I really liked Doctor Sleep, not as much as the group I saw it with, but it's definitely Mike Flanagan and better than 80% of most generic horror movies. It's no Shining, but it's enjoyable. Most audience members seem to like this movie, so if you were wanting to see it but this made you unsure, I'd say to give it a go.
To add onto Ralph’s statement that disagreeing with someone is healthy, I disagree with Adum’s opinion so often, yet I still regard him as one of my favorite film critics and one of the best critics on this platform.

I just want to say that in regards to Doctor Sleep i'm glad its more Stephen King than Stankey Kubrick just because I don't think it could even hope to match up. I think the only reason that movie worked as well as it did was because they recognized their limitations and went in a different direction. And I do think Doctor Sleep is a little bit underrated. Its not perfect and its absolutely not on the same level as The Shining but I feel its positives outweigh its negatives.
Sardonicast's review seemed like they overlooked major parts of the movie. Their main point was horror movie not scary equals bad movie. To be fair though horror is subjective, what I find scary may not scare you. However in their review they overlooked scary themes such as The True Knot stalking and kidnapping children only to viciously torture them to exactract The Shine. Other things missed are the fear of death, alcohol abuse, and the effects of having an abusive parent especially becoming that abusive parent when you're older. (which was the main point of the final act) Ok sure perhaps the movie isn't your conventional Hollywood scary with jumpscares, but they neglected to mention the great character work, plot, visuals and acting. The movie is a continuation of Daniel Torrance's character, exploring the results of having an abusive and estranged father. In the movie there's this powerful scene with Daniel explaining how he didn't truly know his father and after Jack had died the moment in Daniel's life where he understood his father was when he himself was an alcoholic. In this scene alone you can see all the pain that his father did to him when he was a child as well as all the pain he felt as an adult, and it creates this Sins of the father paralel with the two characters. Where one chose evil for his own selfish desires and the other wishes to not become the evil that raised him. This is further explored in the third act of the movie at the Overlook Hotel where Dan confronts his father in order to gain some kind of acceptance. In that scene Jack or in this case Loyd (staying true to the Kubrick film) neglects him and chooses to bribe his son with the same thing that took him away all those years ago. However Daniel stays strong and further tries to reach out to his father, but this is responded with cold hearted remarks as is the real life case, some people will never change. Mind you these scenes are done with phenomenal acting and directing and I was left confused why those guys didn't mention this. Am I looking too far into things? (Probably, but I only saw the movie twice.) This ain't even the only example of good character work in the movie, Rose The Hat in my opinion was one of the best antagonists in recent years. She has a clear motive, she wants her and her friends to survive. The only way to do that is to feast off of The Shine from others. The real scary part to her character is all the boundaries she's willing to cross, not even batting an eye at murdering children. If that's not enough for you well the actress Rebecca Ferguson has a family dynamic with the other members of The True Knot, she also brings charisma to her performance to try to entice people with her offer of immortality almost coming off resembling an interpretation of Satan. To me I was shocked when the reviewers said she was annoying in the movie, because I know that most audiences loved her performance. The character of Abra was almost completely absent from the review. When the actress playing her did a wonderful job. (Which is saying a lot because most child actors tend to be bad.) Abra represents the visual representation of Daniel's childhood if it wasn't fucked up and serves as his reason to stay good. Abra is also resourcesful and witty which plays really well in contrast with Daniel's mello tone. Abra also is very powerful and is a better reflection to Rose, which is also why Rose tempts her into joining The True Knot. If I recall correctly the reviewers said another one of their complaints was that the movie was cheesy and the effects were bad. They mentioned the scene where The True Knot (The Vampires) are sucking the soul out of the boy was funny. Um what? Did they not hear the boy's screams of Mercy or see the dagger being stabbed, mind you there is barely any blood shown in this scene as that is TRUE horror. The fear of not knowing what lies in darkness. To me it seemed like these guys were hoping to see jumpscares. (Not staying jumpscares are bad in horror movies as they can be good if implemented well.) They also said the effects were bad. All the effects were done digital or practically. The scenes with The Shine visually shown as vapor and scenes with the vampire's "Beast Mode"(For lack