Got a 10 last race, because he did a one stop, which meant he lead the race briefly, ultimately he was slower than Ricciardo over every sector, and went from 6th to 8th.
@@dodgemf1Of course he was slower...he was on a one stop. Braindead take. Him dropping places is on the team strategy. He would've been ahead of Piastri on pace if he was on a 2 stop.
@dodgemF1 yes, that's what happens when you one stop vs two stop. You're slower on track, but you don't have to take a second pitstop and get stuck in traffic.
I think it speaks volumes that Tsunoda is 11th in the rankings and you guys are both pretty chill about it when last year most people would have had him 18th-20th. He has improved massively and set higher expectations this year
Verstappen’s average and the gap to 2nd is ridiculously good. Not a fan but his accomplishments this year are undeniable. Matt says we’ll likely never see a season like this again, I’m just worried that we will see it again next season 😂
Given he is 26, an age most drivers may have peaked in talent but are still refining a lot (Senna first title, Schumi and Hammy domination only started at 30). Unless he becomes addicted to crack cocaine or loses his fire for racing...yup, the best is still to be seen
I think it's almost impossible for it to be worse next season. Max will still bring his A game, but the reliability and versatility required of the RB20 to top this year will be one hell of a feat.
@@epicgamerchannel6230 dude won 19/22 races. He pretty much can only go down. I’m sure he’ll still be dominant, but Mercedes is rebuilding their car, McLaren is showing great development under the new rules, and Fernando *needs* a competitive season before his soul can finally rest. He’s lit a fire under everyone’s ass. Not to mention, Red Bull needs Checo to challenge Max, I really think if he doesn’t, they’ll replace him until someone does. Redbull doesn’t want to win, they want both their drivers to Dominate.
@@epicgamerchannel6230 reliability will be directly related to level of competition...this year rb did not have to run anything to maximum and even without upgrades, their car was miles ahead.
For next year, could you guys perhaps also rate the teams performances every race? I feel many drivers got really bad grades they didn't deserve just because they were driving for terrible teams.
I don’t think it’s necessary honestly. We know how shit or good teams are, by rating teams, it just adds more animosity. Even driver ratings i think are stupid, to open to personal opinion.
If the teams or cars aren’t separate from the ratings. Than the ratings are wrong and the drivers don’t get rated the correct way. Not to mention how biased the ratings became after a while.
The dominance of Max is shown by the fact that so many great drivers never said anything close to "We're going to win this weekend" and were not willing to go all out to race him for fear of that costing themselves a better finish with no real chance of staying ahead. The most feared radio message, "Max is behind you".
Yeah this and that RB19 being so vastly superior to all the other teams. Never broke down, never crashed, just one bad race in Singapore and it wasn't even that bad since he managed P5 towards the end lol. This year was like watching an F1 car in a field of F2's😂
@@LOVE-VIBES-X-PROJECT-CARSnot when you’ve taken account for Perez. It’s not always going ur way, so it still says a lot about max. F1 drivers kept saying they will challenge Perez. So yeah they had the best car but, max has really shown us the difference.
@@LOVE-VIBES-X-PROJECT-CARS There were very very few mechanical failures in general this year. RB wasn't vastly better at that than other teams, if any. Max even had a drive shaft issue which cost him qualifying and likely a race win early in the season.
people saying yuki is overrated fail to recognise that he had three different teammates this year and managed all three well imo, knowing he had to outperform all of them - he’s had his bad luck, bad strategy and occasional mistake like mexico, but he’s improved greatly this season and stepped up big time. y’all just bitter he didn’t get stepped over like you thought he would be
I think Yuki has lots of top-tier grid quality potential in him, but i think he is slightly overrated this year because of him occasionally not having top-tier driver qualities in situations when he has the opportunity to shine and show his worth (for example: tactical/strategycal mindset, patience and ‘driving’ maturity). Don’t get me wrong though, i’m always rooting for my boy yuki when he has the opportunity to showcase his abilities and get some points in the A-Tauri. Sadly i have seen him not living up to my expectations in some situations, where I feel that most of the top-tier grid (at least 8. and beyond) would have made a difference with their driver qualities if they where in his car at those moments. I really hope Yuki can improve himself and develop these driver qualities, otherwise I won’t see him being able to be top-tier grid driver.
He was a full two points higher than second place in the averages. 9.7 to 7.7 That's wild when you think that second and 15th were separated by two points 7.7 to 5.7
I wonder why, The highest ranked drivers have the worst teammates apart from Charles and Lewis. So it makes max, lando and alonso look like every time they are extracting the most out of the car. Yes max was good but kick him out and put alonso, lewis or Charles.. they will sweep perez and win every race, especially Charles as the rb was better on Sunday which means he would have a higher starting position dude to his good quali
@@Allblue1 Alonso yes, Daddy's boy is terrible. Oscar is one of the most successful rookies we've seen in years and Sergio is a great veteran with a decorated career who had an off year. I wouldn't say max and land have slouches for teammates.
@@michaellawrence399 Dosen't matter if sergio had an off year. Put Alonso,Lewis or Charles in that situation max was in this yr and the results would be very similar. Yes piastri a rookie and one of the best we seen. But he still is far from what he is capable of still making lando look good.Records will be broken if it is made easy
Grateful for your content this year. Even as a Max fan, it was getting a little difficult there. Hoping Lando and Carlos/Charles get a better shot at it next year
Next year could you include a graphic of how many points the driver finished with and their finish in each race during the season and how you scored them each race? Its just nice to have the information upfront vs trying to recall the season swapping in between tabs.
Matt's rating are awful. George over Sainz. He was even surprised that they gave no 10s for Hamilton.. Even though he had on average the 3rd or 4th best car pushing for 2nd. Yet Lando got 6 10's in what was comfortably the 2nd best car since Austria. Lewis is right, he can't win. If he does well its.. "Well he's a 7 time champ so he should have won the race" and if he doesn't he gets criticism. Tommy's ratings are a bit better.
Yeah that's how it is nowadays, people like the narrative of "the very well known good driver is not as good as his reputation makes him out to be, and the underdog driver is actually legendary" kind of thing. Some driver can easily get a 10 for just a decent performance, while Hamilton will never get a 10 even when he did a godly performance. It also doesn't help that Hamilton has a really good teammate instead of daddy's money driver or a complete rookie as a benchmark. Recency bias made people forget that Russell is really good, he's dominated Norris and Albon in equal cars. If Hamilton has Stroll, Sargeant, or even Piastri as a teammate, he'll look absolutely goated. As inconsistent as Russell is this year, when he performs, he is among the top 4 on the grid just behind Verstappen, Hamilton, and Leclerc. It's relatively easy to trump teammates who is a paid driver or a rookie, it's impossible to do that when your teammate is one of the best on the grid.
