A professor at the University of Miami School of Law wrote an Op-ed in the Boston Globe suggesting redoing the First and Second Amendments while explaining how these amendments should be written.
First, She claims that both amendments "Inspire religious-like fervor in many Americans and are "Deeply flawed in their respective conceptualization."
Of Course, the 2nd Amendment inspires religious-like fervor; we're talking about the ability to effectively defend your life, with the operative word being effective.
If there is anything that the American people should have religious-like fervor about, it's that.
She Goes on to say that, "These two amendments are highly susceptible to being read in isolation from the constitution as a whole and from its commitments to equality and the collective good and that the two amendments "Tend to be interpreted in aggressively individualistic ways that ignore the reality of conflict among competing rights".
She then says that the result of this is that, "The Most powerful members of society" benefit from these rights at the expense of vulnerable groups."
This is what she believes the Second Amendment should say:
All people have the right to bodily autonomy consistent with the right of other people to the same, including the right to defend themselves against unlawful force and the right of self-determination in reproductive matters. The government shall take reasonable measures to protect the health and safety of the public as a whole.
The only reason we have a right to bear arms in this country is because it is explicitly codified in our constitution.
Without the 2nd Amendment, there is no legal protection to our right to own firearms. She took out the word ARMs for this very reason.
She understands that without explicitly stating arms, there would be nothing to stop the government from banning guns outright, and that's what she wants.
The 2nd Amendment is a thorn in the side of anti-gunners.
They claim to respect the Second Amendment, but they don't.
They hate it because it protects the one thing they want to do away with, Guns in the hands of the people.
The Second Amendment doesn't protect guns it protects your right to keep and bear them.
Simply saying the People have the right to defend themselves against unlawful force means nothing if you don't have the means to exact an adequate form of defense.

There was an Austrian Holocaust survivor, Kitty Werthmann, who has given speeches on this exact issue. She points out how gun control measures were instituted the second the Nazis rolled into Austria. You'll never see anti-gunners bring up that point, especially not the "we need to be like Europe because they're so Progressive" types. Now we Americans may be due to repeat that history on our own soil.

Bingo, "Individual Liberty" is the preeminent objective of the Federal Government. The Framers made it clear that the 1st job of government was to be about the business of making sure that "Liberty" was protected for all people equally. There is no greater minority than the individual. A concept that does not register on any of the "think of the minorities" agenda driven racists that seek to institution their own authoritarianism.

@@nonyabusinessinc That is not dehumanizing. It is the state of reality in modern education. Just because you are improperly educated, does not mean you are less human. You are simply a human who shouldn't be expected to express a wise opinion by others. There are a lot of people like this alive today. Dehumanizing is taking away someone's right to medical treatment because you disagree with their politics.
Actually I've had the opportunity to work with quite a few young men through my job and they are far less brainwashed then people think. I think it comes from the natural human response to rebel against authority during our youth.

This is simply the cycle of power historically. Bad government exists, people revolt and free themselves, all is good for a while, things get bad and scary, people lose/give up their powers to new government who promises to protect them, and the cycle repeats. Its happened since before Rome, and the founding fathers, personal traits and flaws aside, were not idiots. They were well-read in history and politics, and had seen the rise and fall of several nations, while living through their own rebellions (Revolutionary War and, a little later, watching the French Revolution).
I wouldn't say peering into a crystal ball, so much as carrying a healthy grain of paranoia and misanthropy that humans generally suck as a whole, and bad people exist who are ready to force their will upon others with lack of remorse in the name of "the greater good."
If anyone says "for the greater good", they are either a tyrant or a cult leader, generally speaking. And the founding fathers understood this well.

She stated that the 2A is frequently taken out of context from the constitution as a whole, but then goes on to change the 2A to mean "The government shall do more things" in a constitution which is primarily about limiting the things that a government can do.

Also, anti gunners take the term “a well regulated militia” to mean the National Guard, yet the National Guard is a professionally trained force. The militias back then weren’t.

When the Second Amendment was written, the term "well-regulated" meant that a person was proficient in the use, maintenance and even repair of the person's firearm(s) and edged weapon(s). It didn't mean "buried under tyrannical rules, regulations, restrictions or laws." The People's right, not restricted to military formations.

A well-regulated militia consists of every able bodied man with a firearm who knows how to use it, maintain it, and is familiar with it's safety practices (such as not aiming it at anyone or anything unless intentionally about to fire it at whatever or whoever the target may be, check the chamber to ensure no love rounds in battery before cleaning, pointing, etc., Etc., otherwise, and said militia being THE people of each state in total fitting the bill of able bodied, and well-regulated meaning those who know the previously mentioned things pertaining to firearms and other weapons they may have for use in whatever applications. It's not the national guard, it's not some definitive and official organization by the compartmentalized labelling the small minded tend to relegate it to. Of course, on a side note to roll around in your noggin, we were never intended to have a standing military or get into the affairs of foreign nations according to the founding fathers either, and as time has trudged on it would seem corruption, greed, and powerhunger tainted such things or we would likely not be in the crappy position we're in, politically, or economically at present just to consider a couple of the multiplicative factors adopted by various presidents and those seeking to control the nation secretively through them over quite some time now having a rather stereotypical aim and agenda convoluting the path intended with all kinds of distraction, disinformation, and shady international deals with various governments and corporations (of which "The United States Of America" is just such a corporation though referred to as otherwise and as such is only considered to hold a position of any authority by de facto only, not de jour). It's not the 2nd amendment's fault that some folks can't benefit from it... It's the fault of the anti-gun fees/licenses and other restrictions on owning and carrying a firearm. Targeted taxes on firearms and ammunition increase the cost, sometimes out of the reach of those most likely to need it.

