Yuko has one of the best trained voices I've ever heard, it goes exactly where she wants it to every time with no strain and full support, and as you mentioned, her breath control is phenomenal. But it never sounds like just technique, there's a warmth and a passion there too, as well as joy. Have a good delve into their other stuff, Beth. You'll be glad you did.
Interesting fact to know: Even in Japan, these musicians are all considered absolute masterclass. They all give lessons at universities in their instrument, or in Yukos case, in the traditional way of japanese singing :)
Wow. Have been hoping for a Wagakki reaction for quite a while. This is one of their older songs, but still fun. Having travelled from Melbourne to Tokyo in 2018 to see the Wagakki Band live, I can tell you (because we bought one) that the things they are waving round their heads are long, narrow towels called "muffler towels" because in the past people used to wrap them round their necks to absorb sweat on hot days. These of course have the band's logo on them. Waving them round your head at concerts is the equivalent of waving your scarf round your head at a football match (in Australia anyway). Of course, being Japan, we were very politely asked to make sure we didn't whack other people in the head while using them. We also bought a battery powered band logo glowstick (known as a "penlight" in Japanese) to give us something else to wave. Yuko studied piano and classical "shigin" singing at a music university in Tokyo. She has spoken in interviews of having to learn how to be a rock singer, including a hilarious story about ending up with mild whiplash after the bass player tried to teach her how to headbang. The wind instrument is not a recorder but a bamboo flute called a shakuhachi. The other Japanese instruments are the 3 string shamisen, the taiko drums, and the koto, a flat harp played with finger mounted picks called "tsume." The koto traditionally has 13 or 17 strings, but the Wagakki Band's player uses 21 and 25 string instruments to make pitch matching easier. Yuko also excels as a singer of dramatic ballads. It's worth checking out the live videos of "Atena no nai tegami" or "Sabaku no komoriuta." Also the live duet with Amy Lee on "Bring me to life."
Hi Brian! You are very well informed about Wagakki Band. Excellent! But one thing is wrong. Yuko has learned Shigin singing not at university, but at Shigin school in her native town, Mito city already since 5 years old, including fan and sword dances. Thanks a lot for your many informations. I love 'Sabaku no Komoriuta/Lullaby in the Desert' and 'Bring me to life' by Amy Lee and Wagakki Band with full orchestra, too. @@fumin8 Thanks. As a Japanese speaker I have followed many of her interviews in Japanese, and as you correctly pointed out she started to learn Shigin in Mito from elementary school onwards, but she also said that her university studies combined piano with further studies of Shigin. The towel game is quite usual to Japanese concerts. That's a way for the singer and audiences to interact or build a connection. Btw, I assume that Yuko (the vocalist) could breathe smoothly due to her skills of poem chanting ("Shigin" in Japanese).

Very similar to a tenugui, but actually a piece of band merchandise that they call a "muffler towel, " and sold specifically to be waved at concerts. We bought one when we saw them in Tokyo in 2018.
@@davidornberg The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on the subject of towels. A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Krakafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Trall (a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you-daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough. More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: nonhitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have “lost.” What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with. Hence a phrase that has passed into hitchhiking slang, as in “Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There’s a frood who really knows where his towel is.” (Sass: know of, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy).
Waggaki Band is excellent! Very cool that you got to them. I love those traditional Japanese (and other East Asian) instruments, and Japanese is one of favourite languages to hear in song. About the title "Hana Furumai" "Hana" is a flower. The interpretation of "Furumai" is subtle. Japanese has an ideographic style called Kanji. The official song title of WAGAKKI BAND consists of three Kanji, "Hana + Furu + Mai". If this is divided into two words, + , it will be as follows. In general, "Furumai" means human behavior or giving something to many people. For example, in Japanese, "beer-wo-furumau" means "give everyone a beer." The title of the song means "gift flowers to people". Next, it can be interpreted by dividing it into the meanings of the three Kanji, + + . In this case, "Furu" means "fall" like "Yuki-ga-furu (= snow falls)". "Mai" is a noun for dancing. In other words, the title "Hana Furumai" means "dancing under the falling petals." (From Japanese who are not good at English)
Very nice reaction ! I never have enough of shamisen mixed with modern instruments. I highly suggest checking vids from "the first take" channel, if you want to listen to some very interesting recordings of japanese artists.
Someone, ages ago, commented on the light sticks in the audience. In Japan, it is illegal (from what I've been able to determine) to have a cell phone in these concerts, so the venue provides the light sticks for attendees as a way to join in with the performers, and do there is no illegal recording/pirating of the show. This protects the performers as well as the venue. (In theory if not in practice.) I have to interject a personal note here: Asa, the Bassist; is in this particular presentation, obviously a man. My introduction to this group was Homura and Akatsuki no Ito. His performance there was, as usual, phenomenal. Except that in that show he was wearing a choker that obscured his (very small) Adams apple... I kept pausing the show to make a determination as to HIS gender, but just couldn't make the connection. Since then I have heard him speak and sing, so there is no confusion any longer. I just wanted to clear that up if anyone else out there had been confused too.
Wonderful video. Wagakki Band have lots of amazing songs, some more metal, some more tradition Japanese like and some others that seem like poetry. I think you should do a react of a live symphonic version of “Sabaku no komoriuta”. It’s quite an experience
The cloth are sold as souvenir at the venue, usually only available limited to the venue or through fan club sales, basically it's a merch the organizers made, it's a towel you swing when needed and wipe your sweat with after jumping around,
Not a recorder, a Shakuhachi, strictlu speaking a flute. I had one. Difficult to play because of the mouth instrument interface, like a cut off whistle. Look it up !!! As for spinning item, I have no idea, outside of the (US) NFL, "Terrible Towel", weilded by fans of a team here. But pretty sure it has different origins.....