Tommy is right, there has always been a dominate team or driver (even for more than one season), disrespecting Max is disrespecting all the great drivers of the past, build a bridge and get over it! To me the outstanding drivers this season have been Oscar (National Bias), he has shined in his rookie year. Norris, he is the way forward for McLaren but now with Oscar there, both have great potential. Alex, getting that Williams into points was through his skills behind the wheel. And finally Carlos, looking back over that win and how he strategically used Norris to fend off the Mercedes Bros, that is the mind of a tactician (HE should be on the wall instead of the Ferrari Engineers).
Albono Fan here. I know this is a longshot, but I do dream that James Vowles will just magically be the light for Williams, and that the team will be back to championship form.. And hopefully, Alex would stay in Williams to be the man.
Not really, I regard 1988 when McLaren lost a race only due to a driver mistake by Senna and 2016 when Mercedes also lost 2 races due to driving mistakes + 1 engine failure on Hamilton's car, as being more dominant. The gap to the rest of the teams was also bigger in terms of performance than this year. Sure Max had a great car this year, team performed amazing but they lost one race on pure car performance while Max drove flawless, made 0 mistakes all season. It was dominance by a driver.
@@madalinbpopait’s worth noting that those weren’t cost cap years and red bull didn’t develop their car after the summer break pretty much at all. If you look at it from a cost to gap ratio red bull is ahead by 5 or 6 times
@@wolf-xf6hf the championship was quite balanced, a lot of people dont realise yet what Max actually achieved this year, one of the greatest if not the greatest from a driver in F1 history. Its surreal how a lot of people are trying to diminish his achievements, the guy had a perfect individual season, with 0 mistakes all year long, within a team that did its job flawlessly and drove a car which was great indeed but by plenty of metrics is not the most dominant car ever. I have seen plenty of season in which only 3,4 maybe 5 cars were finishing in the same lap as the winner, the Mercedes W11 used to beat the whole grid in qualy by 1 seconds every race with both drivers and then were running slower engine modes in races. I have seen the Merc W07 putting 4 seconds a lap with both drivers into the rest during races. Nah, this was an epic season by Max, pure dominance by one of the legends of F1 by now. Perez showed us that this RB19 was not an easy car to win with, sometimes it was even hard to put in on the podium.
Liam was amazing and i do wonder what he could do in that Williams, does Danny deserve the seat over him? It's moot I suppose he has it Danny so happy to see him back, I'll be interested to see how he gets on next year I do feel Nyck De Vries was little hard done by but ultimately he was the master of his own misfortune. Kmag I was blown away at quite how poor he was, I mean he's better than me obvs but relative to his team mate. Logie bear, I just don't know how i feel about him. I wanted all the rookies to do well but simultaneously he has cost Williams FOUR TIMES his salary in damage!! Zhou had some moments but he was pretty anonymous Bottas again some flashes, quite literally with his calendar, but again sad not to see him doing better. He's clearly donesies Oh man Lance... some weekends he looks someone killed his dog and then every now and again he has little flashes of speed but honestly if his Father didn't own the team he'd have been poopcanned so hard Huuuuuuulkenberrrrg - Some amazing qualifications but with his teammate doing so badly it's hard to tell how good he actually is Sergio.... oh man... c'mon dude. He's clearly seen his arse about the relationship with Max but he's allowed it to get into his own head Esteban: most retriements all season, lots of dumb errors. But also quick when he wants to be! YUKIIIIII master of outperforming the car! I absolutely loved watching him find his feet and run, be great to see the car treat him better of course Pierre is almost certainly annoyed with every single person in the Alpine garage George Russell was just a bit pants, I mean in the sense he's easily one of the 10 best drivers in the world but whilst he outqualified LH he didn't look as good in the races until the end of the season Oscar, I was a bit sore being a Danny fan when he yeeted my boy but honestly it was the right call, he didn't look like a rookie did he? CARLOS SAIIIINZ man I love it when he does well but he's another man who looks annoyed at his team, he did pretty well all told and the Singapore victory was great Alex, we all love a comeback and what a comeback he's had, drove the pants off that car Landooooo man he's the greatest driver to never win isn't he? So fast, so good! But so unlucky and so prone to occasionally let himself down :( Lewis, what a pity no victory again this year, I really hope something changes for him. He was the greatest of his generation and whilst the new greatest has arrived I still have the softest of spots for him. Terrible qualifying (relatively) and amazing race pace Charles whoops forgot to put him in first time my bad, amazing driver, great one lap speed. Shame he drives for Ferrari I'd love to see him win a World Championship. Watch if he does Matt would spend 12 months delirious with joy! Alonso! You can it turns out teach an old dog new tricks, he drove out the skin as he always does and watching him ribbing Lewis so he got a good race was hilarious Max... HOLY CRAP what a season, just WOW. Thank you for listening to my opinion in my official role as just some guy. And thank you again P1 for a great season you guys were amazing and I look forward to yet more content!
Nyck being 27 at the time was probably the biggest reason. Why would RB invest in a guy who's already set in his ways, when they can mold a 19-22 year old
@@jamespoole3531 Nyck wasn't in the Williams plan at all, they always wanted Logan Sargeant due to his nationality and commercial revenue they would received. He either have to choose between Alphatauri or Formula E. So I guess he is lucky to get the once in lifetime chance to be in formula 1 from Marko, even only for a short time.
As a Merc and Lewis fan, I can view it from a season / F1 as a whole standpoint and tip your hat to what Max has been able to accomplished this year. I hope Lewis and Fernando are given the cars to compete next year cause that would be amazing to see.
The thing with Nyck is that he was not a Red Bull driver and not a young talent either, with his experience they expected him to perform from the first race, wich he didn't.
Nyck brought that on himself with his statements. "I'll be faster than Yuki" "I'll bring a sense of maturity to AlphaTauri" "I don't want to be considered a rookie"
Thank you for being my podcast of the year! My Spotify wrapped informed of this fact and I can’t be more proud and joyous at it. You guys are amazing! Keep doing what you are doing! And just know you have a fan for life! ❤