of a better term) were done digitally. However scenes with the Rotting Lady, Rose's injured hand, Danny's apartment being turned, and the Overlook Hotel are all done practically, also the cgi ain't even that bad. It seemed like they were nitpicking. My final argument to their complaints, The Overlook Hotel. The reviewers said that the scenes with The Overlook Hotel were done for nostalgia and were pointless. However they failed to realize that the Hotel itself is the weapon Danny will use to defeat Rose, but they also don't know or perhaps don't care about The Overlook Hotel being a visual metaphor for Danny's past. The Cycle, becoming his father and this shown through the repeat of the "Give me the bat scene", "The Conversation at the Bar scene" as well as the redo of the "Bathroom scene with Loyd" which is the Hotel telling Danny to "Just Let Things Happen." all of this leads up to Dan at the brink of killing Abra in room 237 which is where Jack gave into the Hotel's temptations in the first film. I really felt like these guys were on their phones, fell asleep, or were in the bathroom during the movie. (I think one of them was in the bathroom though😂) I will say though they did bring some genuinely good criticisms. The kind of "horror" in Doctor Sleep isn't for everyone. I definitely agree with this point, because the story is more focused on it's character's rather than just saying boo really loud. The scary parts are actually real things like: alcoholism, fear of death, the need for acceptance, depression and overcoming your past. The rest of The True Knot crew isn't fully fleshed out. They're more side characters with very little snippets of who they are. The Crow and the Viper Lady (I forgot her name ) do get some attention in the story, but it's not enough. To me it's clear that most of the writer's attention went to Rose The Hat. I also understood what they ment with this movie being more "Stephen King" than The Shinning was. All in all I thought the movie was highly underrated and I hope more people come around to it in the future. After all, The Shinning was very devicive when it first realeased in 1980. P.s don't take this comment as an attack. I'm just a really big fan of movies and I feel this one is underrated. That's all :)
I come from Quebec, Canada and I see bagged milk a lot it’s a thing here that many people use mostly people who drink a lot of it. Like the milk lobby is really powerful here cause of our production so we just have like milk lobby adverts all the time and are advised all the time to drink it even tho it’s proven not to be the best thing.
I finally read the book, watched the movie and now I'm here. The book is truly one of those unadaptable books. It truly functions as a piece of pure literature. That said, I loved the movie and thought that the quasi biopic "making of" approach was right for this movie. Also, they mentioned Cloud Atlas, which, weirdly enough, I'm about to read before watching the movie. Get out of my head, Sardonicast.

Public service announcement: nearly all of the boys’ Doctor Sleep complaints are not present in Stephen King’s novel (the random shoot out, lack of development for the villains, incessant Shining rehashes in the last half hour, etc) so King shouldn’t be blamed for them.
I think you missed the mark on Doctor Sleep. It is a sequel book to the shining, Flanagan made it both the adaptation and sequel to the Shining movie. So yeah, you need to have at least seen The Shining to get Doctor Sleep. Moreover, I think Flanagan pulled off the impossible here.
Bagged Milk is quite common in Brazil too, I'm not a specialist or anything, but apparently, since they have a smaller duration period and go sour easier (if not in the refrigerator) they put fewer chemicals in it, making it ''healthier'' than the other one.
everybody who liked Naked Lunch should definitely read Burroughs's books! his stuff's fuckin wild and a ton of fun then again I also thought Dr. Sleep wasn't that bad so that may discredit my opinion
Naked Lunch is great I think my top Cronenberg films go something like this (though the top 3 are pretty interchangable) : 1. VideoDrome 2. Naked Lunch 3. Dead Ringers 4. The Fly 5. A Dangerous Method 6. Eastern Promises 7. The Brood and way below the others 8. The Dead Zone
A LOT of people take magic and the occult seriously.. Particularly ones you guys discuss.. Eggers, Kubrick, Aster, PTA, Jodorowsky, Noe, etc. it’s so obvious and the fact you don’t see it worries me.
Adum, you silly goose! They establish that Woody is from the 50's or something, the same period as the villain doll, so the voice box things would be compatible. I'm not usually one to point out nitpicks, but this "plot hole" was specifically addressed in the film itself, so the complaint doesn't really stand.
1:11:50 ok so I'm rewatching this about a year and a half later. I remember this question, but I forgot I was the one who asked it. This was surprising.
I cant justify it but there is (or was) bagged milk in Ontario years ago. I'm not sure if it's still available but it was when I was growing up. They use to have bagged milk in Nova Scotia but they stopped selling it because Nova Scotia is incredibly "green". Since moving to BC I haven't seen bagged milk.
