and XP11, which is why some of us keep going back to it (whilst still enjoying the other sims of course! 😉 Why not enjoy the best of *all* worlds?!).
Thanks for the Video man. Will get the G2 Tommorow. I have an I7 10750k and RTX 2070 Super 32GB Ram. Will use ur Setting. You just saved me hours haha Subscribed!
Thanks for the tips bud. Just to confirm, by using the OpenXR, does this mean I have to change this each time I use a game from the relevant ecosystem? E.g. say I am playing a Steam game, does this mean I need to change active run time in regedit to the corresponding program (e.g. steam, openxr etc)?
Yes it was steam VR for myself! I have a 1660super and a Rysen 5 3600x with 32gb ram and was wondeing why i was getting 10fps- plus its quite glitchy to add
I think you said you have a 1080ti? I'm buying the reverb in the next couple of weeks and am on the fence regarding what GPU to get. any advice greatly appreciated:)
Great tips, do you have any similar tips for DCS? DCS through Steam VR for G2 is terrible, my Rift S on a much weaker machine was much smoother. I've got some fiddling to do from other videos, but any extra help would be much appreciated!!
I would like to use the G2 has a training tool and project the flying into my desktop screen in real time so I can see what is my student doing , any suggestions how to do it and without killing my RTX 3080?
Hello Steve! So far I can only say bad words about it...With my system specs (5600x/32gb/RTX3070/G2) I'm still struggling to get a stable 30fps for XR motion rep. with low/medium settings at almost half resolution which is ridiculous...Cessna 152 steam gauge is more less OK but some glass cockpit GA and FBW A320neo at KLAX...well I thought I've built a new rig 2 months ago...I think I've made a mistake by 1'st trying Aerofly FS2/VTOL/Alyx in VR which is an incredible experience, perfeclty smooth at full res. Anyway, could you please confirm that everything in far distance is kind of blurry, hazy? Even with clouds set to ULTRA, they're still undefined with some weird, smudgy, motion like artifacts on the edges. Belive me or not, I prefer 2D clouds in Aerofly FS2 over this... I would like to be sure that my G2 is OK. When zooming in (that right mouse button feature doesn't always work as intended) all cockpit instruments are absolutely fine, but from a normal eye distance , they start to be barely readable. Maybe my expectations are to high but I'm now strongly considering switching to X-PLANE...Best wishes, Merry Christmas!:)
MAN I FIGURED IT OUT!!! My God! After so many hours I can finally say it's AMAZING! What I did was switching from OpenXR Dev tools to SteamVR environment (YES!!!) plus studying this post: forums.flightsimulator.com/t/my-2070-super-vr-settings-and-suggestions-valve-index/321913/148 . I did some changes to Nvidia CPL panel too. You have to launch MSFS first (!) with WMR window/SteamVR closed (!). After launching the sim, press CTR+TAB and go into VR mode. Guys I can run this now at FULL RES 2236x2192 (!!!) with ultra clouds, medium settings at 30-45FPS fluid! I have no idea why it didn't worked with OpenXR dev.tools and motion reprojection on! It's a night and day difference now! With OpenXR I couldn't even get stable 30fps! Man it's georgous now both GA and Airliners!
I bet you're wondering why Planes are tiny... THIS IS THE FIX! I just set Game to 100% and G2 WMR Dev Tool at 50% which adds to the same as I was using previously but in smaller scale of 80% Game + 70% WMR Developer Tool which you do need for the G2 to fix best performance also.
Hi there. You mentioned that is better if we don't use Steam VR. I have the reverb G2 and steam vr opens automatically as soon as I hit the Ctrl+Tab key combination. How do I make it run only through windows mix reality ?
Did my first Flight with Reverb G2 on 10750k and 2070Super. Holy Shit.. Never expect it this good! guys what are your Settings in the OpenXR Tool . Costum Render Scale at 80% and leave it in the sim on 100? Motion Reprojection?
Hi, I am so glad you’re making those vids, they are very helpful, so thank you very much. I am running my G2 and everything is fine and I am almost to the perfect experience in VR, but there is one quirk left that I don’t know to fix, so here it is: It is related to the mouse pointer, which follows where ever I look and won’t disappear, it is such an immersion breaker, especially when I look above my left shoulder to admire the scenery or line up myself for final, the mouse pointer is right there stuck on the left cockpit window and pretty big too, or in final for landing and have to move my mouse to get rid of the pointer in front me, but will re-appear instantly in front of me as soon it detects a tiny head movements. What am I doing wrong, is this a know issue, would you know how to fix it. I have been on Discord and no luck so far, “ you are my only hope VR Flight Sim Guy” Thanks for your vids, keep’em coming : )
All right found what my mouse pointer issue is, letting you know in case you see somebody running through the same issue. It is my ButtKicker with the engine rumbling, it always keeps the mouse, which seats on the sim chassis, activated. So that's why it always follows my head movements. As soon as I turn the BK off, the mouse disappear and is only activated when I use it : ( Have to turn down the BK, too bad that was a good fun immersion trick.
