This may sound cold hearted but I decided a long time ago that my responsibility was to protect myself and my family. Just because I carry a weapon doesn't mean I'm in law enforcement...as you pointed out, many things can go sideways in a hurry!
So glad you said this! And I don't believe it's cold-hearted one bit. Not telling anyone else what to think or do, but it's called SELF defense for a reason. You have a right to self-defense... NOT a right to be a hero.
It's absolutely everyone's responsibility to protect themselves. We need to all remember this and stop apologizing for other people's possible discomfort. Just as I carry for bear protection, I also carry for protection from two-leggeds (humans). Never apologize for prioritizing your personal safety and well-being!

You do have the CHOICE not to intervene. Yes, we should make the judgment carefully if the situation is not obvious (active shooter).
Obviously it's your choice, and that's not a terrible starting place. I can't imagine sitting idly by while, say, a child is being knifed or beaten with a club. Gotta be a middle-ground somewhere.
In other words...don't get involved in something u don't know the situation. call the cops...or 911. and don't shoot unless u feel ur life is bein threatened. avoid situations at all cost. Again...call 911.
Don't try to be a hero, run away and be a good witness. Having a concealed carry permit DOESN'T make you a "junior cop".

Great video. I suggest that once you draw your weapon you need to be thinking in terms of being ready to give your life to the cause. If not then you probably should not draw your weapon.
The instructor at an active shooter class I took emphasized the necessity of mentally planning for a "what if" situation. "When it hits the fan, your body won't go where your mind hasn't been!" Another great video. Thank you!

Your active shooter instructor makes a good point. Anytime you’re able to visualize a situation you may be in ahead of time and how you will handle that situation can probably benefit you. You see Olympic athletes do it all the time right before they start they’re event.
We had a conceal carry person that ended up shot by law enforcement due to the fact that he actually shot the perpetrator but then picked up the gun that the bad guy had and police saw him with the the gun and thought he was the bad guy. This happened in Boulder, CO and they have since recognized that conceal carry guy as a hero. He saved lives and made one fatal mistake by picking up the perpetrators gun. He was an experienced carry person but that is what happens in those tense moments.

This is so horrible to hear. You put yourself in lethal danger when you let the police approach you with a gun or other deadly weapon in your hand. This was drilled into my head at every firearms training class I've ever taken.
Incidents than LEO constantly face, makes it Real Hard for them to make good judgment calls.
Exercising a RIGHT requires responsibility. I've seen far too many folks get their carry permit and don't bother to train, or even think about how to responsibly exercise that RIGHT. Thanks for spreading the word and talking about "mental maps" and situational planning.
Yeah, like the responsibility to ignore and fight tyranny (and by ignore, I mean disobey). Just sucks we've become a nation of cowards who would rather blame other people than take responsibility and fix our own shit and take control (and responsibility) for our own government. Yeah, WE are responsible for what our government does.
I would rather waste money shooting bullets, than not practicing while saving then become clueless during one of those situations where people freeze.
Wife and I have talked about the active shooter. Her job is to first get clear of me and get safe. Then call 911 report the incident and give a description of me, height, age, hair color, shirt color, and say that I am armed and attempting to stop the threat(s).
First aid. I’m already carrying more “stuff” than I want to. I suggest carrying and learning how to use a cravat / a triangular bandage. They are inexpensive and don’t take up much room. You can use it to bandage a wound, as a compression bandage, you can stuff it in a knife or bullet wound to slow bleeding, and you can use it as a field tourniquet. It would be to everyone’s advantage to take a good first aid class. Gun or not, everyone should carry a pocket knife - carry a knife save a life.

Just so you know, when police get any sort of description from dispatch, if the dispatcher even does their job at all, the cops file that information away in their brains as "description of the perp", they don't have room for anything else in their brains. The information they need to be given is the description of the bad guy. And if you don't want the cops to murder you, you need to be physically gone from the scene of the crime by the time they arrive. They shoot everybody in these things. Anyone that moves. Bad guys, good guys, random unarmed bystanders, victims of the bad guy who are already dead and lying motionless on the ground, and even their fellow cops. The forensics reports on these things will shock you. You need to deal with the immediate threat as quickly as you can, disengage and get away as soon as you hear the first siren, and then if you feel like making a report to the police, call up your lawyer, and go into the station together and let your lawyer do the talking.
We just had an "active shooter" incident ...
I was probably 70 yards from the "bad actor", but I did NOT have clear view of him through vehicles in the parking lot..
I was able to retreat to safety while calling L.E.A. and keeping an eye on the area he was advancing toward...
L.E.A. swarmed on scene within 2.5 minutes ... shooter took his own life, but unfortunately, took out 2 innocents prior to his demise.

Whether or not you possess a CCL, you may NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY to use your weapon.
DISTANCE, OBSTACLES, BACKGROUND and YOUR OWN SAFETY are all things to consider in the split second you have BEFORE you decide whether to "get in the fight"..
The most important thing I can tell folks is BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS!!!
don't have your nose buried so far in your cell phone that you can't see what is going on around you!!!
THERE IS NO TEXT OR PHONE CALL SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU MAY END UP A VICTIM!!!! wait till you're in a safe place to use your phone!!

