I don't. The '60s was actually a very sad decade as thousands of gay men were dying of AIDS in their prime in that decade. I was on the front lines as a hospital-based social worker; it was a nightmare. The music was indeed fabulous (some of it, not all of it).But I can relate to your comment as I wish the '70s back so much, not the '80s.
This is the greatest Hi NRG song ever written. It's all about the major to minor chord sequence in that wonderful verse (G - Cm) Gorgeous. Love every version for different reasons. the rawhide mix of this is possibly the campest thing I've ever heard!
I suspect Hazell's version failed to cut through commercially here in the states because at the time of its release there were loads of Hi-NRG records being released and it probably got lost in the competition Liza's version is quite "un-Liza-like" in that she sounds more pop-dance than like the rather theatrical singer that is her trademark. (For the traditional Liza on that album you have to hear "I Want You Now".) I prefer Liza and the Pet Shop Boys version of this great song, but Hazell's version is excellent as well. I mostly associate Hazell with "Searching" and her version of "If You Could Read My Mind". I thought she was a black singer at the time, but only recently learned she was an English songbird. She's wonderful and yes, she should've been bigger in the USA but she was big with DJs and dancers in the discos in that era.
I have to disagree strongly. Yvonne’s may be the original but she didn’t sound like she had any concept of the internal conflict that the words convey.
Tony Cowdrill I can't help think that people read too much into a song and it's lyrics. It's all about whether you like the rhythm and whether you can dance to it. Just enjoy it fir what it is.

Only 2 month later after this release Liza Minelli came out with the same song (by PetShopBoys) and Hazell had no chance with this version. So sad. This version from Hazell is much better. But the name "Lize Minelli" was like a rocket to push her version up to the top of the pops
i don't know which version of top of the pops this was shown on as usually if it didn't enter the top 40 they were not shown on the uk top of the pops. Hazell's version i prefer also

I'm not mother Teresa but I'm not an angel either and certainly don't need total strangers judging me for things that happened 35 years ago thank you very much.

I am just trying to understand why the use of poppers is such a common ocurrence among gay men (especially during sex!) Is that not a dangerous thing to do? Also, not using drugs =/= being an angel or a saint. It just means that you have never used drugs.