Why is the third movie in a trilogy always the weakest? The Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, the Godfather trilogy apparently, the Dark Knight trilogy, the original Star Wars trilogy (though imo Return of the Jedi is still great)
@@davejohnson4855 Agreed. Haven't seen the Godfather trilogy (I need to though) or the complete Raimi trilogy, but I've seen the other two. Imo The Dark Knight Rises is just meh. I see why some loved it, but idk it's just boring to me
I grew up in Ontario. Here is the secret of milk bags (at least what I was told)... you can transport more milk in bulk. Think about it, if you fill a box with ketchup packets its almost the same volume as literally filling the box with ketchup. The packets squish together so there is very little lost volume. If you filled the same sized box with stacks of tiny ketchup bottles, you lose about half the volume. Milk science ;)
In many places in latin América they sell bagged milk too (sachet is fancier) . Im from Uruguay, and that's the way we buy it here too, carton is usually way more expensive. Plus, milk sachet are fully recycleable, while tetrapacks have cardboard and plastic layers fused, so they are useless after first use. Cheers.
I remember bagged milk in B.C. up until about 10 years ago. You might still be able to find at co-ops. It was designed in the era when people were just becoming conscious about generating garbage, but there was no recycling. So you put the bag in a reusable plastic jug. Plastic bags were light-weight for transportation (and therefore used less fuel). Plastic as a toxic pollutant was not as much of a thing then.

I always find it weird how people from the US/Canada talk about certain cinema's selling booze as if it's special, when the cinema I went to as a kid from around 11 years old until I went to university not only sold Booze at all hours of the day but once they put in advertising screens behind the concession stand they'd have an ad for buying wine playing at like 4pm. This wasn't a mom and pop cinema either, it was a Cineworld cinema which is a big chain.

Oh wow. Wasn’t there a thing that dunkey said where he didn’t think he’d do or be on a podcast because he wouldn’t have much to say? Regardless I’m super happy to hear he’s joining my bois for an episode
Pretty sure he was on the H3H3 podcast.
He was also on the Official Podcast, and had his own podcast called Dunk Dank for 10 full episodes.
As soon as I heard “ayyyyyyy” I knew it was the Rebel Taxi intro. Pan would be a great guest

Hey, it's the most underrated podcast in all of the internet!
When I saw 'Soul' with the time code I thought they were going to talk about if they have soul or not
There definitely was bagged milk in Vancouver once upon a time. I remember putting them in a plastic jug and then cutting the corner to pour.
A bit late to the party but re: milk bag
It used to be the De Facto way to buy milk in Quebec. When I was younger it was the only way to buy milk where I lived. But as time progressed, it is slowly being phased out.
I'd say milk bag still represent roughly 1/4 of the total milk sold in Quebec to this day.
Naked Lunch was the first movie they talked about that I had to stop and go watch. It was a wild trip, highly recommend it.
In Ontario, I have bagged milk all the time, I don’t really know why though. I guess you just get more milk for cheaper prices or something
Technically South Koreans pronounce 'Seoul' more close to 'Suh-ul' rather than 'Soul'
woah dunkey hell yeah :D its so bizarre when two internet things you know collide unexpectedly
Hey guys, just here to tell you that Naked Lunch is a fantastic book and everyone here should definitely read it!
Dead Poets Society was an excellent shift of tone. As was Goodfellas with the death of the bartender in my opinion.
(which was the main point of the final act)
Ok sure perhaps the movie isn't your conventional Hollywood scary with jumpscares, but they neglected to mention the great character work, plot, visuals and acting.
(Probably, but I only saw the movie twice.)
This ain't even the only example of good character work in the movie, Rose The Hat in my opinion was one of the best antagonists in recent years.
(Not staying jumpscares are bad in horror movies as they can be good if implemented well.)
They also said the effects were bad.
(I think one of them was in the bathroom though😂)
I will say though they did bring some genuinely good criticisms.
Adam was right...he would not see Soul in theaters
Adum needs to watch "Beastars". He'll have a Legosi plushie (with plush bloody fangs) by the end of episode 4.
Does this mean that Pan Pizza could be a potential guest on the show?
Just a thought, Anyways...

Public service announcement: nearly all of the boys’ Doctor Sleep complaints are not present in Stephen King’s novel (the random shoot out, lack of development for the villains, incessant Shining rehashes in the last half hour, etc) so King shouldn’t be blamed for them.