Please talk about the importance of having some legal protection insurance if you carry a gun or if you decide to have weapons at home for self defense. Unfortunately good people end up in prison trying to protect their selves or their loved ones because they don’t know when and how use their weapons, and more important, how to proceed when the police show up. Good channel!!!
I was a nationally cert. legal assistant & worked for several law firms as a paralegal & an investigator (criminal defense & civil). I also had my own private service co. I was authorized access to the county jail to meet with clients. I always had access to a firearm but did not always carry one. Not that I felt safer but that I felt less likely to use it. Family Law was more dangerous than criminal defense. Serving divorce, child custody, or child support law suits bring out the worse in people. At those times I just reminded the person that I was an "officer" of the court & not to make matters worse. You must use good judgment if you plan to carry.
See.. this is why I love you. You remind us of things we normally wouldn’t think of.

Great video. My philosophy is when I’m doubt CALL 911! Let the authorities handle situations where you don’t know all of the facts, and be a good eyewitness. And never be afraid to back out /deescalate out of any situation! Remember just because you have a permit to carry a pistol doesn’t mean you a duty/authority to get involved! Use of deadly force should be always BE THE LAST RESORT!

I'd love to be the hero, but I have come to the realization that my carry is to get me and my love ones out of the situation asap. If a shooter starts shooting, I'm headed to the quickest concealed way out.
As an ex-LEO you bring up some very good points in this video. It is very important that in an active shooter situation police respond to any threat that is visible to them. As you mentioned, if you are involved in the active shooter situation the police will consider you the active shooter unless you make yourself known that you are not the perpetrator. One easy way is to lay down your weapon at your side or holster your weapon. Either way the responding officers will consider you a suspect until it is determined you are not. Always, always comply with the officers!
One item you forgot to mention in this video but may have brought up in other videos is the trauma you will experience if you have to shoot someone and possibly take their life. That is something to consider.
It’s all about mindset there will be trauma but best believe I won’t lose sleep for putting down a mass shooter

@@reecewatson5311 Cops never give anyone a chance to comply before they fire their weapons. You see it on body cams all the time. They shoot first, and then as they're continuing to shoot repeatedly they'll scream things like "stop, police!" Police stop active shooters some of the time, but very often it's ordinary peaceable concealed weapon carriers that deal with it before they arrive. When police do arrive, they will generally shoot good guys with guns, unarmed bystanders who may or may not have already been made victims of the active shooter, and even other cops. Cops have a really hard time with IFF, and they're all very eager to pull the trigger, so they don't take a moment to think first. Ordinary peaceable concealed weapon carriers know they will be in a lot of trouble if they make a mistake, so they hesitate to shoot, unless they are absolutely beyond any doubt pointing their weapon at a bad guy. They identify first, then point, then fire. Cops just fire, pointing somewhere in the direction of whatever scared them, and let the CSI guys identify after.
There's many cases of ordinary peaceable concealed weapon carriers responding to the same act of violence, all without knowing who each other are, and all of them independently identifying who the bad guy was, and never shot any of the good guys. That sort of thing happens a lot, but generally doesn't make more than the local news. But of course if good guys with guns were killing each other at these things, it would be international news and everyone would know about it and talk about it decades after every time gun grabbers want to pass a new law. And cops accidentally shooting the wrong people at these things is always buried deep. But if you dig into the medical examiner reports, you can find out just where all the cop bullets went, and they go all over the place. Into random bystanders, into other cops, into victims already lying dead from the active shooter, whatever they happened to be pointing their gun at when they unloaded the magazine in a blind panic. It's really quite shameful.
I have watched many video of real life events involving shooters which were later analyzed. I decided after watching these videos that I will not be involved in an active shooter. My desire to carry a firearm is for the safety of myself and my family. Thats it. There are too many legal ramifications when deciding to use your firearm and only my family is worth the legal consequences. Even if innocent you may still need a lawyer.
The one with the gun isn’t always the bad guy! Could be an undercover cop or the victim🧐 Thanks for passing on your knowledge.
YOUR weapon is to defend YOU. You are NOT there to defend others (non-family).
IF it turns out to be an undercover LEO, AND they threaten you with their gun, ALL BETS ARE OFF!

Another thing to consider is how loud a shot will be without hearing protection. Prepare to not be able to hear anything if God forbid any of us are put into one of those scenarios. I’m not really even sure how to train for that. I’ve literally never shot a gun without something protecting my ears.
There is a good likelihood that because of the stress of the situation you may not really even hear your shots being fired. It’s referred to as auditory exclusion and could very likely happen along with other involuntary actions such as tunnel vision
As part of training you should fire with no hearing at lease once so you at least know how it will affect you.
Excellent point! If someone has to fire their gun while inside their car, to prevent being carjacked or kidnapped for instance, then the discharge is even louder, and would definitely deafen them at least temporarily, if not permanently. That's another reason to make sure your gun is put away safely before first responders arrive, they will be shouting instructions that you can't hear!

