I’m 46 and just started playing within the past year. I’m a high school teacher and was asked to “sponsor” (i.e. supervise) a game club at our school. The students taught me how to play MTG and I’m hooked!

My son is part of Evan's playgroup and I absolutely loved this video. My favorite part: Evan "We have a spike in the playgroup. All he wants to do is win." I'm 99% certain that he's talking about my son. LMFAO, because it is so true. My only disappointment was that there was not nearly enough screen time for his sweet dog Mindy.

When you are winning, know when to let a player live. Sometimes finishing off the weakened player is a worse tactic than addressing the player(s) that still have a decent position.
I recently taught my friend to play and really the best advice if you're trying to teach someone is to play more. The more you play, the more they'll learn.
As a new player to both Magic in general and also to commander as a format, I can say that Command Zone and Game Knights have played a HUGE role in getting me more and more interested in the format. The way that you guys present information appeals to a wide variety of people with a wide range of skill levels, probably even more than you guys realize. I spent all winter and most of the spring watching and re-watching every episode of Game Knights and Extra Turns so hopefully when I am able to get back to my LGS to play, I can feel more like I "belong" at the table with the more experienced players.
Way to go, and way to pay it forward. Taking your success and doing something so good with it! You’ve given the young man a good memory he can draw from to help him get through tough times in the future.
Thank you so much for supporting someone experiencing something so terrible, that they have to live with. The fact Evan is having so much fun makes my heart melt. Just, wow. Jimmy, Josh, Ashlin, Mark, Card Kingdom And Ultra Pro, And the the rest of the command zone crew, thank you, for making someone’s wish come true. Also, this video will really help me, as I have only been playing for 8 months, preparing to watch!
I had two friends. 1 who played magic for years, and 2. Who was just getting into it. Player 1 took player 2 through a literal class. I'm talking 2 hours explaining turn phases, and that was only the beginning. Surprisingly, friend 2 still plays magic
See, some people just like post time codes in the comments to where the “actual topic” starts cause they don’t want to hear you talk about your sponsors again. Personally I don’t mind, and this episode more than anything reinforces that. If you didn’t have all these sponsors you would never have been able to do all of this for Evan. I’m really glad everything worked out and I know none of it would be possible without amazing sponsors like these. That’s why I can listen to shoutouts to cardkingdom and ultrapro every episode and not feel tempted to look for a timecode in the comments.

I made the mistake of showing Aetherflux reservoir to new players, now our games overextend because there is always someone running lifegain. Lifegain and laser beam decks.
evan was articulate and concise in his analysis of new to the format topic. this episode was so good and hit home with me. I too started magic with paper during the origins block and made elfs as my first deck. I also liked his take on introducing people to magic. I used to use my elfs for new player teaching. what I like to do now is play a muli-player 60 card game and let them use my naya dinosaur deck as it is powerful and simple. since it almost always wins it also make their first game "fun" as they smash everyones deck with it. this gives the added benefit of introducing them to muli-player their very first time, since my ultimate goal is to get more players in our meta for commander (sneaky).
I love this community, it's so accepting and welcoming to newbies and old salts alike. So much positivity in the comments section. You all amaze me and I'm happy to be among you all.
I had a really nice double-benefit political move the other day. This was early game and I kept a shady hand, two lands and a 3-drop mana rock. So I had 3 turns to draw a land and I'm good, but I didn't. I did have a Karametra's Favor though, and my opponent had a Fertilid. I proposed, I'll ramp you by enchanting your Fertilid if you give me a land. He took it, he was able to do a better play with the extra mana, and I was able to get back on track. Politics are awesome!
People might not believe me, but this last Friday, Evan came to our FNM playgroup and played some Commander with us. He was super fun and he did bring his Feather deck, but played with an Atraxa deck instead. He told us about himself and showed us this video and how he got to meet MaRo and how he got to be on The Command Zone and how excited he was to be knighted. All in all, super fun guy and our playgroup was super glad to meet him!
Less than two minutes in and I had my first pause to recompose. This, in my opinion, is an amazing use of the platform you guys built. Hope you have the chance to engage in many more positive actions. It may be two days for this lad, but might change his and many other lives.
Thanks to Make-A-Wish my nephew got to meet the crew of the Simpsons about two decades ago. They really made him feel like a rock-star and I hope good things come to you guys in return.
I also ran an MTG club in my high school, and something that was really helpful was teaching two new players at the same time and having them play a game against each other and learn by asking questions as they go
The first two minutes in, haven't watched anything else, and I already have a huge smile and a nice warm fuzzy feeling!! Thanks guys!! You are the best! :)
I'm not gonna lie, when I saw Evan and heard his story, I thought the sentiment was beautiful and the idea was awesome. That said, I was nervous to continue on, because he's not an established personality, and if I was in his position I would likely choke up/not contribute very much. I'm very pleased to admit that I was 100% incorrect. Not only did he bring up some great points, he brought a good amount of "insider info" to the discussion, and was a joy to listen to. It's all well and good to claim he's a strong individual given his disease, but that's unfair to him. He's a strong, intelligent kid regardless of his condition, I hope he and his friends continue to kick some ass in commander, and that he eventually is able to do something with the passion and talent he has for the game. A+ episode guys, thanks for the discussion.
Already tearing up 2 minutes in, damn life is crazy I'm just so happy that MTG has that special 'magic' to bring us all together, hopefully for the greater good.

