  • This is Day 1 of our quick hotfooted weekend trip to the Brecon Beacons in Wales. The Brecons, also known as the Black Mountains are situated in the southern part of Wales and are probably the easiest for me to access (approx 4 to 5 hours drive) other than the North and South Downs.
The first day was a 11.3 mile circular hike up the Dragons Back in Powys, Wales. We parked the camper just before Pengenffordd in the Dragons Back car park. You need to put £2. In the honesty box.
This route takes you up to the summit of Waun Fach which at 810m and is the highest peak in the Black Mountains. Although there is an adjacent range called the Brecon Beacons that has a higher peak called Pen Y Fan that is 886m.
The route was a little longer than the standard route as we took a side trip up to the summit of Pen Y Gadair Fawr at 800m.
It was extremely windy, but the rain stopped just before we started and it turned out to be a sunny day with patchy clouds.
Apologies for the poor footage, but I was using the GoPro and it doesn’t cope with wind very well. Yes, you can buy external microphones and better camera equipment but I want to use an action camera as it’s lightweight and straightforward to use, it’s each to their own.
Please let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.
    I hope you enjoy.
    Best wishes,
    Tony - TFS Outdoors

Looked an impressive walk Tony. Glad the weather stayed good for you. The wind protector on your camera coped very well in the strong winds. I could see a resemblance to a dragons back on that hill. The most impressive dragons back hill I’ve seen is Chrome Hill in the Peak District. The likeness is uncanny. It’s almost like god designed it that way 😆

Thank Anthony, I knew there were other trails with the same name, but I wasn’t aware of
one in the Peak District. Thanks for the heads up, I will add that to my To Do list.

It's good up there Anthony - I see them from my home. It's where I did that camp on top of Southern England's highest. Any way, hope you're well. Mark

Hi Tony, it's great to see you back out there. Anthony is right about the similarities between the Dragons Back and Chrome Hill. I finally got to go up Great Gable last Wednesday during an otherwise rainy but lovely stay in Seathwaite. All the best. Damien

Thank you Damien, I really need to check the Peak District version,. Well done for doing Great Gable. I was planning to do that last Feb, but had to cancel due to COVID. I bet the views were awesome and weren’t spoiled by the rain. Seathwaite is a great place to stay and use as a base for hiking. 🥾🏕🏔

Fantastic to see you out on the Dragons Back and in the Black Mountains. I've enjoyed the mountains many times and was resonating with your joy just top be out there. Such a feeling of good energy and freedom. Waun Fach is the highest in the Black Mountain range. Pen Y Fan is central Brecon Beacons but the highest in Southern Britain. Whatever, fabulous views and great route. I did a camp on the Offa's Dyke route there if interested - on my channel a few videos back. Any way, good going. All the best. Mark

Thank you for your kind words, also for putting me right about the the difference between Waun Fach and Pen Y Fan, that's something I wasn't aware of. I will definitely check out your video of your camp on the Offa's Dyke path as we were discussing the limited spots that you could wild camp, so that will be really interesting to see how it went for you and where you pitched up. Have a great evening. ALB, Tony.

@@TFSOutdoors A pleasure to watch and comment. Yeah two different ranges there one in the East the other in the West. As for the camp you will be surprised as to where I pitched. Take care - I'll visit again. Mark

Were there many parking spaces at the lay by when you went?

To be fair, it wasn’t too bad, from memory I think it was a lay-by with enough for 4 or 5 cars. At the time we were the only ones there.
