I have been looking for a cheap DIY to set this exact trolling motor up on my oldtown bigwater. I think I found it, thank you so much sir, very well explained!
Hey thanks for making the video. I have the ascend 10 feet hybrid. I was thinking about doing this too and saw your video. Thank You and you sir have a new subscriber!
Hey bud, great job. I purchased my new hoodoo element 100s this winter. I fish a 990 acre lake. I also installed my transom mount, I used HD PVC, With a 2×6. Just an idea for you. I added aluminum on both sides where the motor clamps screw in. The wood will eventually crack. But I have the 2.5 Suzuki, since I only weigh 152lbs, and the motor weighs 29 lbs. Great build though..🎣🙏
Man, It’s been so long I can’t remember. Went to batteries plus got a Duracell and it fit perfectly in the little space in the ascend. Didn’t even move.
I love the motor mount you made I think I might do the same thing love the channel so I subscribed I can't believe you have just a little bit of subscribers
Tried to find it in the video what trolling motor is this? What size battery? I have this same kayak and I'm trying to gauge the cost to do this setup. I have some long paddles for duck hunting and this may save me TONS of paddle time lol
I got the cheapest min kota at Dicks sporting goods and I got a Duracell battery from batteries plus. I think the motor at the time was around 80 and the battery was around there as well. However, these days it’s going to be more expensive for sure.
I think you may have answered it already, but did you not need a counterweight? I duplicated your installation (haven't added a battery yet, and I haven't put it in the water yet). But just sitting on it in my basement, it seems very off balance, even though the motor I used is only about 12 pounds.
Hey Joe! I didn’t have a counter weight and I’m trying to remember my location of the battery. It’s been years since I have had Thai kayak. I think I put the battery in the middle section of the back. I used kind of a smaller battery and I may have my tackle Box or something on the other side but it never threw me off balance. It won’t affect you in the water in my opinion.
Well that’s a little tricky on one side but the motor is why you don’t need to paddle. Ha! No you have to do a short paddle on the side of the motor mount and a full paddle on the other side.
I got rid of this kayak a while ago and I can’t remember which trolling motor I had. I believe it was the cheapest minn kota I could get from Dicks sporting goods.
@@sjsjohn3845 it wasn’t bad… pretty light it was the cheapest one I could get at Dicks sporting goods… minn Kota transom mount C2 I believe freshwater one
Didn’t affect it at all really. I put my battery in the middle then I put a few things opposite side but didn’t really affect it . Definitely think having a trolling motor on the back in the middle would better but on this hybrid kayak it was the best option.
I bought the aluminum square tubing at Home Depot and then attached it to my kayak. Then I drew holes where I needed to drill holes for motor mount. Once I got all that done then I drew a line so I could cut off the excess and then put end caps on it. I can’t remember the exact length. I definitely had extra though

It worked really well for me.
Your trolling motor idea is exactly what I was thinking of doing. You did a great job with explaining. Thanks
Thanks!
Thanks so much for posting this, you just saved me about $ 180, nice easy and simple.
👊no problem it was fun!
Thanks for sharing going to try this on my lynx kayak
No problem it worked well for me and got me fishing on the water quickly with less paddling.

👊 hopefully you were able to get it going!
Awesome job on the motor mount.
Thank you!
Very nice and simple, good job, planning on doing the same thing
It was a lot of fun!

Nice!👊
Love this set up and will probably do something similar with mine. What battery block did you use?

I know! Ha! Hopefully get it up to at least 200 soon! Thanks for subscribing!

@@CoachWoodwardoutdoors Okay awesome appreciate the fast feedback! I think the cheapest now is around $120 at Cabelas.

Try putting your block under the aluminium bar, you won't have to lift yor arm as high when your sitting down.
@@kandoo1316 yes that is a good idea. I no longer have the boat but I would have done that. Thanks 👊
Are you able to get full paddle stroke with the motor mounted?

Will this work on my old town canoe
I’m sure you can rig it to fit. Can really work on any kayak or canoe just have to measure and have a long enough rod to put on the boat.
Good video. does this make the kayak go at an angle since its not mounted on the back or front?
The kayak went perfectly strait just had to hold the tiller handle a little off center.
Do you connect your trolling motor directly to battery and use no breaker box?
Directly to the battery.
What size trolling motor are you using? How much thrust?
I got rid of this kayak a while ago and I can’t remember which trolling motor I had. I believe it was the cheapest minn kota I could get from Dicks sporting goods.
How heavy is your trolling motor?

How to get it drive straight mine goes in circles 😅
Ha! It does take some time to steer but you eventually get the hang of it.
What about counter weight for the other side?

Hello there, what is the shaft length?

This is simple, but fairly unstable and inefficient. I still have my side mount, but my motor is on the back now, electronically controlled.