@Lone admin - My state (IL) charges for a permit to buy firearms and ammo (FOID card), it's 10$ (plus credit card surcharge, more on that later) every 5 or 10 years to renew, but it's still a pain. Then on top of that the CCW license is a completely separate process, which requires maintaining the FOID card... The delays alone are amazing to be allowed for a constitutional right. If voter registration or driver's licenses took over a year to renew like my FOID card did, heads would roll. I just got an email today saying I'm a member of a class action lawsuit for the credit card processing fee not being permitted in the legislation allowing the $ for the FOID card system. I doubt I'll see the extra 3$ returned that I paid, but the lawyers stand to make quite a bit of $ from the suit.

The Second Amendment, which by know we all know and love “A well regulated militia,
Being necessary for the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
Let’s break it down, as so many others before us have failed to do.
“A well regulated militia.”
Militia would be, but not be limited to, any able bodied individual of a competent fighting age. Not paid professional soldiers, not mercenaries. In an hour of great need, These would be civilians rising to the call or occasion. Typically found in the form of a unified defense of one’s community.
“A well regulated” would mean “A” meaning singular unit of 1. Henceforth, a group unified in solidarity, or singularity. “Well” meaning extensive or deep or versed. “Regulated” Meaning found regularly, common place, common practice, regulatory, to exercise control or supervision. To show restraint. Therefore we have a group, (traditionally made up of civilians) solidified in its endeavors, unified, well practiced and disciplined, capable of self restraint, that have been harangued to the point of needing to fight for survival, or to preserve themselves from being extinguished.
“Being necessary” means being vital to, or found as essential.
“For the security of a free state.” Meaning to maintain a safe place. To safeguard life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
“The Right” meaning ordained by the laws of God / gods and men.
“Of the people” meaning any and every citizen within the territory of the United States. People meaning the common folk. Meaning the civilians. Of the humans. Those that pay taxes.
“To keep and bear”
To have and to hold. To possess. To own. To take up. To burden oneself with.
“Arms”
Appendages, extensions, used in the accomplishment of task. Used for working.
Operations of tools. Tools themselves.
“Shall not be infringed.”
Not encroachable. No tresspass. No entry. No tainting.
So when we put all that together, what’s that spell? Eureka!
It means that a free people must, if they wish to remain free, be willing to fight to protect themselves, their families, their communities and their way of life from those that would do them harm, enslave or kill them. Because, inevitably, that time will come. The oppressor will always come to seek and destroy. The Second Amendment is written instructions for insurance that whatever tools the civilians take up to defend themselves with in their time of need they are allowed to have and use. It’s an all encompassing sentence to insure that any and all implements are protected, because in the long run it’s the people utilizing the tools to remain alive and maintain freedom and cast off the shadow of their would be oppressor.
I always find it funny when anti 2A people say "well regulated" whenever they are confronted with shall not be infringed. Like no well regulated didn't mean to let the government regulate arms. Plus why would the founding fathers give power to the government after fighting a war against a tyrannical government?

In regards to your comment about the founders giving government power after fighting one is well... in a word 'ignorant'. The "founders" gave nothing power. They only wrote the documents... the "States" gave the power to the government. Additionally, the constitution only applied to the federal government in the beginning and not the states originally. So per the Constitution... the states could take your guns in the beginning and the states DID take them along with some sheriffs, towns, and counties. The Constitution was to expressly prevent the Federal Government from taking weapons rights of the States away by directly forbidding the Federal Government from being able to regulate weapons of any kind "period" at any level. It is sad that American citizens know nothing of their own history and founding of this nation. While I don't expect everyone to know every little thing... there is a fundamental amount of unhealthy ignorance that prevails in the USA today.

Oddly enough, in Warren v. District of Columbia (1981), the Supreme Court ruled that the government and law enforcement, under the “public duty doctrine” says "the duty to provide public services is owed to the public at large” and not the individual citizen. In other words, you cannot sue the government for failing to protect you as an individual because that is not their problem. It is up to you to protect yourself.

Saw this yesterday and so I went and looked up the process of changing an amendment.
Needless to say, there's absolutely zero chance that the 2nd Amendment (or *any* amendment) will ever be amended. There are so many barriers in the way of conducting such an action that it is nigh impossible to make something like this happen.