hello. I am a Japanese, and livin in Japan, and I've done it before. But I don't know what towel spinning means exactly. It seems from around the year 2000 or so, reggae musicians started to do it in the exciting point of their live performances, and do it with the audience. I think it has become more common live peformance now, even in the other genre. In my opinion, it is a making a sense of unity. It may be similar to singalong or jumping together.
Great video. I'm so glad to see you reacting to Wagakki Band. I've been a fan of theirs for a few years and Yuko is one of the most interesting vocalists I've heard. By the way, metal can work with R&B. Living Colour, for example.

Give a live version of Hikari Furu a try, maybe Lacrimosa? Hope you review some more Wagakki Band in the future, Yuko is a really impressive vocalist. She's obviously the star but guitarist Shin Matsuya was lead vocalist in a previous band & his contributions can't be overlooked.

Regarding the comment about pitch. Many eastern languages are tonal and use pitch to give different meanings to their sounds. Japanese has a bit of that too, but I believe is more like accentuations in Spanish. And not full pitch inflection per syllable that you can hear in Mandarin. So I doubt it really has that much of an effect in pitch control for Japanese speakers. At least not anymore than it would for a Spanish speaker.

I beg to differ on metal can not be mixed with R&B, just listen to Black Sabbath, Ozzy wanted to be an R&B singer. In particular, listen to Black Sabbath's song "Changes" . Then search for an R&B singer named Charles Bradley, he sings a cover of Sabbath's "Changes".
The piece of material is a scarf, Babymetal use it in Pa Pa Ya and football fans around the world do it as well. Why does metal work so well with other genres, well that maybe down to how it's structured. Most metal music is structured in the same way classical music is, so it becomes very adaptable, as a lot of other styles have some from of basic classical form behind it and all you have to do is change the the tone. And that tone change can add to a song, but take it away and it seams to lose something. Another Japanese singer for you that sings very much in the same style, but is total untrained, but maybe one of the best metal singers in Japan if not the world is Fuki from Unlucky Morpheus. So could you try, please Unlucky Morpheus - "Tower of the Blood" or "Dignity of Spirit"
Why does Metal (lml,) work better with every style more so than R&B, you ask? Well, simply, because Metal (lml,) draws from traditional styles more than R&B. True Facts. !m!,

If this is divided into two words, + , it will be as follows.
In general, "Furumai" means human behavior or giving something to many people. For example, in Japanese, "beer-wo-furumau" means "give everyone a beer."
The title of the song means "gift flowers to people".
Next, it can be interpreted by dividing it into the meanings of the three Kanji, + + .
In this case, "Furu" means "fall" like "Yuki-ga-furu (= snow falls)". "Mai" is a noun for dancing.
In other words, the title "Hana Furumai" means "dancing under the falling petals."
(From Japanese who are not good at English)
Very nice reaction ! I never have enough of shamisen mixed with modern instruments. I highly suggest checking vids from "the first take" channel, if you want to listen to some very interesting recordings of japanese artists.
Someone, ages ago, commented on the light sticks in the audience. In Japan, it is illegal (from what I've been able to determine) to have a cell phone in these concerts, so the venue provides the light sticks for attendees as a way to join in with the performers, and do there is no illegal recording/pirating of the show. This protects the performers as well as the venue. (In theory if not in practice.)
I have to interject a personal note here: Asa, the Bassist; is in this particular presentation, obviously a man.
Hi Beth, what has taken you so long to find Yuko and the Wagakki band? They are one of the worlds best bands at the moment.
Yuko Suzuhana is always amazing. She is the best female Japanese singer I have head, and I have listened to a lot of them.
Please listen to LiSA’s “Gurenge” on TheFirstTake. Her voice is beautiful!
I actually prefer "Homura". Both are fine, tho.
finally!! their best live perfomances are in 2017,2018 and 2020
Perhaps you’d like to check their ”ikusa” and ”Perfect Blue” - really nice melodical songs.
Please react Wagakki band / Bring Me To Life with Amy Lee of EVANESCENCE
But pretty sure it has different origins.....
waggakki band are amazing musicians
Try to listen to Strong Fate by them, you will find much more Shigin style performed by Yuko (The vocalist)