I honestly think that Perez just got himself down due to a mental breakdown from so much pressure. Even on the end of the season he started getting better again. Hopefully next season he gets to the same level as before
RE: Alex Albon - Watch his recent interview on the High Performance podcast. He gets into talking about his headspace when he got the Red Bull drive and admits he wasn't ready. He goes into what he learned and how he feels different now mentally.
This was my first full season as an F1 fan and I enjoyed it so so so much. Max's dominance, heroics from rookies, the uncertainty of Vegas turning out to be the race of the year, Fernando defying age...I could go on and on. I'm really looking forward to catching up on some F1 history over the off-season. If anyone would like to suggest any documentaries etc I should watch, I'd be happy to hear them!
In recent years, 2020 was very dramatic. Covid shook up everything, new tracks and drivers having to sit out races due to testing positive. And there were a couple of top 10 all time most incredible moments in that season. 2021 was one of the most incredible seasons of all time, the title fight between Max and Lewis was unreal, regardless of how it ended. Super aggressive and tight racing almost every weekend. Drive to survive on Netflix is a bit of a meme, and they definitely stretch the realism with team radios and such, but it's fun entertainment. I'd suggest that, season 3 and 4, or just watch the race highlights from each race on the F1 RUclips channel. We are a bit spoiled with incredible racing over the past few years.
What a phenomenal point from Tommy. “If you’re a Hamilton fan or a Schumacher fan or whatever, you’re discrediting your favorite drivers cause they haven’t been able to do what Max has done in a dominant car”
I think nobody had a car that didnt have a single DNF during the whole season. I actually think there has been more dominant cars in the past...but reliability on that Red Bull this year was insane. Pointing that out isnt taking anything away from Max Verstappens incredible season...it just gives credit to Red Bull for providing him with the car you need to make this possible.
The car is only dominate in Max’s hands when Mercedes dominated it was a Mercedes domination both cars were unbeatable and Checo is easily as good as Bottas and even then Max was one of the few drivers that challenged the Mercedes juggernaut
How do you rate so poorly someone that was fighting for 2nd place until 2 races before the end against the most dominant car ever with what was the 4th or 3th car at best in a Mercedes. Hamilton was second only to Max in consistency, and by far the best at getting good results against the odds.
Yeah that's how it is nowadays, people like the narrative of "the very well known good driver is not as good as his reputation makes him out to be, and the underdog driver is actually legendary" kind of thing. I really hope Haas and Sauber can put up some competitive cars next year so that we can see how good or bad those four drivers (HUL, BOT, ZHO, MAG) actually are. Right now it just feels like they are all capped by their cars rather than their skills.
One thing I've learnt is that the cars characteristics & drivers subconscious style makes a huge difference. Perez & max were close when the car suited max & then upgrades made perez look like an f3 driver
Well Verstapen this year was alien amongst aliens :) Also kudos to Hamilton for winning "the best of the rest" (i.e. minus RB) crown, shows that consistency is so important in the long run, scoring in every but two GPs (and one of those was the DSQ in USA).
Yea arguable a underrated season, when alonso, max have a bad weekend there teammate having a worse one, when lewis was behind looked bad cause he has a decent teammate. Never in history has there been a more dominant car the worse number 2 and no competition. He never did it in 22 because of Charles. Lewis never in 2016,15,14 cause there was nico. Vettel never bc that was the most talented drivers on the grid.
@@Lanse1984He scored 4 (!) less wins than Rosberg did in his entire F1 career… One win off of Mika, 2 off Kimi. In. One. Year. That just sounds… Wrong.
@theglitch312 i mean, we should of all known what would happen if Max got a car as dominant as a Mercedes was. The guy managed 10 wins with a car nowhere near the front. He was the only driver consistently close to the Mercedes in a way inferior car.
Hamilton was clearly P2 in the season. Mercs had the third best car on average, but usually was 4-5th car on track and he still managed to get lots of podiums and almost won twice, only losing due to poor strategy of Mercs. The fact that neither gave a 10 to Ham in races like Hungary and Austin only shows you both treat him different. Max shouldnt have a 9.7 as well, thats too high. And Perez should have been in the top 5 worst for sure.
In the same race (forgot which one) where both Max and Lewis messed up in quali but ended up on the podium they gave Max a 10 and didn't give Lewis a 10 bc he "messed up in quali". It's their opinions of course but rationale is not consistent.
Max won 15 races last year, 19 this year. No one has ever done that in F1. My first thoughts are that this record will stand for a long long time if not 4 ever. But than this creepy thought comes up in the back of my mind saying: watch him win them all next year. I'm a happy fan to witness this lad in my lifetime. I'm almost 50 and watching F1 almost 40 years now and never ever thought I would witness this kinda insane dominance in F1 ever.
9:30 Definitely agree. I reckon if Haas don't make good progress, he will walk and PROBABLY go to Audi/Sauber as they really wanted him, according to rumours, for 2024.
Yuki didn't just hold his own against danny ric, he very much BEAT him lol. I love danny and im happy these 2 are teammates now but when are ppl gonna put some respect on yuki's name. He beat 3 different teammates and if any other driver did this they'd be getting praised, you can't just call Liam, Daniel, and Nyck unlucky, Yuki just straight up beat them lol
maybe next season do a blind season rating and then compare it with the average that you got to also see the recency bias as well possible trend upward/downward
In my opinion, I think Charles should finished a bit higher because part of his downfall/problem was poor race strategy by Ferrari (and a couple of DNFs) . I think, overall, he was better than Lewis.
Exactly what i was thinking,The thing is when charles makes a mistakes it is very well remembered but when hamilton makes a mistake it is easily forgotten, and interms of consistency apart from the 2 crashes leclerc had and the car issues he was far more consistent than hamilton,With hamilton getting knocked out in Q2 very often this year and mediocre quali performances while charles was doing decent in the first half(Ham was slightly better)but since suzuka when the car started suiting him a bit leclerc has been flawless or has very very minor mistakes
It is because ppl just have the default setting in their mind that if leclerc has even 1 crash he is inconsistent but ham isnt, this is why ham has been rated over leclerc

