Dear new players, I started most of my decks from cards left over after drafts at local game stores. Most game stores hand out lands. All you need is a 99 cards and a legendary creature you like. Upgrade over time. Magic is a hobby, invest into it what you want out of it. (:

After my first draft some experienced players, that gave me tips for drafting before, just gave me their cards they drafted as a start to my collection. One started, others followed, I think I went out with over 200 cards. Next time the lgs just gave me 100 basic lands and I could get myself some of their bulk cards I wanted to use for my precon I bought.

I really appreciate this channel. I'm getting back into Magic after a 16 year hiatus and have been binge watching your Game Knights playlist. A whole lot has changed in sixteen years, and Commander has really appealed to me with the ability to play with cards that I remember as well as the new stuff as I learn it and become more comfortable.
My first deck that I've built is a mono green deck that is all about pumping out saproling tokens. I wanted to do a squirrel deck, but there just isn't really enough cards for that, so saprolings was the next best choice. The rest of the deck is mana ramp. My primary choice is... mana dorks (I think that's what the kids are calling them these days), but I've been hearing that the current meta is to avoid them, so I have an entire sideboard that is land hunting. I have no idea how competitive this deck is going to actually be, I know it's simple, but I've always loved putting a ton of tokens on the board, and I thought this would be a fun deck to learn the format on.
But I wanted to thank you guys for educating me on a game that i've missed and love, and I'm looking forward to diving back into the community.

      @KomradeKD 3 года назад

@@jacobjensen7704 I built the deck with Nemata, Grove Guardian in mind, But I also have a Verdeloth the Ancient in there that I could use, but I think Nemata is the stronger choice. I also have a Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury in the deck as well that I could use for throwing out a mana dork each turn, permanent control and card draw. But I think my mana ramp is going to be pretty fast as it is, so I don't think the extra dorks are worth giving up Nemata's non-tapping ability to crank out a saproling for 3. I really feel like Nemata is the strongest choice for critical massing

My playgroup all bought the same set of EDH staple proxies and each week we make a new deck using any of them we want and all of our cards. Since none of us play CEDH decks or combo the power levels are actually really even while still being able to play the fun splashy spells.

I'm new-ish but something me and my brother did that was fun was we spent 10 bucks on 1000 bulk cards and each proxyd a commander then used those random cards to build commander decks. We then spent like 5-7 bucks for basic lands. It wasnt very good, but it was a lot of fun, and a great cheap way to get into magic. We have since went on to upgrade those decks and play them against our friends precons.

the first commander precon or what ever I bought was this Dragon maze precon I think it was, it had Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts on the front. I don't think it was a commander deck, it was just this Dragon's maze box with 100 cards in it and Teysa was the face of it. So Orzhov was the first colour pairing I started with. I remember, me and my friends ordered one each I got the white and black, someone else ordered Red and green and so on.

My trick when deck building is to creat 4-8 categories, and try and pick the best 5-10 cards in each one. Each is part of the game plan, and I try to be conscious of the mana curve and what I need if ahead/behind.

One of the best deck building tips I’ve ever gotten is this. Go to edhrec, find the commander you’re interested in, click your theme and the expensive filter. Find a deck and write down all the cards under a dollar. Those cards will always be synergistic for the commander. Cheap cards played at the highest level.

My advice would be to just make sure you have a couple of win conditions in your deck. Nothing worse then loosing access to the one card you need to try take the win.

Anytime I feel the urge to build a new deck I'm always trying to find something new that I haven't done before. Unfortunately that's getting harder and harder the longer I play, but that also encourages me to try more and more obscure things. Two of my favorite decks that I've built in the last year are Morophon tribal samurai and Tishana tribal "Maro".

  • @Flickstro

For my money, one of the best "tools" I had while tuning my first precon deck was actually your video on deck basics; how much card draw, ramp, single target removal, board wipes etc. should go into a deck. I know it's a little old now, so it'd be super awesome if you could make an update to that video as a followup to this one (not to say you don't already have one in the works, because I have no clue lol).
Another sort of map for just whipping a deck together to playtest is the 8x8 method. I won't go into detail here, since it's easily found through google, but it's a nice way to ensure that your deck is playable without too much fussing over it. If the play style doesn't suit you, it's easy enough to take it apart and start again, or you can continue with and refine the deck over time as need be.

The commander and many of the cards have changed but it's still my favorite!
I started with Tarkir & there wasnt many Dwarves before Kaladesh & I've been hyped & waiting for Kaldheim since forever!

I can never understand why people say white is bad at ramping. After green, it is by far the *best* color at ramping, especially on a budget.

I think 2- or 3-color decks are most budget friendly. You're not limited to expensive options for things that one color isn't very good at, but you can still get away with playing lots of basic lands.

One thing that's interesting to note is wether you build your entire deck around your commander or just have the commander as a free card in hand. I ALWAYS build my decks around my commanders, it's high risk if it's killed, but high reward when combo off in 1 turn!

Precons! They are great for getting into the game and deckbuilding. You'll be able to play with the precon and get a solid feel for what its trying to do. then you don't have to try to build something from the ground up, use it as a skeleton of sorts, after you've played it a few times you'll be able to see that you can swap this card for that one, or switch up the mana base a little. It seems to me like a more relaxing way to slowly teach yourself what needs to go into a deck and what it needs to accomplish to do well.

  • @DarkandDeath4

First deck I ever built was Jund and by god it really was like a cheesecake factory menu! It was a crash and burn in every match, but through the laughs and the tears I had such a great time. I came out of it with an intimate idea of how the cards work together and how to better do what I want to do on the table. Even though I could've had an easier time playing magic with 1 or 2 color combos, I wouldn't trade it for the fun I had playing a 3 color deck as a newcomer.

  • @OvrlordEtna

Ghave was my first commander, slowly the deck has become more and more powerful as I learned and adjusted. As 70% timmy it now combos off if enough enchantments hit the field. I run about 30 Field enchantments.
