1984 was very challenging for gay men like me. I was 20 years old in 1984 and spent those years having to deal with homophobes, and also concerned about aids which we were beginning to hear about. A night at Heaven in Central London or at the Copacabana in Earls Court dancing to Hazel Dean and so many other greats gave us something wonderful. Thanks so much
This should have been a MASSIVE hit in Pop and Hazell Dean herself should have become a BIG star herself. Regardless, this is a CLASSIC that will remain a trend of its own.
This was on TOTP2 when I was about 12 and me and my mum were arguing - When the beat changes and the lights start flashing we both looked at each other and started laughing, it completely resolved our argument :D :D I love this song it's so fun :D
The gay community have always recognised her. Saw her in Leeds a few years back and the venue was heaving, a full 30 years after she was in the charts.
Hazell Dean (née Poole; born 27 October 1952)[2] is an English dance-pop singer, who achieved her biggest success in the 1980s as a leading hi-NRG artist. She is best known for the top-ten hits in the United Kingdom "Searchin' (I Gotta Find a Man)", "Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)" and "Who's Leaving Who". She has also worked as a songwriter and producer. Career Dean was born in Great Baddow, Essex. She started her career in the mid-1970s and came to prominence in the following decade after many years as a club performer and working on the gay scene with her brand of hi-NRG. She was elected three times the "Best Live Performer" by the "Federation of American Dance Clubs" (US), and twice a "Best British Performer" by "Club Mirror Awards" (UK). Dean started her career signed to Decca Records releasing a few pop/soul singles from the mid to late '70s written and produced by Paul Curtis. Dean participated in the A Song for Europe contest in 1976, and took eighth place (out of twelve) with the ballad, "I Couldn't Live Without You for a Day", written by contest veteran Curtis.[4] Dean's first album was first released in 1981. The Sound of Bacharach and David was a collection of covers written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and was only released promotionally to radio stations for them to use the songs to pad out their programming with songs they didn't have to pay so much for in royalties. A very rare album, it was re-released commercially for the first time in 2014. Dean also released a promotional double A-side single for the area of Medway ("Medway You're the One / Medway That's Where I Wanna Be") in 1982. This was re-discovered and put onto RUclips in 2017.[citation needed] Mainstream success Dean decided to put behind her pop/soul sound she had been recording, and issued her first dance record, "Searchin' (I Gotta Find a Man)" in the summer of 1983. While it was a big hit in gay clubs, it only peaked at #76. In February 1984 she entered the UK Singles Chart with the double A-sided single, "Evergreen" / "Jealous Love" which peaked at. In April 1984 Dean participated in "A Song For Europe" again, finishing in seventh place out of eight, with another dramatic ballad, "Stay In My Life", which she wrote herself. In June 1984, the re-release of "Searchin' (I Gotta Find A Man)" became her first single to reach the UK top 10, peaking at #6. Despite the success of the single, Dean says there was no follow-up in place even as it rose high in the charts, and when she accidentally ran into producer Pete Waterman at Proto Records, she agreed to consider working with his then little known team, Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW).
And what about Whitney Houston. Far better vocalist. 6 Grammy awards. Forgive me, but I don't think this woman got any? Best voice of the 80's ... not a chance! GREAT TUNE YES ... that's where it ends

Love this very embryonic SAW production, by the brilliant Hazel Dean. A real disco high energy classic, which was very rare at this time, Elvyen Thomas' High Energy being the other from 1984.
This was written and produced by Ian Anthony Stephens and released in April 1983. It was a massive club hit but took until April 1984 to get into the UK charts. "Whatever I Do, Wherever I Go" was Hazell's first track produced by SAW. The other hi-nrg trailblazer in 1983 was Miquel Brown's "So Many Men, So Little Time" produced by Ian Levine a year before he produced "High Energy" for Evelyn Thomas.
@@NRGRemixes1I've always hated that "High Energy" by Evelyn Thomas and the NRG sound in general because it sounds so corny and outdated. But I actually like Hazell Dean. To me she is the best act in that genre...
@@NRGRemixes1I learned only this week (July 2024) that Miquel Brown who sang the legendary Hi-Nrg hits was the mother of Sinitta another 80s star from this SAW production line. Small world

If you want to know where I get my campness from, then look no further! Hazell Dean's "Searchin' " was such a huge inspiration for me! I only saw it a few times on TV (Including this classic performance - look at that high-tech dance rountine! What was she wearing?!!), but mostly I heard it on thew radio (A LOT!). One of my Cousins also had it in their vinyle single collection, I remember. Well, I would sing it, out loud, all over the place (Much to my families sheer embarrasmment!). I was 8 years old - sexuality wasn't an issue to me (And with music it never has been). If I liked a song, I sang it, regardless of which gender it was aimed at! I just loved the tune and the catchiness of the song and I think it is still as fresh and as memorable today. Thanks Hazell. :-)
Sincerely Fabian for ever. México
Happy days miss it badly, I know it was a long time ago now but never forgotten x it was the year of Howard Jones Nik kershaw Hazel Dean the Thompson twins and more. X
