Randy Travis has a great song featuring Don Henley called ‘More Life’ that is wonderful & should make folks stop and think. The sad irony is within a cpl of months of performing it for the first time on his 25th Anniversary Special, Randy suffered a stroke. Believe me- I’ve played the song more than once to hubby to ground him!😏
Both of my parents were children of the Appalachia and grew up in the same area as Dolly. My Dad in particular was destitute. He had no indoor plumbing, no electricity, & a dirt floor my gmother would ‘sweep neat’ several times a day. When he was 5 my gparents walked him up to the school for his first day only to be turned away. They were told he had to have shoes to attend class. When he was 8 he returned; it took them 3 yrs to save for that pair of shoes😔 My gfather 2 years later took a govt job over in Oak Ridge to work as a laborer in Y12 @ The Manhattan Projection. There they lived in one of the many govt built homes. I know they were grateful but I also can’t imagine how scary that much change so quickly must have been for my gparents- running water, electricity, FLOORS! But they did it for my Dad. He went on to receive an Academic Scholarship for college/undergrad & later returned for his Masters & then PhD, flipping burgers and selling brushes door to door all while raising his own young family. He created both the Latin American & African American Cross Cultural Studies at the University where he taught for 30yrs and was a published author many times over. To this day the publisher McGraw-Hill awards one Educator the Outstanding Leadership Award named for Daddy every year. Not too shabby for the kid with no shoes. And all because many sacrifices by many people were made.
East Tennesseans are a sturdy lot!!!😊🥰

I think I read somewhere that she lost a child. Maybe she couldn’t have them or she couldn’t take the pain of another loss. She’s an awesome lady though. My good friends grandsons get books from her every month. It means the world to them.

Dolly had female health issues in the late 80’s. She was off the road for two years. Dolly was unable to have children of her own. But I’ve heard her say, “I couldn’t have kids of my own, but I feel all the children of the world are mine.” She’s done so much for children with The Imagination Library and donating millions to advance healthcare to those same kids. We love Dolly.

Dolly after leaving home & having a singing job. She helped her mom & dad. Many of her brothers & sisters lived with Dolly. In old interviews Dolly has said she helped raised her siblings. I remember Dolly having her female problems. She went into a deep depression to. I thought at one point she was going to quit singing. Glad that didn't happen.