Or decouple the surface, which your mouse is sitting on - I love the immersion I get from my BK as well (despite it indicating, how bad my landing approaches still are😅)
I try to use the suggested OpenXR custom custom render scale. It is make the view distorted. Look when you zoom too far. I do not found any possibility to correct. So, ATM I do NOT suggest to use it. It is better to use the FS solution, that is working perfect.
love you man, glad that i found your channel few month ago! i got very nice framerates with the openxr tool, but it makes sense, for an example i use the fs2020 steam version, if i change now the runtime to wmr, can i start the sim without steam? so it will start only with wmr? thanks mate :)
For those who don't see a check box for "Custom Render Scale" replug your G2 and click "Refresh" on the Home screen (first tab) of OpenXR. If no headset is detected you won't get that checkbox. At first I thought a new update had removed it but then I saw my headset was offline. Doh.
If you change the settings in this app but then change the Active Runtime back to SteamVR, doesn't that mean that these settings will be ignored in the end?
Apology for the silly question. You said Steam VR is detrimental to frame rates. Does this mean if I have purchased MSFS on steam I can only launch/play through steam VR or can I bypass and use WMR? Again , sorry for the silly question. Cheers
The problem is that SteamVR automatically starts in default settings. To avaid steamVR from running and using the Windows Mixed reality instead, you have to do the Registry trick he shows in the video.
@@DelBoy1967 The registry trick from this video here does basically replace SteamVR with the mixed reality. Before I did that (I use a reverb G2), windows mixed reality AND steamVR launched with MSFS2020 when I started it. After the registry trick above, only windows mixed stars. SteamVR does not start anymore and my performance in MSFS2020 is smoother.
Hi mate thank you for making this video I haven't been able to get VR to work at all and I suspect this will solve my problem, I have got one question tho I'm using the HTC Vive PRO what would I have to change in the registry for that? Would it just be the same as with the Rift? Thanks pal I feel like I might get to experience this very soon 😃😃😃
@@VRFlightSimGuy yeah it is using steam vr, yeah everytine I try and switch vr on its just saying no headset detected 😪 would i still need openXR? It seems the game just won't recognise that I have a VR headset connected at all.
Thanks for the info. :) VR public release performance much much better than beta. I can bump some graphics option up and still fly smoothly. But the only one annoying is I can see edge of cowling/console behind propeller dancing flash up and down as you can see in your video @8.35-8.36. Still don't know how to get rid of it. :\
Can I use this OpenXR developer tool for DCS? I thought I might use it to replace SteamVR to run DCS - now I have uninstalled SteamVR and now DCS will not launch in VR mode at all. Now reached my very low limit of tech knowledge. Any help would be handily as I have had some annoying stuttering inside DCS with my HP reverb G2 that did not happen with my Rift S - be nice to fix that, hence my question.
I would also add if you fly VFR at night you'll have to turn down settings. (At least I did with the OrbX London and London City Airport mods installed)
Hey mate, thanks for all your helpful videos... using rift S and just wondering if the renderscale option in openxr shows up if it’s not a WMR headset.. as that option does not exist on my openxr? I have updated the portal as well
Many thanks. Don't worry about open XR as it won't do anything. You need Oculus Tray Tool to adjust your scaling. I may do a vid on this soon. Take care.
I think this has just changed my mind about getting MSFS. The reported low framerates for my 1080ti and G2 put me right off, but now I'm gonna give it a try. Does changing this setting in openXR dev tools make any difference for X-plane or DCS?
As I understood the video, it doesn't make a difference as long as you run other games by using steamvr. So those games will use steamvr settings and msfs will use openxr. I am kind of in the same situation and many others as well, I guess. using my g1 for iracing and msfs (currently re-installing xD)
My version of Open XR Developer Tools does not have the Custom Render Scale option. I have version 105.2012.21002.0. Microsoft Store does not provide the option to download a different version.