Here is my top 10 drivers for 2023. I posted this in a comment earlier this week. Top 10: Max, Lewis, Alonso, Alex, Sains, Lando, Charles, Gasley, Russell and Piastry. Good see there is a lot of similarities between your top 10 and mine. Well, all the same drivers at least. Lewis and Alonso, I would say are interchangeable for P2. What put Lando lower for me was Oscar's performance. Oscar kept up and even outperformed Lando at times.
suggestion: i would find it fun if you had someone else tallying everything up, and you guys just write down on the spot what you think the order will be, and then at some point in the video you discuss that -- not sure on the details/how that should look, this is just a rough thought on my mind, because like you guys it felt like some of the results were surprising to see. love seeing you guys doing your thing here on P1
To use American sport analogies: verstappen at this point is Tim Duncan, Pete Sampras, first dynasty Tom Brady. Total dominance without a ton of flair that does not get appreciated in the moment.
I think that you guys under ranked Sainz all year, I think he had an arguably better season then Leclerc. Especially with Matts rating, no way did Sainz have a worse season then Russel. Sainz was extremally consistent ( last race excluded )
Ahahahah have you watched the races this season ? Leclerc was miles better than him even with a car that was suiting much more on Sainz's driving style. Without all the times when Ferrari ruined Leclerc's races, H2H between then would have been 16-6 or 17-5 easily for Charles, i don't know how can people say that Sainz had a better season than Charles.
I really sorry for Checo, is a great driver, but no matter how bad the car suits him, he should delivered better. Hope for a better 2024 for Checo. He can do it
Hamilton P4? Oof. He's the top driver behind the two RedBulls. George ended up p8 with the same car and we know that George is a good driver. Alonso's podiums were clearly due to Aston smoking everyone over winter break. Hamilton had a dog of a car all season, I think if they ever give him a good car again, we'll find out this Mercedes was even worse than we thought. Lando did well, I think Hamilton and Lando did the best after Max. Alonso only did well when he clearly had a car that was clearly best of the rest. As for Max, this whole APPRECIATE HIM, feels overdone. At least Matt said he hoped he never sees it again lol.

