The last song is referencing to the KKK which in the south would go around lynching African Americans during the Jim Crow period (after the Civil War's 'restoration period' but before Civil Rights movements of the 1960s, where the laws of the south were heavily focused on discriminating against African Americans). 'Getting the boys together' is referencing getting all the prominent white men of a southern town (who usually were part of the KKK) together at night to go out and terrorize the black population, this usually happened on horseback with torches. The KKK would wear hoods to conceal themselves because most of the white men were afraid their positions in society would be affected if everyone openly knew who they were. They'd often find an African American, usually male, and hang them from a tree or post as a warning to the rest of the African American population to know 'their place' and to fear the KKK/white people, that's the 'having a hangin' part. This wasn't the only acts of terror that the KKK would commit unto African American populations in the South though, cross-burnings, arson, bombings, and all sorts of heinous crimes and violence were committed by white supremacists in the South, and whilst it was technically against the law, the local law enforcement rarely prosecuted or investigated those responsible. The last song is referencing to the KKK which in the south would go around lynching African Americans during the Jim Crow period (after the Civil War's 'restoration period' but before Civil Rights movements of the 1960s, where the laws of the south were heavily focused on discriminating against African Americans).
'Getting the boys together' is referencing getting all the prominent white men of a southern town (who usually were part of the KKK) together at night to go out and terrorize the black population, this usually happened on horseback with torches. The KKK would wear hoods to conceal themselves because most of the white men were afraid their positions in society would be affected if everyone openly knew who they were. They'd often find an African American, usually male, and hang them from a tree or post as a warning to the rest of the African American population to know 'their place' and to fear the KKK/white people, that's the 'having a hangin' part. This wasn't the only acts of terror that the KKK would commit unto African American populations in the South though, cross-burnings, arson, bombings, and all sorts of heinous crimes and violence were committed by white supremacists in the South, and whilst it was technically against the law, the local law enforcement rarely prosecuted or investigated those responsible. In some cases, law enforcement themselves were part of those white men off work riding off at night with ropes and torches to terrorize African Americans.
Back in the 60s and earlier in America, it was common in the South for racists to gather up and kidnap black people and lynch them (aka hanging) from trees.
