    I'm a retired (40 plus years} photojournalist and this one of the best reviews on any photo product I've ever seen on RUclips. I love the point about using the gear and NOT focusing on shooting and wasting time on charts. Shoot on brother.

      Wow this is honestly one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. I appreciate that coming from someone with your experience. I just noticed that great photographers have never blamed their gear but worked with what they had.

      I’m in the nearly the same boat; 40 year corporate, editorial illustration and studio guy. I’m not really into Fuji, but I bought the 18mm, then too many more, including the 16. Just sold them all, except the 18! I’m a Canon user and own all the Zeiss primes, my fav being the Zeiss 28 Distagon.
      It’s not about the gear as long as it doesn’t get in the way.
      Edit: but I must add, if a piece of kit makes exciting images, go for it.

    Dude, thank you SO MUCH for this video!! I keep seeing all these technical reviews looking at brick walls and zooms to 400% only because in normal shooting two lenses are so close in performance. Like you said, take photos and get them as close to right as possible, then judge how the lens did when used properly. I'm kicking myself debating Micro Four Thirds, Nikon Full Frame (already own) and Fuji APS-C. Months of time spent trying to pick that right mix of lenses and bodies. In the end it may be an old X-T1, X-T10 and some great F2 Fuji primes along with a couple XC lenses for when I need a zoom (not pro work). So refreshing...just shoot images. That's it and I needed to hear it. You're the man!! Thank you sincerely.

    I've had the 18 mm f2 for around 4 years - bought it when it was on sale new for $299 - Great lens and I've never understood the hate this lens has received. Sharp enough, wide enough, fast enough... great lens. Plus it's SMALL. The price wasn't bad either.

    The 18mm at f2 creates this fabulous almost painterly like look to backgrounds. You can identify the scene and place but it softens it just enough to make your subject pop. You then put your camera and lens in your jacket pocket and continue with your travels.

Took test shots, and immediately loved the photos taken with the 18mmf2, which I had never considered in the first place! I knew I’d get a lot of use out of it, so I got it and never looked back.

As someone new to photography, I'm trying to find the best ways to spend a reasonable budget on primes that will serve me well for the type of shooting I'm interested in (travel, street, architecture, some portraiture). I've started with the XF35mmf2, which I really like, but now I want to add something with a wider FOV. And I absolutely love the short length of this lens for portability.

    I just got an X-E4, after selling a Full Frame Nikon Z6. I have baby nieces growing, family and hobbies where I just want some portability and nice photos to look back on. I never really took the Nikon anywhere. It didn't inspire, it was heavy, bulky and I thought I needed that camera, lol. Why'd I get the X-E4? I know it's just marketing, but if "make more, with less," is accurate, it might well be the camera that gets me out of my way to explore this creative medium. Second hand and with the 27mm lens. I don't know if it's the lens for me, but there's only one way to find out, before (and like you say) I waste my money. So thank you. You've got yourself another subscriber. I was really disappointed when the 18 1.4 came out.it’s just not a thing I would be able to be spontaneous with. If I want to go wide, I’ll go with the excellent 14 2.8. The 18f2 is a great lens. Owned one since the XPro1 came out. I look after my gear generally but I did drop the 18f2 on to a pavement when changing lenses and it survived without a mark. Bullet proof construction, lovely focal length and lovely images from it. It’s a bit noisy when focussing at times but I can live with that. I use it with an XPro2 and XE3 and it’s always with me. Love your ATT-I-TUDE :D Been going back and forth on 1.4 vs 2.0 on other focal lengths and everyone talks about the "magic" of the 1.4s. I looked at a bunch of shots on flickr and think I see more amazing shots with the F1.4s that just draw you in but plenty of outstanding F2.0 shots that have a lot of that quality too.
    And then there was a shot I LOVED and looked at info and it was taken with an 18-135mm!! Now, folks dismiss that as a amateur super-zoom travel lens. I own it and LOVE it and thought "guess I'm not *professional* enough to appreciate the difference", LOL. I've been blown away by the kind of photos I can get out of that lens and my lowly 27mm. So shoot what you brung I guess.

    This is an great example of explaining why an older, less expensive lens can sometimes be the best choice. I own both Fujifilm 16mm primes, but I use my 18mm f2 way more often, for exactly the reasons you mention. Thanks for this video!
    A thought: When discussing lenses in the context of APSC sensor cameras like the Fujifilm X-Series, I encourage you to differentiate between “focal length” and “field of view”. In this video I think I heard you refer to the Fuji 18mm f2 lens as a “28mm focal length”, which isn’t true - this lens has a focal length of 18mm, which on APSC sensors gives you a “28mm field of view”.
    When I’m talking lenses with photographer friends who use “full frame” cameras, I’ll say that I want to have 28mm and 50mm fields of view (or 28mm- and 50mm equivalents), which for the X-Series means 18mm and 35mm focal lengths.
    Otherwise, great job with this video!

    It's worth noting that the distortion you didn't like in the 16mm was due to your placement as a shooter- not the lens. That's how nose enlargement and such happens.