I saw something funny with DCS, I had lot of micro sounds cut in DCS, meaning that the computer spits her lungs. So I decided to lower the scale to 50% in Steam and grow up the super sampling to 1.5 in DCS. And guess what, the same image quality, with better frame rate. So maybe FS2020 will be better if we bought it on the X-box store, to avoid the need of 2 VR software? Who knows ^^
@@danielgardenier3535 I didn't touch anything else than the scale in Steam. I think that some time steam isn't the best solution to give him all the setup. I was very surprised, and more surprised when I saw that it changed nothing in the G1, I mean regarding the visual. The same, but better.
Excuse me, that's what I meant. So what was your supersampling in DCS and Steam VR before you changed it...Just to compare. Enjoying DCS in VR for 3 years now, but a smoother performance is always welcome ;)
Even more interesting, because afaik 1.5 ie is not equal 150 % in steam vr. So your visuals shouldn't be the same with 50 % in Steam and 1.5 in DCS when having 100 % and 1.0 in DCS before. Gonna try that anyway ;) Thanks!
if you're 70% rendering in openXR then a further 70% in the sim, you're effectively rendering at 50%. why set sim render at all if open xr does it better? just set openXR to 50% and leave sim at 100%
PLEASE NOTE: By enabling the custom scaler in Open XR. You stop the auto control system taking over giving you even LOWER visual clarity. This means you can then TURN UP render scaling in the sim itself. Giving you better performance. Give it a whirl!

This is way ahead of where I thought MSFS would be at this stage of its development and am really looking forward to Steve’s continued updates.

Pps - there is also the Cliffe, (I live in Caythorpe).
I’d like to draw your attention to the fact that SteamVR sets the resolution correctly for the G2. This is has been addressed by HP and they confirm that 100% in SteamVR is the correct setting for the G2. Thanks for the vid.
I checked just now, it sets the resolution at more than double the per eye resolution @ 100% in SteamVR.
@@tuna_6548 It is supposed to, that is how VR resolution works to correct for barrel distortion and pin cushioning!
Thanks for another useful video. I set the custom render scale to 70 in openXR and made sure it's the runtime being used.
I have a few questions though:
Awesome and congrats! You'll LOVE it!
Hey Matt, I'm so glad to hear I've helped. Comments like yours make all.this RUclips stuff worth while.. Take care
Thanks Steve! I really appreciate you taking the time to share this!
Thanks so much for making these videos. I couldn’t get it to run properly at all but your guides have worked a treat!
Keep them coming ☺️👍🏽👍🏽
does openxr need to be running in the background when u play in vr or does it allways run in background on ya pc...so u dont have to boot it up everytime
This is something I would like to know as well. Will do some Google searching and see if I can find an answer somewhere
Yes
Well done Steve and thanks for all the hard work , info and keeping us up to date 👍😀
A note on the registry edit. In Open XR, on the Home tab, there is a button "Set active runtime". When clicked it sets the registry setting mentioned, so no need to do it manually (for the G1/G2 in WMR at least)
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1
Value: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MixedRealityRuntime.json
@@mvierssen Yes, good explanation, thank you!
just flew around the great pyramids, insane stuff. like trying vr for the first time again
Even the other VRsim guy uses the Q2 over his G2 for this game;
ruclips.net/video/RquMTELfZac/видео.html
Still running like garbage on my 3080
Thanks for this mate! Simply question ...do you need to start the opener Dev tools app each time you run msfs?
Pleasure Richard. Nope thankfully, once you've set everything, just forget about it and fly :)
Set my openxr render to 80% and cranked up my in game settings, it's running sweet!!!!
You've got it! Nice one!
Thanks for the video! Before I begin tweaking lots of things, I would like to get a performance baseline of my system as it is today, like FPS and frametimes in MSFS. What is the most reliable way to do that in your opinion?
How exactly do I launch msfs in vr without going through steam vr?
Ctrl + Tab while in game.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing your results.
Can you give me more info on how you set your Quest 2? Do you need to use the Oculus Link app like I'm using right now? I have the Quest 2. :)
Hi folks,
I'm rather new to all the tweaking and fiddeling around with VR stuff, so I'm curious... Does the custom scaler mess with my other VR games as well? Thanks in advance! :)
Edit ->
I'm using the Rift S, by the way.
Hey Steve,
Would you say the setting you are using for the G2 would largely apply to those of us who still have the G1?
Yes. 100%
HP Reverb marketing suits had him at gunpoint for this video
I’d love to know how you play it without steamVR??? I get very poor FPS.
In task manager, the steamclient process is using over 90% of my GPU.
The best answer I've gotten is that there's another way to run it. Good luck. Nobody will tell us.
This is very exciting. This is what we have been looking forward to. Can’t wait for the G2
Merry Christmas Steve 🥳👍🍺🍺
My G2 arrived 2 days ago and exept the FOV (I'm trying to mod it) I'm blown away!!

