Because they can write both music and lyrics and the songs take you on a journey..... Also it's funny, you always mention Simon when to me, as good as Simon and the others are, it's John on the Bass for me. Him and ROger on the drums really push the song forward!
I think you'd also enjoy the group 'Japan', from the same era. Try listening to The Quiet Life, Nightporter, Gentlemen Take Polaroids etc. A great band sadly overlooked.
