    4:14 - Artemis Fowl
    20:00 - Incendies
    1:05:31 - Q&A
    1:05:48 - What is a classic movie that you genuinely hate?
    1:11:05 - In the February 25, 2019 episode about Disney and Madagascar, Adam complains about Disney censoring their old, offensive content, and expresses his wish that they would make the original, uncut content available with a disclaimer ahead of it. Cut to one year later and Disney is doing exactly that on Disney Plus with much of their old content. And they are widely being crucified for it. I am curious to know what Adam's (and Alex and Ralph's) thoughts are on this development. Do you think that this may be a no-win situation for Disney?
    1:15:18 - What are your thoughts on the Five Nights At Freddys franchise and the upcoming movie?
    1:21:16 - In Hollywood high school films, there are all this types of characters, the jock, the hot blonde, etc. The teenagers also act very PG, is high school genuinely like this or is it another terrible attempt by a multibillionare company trying to relate to a teenager audience?
    1:24:07 - If there were a movie about the life of Derek Savage in the vein of Tim Burton's Ed Wood, who would you cast as Daddy Derek?
    Film recommendation: Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)

    The FNaF movie is being directed by Chris Columbus (incidentally, director of Night at the Museum) and co-written by Scott Cawthon and Jason Blum.
    Scott himself went through multiple scripts that Jason himself approved, but he kept having to throw out scripts because he had better ideas and felt he hadn't put enough effort into it. I think it'll at least be decent.
    Also these games are actually being picked up by professional high-budget developers, they're actually taking one or two years to make now.

    • @Alberich_Prince_of_Dwarves
      @Alberich_Prince_of_Dwarves 4 года назад +3

      I am somewhat more interested in the FNaF film knowing that Scott Cawthon himself is working on it.
      Despite how basic and very shallow the plot was in the first game, plus the very simple gameplay, I still think Scott Cawthon caught lightning in a bottle with his franchise. I can respect the hustle.

    • @frankmerker630
      @frankmerker630 4 года назад

      I dunno, I see the name Jason Blum attached and I can easily see it strive for a low-hanging fruit appeal

      I mean, Blumhouse films are either entertainingly bad or it's a completely different beast, like fucking Whiplash. Like, if you didn't know anything about it and you just saw the production company, would you bother with Whiplash?
      Of course a man like Jason Blum is going to be a shark in the water. Just yet another producer who wants money.

    • @ajzeg01

      A troubled development usually means a troubled final product.

    • @WiloPolis03
      @WiloPolis03 4 года назад +1

      @@ajzeg01 Not necessarily. If it was a case of directors or any type of crew leaving and everyone else having to piece the movie back together (ex. Justice League with the hire of Joss Whedon, or Wonder Park, which literally had no replacement for a director), then yeah, usually. Or if it was a case of studio meddling or dissagreements with higher-ups or executive producers, that would also be the case most likely.
      This is a bit different. Scott Cawthon himself (in an interview with Dawko a couple years ago) described his work ethic for the movie while reflecting on some of his earlier games, saying:
      *"If I was treating the movie as I was treating my game series at the time I made FNaF World, we would be three movies into the FNaF movies, and they would probably be terrible, y'know? If I had the mindset that 'Oh hey, it's Five Nights at Freddy's! People will love it!', y'know, regardless of quality, then we would already have several movies, and they would all be terrible."*
      So it sounds like it's more a case of Scott redoing and redoing it all over until he finally gets it right, rather than studio interference or messy re-hirings. Some of my favorite seasons of Doctor Who have taken over 18 months to write and produce. I see this as a good thing, personally.

    While the jumpscare gimmick is stupid in the games, I will say that the original Five Night's at Freddy's game had a pretty decent atmosphere at first. The first few minutes of clicking around the building with good headphones in a dark room was pretty creepy to me honestly. I thought the ambient parts were done quite well, but after the first night it wore off. I stopped hearing about the lore for a while, and every once in a while I'll hear more of the story and I bust out laughing. It's like the Ben-Hur of children's horror and I kinda love it for how terrible it is.

    • @WiloPolis03
      @WiloPolis03 4 года назад +5

      I agree that the lore is absolutely a mess right now (Scott Cawthon himself has been applauding memes of it), but I definitely think the games have evolved to be much more than just jumpscares. First few games are basically just jumpscares, but thinks get legitimately creepy around SL and onwards

    While watching Incendies I had to take a smoke break to process what I had just seen after the bus scene, not exactly because of the violence portrayed, but merely because of the shot with the rifles decorated with pictures of saint Mary. My mother is a vehement catholic and she had this sort of altar in a shelf, right above the TV set where I watched the movie, with a lot of figurines and similar pictures of saint Mary, in a way that made the moment rather stark in the iconographic proximity. Of course mom never had any type of affiliation to any sort of guerrilla group, but right then I felt the movie seeped just a little bit into my home.