Also I put almost all game setting to the lowest possible point. I d rather have clear screen and gauges. The game is still gorgeous though.
In the settings, (camera) camera shake, turn it off, perhaps it will be more comfortable.
Worked perfectly! Thanks for the early Christmas gift!
Pleasure and thanks for your sub, it means a lot
Is it msfs or mixed reality that is causing the goggle view on desktop and not a full view like we had with oculus mirror?
Merry Christmas Flight Sim Guy :-)
Thanks for the tips bud. Just to confirm, by using the OpenXR, does this mean I have to change this each time I use a game from the relevant ecosystem? E.g. say I am playing a Steam game, does this mean I need to change active run time in regedit to the corresponding program (e.g. steam, openxr etc)?
Set and forget 👍
@@VRFlightSimGuy Thanks bud, for Quest 2?
Yes it was steam VR for myself! I have a 1660super and a Rysen 5 3600x with 32gb ram and was wondeing why i was getting 10fps- plus its quite glitchy to add
I think you said you have a 1080ti? I'm buying the reverb in the next couple of weeks and am on the fence regarding what GPU to get. any advice greatly appreciated:)
3070/ti or anything above should be ok 👍
Thanks for the info Steve, all the best & stay safe
I dont seem to get the option for slider on my openxr, i have hp reverb g1.
Great tips, do you have any similar tips for DCS? DCS through Steam VR for G2 is terrible, my Rift S on a much weaker machine was much smoother. I've got some fiddling to do from other videos, but any extra help would be much appreciated!!
Thanks, gonna try it , it looks you do not have grainy clouds?
On my setup the clouds look awfully pixelated and grainy.
Same cloud problem pixel problem here, even on volumetric -ultra. Anyone found a solution?
I would like to use the G2 has a training tool and project the flying into my desktop screen in real time so I can see what is my student doing , any suggestions how to do it and without killing my RTX 3080?
It already can do this by the WMR portal mirror
Nice! The motion reprojection capping things at 30fps let’s you crank up the eye candy on a 3090 and stay smooth ish
I read that it should be OFF with OpenXR for MSFS or Steam VR for XP11.... shall we eventually leave on AUTO ? thanks
Do you have any benchmarks results to compare before and after and justify the 50% boost?
Hey Steve. What is OpenXR Developer Tools? Is this something I need to download from somewhere or is it already somewhere in WMR?
You have to download it from Windows Store.
Where did you get that Open XR with the render scale control ? I have the latest version but I’d doesnt have the render scale Slider
I really enjoy your vids do you plan on maybe doing a group fly eventually?? Because itd be awesome to fly with you
Stupid question - does openxr developer tools for WMR have to be installed separately or is it already somewhere in WMR portal? Thanks
Hi, I am so glad you’re making those vids, they are very helpful, so thank you very much.
I am running my G2 and everything is fine and I am almost to the perfect experience in VR, but there is one quirk left that I don’t know to fix, so here it is:
It is related to the mouse pointer, which follows where ever I look and won’t disappear, it is such an immersion breaker, especially when I look above my left shoulder to admire the scenery or line up myself for final, the mouse pointer is right there stuck on the left cockpit window and pretty big too, or in final for landing and have to move my mouse to get rid of the pointer in front me, but will re-appear instantly in front of me as soon it detects a tiny head movements.
What am I doing wrong, is this a know issue, would you know how to fix it.
I have been on Discord and no luck so far, “ you are my only hope VR Flight Sim Guy”
Thanks for your vids, keep’em coming : )
Click on the wheel roller on your mouse and it will disappear.
May be a stupid question, but how do you operate your flight yoke and throttle quadrant and keyboard when using a VR head set ?
Muscle memory and peeping out the bottom of the headset on occasion for me 🤣
love you man, glad that i found your channel few month ago! i got very nice framerates with the openxr tool, but it makes sense, for an example i use the fs2020 steam version, if i change now the runtime to wmr, can i start the sim without steam? so it will start only with wmr? thanks mate :)
Merry Christmas Steve!
I need help. In VR with the g2 when I turn my head it's like changing a slide in a slide show. What setting will help this?
So with Oculus, do you still use the OpenXR settings? I thought it was for WMR only?
Yes he does
Apology for the silly question.
You said Steam VR is detrimental to frame rates.
Does this mean if I have purchased MSFS on steam I can only launch/play through steam VR or can I bypass and use WMR?
Again , sorry for the silly question.
