I'm glad I came across your channel. My grandfather's brother emigrated to Cuba. He married a Cuban woman, but they never had any children. So it was nice to watch this video . Thanks.

Thanks for checking out my video. It would be an interesting place to live. At one time it was a bit like Vegas, so I'm told.

This was so interesting Dan. My great grandfather was a Szeto as well. And he like the many Chinese immigrated to Cuba in the late 1800s, and my grandpa never got to meet him. He wrote letters back home but the letters eventually stopped, and he never returned home as well. Thank you for sharing this video with us Dan !

Glad to hear your great grandfather's roots as a Szeto/ Seto. However, sad to hear about your grandpa's life circumstance. Thanks for viewing my video on History Of Cantonese Chinese In Cuba.

I know that it is weird to be asking this… but could you tell me his name? My great grandfather was named in cuba as T Untán because back in those days name registration was no good so I don’t really know what his original name and surname was, and he stopped sending letters to his family because he lost his ability to write cantonese and the only friend he had who helped him write the letters died at a young age. My generation of great grandchildren we still have 30% cantonese DNA but we know nothing about our origins 😢 We wish to go to china with my grandmother to let her meet her uncles and the rest of the family if still alive someday. ❤ sorry for telling all these and thank you for reading it 🫶

This is so amazing, not many people knew this but most of the first immigrants to America and the Caribbean were from the the 4 counties including my grandfather, he came from Yinping to Venezuela in the 50’s then he brought my father from HK and i was born as a first generation Chinese in Venezuela, i still speak the Yinping dialect which is amazing

Great to hear you can speak the Yinping dialect. Do you you have a chinatown or large population of 4 counties immigrants in your area?
I'll be doing some online lessons in the future on the 4 counties dilalect. Stay tuned because I'm interested in the differences in pronunciation and word usage of the 4 counties.
Thanks for viewing my video on History Of Cantonese Chinese In Cuba.

All humans are social by nature, there was a significant 4 counties colony in Venezuela 15 years ago, about 20 years ago we had a large influx of Chinese inmigrant from other areas, my guess it was probably Fujian, i emigrated to the USA about 15 years ago and i believe that some of the chinese has left because of the social and economic situation in Venezuela

And yes there was something call chinatown where we used to gather mainly on the weekends after working half day in our business to enjoy DimSum, shop for Chinese groceries and gossip as usual

This was very interesting for me because I had no idea that Chinese people immigrated to Cuba. China as well as Cuba was always a mystery to me, never to be probed because one wouldn't discover anything!!

I became interested in Cuba because the guy that bought my grandfather's restaurant was from Cuba. I was lucky to visit Cuba about 15 years ago. Thanks for checking out my channel and thanks for viewing this video on History Of Cantonese Chinese In Cuba.

It makes sense that not many Chinese are left in Cuba. It's not a wealthy country by any means.

Cuba used to be a gambling center like Vegas with a lot of American visitors. A lot of Chinese moved there and ran businesses. 1969 was the last year for them to leave. But they weren't allowed to take their money with them. If they had friends and families outside of Cuba, they would send them the money and move out of Cuba. The ones without overseas contacts, either moved out of Cuba without their money or stayed behind in Cuba. Thanks for checking out my video.