I had to endure Max fans say Hamilton couldn't deliver without the best car and now I need to endure Max fans saying that the car isn't the only factor in a wining season. Man I hate the internet
My P1 goes to Matty for his hilarious and highly anticipated reactions to Charles Leclerc's drive to survive in 2023 and Tommy's ever present giggles in the background. Never watched it live but it is the fist thing I watch on RUclips after the race. Kudos boys for keeping this old bird entertained in the F1 season.
I still remember the time when Nyck de Vries was so terrible that Matt had to introduce the 0 in the rankings to quantify his disappointment in de Vries 🤣
Anyone here who still thinks Yuki isnt a good driver needs to reevaluate, Yuki, yes he still made mistakes in Mexico and Austria but he also got screwed by bad luck and strategy in many races, brake issues in Monaco, bad penalty in Spain, bad strategy in Netherlands and Abu Dhabi and a mechanical DNS and Perez crashed into him in Singapore, all of these races had potential to score points and he was terribly unlucky and is a fantastic driver deserving of his seat
A lot people are forgetting that yuki went from F4 to F3 to F2 to F1 without a break he only had 1 season in F3 and F2 In his first race he scored points, then had a rookie season with crashes , and rough performances he was very far from Pierre gasly in performance in 2021 but ended the season high on a P4 In 2022 he improved significantly with race pace and qualifying and was much closer to gasly but the car was so bad that it looked like it was slower by 0.7-1.3 sec and even though he improved a lot he still lacked consistency therefore his performance went under radar This year he improved again and most importantly he became consistent and delivered performance and we all know the rest Expecting more improvement from him in 2024
It's not that Yuki is bad, its that he's inconsistent. 3 years gone, alot of growth but still a POTENTIALLY strong driver. The benchmark for AT drivers is an RB seat & Yuki isn't there yet, neither is DR or Lawson yet
An interesting podcast discussion would be reviewing the potential impact that Piastri's move from Alpine to McLaren will have on future F2 Champions that are reserve drivers and not getting full time seats. Thinking Felipe and Theo as 2 drivers that are champions and don't have seats.
I have to say, I think you guys have the best and most BALANCED driver rankings on the F1 space because you are keeping RECEIPTS across the WHOLE season! I LOVE that you guys have done this on average across the ENTIRE season across ALL races... WELL DONE!!! I'm so proud of you two breaking away from WTF1 and doing it on your own. I look forward to ALL of your content. I follow so many F1 pages and you two are the BEST!!! Keeo crackin' on my dudees!!!
Thank you for being a beacon of content, laughs, and information throughout the whole season. Looking forward to 2024 and HOPEFULLY get some real racing for the championship!
I Love the passion you both show, which is like us F1 fans. I love P1 here on RUclips and on Twitch. WTF must be kicking themselves. As the saying goes, (If it ain't broke) Their loss is our gain. I'm so looking forward to next season with you two. The top 20 rankings are spot on and Max has had an unbelievable season and you can't help but admire what he's achieved, and that's coming from a Lewis fan. Just keep what you're doing because it's a winning format.
I'm very sad for DeVries. He had a banger race with Williams, but couldn't get a lot out of the AlphaTauri in '22. He did well under Mercedes wing and deserves a whole season in F1. I do think he is better than Sargeant.
How is Checo better than Bottas or Stroll for example? Your average doesn't work if you don't lower his score for his incredibly poor racecraft all season. Crashing into someone every other race (which would be forgivable if he was a rookie and he wasn't in the best car by miles) is not something a driver that is 13th best on the grid would do. Crashing every other race is something a driver in the bottom 4 or 3 of the grid does.
Ref #1. Im a massive Hamilfan, I'm one of the ones that is still bitter about Abu Dhabi, and I wish MV wasn't at the front... *but* if you dont rate Max's 2023 season as probably the best F1 season of all time, you are just lying to yourself. Big props to Max and I hope LH smashes you next year (im inhaling hopium/copium mix)
To me it feels like since the new regulations in 2022 and onwards, there hasn’t really been a standout backmarker it has just been the top 3 or 4 teams and the rest just midfield which is cool. I think people are slandering the new regs for worse racing which could be true when you mention the problem with porpoising but the first few laps at Abu Dhabi this year was so refreshing to see pretty much every car within a second.
i would have hamilton 2nd because he did also secure mercedes 2nd in the constructors basically by himself as george struggled. alonso did good but lewis was better all season
Not having listened the full podcast yet, but surprised that it is a 20th to 1st ranking, while there were 22 drivers competing in grand prixs this year, why isnt it 22nd to 1st?
I'm a HUGE Verstappen fan, and I hate that people are always trying to discredit his achievements this year. They are always saying "it's the car" but it's not JUST the car. You need to be able to drive it fast. And as we've all seen with Checo, it's not necessarily the easiest car to drive. I believe it's a great car and it was the fastest car on the grid. Checo did do well with it in the first few races, but once Max got really comfortable in the car, he showed how good it really was. Yes, the car is designed more for Max's driving style and likely why Checo was struggling with it. But Max's driving style and his absolute ridiculous consistency and he was basically driving that car nearly perfect every single lap of almost every race (lest Singapore, which he still finished 5th), he was just in a completely different league this year. The problem with the Max haters is they only look at how he was when he started and form their bias on the early years. His driving style and the many questionable tactics he's used in races against other drivers wasn't great. But since his 1st WDC, he's really changed how his approach is and you see he's definitely evolved from the "crash-stappen" era to being almost god-like with near perfect drives week after week this year. I feel like if you could erase the memories of his early F1 days, you would be able to appreciate how great of a driver he actually is now. Like the evolution really came in during the 2022 season. Just go back and watch the races when Ferrari were winning and fighting with Max, and then watch the races as he started to dominate. You can literally see how he changed that season. The Max of 2023 is not the same as the Max of 2021 or before. I just think with his confidence, consistency and skill is going to make Red Bull the best team until 2026 when everything gets reset once again. He's going to literally go out and blow everyone out of the water for the next few years. There's just no denying that he's going to go down as one of the greatest drivers in F1 history. If you believe he isn't, you are just being naïve.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that there was not a single race where team orders were given to Perez to give up the race lead this season. Last season, yes. But this season, I don't recall any.
@@fkez0510 There were actually a few races where Max had issues in qualifying but, yeah, Max was usually fast enough to recover on his own and Checo won his races outside the streak.
Either Matt hates Bottas or I don't know what's happening, but to say "Zhou needs to comprehensively beat Bottas" is an absolute joke. Sure, Bottas isn't a WC or even multiple WC caliber driver, but he could hold his own against Ham. This wasn't that long ago. Bottas is a solid driver, and there are only a few drivers on the grid who could beat him "comprehensively". If that's the level of bar to be on the F1 grid then at least 12 drivers should lose their seats. You can call me a Max hater, but all of the stats (win record, win percentage, consecutive wins, most podiums, most points scored in consecutive races, most points in a season, percentage points in a season, percentage of laps lead, wins from pole, etc) you named should have huge asterisks on them. Name me another year where 1 team has been far and clear better than the 2nd place, a season where the winner takes 25 points, a season with 22 races + 6 sprints, a season in an era where cars don't blow up that much. Basically, no driver in history has had a chance to do all of that. The only other year I can think of is 1988 where McLaren won all but 1 race, but Senna and Prost were much closer to each other than Max and Perez were, the winner got 9 points not 25, there were 16 races, not 22+6. So please tell me how Fangio, Ascari, Senna, Prost, Piquet, Clark, Shumi, Lauda, Ham, Stewart, or any other F1 legend who I can't remember right now could have done any of what Max did. But I can say that Piastri is better than Max since Piastri won a sprint race during his rookie season and Max didn't. No need to mention that when Max started there weren't any sprint races. "Max had 19 wins"- The first time the F1 season had 19 races was in 2005. Literally, 90%+ of F1 legends never had a chance to win 19 races in a season. Only Schumi, Alo, Ham, Seb, and Kimi (past and present F1 legends) have raced in an era where they could get 19 wins in 1 season. That's why the Singapore result makes me happy. At least 1 pointless record that Max didn't get (finish on a podium in every race during a season- only Schumi has done that in 2002).
I think a cool idea for next year is instead of using averages you should use a points system similar to f1 itself. Every race week you rate the drivers exactly how you do now but the top 10 get the same amount of points as they would for the race for the positions in the ratings they come. This way it’s like a mini championship and id like to think it’d break up the similarities towards the back end of the grid for the end of the year. If it doesn’t work out you could still use averages but it’d be cool to see a p1 ratings championship throughout the year
I know it maybe an unpopular opinion, but as a Max fan it was one of my most amazing seasons so far. Of course I like competition like in '21, but seeing your favorite breaking all those records and holding off competition (even his teammate) to such a distance, feels magical.
22: Nyck 21: Logan Sergeant 20: Kevin Magnussen 19: Zhou 18: Lance Stroll 17: Bottas 16: Nico Hulkenberg 15: Larson 14: Esteban Oxon 13: Sergio Perez 12: Daniel Riccardo 11: Pierre Gasly 10: Yuki Tsunoda 9: Oscar Piastei 8: Carlos Sainz Jr 7: Alex Albon 6 :George Russell 5: Charles Leclarc 4: Lando Norris 3: Fernando Alonso 2: Lewis Hamilton 1: Max Verstappen
Thanks for all the entertainment you two have given this year, it's been great fun watching Matt crumble in front of our eyes when Charlie Clark fails to deliver!
Verstappen's season could only be so great because of the extraordinary reliability of that car. I'm not discrediting his consistency and pace at all, he was unbelievable this year. But I think something should be said for the lack of mechanicals these last couple of years which the other greats all had to contend with in their dominant eras. I mean the fact that he was able to complete every single lap this year with no race ending mechanicals is equally a remarkable achievement by Red Bull.
I think that next year you guys should make season predictions like you do for races, then at the end of the year review your season predictions with double points, triple for crazy predictions. Might spice up that game a little as Matt may end up on top at the end of the last race, but may swing with the season review.
The interesting thing for me is that race-to-race, some of the ratings are shocking. But over a full season, the averages are really not that disagreeable.
Yuki finishing 11th on this ranking too is IRONIC
Got a 10 last race, because he did a one stop, which meant he lead the race briefly, ultimately he was slower than Ricciardo over every sector, and went from 6th to 8th.
@@dodgemf1 the strategy was clearly worse and he couldve finished p7. stop being delusional
@@dodgemf1Of course he was slower...he was on a one stop. Braindead take. Him dropping places is on the team strategy. He would've been ahead of Piastri on pace if he was on a 2 stop.
coincidental*
@dodgemF1 yes, that's what happens when you one stop vs two stop. You're slower on track, but you don't have to take a second pitstop and get stuck in traffic.
I think it speaks volumes that Tsunoda is 11th in the rankings and you guys are both pretty chill about it when last year most people would have had him 18th-20th. He has improved massively and set higher expectations this year
One of the most overrated drivers, recency bias shining.
Tsunoda is not deserving of 11th
@@dodgemf1he was the second driver in the second worst car of the year, of course he would be shit.
@@dodgemf1 how when hes been good all year
When he got handed the team leader role, and he got a better car, he delivered.
Lol, at the end of Abu Dhabi, Alex Jacques said something like: 19 wins is something we're likely never see again, orrrr he'll have 20 next year😂😂😂😂
@@epicgamerchannel6230 dude won 19/22 races.
Agreed. Try to rate cars I know the rating videos would be too long but maybe you could shorten it up a little and maybe speedrun it.
Fr, haas car was horrible and these drivers dont deserve to be on a 4 and 5…
I don’t think it’s necessary honestly. We know how shit or good teams are, by rating teams, it just adds more animosity. Even driver ratings i think are stupid, to open to personal opinion.
....with terrible strategies

