The question is why Vince allowed Michaels and Triple H to talk him into Bret beating Dwayne, when guys like Pat Patterson and Jim Cornette were convinced that Dwayne was the future and would go through the roof.
And Vince typically liked bigger guys. Shawn was even smaller than Bret. Why he made an exception for a guy who didn’t draw money for him is beyond me. Yes, Shawn was athletic and good in the ring. But if you don’t draw big money, you’re useless. Shawn was burying young talent while Bret was helping guys like Austin and Dwayne get over. If Shawn hadn’t taken himself out, things could have been very different.
It was a different era. Notice that Bret actually refused to beat Dwayne. He refused an order from Vince. Wrestlers seem to have more weight back then.

Hunter and Shawn destroyed WWE. Bret in charge of WWE would have been a very different, but vastly superior. We'd have characters, but also great matches, ring psychology, and expertly crafted storytelling for EVERYONE.
While watching the Olympics this year, I couldn't help but think that in an alternate universe where Hunter and Shawn didn't exist, and Bret was Vince's trusted voice and creative mind, WWE would have been seen as a true art form and sport. Landing it in the Olympics where the wrestlers in WWE and worldwide would have their ring work ranked. All because Bret took it out of the sports entertainment gutter and into a professional realm of athleticism and structural contests. It's such a shame that we're in the timeline where, aside from the women who actually try to make wrestling legit sport, we're stuck in no-selling, lousy stories, injuries galore and guys who all look alike. Just like Trips and HBK wanted.
That's debatable. Bret famously hated the direction the WWF was taking with the Attitude Era. With him in charge, the WWF doesn't adapt to the times, and they get eaten alive by the WCW.
(Also, it's a bit weird to say Bret would have given "expertly crafted storylines" to everyone, and then say he'd land pro wrestling in the Olympics, where storylines wouldn't happen at all.)
Here we go again. Another clickbait Inside The Ropes video designed to push the 'bitter Bret' narrative. I can guarantee that most of the people who will comment here won't have even bothered to watch it (he's not really 'whining' or 'crying', just telling the facts and even smiling through most of it) and won't consider that maybe Bret does actually have legitimate reasons to feel angry with Shawn and Triple H. He's hardly the only one who had problems with them, after all.

It was very normal for the times backstage politics. They were all fighting against unbelievable competition and they all did anything they could to get an edge, including crying to Vince, and yea, if you were good enough, Vince listened. So what.