Great video! Warms my heart that the Command Zone staff became involved with Make a Wish. It’s a great organization. My little brother was a Make a Wish kid after his leukemia diagnosis in the 90’s. You guys are killing it! Keep at it Evan! You guys rule!
I really hope you are getting better. I myself don’t know of that kind of physical illness, but I know of mental illness. This really helped me getting better; your hope, fun and fantastic accent. Glad you got to have fun with these amazing people! Good luck in the future :D

Thank you Jimmy and Josh. you two are absolute inspirations and the fact you use your fame from magic to help others in need is absolutely amazing, powerful, and inspirational. Thank you so much.
Diplomacy is by FAR the most powerful and useful resource in a commander game. All my games inevitably devolve in some political drama, in the most game of thrones-ish fashion possible, and that is my favourite thing about this format. Actually I am the one who tries to extort and manipulate other players, even when that backfires I have a ton of fun.
I'm so glad to see this channel work with Make A Wish Foundation. You guys rock and are spreading a great message. This kid was able to enjoy a life changing event.
On one hand I feel sad for Evan's disability, but on the other I am a slighty jealous he got to play Magic with you guys! Keep up the great work and tons of prayers for Evan's future.
20:20 Another example would be Rashmi with elf tribal. Seems fine on paper: Elves make mana for counterspells, counterspells protect elves. But it falls apart as soon as you add non-mana tribal payoffs or go-wide finishers, because the counterspells prevent you from reaching critical creature mass and the go-wide cards take away space that you'd need for card draw to maintain the control strategy.
JLK and JDubbs hittin' home runs for the Commander community! We owe them our support for this effort. Truly, the cause could not be more admirable. Many relatable experiences expressed by Evan for any beginning Commander player. Godspeed to this young man. He's sharp as a knife, and twofold as wise. Good ambassadors create more good ambassadors, and it's in that spirit of growing our community that I salute Evan and The Command Zone!
Something I do when I play against newer players: Play Group Hug. Seriously, play group hug with them, let them see how their deck interacts in an accelerated state. For some people results are how they get enjoyment and my group hug deck is a Kruphix deck with nothing but Group draw and Group Ramp spells. Get everyone's mana out fast, give them 20 cards and see who explodes. If your friend explodes first they get to do what their deck was planning to do and hopefully win! If they get to do what their deck intended and they win quickly, that most of the time equates to a fun experience which effectively gets their foot in the door. Once that is done you help them tune and improve their decks and make them do that same thing without the need for your group hug deck helping them. Also a big fat No-No that I swear to god I have seen people do and that is play any of the following against new players: Infinite Loops (yes this includes infinite mana even if you cant do anything with it), Stax, Chaos and the worst offender, a CEDH deck. Someone actually thought if he made his friend watch him circlejerk his CEDH deck by turn 3-4 it would be fun for him. Its not fun for new magic players OR new EDH players to watch someone else have fun when they are barely learning. Avoid those deck styles with new players if you want them to have fun and actually enjoy the game with you.
This kid was the bomb and had very good advice. Super great that you guys could get together and be candid with Mark Rosewater too. This show continues to inspire me to get as many people playing magic as possible.
Huge props for working with Make a Wish! This is an organisation I’ve done work with in Australia and means a lot to me and my family. You guys are awesome. Seriously can’t say enough about this.
you guys honestly take my breath away. this is too good. i love this channel so much, you should all be proud because im speechless and love being a patreon to this incredible channel!!!!!
When our EDH-group was starting out, my brother & I made "Achievements" that rewarded humour /group-interaction /social elements. Each worth some points, a pool of budget cards to pick from equal to the number of players & most points gets first pick. Like you're saying about having your own personal objective, even coming in second means you're getting more choice at the end of the night.

I have a confession...
I couldn't even get to y'alls title sequence before I had to smash the Like button. Really love that you guys did this for him.
This was an amazing episode and it was awesome what you guys did for Evan. A real inspiration.
Absolutely phenomenal! What a fantastic thing to do, CZ. So happy for you, Evan!
big kudos, that's so sweet of y'all. those are some unforgetful memories, which surely changed that kid's life forever!
More evan! That guy was awesome, it's like hes done this a thousand times before, he was as collected as any of the other 3.
So awesome!! This is what I love to see about our community!
Awesome job to all for being part of this. We need more good people in the world.
You guys are amazing. Command zone and Mr Rosewater, that was fantastic. Good job.
that opening part made me so happy, glad this kid got too have a great time playing magic
Ah! You guys got me in the feels! Great content, even better coming from genuine good people. You guys rock!
Game Knights is my favorite
you guys honestly take my breath away. this is too good. i love this channel so much, you should all be proud because im speechless and love being a patreon to this incredible channel!!!!!
This is so cool! Another reason why I love the command zone!
That's a super cool idea! any way you could post your designs?
Soooo next Gamenights featuring Evan Moss?
D FROM NODE! WE NEED HIM ON THE SHOW. Great show btw guys you are all a blessing
This is great. Glad to see you guys helping to reach out. Great work!