    • @DeeRosa
      @DeeRosa  Год назад +1

      Perspective distortion is more than just close up portraits. Any photo of a person elongate extremities and facial features. It’s just a law of optics.

    • @SourPlanet
      @SourPlanet Год назад

      @@DeeRosa Yes. That is what I was saying. It was cited as distortion due to the lens, but it's the position of the photographer which causes it. Hence the need for telephotos - to relocate the photographer away from subject.
      Incorrect about any photo elongated extremities, though. Indeed compression causes the opposite effect as you move lower in FOV.

    I never understood why people on RUclips shits on this lens. I am DEEP in the Fujifilm X system and my first two lenses I got with my X-E1 back in 2012 was the XF35 f1.4 and the XF18 f2. I did not get them for fast action (that's what my Nikon DSLRs are for) or video. Those two lenses are still in my daily bag today as they cover everything I need.
    I have Yet to see anything bad with the 18mm, except for the occasional AF slight miss, but overall it's a Great street, documentary and intimate casual lens.
    I also have all the other fast prime lenses but those are for special projects and paid work and hardly ever gets the time my 18 and 35 does in my personal work.
    It also kills me that pixel peeping these lenses is a thing when almost everyone will not go beyond IG or any other online posting with their photos.

      Well put and I have the same setup for all of my work as well. Yes it's unfortunate that people can write off a whole lens because it isn't as sharp as the 56 1.2 or even weirder photographers write off a lens because it ain't good for video or they don't like how it doesn't focus as quick as others... Just baffles me.

      Since Ken "the angry photographer" says it's a bad lens, that's why so many shit on this lens. Ken is a fake! It is unbelievable that people listen to his shit. He's been caught lying and bullshit so many times. There are a few good Fuji channels on youtube . Omar is very good and there are a few more. This channel is good so far too, and hope it stays that way.

    I like the 18mm f2 also, When they first came out years ago, Fujifilm had $200 factory rebates and things were cheaper then. If you live in the San Antonio area, do you know Jessie Acosta? He wad a street photography channel about 6 years ago that I really enjoyed, but he stopped all of a sudden. Just curious.

      I actually just moved here so I don't know him but I'll look him up! Yes I love the 18mm. Not to say there aren't better lenses (because they are) but people want it to be something that it's not everytime I hear a review. It's a great lens but when you want it to be a portrait lens or a macro or etc etc it'll always fail as will any lens.

    Great review! Recently seeing more people showing long overdue respect & love to the 18mmf2. It is absolutely my favorite Fuji Lens for all the reasons you expressed. It is the perfect compromise without having to compromise. I have about 4 friends I have introduced to the FujiFilm world and each one of them I insist they get the 18mm as their first if not only Fuji lens. With that being said, I bought the 16mm f1.4 well before I owned the 18mm. The 16mm is an amazing lens. There are two applications I hands down use the 16mm over the 18mm... A) Indoor Architecture/furnished space photos. B) Outdoors when the weather bad.... 16mmf1.4 / 18mmf2 / 23mmf1.4 / 35mmf1.4 / 60mmf2.4 that my fab five starting lineup. On another note, I have the original 27mmf2.8, that turd has no redeeming qualities hahahaha

    • @DeeRosa
      @DeeRosa  3 года назад +2

      that's a good lineup! i don't much care for the 16 or 23 as i never really reached for them in any application other than feeling guilty for not using them lol. haven't worked enough with the 60 to give an opinion but nice lineup!

    • @hutch312
      @hutch312 3 года назад

      @@DeeRosa There is certainly a division of use in the lineup, for the enjoyment of photography/street shooting/travel/vacation the 18mm & 35mm are my go to, they have so much soul and character compared to most of the other lenses. I like the fact that they have some much uniqueness, really feel like I can paint with them rather than just capturing. Totally content to have either one or both with me for personal use & work. As work tools the 16/23/60mm have been life savers when I need to shoot spaces or products. That 16/23 combo comes is so handy when I have to shoot large items in limited space (if I really need to take people pics the 23mm & 60mm are a decent portrait shooter in a pinch). It is close focusing of the 16mm that starts to shine in that limited space without getting too much distortion. The 60mm is probably the least covered and often overlooked lens in the community but it is my champ for studio product photography and for the size & price it is pretty amazing.

      Yeah of course. The biggest thing that you'll need with the 18 f2 that you can get away with on a 50mm equiv lens is your shot HAS to be balanced. If both sides don't weight the same of the color isn't evenly distributed you're gonna be cropping in a lot.

    Just a side note, 16mm f2.8 is pretty nifty as well! Especially for the price. And financially a lot safer bet than f1.4 if you want to toy with that focal length :) Had I bought the f1.4 I’d feel a lot of pressure to make the most out of it, but the f2.8 version I can just put on whenever I want to get a bit off my comfort zone (i.e. 28mm-50mm range).
    That new 18mm f1.4 is pretty amazing, though. But I wouldn’t use it as an everyday carry -type of lens on my Xpro3. Definitely not a lens you’d like to have on for a night out with your fiancee.