The World’s End had a pretty good shift
That first fan art in this episode is the best one change my mind
I live in the east of Canada and I've hardly ever seen bagged milk. My grandparents used to buy it and I've always found it weird and archaic.
I think you missed the mark on Doctor Sleep. It is a sequel book to the shining, Flanagan made it both the adaptation and sequel to the Shining movie. So yeah, you need to have at least seen The Shining to get Doctor Sleep. Moreover, I think Flanagan pulled off the impossible here.
you have to have read the novels too
Dunkey + Sardonicast is going to be the most hype crossover special in history
Bagged Milk is quite common in Brazil too, I'm not a specialist or anything, but apparently, since they have a smaller duration period and go
sour easier (if not in the refrigerator) they put fewer chemicals in it, making it ''healthier'' than the other one.
everybody who liked Naked Lunch should definitely read Burroughs's books! his stuff's fuckin wild and a ton of fun
then again I also thought Dr. Sleep wasn't that bad so that may discredit my opinion
Please watch Buffalo ‘66 as a fan recommendation ):
We've asked so many times ;c
YES YES YES I've been wanting them to review it for a long time. I think they would like it and it's on Adam's watchlist
Pyrohork Empire yessss. I’m sure they would all like it. Hopefully love it. It’s a hidden gem
I feel like the boys would have a good conversation about Barton Fink
Naked Lunch is great
I think my top Cronenberg films go something like this (though the top 3 are pretty interchangable) :
1. VideoDrome
2. Naked Lunch
3. Dead Ringers
4. The Fly
5. A Dangerous Method
6. Eastern Promises
7. The Brood
and way below the others 8. The Dead Zone
1:29:05 Have none of them seen Dogville? That had really effective changes in atmosphere.
Nah they havent. Its on all their watchlists
My favorite Cronenberg will always be "Dead Ringers". You should talk about it! It's a MASTERPIECE.
How?
A LOT of people take magic and the occult seriously.. Particularly ones you guys discuss.. Eggers, Kubrick, Aster, PTA, Jodorowsky, Noe, etc. it’s so obvious and the fact you don’t see it worries me.
Jesus fuck they gon’ be getting dunkey on next!?
My brain blew a gasket upon that Dunkboy news.
Bagged milk is present here in Brazil too, at least in São Paulo state, altough we see it being used more in dairy stuff such as yorgut
Adum, you silly goose! They establish that Woody is from the 50's or something, the same period as the villain doll, so the voice box things would be compatible. I'm not usually one to point out nitpicks, but this "plot hole" was specifically addressed in the film itself, so the complaint doesn't really stand.
You guys should talk about Men Who Stare at Goats on an episode.
Opinion on the awful trailer "remake/reboot" for "The Grudge"?
Are we not gonna address that Toy Story 4 was one of the main sections of this video, description?
Still waiting on that Godfather Part 2 recommendation
Just do the full trilogy. We get the best of both worlds, adoring the first two and making fun of the third.
Why is the third movie in a trilogy always the weakest? The Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, the Godfather trilogy apparently, the Dark Knight trilogy, the original Star Wars trilogy (though imo Return of the Jedi is still great)
@@WiloPolis03 Yeah Return of the Jedi is the best three-quel on that list.
@@davejohnson4855 Agreed. Haven't seen the Godfather trilogy (I need to though) or the complete Raimi trilogy, but I've seen the other two.
Imo The Dark Knight Rises is just meh. I see why some loved it, but idk it's just boring to me
@@WiloPolis03 i love dark knight rises, imo way better than batman begins. Bane really resonated with me in a way that somebody like thanos did.
Thank you for linking to the old Reddit, it's the little things that matter lmao
Cheers.
Strange that they couldn't remember From Dusk till Dawn for the last question.
That movie sucks anyways
The best way to wake up.
I had a hard time reading it first time but I'm currently rereading it and it makes alot more sense now but still fucking weird and confusing
No love for Videodrome or Scanners.... Or the Brood, or Shivers, fuck man Cronenberg had quite the run
I've seen bagged milk at stores in Mexico and Russia, so for me they've always been common.
Mike Flanagan directed Oculus which was awesome. Hush & Gerald's game were alright.
Doctor Sleep is a million times better than IT Chapter 2.