  • @Wtfsmyusername

    The way Gael had a close connection with Incendies is how I was with Florida Project. Not that I grew up exactly like the protagonist in that movie, but the accurate setting and display of poverty actually gave me Nostalgia of childhood summers in a weird way. Was pretty cool to see a movie that accurately displays the unseen side of where you grew up be so critically acclaimed.

    I used to work with a group of Lebanese refugees here in Texas. Strangely enough they were all metal heads, and since I’m like 20 years younger then all of them, I showed them a bunch of new metal from my generation. Lamb Of God was by far their favorite of all the stuff I showed them. They were more in to Sepultura, Slayer, and Napalm Death kinda older metal stuff.
    It was a strange kind of cultural exchange. They were all super devout Muslims (relative to American Christians that is), they did the thing where they wash their arms and neck before they pray and would all go in to the office to pray together.
    One of them was from Sudan, the older guy working there, and me and him (his name is Mortada) became pretty good friends. His wife would make me food every day for work and Mortada would bring it in and we would sit and eat his weird ass spinach goo and lamb and rice.
    Mortada was like 55 when we met and he lived in Sudan until his 30s, I think there was a war when he was a young adult is he left the country. And I’ll tell you what, Mortada carrier some strange ass customs and ideas from Sudan. Firstly, he didn’t know what a condom was, so I had to essentially give this old man _the talk_ about how in America people have sex with rubber on their cocks. Mortada was perplexed, he thought of the purpose of sex as ejacing in a lady’s hole so he thought it was very strange to purposefully NOT do that. I had 2 gay roommates at the time, and Mortada said in his country a gay person would in essence be imprisoned by their family, not allowed to leave the house for fear of being arrested for being gay.
    Mortada was also kind of... sorta.... a pedophile. In his country and culture, a girl was suitable for marriage/sex when she had her first period, which could be like age 9 for some girls. So I had to let him know that if he expressed this idea, that it’s cool to fuck children, that people would beat the piss out of him and throw him in jail. Back when I worked with Mortada I was taking a lot of Vicodin, and my dealer would meet me up at work and sell me shit. So Mortada asked me what I was doing and I told him I bought some pills, he asked what kind and I explained what an opiate is, how it comes from the poppy plant. And this was some kind of revelation to Mortada, we worked at a high end health food store and so I got a bottle of poppy seeds to show him the flowers and this BLEW HIS MIND. He said that where he lived in Sudan, those flowers were LITERALLY EVERYWHERE. He said it was like grass in his town. In every yard. And I told him that if you cut the plant it drains sap that you can eat or smoke or drink if you have pain and it helps. And Mortada told me that “the elders told him the plant was poisonous” so no one ever messed with them.
    Mortada also wiped his asshole with his hand, which I figured out over months because he always took a cup of water to the bathroom to wash his bung.
    And probably the craziest shit he told me we thay when he was a teen; his family had guests over, a few older men from out of town, so when there are guests over the otherwise gender segregated home would all sleep in the women’s part of the house and he said that in Sudan, all homes have very tall kinda Adobe walls around them instead of fences. So one night, while everyone but his dad were asleep in the women’s side of the house a group of I think 3 men through a ladder over his perimeter walls and broke in to the house. These men broke in to the men’s side of the home, found his dad asleep, and shot him to death. The men then fled on foot; everyone ran outside to see what happened and they saw the backs of the men as they jumped back over the wall. The Sudanese equivalent of the police came out with a dog to smell search for the men, and this dog led the cops to 3 men sitting outside of a store playing checkers.
    Mortada tells me this story and I say “okay so how longer are the men in jail, or do they get the death penalty?” And Mortada told me that according to islamic/Sudanese law, “if you didn’t see a mans face when he committed a crime then you cannot accuse a man of that crime, as you could be accidentally punishing an innocent person.” Or some dogshit like that. And so, Mortadas dad got murdered and they pretty much know who did it, but because they didn’t see the men’a faces when they did the crime; they walk free.
    Some wild shit going on over in that part of the world. Reminds me how lucky I am to not have to deal with that kind of barbarism on a daily basis. Shit if anything, westerners make up problems to be offended by, and make mountains out of mole hills. And once in a while you’ll meet a person who faced *real problems in their life* and our first world dumb shit becomes instantly apparent in its absurdity and excess.

    Also, fun fact: This movie was nominated for the foreign language film Oscar in the same year as Dogtooth and Biutiful, but they all lost to In A Better World. So in a year where Villeneuve, Lanthimos and Iñarrítu were all nominated for the same Oscar, they all lost to the director of Bird Box...