"Why metal works with every style? maybe not RNB", try Nightlife- New Low, it works! And it's nice to see you are reacting to Wagakki, i'd love to see you listening to Roku-chounen to ichiya monogatari
N if you are fan of jazz, listen also to synchronicity... Also, some of my fav wagakki band's song are yoshiwara lament, senbonzakura n also their combination with amy lee in bring me to life...
That was a great example, thanks
4:51 "maybe not R&B"
I'm certain Babymetal can do it, just check out a song by them like: Shanti Shanti Shanti. It has great singing too. Or Night Night Burn for a pretty crazy mix of genres/styles.
If you want a pretty new example of Yuko Suzuhana's singing accompanied by piano alone, in a single take, check out this video.
ruclips.net/video/k3ONv60HfL0/видео.html
On a side note Yuko Suzuhana won the grand prize in the Youth Division of the National Ginpo Concours, so it makes sense that she show off those skills by accompanying herself for said take, prerecording that piano part then doing the vocals to her own piano.
Hi Beth, Simone does Disney :)
Part of your World - The Little Mermaid (Cover by Simone Simons)
You should definitely react to Graham Bonett he is one of the most underrated rock metal singers and has a insanely unique voice
Great video. I'm so glad to see you reacting to Wagakki Band. I've been a fan of theirs for a few years and Yuko is one of the most interesting vocalists I've heard. By the way, metal can work with R&B. Living Colour, for example.
Sounds like something from an epic anime fight scene.
I love it.
my music world is colliding. i never thought i'd see you react to WGB!
More Japanese bands please! My favorite are LoveBites, and their singer Asami blows me away!
You should see Yuko sing with Amy Lee, it's amazing!!
A touch of metal makes everything better 😁 Also, singing fuel tank. Love it.
Metal works with most folk/traditional styles of music because in it's core it's highly melodic.
If you wanna see real epic stuff from Wagakki-Band try this. "Senbonzakura" live from Dai Shinnenkai 2018 or Wagakki Band with Amy Lee "Bring me back to life" or "Homura" + "Akatsuki no Ito" from their first tour in 2015. It will blow your mind away young Lady, i promise you that !
Their costumes are beautiful
You NEED to react to Swedish singer Benjamin Ingrosso and his song "Allt det Vackra". Yes, it is a song in Swedish but music is international and you will absolutely love it, i know it already!
Another Japanese act I'd love to see you review is Kalafina, they have (had, unfortunately broke up) three distinctly different singers in Keiko, Wakana and Hikaru.
GOOD❤😊😊😊😊😊
Love that you have a good variety of genre on your channel! Ever thought of checking out Maxïmo Park? The singer is pretty powerful live. :)
Let's not forget about Machiya's backing vocal
Queen of the Masquerade by Crimson Glory would be my next recommendation, Midnight's vocals are awesome
Yuko Suzuhana has a video with English captions in which she talks about her singing style and how she does it for Wagakki Band's version of Senbonzakura. ruclips.net/video/QLuU4nHgVzo/видео.html
Now you're reacting to japanese songs you should react to Minami kawaki wo ameku, It's a great song
Edit: waiting for the rain by Maaya Sakamoto is a great song to analyze
I have been thinking, you ought to react to Damien Rice AOL Session of "Volcano" with Lisa Hannigan, (I just watched your 'Nothing Compares 2 U' where you mention your love of Cello, and I immediately thought of this arrangement of "Volcano")
I haven't seen too many reactions to his music, and I think he's greatly underated, especially with Miss Lisa Hannigan!
ruclips.net/video/ZduDvIBu3EU/видео.html
Wagakki Band is awesome!
How about some neoclassical/ symphonic technical death metal?
Spawn Of Possession- Apparition (w/ lyrics) please
Regarding the comment about pitch. Many eastern languages are tonal and use pitch to give different meanings to their sounds. Japanese has a bit of that too, but I believe is more like accentuations in Spanish. And not full pitch inflection per syllable that you can hear in Mandarin. So I doubt it really has that much of an effect in pitch control for Japanese speakers. At least not anymore than it would for a Spanish speaker.
LMAO that's definitely not the original video you have linked there in the description hahahaha
Well BETH you did it again! New METAL FUSION BAND I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF. Now I have to buy more music and it's all your fault. METAL, METAL, METAL, METAL, did I say I love METAL!!! Even fusion METAL!!! Still sending you a hug from across the pond (U.S.). As always take care and be safe!!!
she doesn´t show off. yuko has one of the best voices, I´ve ever heard.
I really want you to react to "I Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop. Mickey Thomas is singing and I am VERY curious what you think of it.
I think something went a little bit wrong. In your video description, "Original Video: ruclips.net/video/eZvgzFluIUQ/видео.html"
8:53 that's the right question haha! I've been asking myself the same thing
If you enjoy folk songs to modern accompaniment you might enjoy group “Lee Nal Chi”.
Tsuki ni sakebu yoru from wagakki.. verry nice theater musical.. please next reaction
Well, you indeed promised us something "joyous" in your last upload lol! That song wasn't even creepy, Beth. That was just a Billie Eilish-esque pop song, nothing else.
It would be interesting to see you react to La Dispute- King Park
hello, what a great reaction, please react again to ptx songs. Thank you. greetings from Ecuador
Have you reacted to First Take Channel? There's ton of talents there ;)
Upvote this! I wish she react to LiSA - Homura (1st take)
Why does metal work with every style? Because it makes every style more badass.
👉 Yuko Suzuhana with the Tokyo College of Music Orchestra - Senbonzakura

