Grog, the dumbest person in the room, was the smartest one there. Only he respected Scanlan's choice when everyone else tried to convince him to stay, likely for the reasons Scanlan listed. The rest of them either tried to guilt him for wanting to walk away from adventuring to be a father or insulted his reasoning. Bless his heart Grog truly did see Scanlan as his best friend and only wanted him safe and happy. Shame the rest couldn't see it that way.
That's the thing about Grog, where as everyone else is logic and reasoning and whenever there are 2 conflicting reasons to do or not do something. Grog is emotion, do what feels right, and Scanlan knew what felt right for him, that was what matters
I think if Vax has been more open with his feelings, the situation could of happened on different terms. But in hindsight Scanlan leaving brought some changes to Vax and Vex and with their changes it affected Percy and Keyleth. Grog loves Pike and Scanlan so he only ever wants whats best for them, even if it means being seperated for a time.
1:14:50 Grog really melts my heart by being the only person to ask Scanlan about his mom. While everyone else gets angry, Grog admits he kinda failed his gnomish friend by not knowing
So good! And he's totally right... Vox machina didn't know him and none of them knew Kaylie. While it was a mistake for them to bring Kaylie to help him come back, it was the only way to bring him back. The party goes through all the possible methods of getting him back- 'stop lying to yourself', 'we went mad trying to bring you back', 'you're a bigger man than me', 'we're all terrible people' etc, and he has a response for them all. His only choice was to go and meet Kaylie for real and take care of her. Grog doesn't try to stop him, because Grog knew Scanlan the best. They spent the most time together, they laughed together, and they whored together... the "what was your mother's name" "juniper" broke my heart even more than that one.
@@petersenior5432 you're right there but I absolutely loved Pikes response when he tries to apologize which was that he was in the same boat as them when it comes to not knowing everything about them using the same question which was he didn't know Pikes mother and he[Sanlan] is in love with her
The conspiracy theory/ Irony to me would be that he did know her parent's name, but in the moment he wanted Pike to vent out everything she didn't get to when he left. Also for Ashley it was a pivotal moment in a story in which she wasn't there for, His death twice, and Scanlan awaking. If she was there, I don't think Scanlan leaves that way and perhaps sneaks out by leaving a letter to her and grog.
Sam Riegel is a superb actor. I am no expert but, anyone who can act, make you believe their character and feel the moment is good. Sam exemplifies this more than anyone else I have seen. Bravo sir.
Omg... Sam Riegal... You glorious bastard. This is one of the most amazing Critical Role edits I've seen so far. I love Scanlan. And shout out to Travis as Grog when he found out Scanlan was dead ( 54:32 ), he made me feel it. And he made me cry. I love this show SO much!
I love when they 'learn' that Kaylie is Scanlan's daughter, the players already know but the characters don't and their characters are played perfectly
I wish for more interactions between Pike and Kaylie. Just seeing the few in this vid make me want to see more with Scanlan there as well. It would just be pure magic
The question that will forever live in Critical Role infamy. Possibly one of the top three most likely CR quotes to elicit an emotional reaction in a fellow fan; the others (arguably) being "We're practically gods" and, inversely, "And every day that raven comes to visit".
And "Fix him", "I wish I could've done more", "It's called diabetes", "the type of man I want to marry someday", "Hey, guys… We’re friends, right?" "Worse, family". Loads of great quotes.
This feels like the 'Offer me money' moment in Princess Bride except inside out-- a character who carries a joke isn't funny anymore because the joke has teeth in it. So good.
This one was actually the fastest one I've done. There aren't that many Kaylie-Scanlan scenes and most of them were fresh on my mind - also there was so much already logged on the wikia. And, you know, I had to filter my emotions into something ;)
Honestly, more then scanlan's entire "who's my mother" speech, is when Percy absolutely FINISHED him when he came back, asking "what's her mother's name? ...it's Sibyll."
Eh. I thought it was childish. It felt like Percy was still trying to get one over on Scanlan. And that's just a dick move. I do believe Scanlan knew Sibil's name, he just want didn't want to play in Percy's game.
@@scarlightemperor3410 And good on him for that. Though it's moments like that, that make me be less favorable towards Percy. I love all of them. But it just puts him lower.
@@Hudson_Melpomene He was a bit of a dick back then. He seems to have gotten over that part of his personality. I met him a couple times at conventions back in the day during LARPs, and he was a real prima donna, but I think he's gotten over himself.