He did pretty good in that AlphaTauri.
It is however very hard to judge...especially the first half of the season with De Vries as his teammate.

Tbh yuki got a bit exposed by Liam
BRILLIANT rookie season from Oscar. Super mature both on and off the track. Nothing but great things ahead. Lovely time to be a Papaya fan!
Definitely delivered on his promise! looking forward to seeing him race in the future
Halfway through the season I would have never thought this would happen. I can't wait for next year, hopefully Lando and Oscar can take it to Max.
people saying yuki is overrated fail to recognise that he had three different teammates this year and managed all three well imo, knowing he had to outperform all of them - he’s had his bad luck, bad strategy and occasional mistake like mexico, but he’s improved greatly this season and stepped up big time. y’all just bitter he didn’t get stepped over like you thought he would be
I think Yuki has lots of top-tier grid quality potential in him, but i think he is slightly overrated this year because of him occasionally not having top-tier driver qualities in situations when he has the opportunity to shine and show his worth (for example: tactical/strategycal mindset, patience and ‘driving’ maturity).
I'd say Tsunoda was reborn after Lawson and Ricciardo came into the game.
‘Cause the car improved massively at the beginning of the Asian triple header
In the days McLaren were awful, Yuki also had some good battles with Oscar too. Think that helped start his season with the right attitude.
He was trouncing de Vries before that, and ending consistently 10,11th