Cheers
You can use the steam version of mfs2020 in VR without steamVR. Don’t start steamVR
The problem is that SteamVR automatically starts in default settings. To avaid steamVR from running and using the Windows Mixed reality instead, you have to do the Registry trick he shows in the video.
@@aaronin93309 Thanks , much appreciated.
@@TheOli4D Thanks, so this is the Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR?
@@DelBoy1967 The registry trick from this video here does basically replace SteamVR with the mixed reality. SteamVR does not start anymore and my performance in MSFS2020 is smoother.
Thanks switched on preview mod and now its smooth
How do I open the openXR dev tools page? I am on a G2 and OpenXr is installed?
About the reg hack shown in this clip, this won't affect X-Plane and other SteamVR titles, will it?
Will the Reverb G2 run with AMD Ryzen 7 3700x, B550, 32 GB and the RADEON rx5700xt nitro+ with mid resolution?

Hi mate thank you for making this video I haven't been able to get VR to work at all and I suspect this will solve my problem, I have got one question tho I'm using the HTC Vive PRO what would I have to change in the registry for that? Would it just be the same as with the Rift? Thanks pal I feel like I might get to experience this very soon 😃😃😃
Cheers Graham, I presume the Vive is using Steam VR? I've never owned one so I can't be 100% sure on that.
@@VRFlightSimGuy yeah it is using steam vr, yeah everytine I try and switch vr on its just saying no headset detected 😪 would i still need openXR? It seems the game just won't recognise that I have a VR headset connected at all.
Thanks for the info. :)
VR public release performance much much better than beta.
I can bump some graphics option up and still fly smoothly.
But the only one annoying is I can see edge of cowling/console behind propeller dancing flash up and down as you can see in your video @8.35-8.36. Still don't know how to get rid of it. :\
Why the need for OpenXR. MSFS Dev said it wasnt needed for G2.
It isn't needed, but it's helpful if you want a smoother experience.
What about the 2nd OpenXr - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\0 .....do you edit that one as well?
Hey mate, thanks for all your helpful videos... using rift S and just wondering if the renderscale option in openxr shows up if it’s not a WMR headset.. as that option does not exist on my openxr? I have updated the portal as well
Many thanks. Don't worry about open XR as it won't do anything. You need Oculus Tray Tool to adjust your scaling. I may do a vid on this soon. Take care.
Hi Steve thank for that, my reverb g2 arrived today and I’m still not showing the custom render option in openXr any ideas?
@@la-codeband It may need updating in the MS store (it doesn't auto update as far as I'm aware)
@@fliegertyp8376 Wasn't sure because WMR is still used for steamVR.
Would this work for other games, ie iRacing?
I’d like to know this too, will try it later.
My version of Open XR Developer Tools does not have the Custom Render Scale option. I have version 105.2012.21002.0. Microsoft Store does not provide the option to download a different version.
some of us uses the valve index headset. we have to use steam vr to fly MSFS2020
Does this plugin work for DCS also maybe?
I saw something funny with DCS, I had lot of micro sounds cut in DCS, meaning that the computer spits her lungs.
So I decided to lower the scale to 50% in Steam and grow up the super sampling to 1.5 in DCS.
And guess what, the same image quality, with better frame rate.
So maybe FS2020 will be better if we bought it on the X-box store, to avoid the need of 2 VR software?
Who knows ^^
Nice finding ;) Could you please share ylur settings you used in DCS and Steam before that?
@@danielgardenier3535 I didn't touch anything else than the scale in Steam. I think that some time steam isn't the best solution to give him all the setup. I was very surprised, and more surprised when I saw that it changed nothing in the G1, I mean regarding the visual.
The same, but better.
Excuse me, that's what I meant. So what was your supersampling in DCS and Steam VR before you changed it...Just to compare. Enjoying DCS in VR for 3 years now, but a smoother performance is always welcome ;)
@@danielgardenier3535 before I was 100% on steam and 1.00 in DCS super sampling.
Even more interesting, because afaik 1.5 ie is not equal 150 % in steam vr. So your visuals shouldn't be the same with 50 % in Steam and 1.5 in DCS when having 100 % and 1.0 in DCS before. Gonna try that anyway ;) Thanks!
How is this any different than reducing your render scale further ingame?
if you're 70% rendering in openXR then a further 70% in the sim, you're effectively rendering at 50%. why set sim render at all if open xr does it better? just set openXR to 50% and leave sim at 100%
Even if you leave it at 100%, this means ASW preview won't auto change this slider, so set this depending on your system. Good luck!
Hi Dude can you help I have the original HP reverb, when I click on MSFS2020 VR
