I saw Hazell Dean live at many clubs around the UK in the 90's she was beyond good, such an underestermated siinger fab memories cannot believe she is 69!
I was 10 when this wee classic floor filler came out , was one of my mums favourites, sadly no longer with us but I remember her singing it. Still listening to it in 2021, thank you for the memories
This song gave me the strength to stay out of a very violent relationship, this got me through the pain of leaving the one I love... My forever gratitude to Hazell Dean for making this song at the perfect time for the ending of that relationship xx
+Anita Pellegrine yes its very hard to leave a bad relationship, when you know its bad for you but you still love them, i suppose you have to love yourself more
I'd of got u through the pain of that relationship Anita my darling...you'd of forgot about it completely after a couple of hours with big Mickey boy😉x
Thank you Hazell. You got me through more heartbreaks than I care to count. Your kick ass music got me dressed up like Matt Goss and back on the scene every Saturday night in search of another one.
'Whatever I Do' was S/A/W's first top 10 hit and in my opinion one of the best things they did. Hazell Dean with a wonderfully self-sufficient swept-back hairdo delivers a female-empowerment anthem that more than holds its own with ‘I Will Survive’.
@@80ssynthfan48 I was really excited that there was going to be this new, exciting and fresh dance music, after Hazell, Divine and DOA. it all turned to mush, with Kylie etc....( Sorry .... NOT. a fan).
I don't hate it but it's pretty standard 80's pop ( why it came up in my feed is a mystery). She was never that big in the UK back then. Don't recall anyone I knew being a fan. Whereas I will Survive is a timeless anthem.
Hazell Dean felt like an older lady born in the 50's. I was born in 1964 But the music she made was extremely good 1980 -1986 today (2022) Had someone else done a cover of this music and become a real celebrity. Pure facts!
It's strange you should say that, my on/off Lady for the past thirty years was in a similar situation to Anita with her ex husband and the song that inspired her to leave him was I will survive. this song is miles better though
The great thing about TOTP is that any top 40 song could be asked to perform on a Thursday Evening. We got to see and hear songs that we just never would listen to given a choice. This is how we heard more obscure music, and how a song that's 40 in the charts can get a bit of attention then make a push all the way to No. 1 Those days are well, well gone, sadly 😔😔.
Always loved the programming on this. Takes the Blue Monday blueprint and develops it further. The boneshaking kick drum fills, clattering handclaps and relentless cowbells just force you to dance!
Kick drum fills? I own the linn drum used here, theres No fill ins on this track, its called crescendi, its simply digital staccato bass drum, the linn drum uses sampled sounds the unit is digital so you can programme any rythmn in real time that you want in chains of any time signiture, a fill is phil collins 4000e ssl tom fill, here its simple staccato, no fills, and in bars of 4 , 8, 16.

Saw her in Dublin in 2012. She was sensational. I had never heard much of her bar this and Who's Leaving Who. I was obsessed thereafter. She's so talented. Even her more recent stuff is amazing.
Definitely Blue Monday for me, rhythm-wise. There were another couple of tracks around that time that were similar as well: Divine - Love Reaction and Bobby O - Giving Up.
This song's dedicated to my ex-girlfriend! She's all alone now. Like the saying goes: KARMA...No need for revenge. Just sit back and wait. Those who hurt you will eventually screw up themselves and if you're lucky, God will let you watch! I did watch and now I'm rolling on the floor laughing!!!
Absolute belter of a tune - SAW's best work in my opinion. They peaked VERY early. (Yes I know the bass line is erm... influenced by New Order's "Blue Monday", but it moves on to be its own thing fairly swiftly).
Reminds me when I went out with my bank manager for 6 months to get that loan I always wanted...Didn't work even after playing this record😂.. 😂 great dance song lovely jubbly 🎉🎉🎉
I really miss the 80's. It was the last good decade
This performance epitomises everything which was great about the early 80s. Everyone happy, everyone having fun and a wonderful TOTPs era...
Gotta agree Simon!
This was obviously Mid 80's as 1984 was the fith year of the decade its not early in the 80's anymore by this stage.
Well who loves this still in 2024 ? 🖤👍me for sure 👊thanks Hazell Dean
me
had this on my mp3 player for last decade so been listening a long time
Still a straight up banger!
Brillant song ☺️👍
Absolute belter of a song, takes me back to my early 20's, such happy and simpler times the 80's. Happy memories!

It's so good. I go back to it and the album Heart First again and again. This is beautiful in the remastered version from a few years back.
This such a fantastic song, easily SAWs "arrival". I'd much rather have more of this to their later diluted pop stuff
@@stewartwelsh785 Crazy isn't it? This sound kicks ass, then they became the aural equivalent of being force-fed McDonalds.

Where did 30 years go lol great singing dancing hazell love ya happy days xx
She's not changed her look at all. She's timeless
Err? I think she has quite! She has a terrahawks cy-star type bowl cut now, where as here she has a modern layered urchin with fringe.
Never mind "I will Survive". This is the real anthem!
+Sapphire Sky Agree! Never liked I Will Survive. This is much better.
This is the stuff that truly gay anthemz are made of.
Hahahaha

Great song & a great voice!
The good old days when an act could enter the charts at 35...and still have a chance of reaching number 1!

Gosh ,still a great ditty to dance away the night
I love her dance moves. So cute
Absolute tune 😍
I was one when this came out. Still listening 🎶 in 2021. How catchy was this wee tune 🙌
beautiful song and great backup dancers, hard not to dance to this
I was 19 then now 56! Just a blink of an eye
Still listening in 2019 xx

Killer tune. Really interesting rhythm track as well, SAW really were underrated producers.
They were the kings of the 80s
Not underrated at all ,they owned the charts, with their upbeat electronic sound😄
Chris A.: You clearly were sleeping in the 80's...SAW were everything but underrated...they even won a "British producers of the year" award (1987).
SAW?

The 80s best time of my life ,all the best from Poland

This was Stock Aitken and Waterman's first hit as producers..and the rest they say is history.

Such a CLASSIC!!!
Maravilhosa ... amo você Hazell Dean
Powerful voice and a powerful sound. What a rythm ¡!!!!
High Energy was so cool
Great feel good tune, what a summer 1984 was.
Still sounds fantastic, seen her sing this in person
I didn't know this was the original! I love it (and I love Laura Branigan's song too)
Hazell covered Shattered Glass also. I enjoy both versions of each.