Well if ferrari have an oversteery car next year you can already count carlos out of being anywhere near leclerc,im interested in how mclaren will be
Next year could you include a graphic of how many points the driver finished with and their finish in each race during the season and how you scored them each race? Its just nice to have the information upfront vs trying to recall the season swapping in between tabs.
Matt's rating are awful. George over Sainz. He was even surprised that they gave no 10s for Hamilton.. Even though he had on average the 3rd or 4th best car pushing for 2nd. Yet Lando got 6 10's in what was comfortably the 2nd best car since Austria. Lewis is right, he can't win. If he does well its.. "Well he's a 7 time champ so he should have won the race" and if he doesn't he gets criticism. Tommy's ratings are a bit better.
Its ok its an opinion, he doesn’t claim to be a journalist. Emotions play a slight value
@@anurag15271 why i still watch.. but I can give my opinion on the matter..
I'd suggest making 2 ratings. Team and Driver. The consistency RB has shown this year I would say is the best team consistency/ car ever.
@madalinbpopa Max had one "mistake"! Remember when he busted his front wing coming out of the garage!?! Hahaha how absolutely absurd is that!

Logie bear, I just don't know how i feel about him. I wanted all the rookies to do well but simultaneously he has cost Williams FOUR TIMES his salary in damage!!
Zhou had some moments but he was pretty anonymous
Bottas again some flashes, quite literally with his calendar, but again sad not to see him doing better. He's clearly donesies
Oh man Lance... some weekends he looks someone killed his dog and then every now and again he has little flashes of speed but honestly if his Father didn't own the team he'd have been poopcanned so hard

Esteban: most retriements all season, lots of dumb errors. But also quick when he wants to be!
YUKIIIIII master of outperforming the car! I absolutely loved watching him find his feet and run, be great to see the car treat him better of course
Pierre is almost certainly annoyed with every single person in the Alpine garage
George Russell was just a bit pants, I mean in the sense he's easily one of the 10 best drivers in the world but whilst he outqualified LH he didn't look as good in the races until the end of the season
Oscar, I was a bit sore being a Danny fan when he yeeted my boy but honestly it was the right call, he didn't look like a rookie did he?
CARLOS SAIIIINZ man I love it when he does well but he's another man who looks annoyed at his team, he did pretty well all told and the Singapore victory was great
Alex, we all love a comeback and what a comeback he's had, drove the pants off that car
Landooooo man he's the greatest driver to never win isn't he? So fast, so good! But so unlucky and so prone to occasionally let himself down :(
Lewis, what a pity no victory again this year, I really hope something changes for him. He was the greatest of his generation and whilst the new greatest has arrived I still have the softest of spots for him. Terrible qualifying (relatively) and amazing race pace
Charles whoops forgot to put him in first time my bad, amazing driver, great one lap speed. Shame he drives for Ferrari I'd love to see him win a World Championship. Watch if he does Matt would spend 12 months delirious with joy!
Alonso! You can it turns out teach an old dog new tricks, he drove out the skin as he always does and watching him ribbing Lewis so he got a good race was hilarious

Should have stuck with Williams instead of going to AT because he thought he had a shot at RB
He overhyped himself up. That whole "I'm not a rookie" thing really worked against him
Nyck being 27 at the time was probably the biggest reason. Why would RB invest in a guy who's already set in his ways, when they can mold a 19-22 year old
@@jamespoole3531 Nyck wasn't in the Williams plan at all, they always wanted Logan Sargeant due to his nationality and commercial revenue they would received. I honestly think that Perez just got himself down due to a mental breakdown from so much pressure. Even on the end of the season he started getting better again. Hopefully next season he gets to the same level as before

For this year, Sainz yes, Oscar no.
And I agree on Leclerc.
You guys forgot to rate Paul De Vries...
I feel that no enough has been said about the reliability of the red bull. 22 races with two cars, no mechanical DNF'S.
The 1979 season is underrated but right now I don't know how you could watch it. The race highlights have been deleted.
We are a bit spoiled with incredible racing over the past few years.
if we do a team rating ferrari and haas 1-2 for excellent strategy and upgrades over the season respectively
Somehow Ferrari upped their game late in the season, which is rare for them.
Yet another 11th for Yuki, that's just mean
What a phenomenal point from Tommy. “If you’re a Hamilton fan or a Schumacher fan or whatever, you’re discrediting your favorite drivers cause they haven’t been able to do what Max has done in a dominant car”
Not at all. The RB is currently the perfect car. And the people who can challenge him Hamilton, Alonso, maybe even Lando are not in comparative cars.
And those arguing about reliability. Schumacher has a 100% podium rate in 2002 because of solid reliability
@@ItsDeffoScottDo you think that any car was competitive compared to Mercedes in 2014-20 ?