I’m sorry but every time I watch Scanlan leave it always annoys me that Vex tells him to be with his daughter and then when he listens to her she acts like she’s been betrayed
I hate how everyone keeps arguing the wrong points to get him to stay and then are sad when he leaves. Vax: You have contributed before (doesn't mean he's not out of his league now) Vex: You should be a better dad (great, so he's leaving) Percy: You're both shitty people (Yes, but she's his shitty person) Keyleth: idek but it wasn't "stay with us"
I thought the same thing when I watched it. Vax/Keyleth didn't actually hear what Scanlan was saying. They just kept trying to make it about themselves when this had nothing to do with them at all and that really irked me.
Something even worse about when Scanlan left was that they invaded his privacy yet again by scrying on him multiple times, they shouted and harassed him for leaving then spy on him after he leaves not giving him any time truly alone.
I'm still thinking about it. Not quite sure how to get all of that into a smaller, concise "main plot"-version, though. Maybe I'll do just the dragon parts, without the "how they got the vestiges" parts? But even editing those dragon fights down is going to be tough ... so, short answer: maybe?
That would depend on whether or not the players can separate what they know from what their characters know, which the critical role cast has proven they are capable of time and time again.
He froze to death.... in a lava cave. Only Scanlan.
“She’s got holes in all the right places” -Scanlan introducing his daughter to her future stepmother

Scanlan's character development was so organic, if this wasn't dnd I would consider his character to be brilliantly written.
1:14:50 Grog really melts my heart by being the only person to ask Scanlan about his mom. While everyone else gets angry, Grog admits he kinda failed his gnomish friend by not knowing

"...Yeah"
(Sounds of hearts breaking)

Great performance from Travis as Grog when he saw Scanlan body being carried by Vax. At the time I really felt that pain through his eyes.
I love when scanlan is talking to Kaylie after finding out she's his daughter, Travis is nodding his head the whole time like "yes. Say that."
"A holy woman?"
"......she's got holes in all the right places"
me: _quadruple facepalm_ DUUUUUUUUUDE! DDDDDDDDDDDUUUUUUUUUUDE! WTF!!!!!
By far the best interaction I’ve heard from Sam Reigal. In second was the “we’re gods” and third was the jug of Mayonnaise
5:31 oh thank the GODS Scanlan chose to lose, or that would have been a REALLY werid luke/leia-type kiss
Hopefully Matt would've had her kiss his cheek
More like a Vader and Leiya technically
@@Laantin shut the fuck up, technically.
I always imagined her doing something cheeky like kissing his hand or cheek, since he never specified where
Grog is the last one realising it at 12:51, while everyone else is already trying hard to keep it together :D
heh deffinetly Grog
"don't you die" "i promise" *insta dies to the next dragon*
Pretty sure it was 3 dragons later but yeah

20:50 i just LOVE Scanlan’s “I’m still super disgusted by my own actions” moment.
Really though, “fix him” broke me. I was inconsolable.
This was a great performance. Brought me to tears during Scanlan's final conversation with his friends.
“What’s my mother’s name” hit me so fucking hard jesus christ the visceral rage and just pure emotion in sam was so genuine and painstaking holy fuck
1:03:50 Liam's 'these are manly tears' face gets me everytime!