Cmy favorite RUclipsr 😊😊💞
have you listened to songs by ado?
4 popular songs are: usseewa, odo, rabuka, giragira
The First Take is also a youtube channel i think you would like. they get various artists onto their channel and do a single take recording.
Great list. Thanks I'll check these out! Thanks a lot.
Since First Take is Sony own channel. I afraid they're quite stingy about copyright.
right before you said, "there!" i think she already breathed twice. they were very short though.
You should try the trillion years one
Jelly Roll "Save Me" There's a reason why a white rapper from Tennessee has 64 million views on a song he did where he doesn't rap at all. I don't want to give it away bit EVERYONE that has watched the video and every reactor has the same response and it would be awesome to see yours!
Diablo Swing Orchestra: Swing and Metal fusion.
Hey Beth, there's another music genre that can sound very, VERY good when combined with metal. Check out "A Tap Dancer's Dilemma" by Diablo Swing Orchestra.
Their name may give the genre away, but this song really blew me away from start to finish, first time I heard it. Dunno if the singing is very special in this song, so maybe it's more of a personal recommendation. To you and everybody on earth. Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/-1KLHV8zRZA/видео.html
Could you react to Aurelio Voltaire? Please!
YUKO is godess❗️🎶😊
I beg to differ on metal can not be mixed with R&B, just listen to Black Sabbath, Ozzy wanted to be an R&B singer. In particular, listen to Black Sabbath's song "Changes" . Then search for an R&B singer named Charles Bradley, he sings a cover of Sabbath's "Changes".
Looks like Yuko does have ashtma, there's inhaler and oxygen canister ready at the stage for her.
Could you please do a reaction to koreans best singer Kim Taeyeon?
Hi Beth! Please react to Guckkasten "Lazenca save us" live, and L'arc en Ciel (any song)
Recommended song. → Wagakki Band ft. Amy Lee: Senbonzakura/ 千本桜 ruclips.net/video/izYrlI2zqA8/видео.html
和楽器バンドの華振舞ライブ映像は、幾つも有るけど、この2016年の大新年会のライブが一番良いね。これを選んだ貴女は、流石ですね。
babymetal- road of resistance
Please react to Christina Perri Jar of Hearts (10th anniversary acoustic) Thank you.
you should watch them singing bring me to life with amy lee
Done !
Why does Metal (lml,) work better with every style more so than R&B, you ask? Well, simply, because Metal (lml,) draws from traditional styles more than R&B. True Facts. !m!,
Beth 😍 😍
Please react to Flying by Anathema from Universal DVD