Having you guys has really helped all the late nights!
How do you rate so poorly someone that was fighting for 2nd place until 2 races before the end against the most dominant car ever with what was the 4th or 3th car at best in a Mercedes. Hamilton was second only to Max in consistency, and by far the best at getting good results against the odds.

I really hope Haas and Sauber can put up some competitive cars next year so that we can see how good or bad those four drivers (HUL, BOT, ZHO, MAG) actually are. Right now it just feels like they are all capped by their cars rather than their skills.
I’ve been focused on this 2 team battle the whole year. I feel all 4 drivers were restricted by their cars.
One thing I've learnt is that the cars characteristics & drivers subconscious style makes a huge difference. Perez & max were close when the car suited max & then upgrades made perez look like an f3 driver
Well Verstapen this year was alien amongst aliens :)
Also kudos to Hamilton for winning "the best of the rest" (i.e. minus RB) crown, shows that consistency is so important in the long run, scoring in every but two GPs (and one of those was the DSQ in USA).

The title of the video shoud have been "Driver Ranking, from worst to Max" ... It works on all levels :p
Poor Checo. I hope he gets his act together next year.
I reckon if Haas don't make good progress, he will walk and PROBABLY go to Audi/Sauber as they really wanted him, according to rumours, for 2024.

maybe next season do a blind season rating and then compare it with the average that you got to also see the recency bias as well possible trend upward/downward

@@vanbalzup6481 Do I really need to add /s after my comment?
Does seem like there is a bias that Hamilton isn’t getting everything and more out of the car vs other drivers
Yeah that's how it is nowadays, people like the narrative of "the very well known good driver is not as good as his reputation makes him out to be, and the underdog driver is actually legendary" kind of thing.
@@ihsanjayadi88True,but hamilton has not always dragged the best out of his car, like in abu dhabi or vegas and mercedes on average was fighting for 4th or 5th this season while ferrari was fighting for 6th or 5th so mercedes was the faster car yet drivers like leclerc wouldve probably been ahead if not for many issues with ferrari.Aging has caused hamiltons quali pace to be worse but interms of race pace he is still goated and one of the best.I hope he can get better interms of quali then he would be nearly as good as he was in his prime
its crazy that the Merc has never been a p2 car but Lewis beat all beside redbulls but these guys say p4 and p3 its crazy. but i still love this guys ❤
Of all records broken and stats achieved by Verstappen, I think one is often forgotten:
Verstappen scored enough points this season to win Constructors Championship on his own...
It's ridiculous.

Dont think he had a better season than leclerc.
He can do it
If there is a 2024 for him
Hamilton P4?
Perez being closer to De Vries than Verstappen in the standings is all you need to know about how bad his season was.

Wow , did you see the size and width of Piastri's neck on that picture at 17.56 min ? It's huge !
Never expected this .
A lot people are forgetting that yuki went from F4 to F3 to F2 to F1 without a break he only had 1 season in F3 and F2
In his first race he scored points, then had a rookie season with crashes , and rough performances he was very far from Pierre gasly in performance in 2021 but ended the season high on a P4
In 2022 he improved significantly with race pace and qualifying and was much closer to gasly but the car was so bad that it looked like it was slower by 0.7-1.3 sec and even though he improved a lot he still lacked consistency therefore his performance went under radar
This year he improved again and most importantly he became consistent and delivered performance and we all know the rest
Expecting more improvement from him in 2024
It's not that Yuki is bad, its that he's inconsistent. 3 years gone, alot of growth but still a POTENTIALLY strong driver. The benchmark for AT drivers is an RB seat & Yuki isn't there yet, neither is DR or Lawson yet

I'm very sad for DeVries. He had a banger race with Williams, but couldn't get a lot out of the AlphaTauri in '22. He did well under Mercedes wing and deserves a whole season in F1. I do think he is better than Sargeant.
Maybe sargeant needs to go back to F2 for a year or 2, and in the mean time williams get nyck to drive instead........hypothetical
He's got a decent chance at a Le Mans win & a WEC world championship next year, so it's not all bad
@@mohammadnashitsiddiqui2168 no not at all
How is Checo better than Bottas or Stroll for example? Your average doesn't work if you don't lower his score for his incredibly poor racecraft all season. Crashing into someone every other race (which would be forgivable if he was a rookie and he wasn't in the best car by miles) is not something a driver that is 13th best on the grid would do. Crashing every other race is something a driver in the bottom 4 or 3 of the grid does.

Hugely underrated season by Lewis imo
Probably because there was no title fight and Max was always ahead of Checo lmao
If it doesn’t work out you could still use averages but it’d be cool to see a p1 ratings championship throughout the year
With the score of 7.8 Liam Lawson would be P2 in Matts list. Not bad for a part-time rookie, not bad at all.
I know it maybe an unpopular opinion, but as a Max fan it was one of my most amazing seasons so far. Of course I like competition like in '21, but seeing your favorite breaking all those records and holding off competition (even his teammate) to such a distance, feels magical.

I can't help but think that Nyck would have done better than Logan in the Williams.
I would put perez between strol and zhou and hulkenberg a little hogher.
I think that next year you guys should make season predictions like you do for races, then at the end of the year review your season predictions with double points, triple for crazy predictions. Might spice up that game a little as Matt may end up on top at the end of the last race, but may swing with the season review.
Can you also do the Team ratings next season? It would be good to know how teams average over the entire season.
The interesting thing for me is that race-to-race, some of the ratings are shocking. But over a full season, the averages are really not that disagreeable.
