They were actually dicks though. If you want to have a natural born child, sure, great go do your thing. But in this case they were wiping out an entire species. Imagine if two parents decided, on their own, that humans should no longer exist and wiped out humanity. They are terrorists that abandoned their child. The general is the good guy, fighting for his people's survival and Superman is a genocidal traitor.

Regardless of the reason he won, Jor-El's fighting ability and victory over Zod proves his philosophy is true; that no one is truly confined to what Kryptonian society had intended for it's individuals. He was bred to be a scientist but he was able to match a military general pound-for-pound in combat because he believed he could be something else. That's pretty cool imo

Well, Jor-El was the smartest man of a civilization hundred thousand years more advanced than earth's...and unlike other kryptonians , who only lived according to the role society had given them by birth , he had a much broader view of life (which he then passed on to Kal, whose existence is the embodiment of those beliefs , as Jor-El himself stated in this movie) .
That being said , it's not unlikely that he studied and mastered many aspects of knowledge , thanks to his immense intellect , and that allowed him to get incredibly good at spacecrafting (he designed the ships he and his brother used in order to send their respective children to earth) , geology , biology , politics , philosophy and most likely even combat.
Which is why he was able to defeat Zod.

Infact all the guilded on krypton were maniacs, hence why they were all so obcenely arrogant, riddled with engineers disease & had an inhumanely brutal criminal justice system. it's no thematic accident that here on earth kyptonians rival the litteral gods of the DC universe.

The way she looks at Jor-El before making the final decision...Incredible. For that split second when Zod asked her to abort the launch, she considered it and hesitated. Then, upon looking at the visage of her husband, she immediately knew the right choice. That unspoken bond, that trust in love, that unspeakable and unshakable faith suddenly came rushing back and, without another moments notice, she pressed the button to send her child to safety.

Shannon's superb acting and this scene alone really establish Zod as a tragic character, a villain with an understandable and relatable motivation. This sets up the conflict of the story perfectly as one of oppossite points of view that ultimately aim at achieving the same goal.

@@kanjixp1761 you have got to be kidding me. Man of Steel in my opinion was the absolute highlight of the entire DCEU thus far. Which is unfortunate, considering it was the very first of the DCEU. But its the truth. The world building and ALL of the scenes in Krypton are so incredible. On top of that with Hans Zimmers score I found Man of Steel to have the single best first 10-15 minutes of any superhero movie I've ever seen.
Sure its not a perfect movie. I can absolutely agree with that. There's alot about it that isn't great. And there's alot about it that only becomes great in the context of the bigger picture (once you've seen the rest of the movies I mean) which of course doesn't make it a good movie on its own. Quite the opposite. But again, if you have seen the rest of the series, there's definitely things you'll notice upon re-watching Man of Steel that I know people appreciate.
It's an excruciatingly respectful homage to the character and his origins. And although yes, its darker and more brooding than anything Superman related we'd seen in the mainstream before, its not like its anything new. We've seen darker Superman stories from DC before. Just not in live action film. If Christopher Reeve was more your style then I get it. But I'm sorry to inform you that his portrayal is dated, and at this point no longer even comic accurate. I mean it wasn't really even back then.
Again, yes. Its dark. But again, in the context of the entire DCEU: it was clear Snyder was working towards some sort of live action adaptation of the Injustice video game storyline. Which is absolutely incredible throughout.
I would have loved to see a Superman with a darker story, who goes through too much heartbreak and snaps. Falling to Darksieds influence.
On top of that the action was well executed and INTENSE. Man of Steel honestly and truly is the single best Superman movie we've ever gotten.

In case you're not aware, there already is a sequel. It's called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It beautifully continues the Superman story by having him die for an Earth that's grown sour towards his ideals. His death heals Bruce Wayne's wounds and gives him the second chance he needs to become a complete hero by forming the Justice League. Superman assumes Jor-El's role at the end of that movie, as he sacrifices for a better tomorrow, being planted in the Earth as a seed that will create life in the future. It's truly a beautiful, epic, and ambitious story that most superhero fans don't appreciate as much as they should.

4:18 the look of regret right there is good. What I like about this is Zod isn't really evil he just wants to save his people no matter the cost. He even tries to appeal to superman and admits that he regrets killing his dad. He's the villain sure but he doesn't really turn bloodthirsty and full on evil until Superman kills all his people except for him and at that point well it's expected.
For the record I am not trying to defend him or say that his actions are fine and that he's not a bad guy. I was just arguing that he wasn't the standard "pure evil" right away.

Zod's intentions are good but hes too much of a product of his environment. The old ways of Krypton are too ingrained in him, hes basically radicalised from fierce pride and archaic beliefs. Rather than coexist with humans (which is unthinkable) theres only one drastic solution to him.

He's a scientist but if he wanted to learn something outside of his field he would find a way to do it. And fighting, how the body works and how to damage it, is partly a science

The icing on the already amazing cake that is MOS Zod’s character is the fact that he doesn’t kill Laura in a fit of anger after she talks back to him. Something I find really interesting about this moment is the tear that falls down Lara's face right before Kal-El gets placed into the pod. The premise of Krypton is that she and Jor-El are born and bred science officers and are therefore meant to be devoid of emotion and morality. But when Lara had Kal-El, she became a true mother and with that comes the emotional connection that only a mother can have with her child. That bond is stronger than just about anything in this world, and it is represented perfectly in this scene and when Lara questions for just a moment of letting him go, because she was afraid for his life, you can't copy that kind of emotional depth. And something else, if there are people who think that Zod is just another carbon copy one-dimensional villain with no story and motivation, then they obviously haven't been paying attention to this moment. He was fighting for the continuation of his people, and he did not want to kill Jor-El, but in his mind, he had to to ensure the survival of his people. He tried to appeal to Clark and to get him on his side, to make him see the futility in trying to protect humanity, when he could be a part of the restoration of Krypton.

Well EL isn't just a scientist, he's actually pretty capable of fighting back, He just never wanted to be pulled into kryptons political bullshit. The general believes EL that the planet was going to be destroyed.. So he acted rationally to try to save his race. Kinda sad honestly.. Nobody was truly evil, they were just stressed the fuck out.

Who those wandering how Jor El was able to beat Zod. I remind you that before focusing in being a scientist Jor El was also in the military and was train as a elite soldier before retired in being a scientist. That's how he knows Zod in the first place and were friends before all this happen.
And also, take in consideration that he was figthing to protect not only his son but the legacy of all Kripton.
So i imagine that give him a boost.

This movie is a masterpiece. We are not the few, the few are the poor minded people who can't grasp the origin story of Superman so greatly displayed here. They took the alien origin and hope associated with superman and made it so tangible and real. They definitely needed to start with superman and do superman 2 too. Solo movies was a better idea from the start just like Marvel did. I don't really know what WB had to do to screw up DCs original plan (if this is all true), but if they really were the ones that fucked everything up, I hope they suffer.

@Raichu88 Your comment in itself spells the reason why there was not a sequel ... not a well received movie. And as far as the other DC movies that followed they were complete disappointments. DC’s Studio needs a Revamp and they NEED to stay true to the Source material.
BATMAN & SUPERMAN ALONE can Beat what MARVEL has produced. It’s a true shame how they’ve messed up all there super hero movies post Chris Nolan. DC’s Superhero’s deserve better!