"Less fecal sort of scrying."
See, this is why I love D&D right there.
So thats why he has an emmy....
You can see Grog go through the stages of grief in an instant when he sees Scanlan's body.
44:10 He called it. Wow.
Aldermeer
The strength of being able to look back on every interaction with certain characters. Beautiful.
Oh god, just that first bit of watching Scanlan flirt unknowingly with his daughter, jeeeeeesus awkward christ XD
The look of realization on Travis' face at 12:50 is the best thing I have ever seen
The powerful emotions you conjure with your voice acting and theatrics have made these characters REAL! Vox Machina has taken a life of its own.
The reveal at 0:12:00 and the expressions on the players' faces as it clicks, it's just priceless.

This must have taken some time to put together, fine work and thank you.

My god I love Travis, you can see the gears turning in his head trying to understand what’s going on.
I sincerely hope Kaylie Shorthalt shows up at some point in Campaign Two.
15:37 to be fair Scanlan had no idea she was his kid when he tried to do the dance of 20 toes
52:32 one of the best moments lol
Huzzah! a masterpiece of storytelling an improv . best episode ever.
Matt and Sam pulls out real good rp through the end.
"I am sorry I didn't know that..." I broke at that moment.

Holy shit this show is amazing
Thank you so much for all your hard work here
Thanks! I'm thinking of doing another one - it's a great reason to rewatch some episodes.
Cool, I look forwards to it! :) Any hint as to the topic of your next video will be?
total tearjerker, first time seeing that scene. Completely predicted Grog would ask his mother's name.

Thank you so much for this. I started in season 2 and was saddened by the story I missed. What a beautiful story this is.
Watching this after episode 114... oh man...
I don't even watch this show (only these videos) and I'm crying
Travis slow realization of the situation was the best
"Daddy issues? That's hot."
When the cast is actually sad for their own characters...
This was spectacular.
I love everybody reaction when kayliee reveled she was scanlan’s daughter
This is my favorite 100 minutes from campaign 1 without any doubt
the delivery of the "No-ho" at 10:23 is fucking perfection.
I’m sorry but every time I watch Scanlan leave it always annoys me that Vex tells him to be with his daughter and then when he listens to her she acts like she’s been betrayed
This made me cry.
Just watched the whole video, for the record I haven't watched any of season 1, so my reaction to all this is:

"You can only imagine the blurred romantic tunnel vision" nice detail there matt
*Dueling flutes* "We gotta go."
I mean, considering how much he got around it’s shocking it didn’t happen more often
i fucking love these guys
would kill to play with these guys and have never played dnd before
11:48 Is when Matt makes the reveal and the gang figures it out
well this was an epic teal
I am still dying over the facial journey everyone had as they realized Matt intentionally set scanlan up to romance his own daughter
Did you know that you're a god among men?
I love Marisha facial expressions while listening to Sam at 16:49 😂
“I haven’t been to a whore house in MONTHS! That’s a big step for me!”
Just saw the trailer for the animated show's second season and thinking about what from all of this will make the cut?
Shit man just Scanlan accidentally repeating history and doing to his daughter what his father did to him
This feels so different.
so whos going to tell kaylie that scandalans dead
Is that Jethro Tull music added during the flute duel?
12:37 personal timestamp
I just LOOOOVE their interaction. Scanlan may be a little too apologetic, but yeah... Character development tho
yo this got TOOOOO real
Dammit! why does it keep raining in my room!
These are cool ive wanted to get into critical role but these are a great way to sell people on the show
will you be uploading the chroma conclave arc? if not thats ok
i understand it could take a long time to do so i understand if you dont want too

This is sad
Can anyone tell me which episodes are these from?
The angst
Im fucking sobbing. Jesus christ
Omg Scanlan is based off Eminem, Scanlans daughter is named Kaylie, Ems is Hailey. It was right in front of everyone the whole time!
Wait, is Sam still apart of critical role?
CozierElf0 yes
I kinda think that this would've been served better by having all of the crew leave so that the reveal could be made in secret.

That whole purse thing, 2600GP does not fit in one purse mate, he could have given her one of the like 8 purses it was in...