The same goes for experiencing a night muzzle flash. I was trained never rack a gun. It gives up your location & delays response time.

Some very good points to think about. My main purpose of CC is to protect myself and who ever is with me. Trying to defuse a situation can be complex.

Hi very good vid .im a new Ltc in mass also and i havent carried yet until i get some type of insurance for legal protection .keep up the good work.
It’s good that you try to get folks to think a bit. After 28 years as a cop and a being in a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo for a yr and a half then going to Iraq when it was hot, most people have no clue what can happen. Defending your life in a split second action is a reaction, if prepared. Don’t fear it, assess it very quickly and defend yourself without hesitation.

Great video! My only advice that I think you forgot to mention is the importance of having a Carry Insurance plan and training. Defensive shooting cases are very expensive even if you were justified. As for training, you have to stay competent on your weapon. Know your limits, malfunction course of actions, etc. Other than that great job.
Great video! I would add that having a less-than-lethal option when carrying is a really good idea. Maybe you can get involved without having to make a lethal choice.

Agreed! I try to carry pepper spay so that I don't have to use deadly force to solve every problem. while Its not always a viable option, there are many times it is.
@@whyguygin Anytime you’re forced to lay hands on somebody there’s always a chance you will become injured yourself so I found pepper spray to be a good option
Very good points, I started thinking of situations a couple of years ago and it has helped so much to be aware now of what is going on around me. Hubby and I have been watching you since the beginning. Can you do a video on a what to do if someone tries breaking in your house?
We have a home drill in a 2 adult household. July 2021 we had a home invasion. What we didn’t know was we had accidentally trapped the individual inside our house. We had been landscaping & had multiple doors unlocked. He left 10 minutes after we went lights out later that night. I can’t even begin to share the terror we felt.

Even the police mistake good guys/girls for the suspect. Good example is John Hurley in Arvada, Colorado who shot a active shooter who just murdered a police officer. Responding officer thought Mr. Hurley was the suspect and shot and killed him. Carrying a firearm is a huge responsibility and a risk. Train, train and train some more.
I’ve been carrying a gun for 20 years and military trained. I think the only time I would ever get involved is if I saw a child being hurt, there is no context there is no good or bad, a child will never be hurt in my presence!!

My cousin in England was murdered after he tried to break up two cousins who were fighting. It was Christmas and as he said ,” come on lads, it’s Christmas,” they turned on him and he was beaten and stabbed to death. Nobody was arrested as it was a close knit community and they closed ranks on the Outsider who was interfering.

Some very good points made here, and I hope the ladies will take your advice! On that first point, when you're involved in a shooting incident: *Don't have a gun in your hand when the police arrive!* Guys who carry usually use a holster, mostly in-the-waistband (IWB) for concealment, but sometimes outside the waistband (OWB), so it's fairly easy for them to re-holster their weapon (though they too need to think about this, and train to put the gun away after the threat has passed.)
For gals it may be a lot harder, depending on how they're carrying. I know some women who carry in their chest area under their blouse, others who carry using a belly-band, some others who carry on their leg or under their skirt, and a lot of women carry in their purse (which I consider to be a bad choice.) So ladies, think about how you're going to put that gun away before a bunch of armed police, all on short fuses because they know they're coming to an active shooter situation, see you with that gun in your hand and shoot you!
[Why I think purse carry is a bad idea: purses are often snatched, & there goes your gun; the bad guy is close, so you can't open your purse to get at your gun, & besides- if you're being robbed, he wants what's in that purse; you're threatened but your purse is on the desk/table/whatever and not near you; and the last reason is that it's impossible to have a fast draw from a purse. YMMV!]

I’m not a coward but I’m not trying to be a hero, either. My primary responsibility is to protect myself and my family, and if doing whatever’s necessary to accomplish that objective also means I’m protecting others around me, so be it . But I’m not about to insert myself into a situation unless I absolutely have to, especially if I have my family with me.

Alot of very good points here. The overall rule anyone carrying should abide by is never fight unless absolutely necessary. The fight you win 100% of the time is the one you don't take. Always attempt to flight.
As long as you abide by that rule you'll win the real fight when you're judged by your peers.

Great video! I haven’t thought about some of those things. One thing I’ve thought a lot about is trauma gear through. Especially after working in a hospital. My suggestion for a video would be another hunting related video. Do you hunt turkey too? Did the no scent hair care you had in one of your last hunting videos work well?
Good video. There has been a rash of home invasions and violent assaults on senior citizens. There are seniors out there considering ways to keep themselves safe. Some are considering buying a firearm; however, there are many considerations. Arthritis, joint replacements, and impaired mobility are all factors that might make many seniors unsure where to start. Perhaps a video touching on that would help others.

Good advice. Some years ago a friend of mine intervened in a domestic abuse incident. The man was beating his girlfriend. My friend tried to defend the girl. They both wound up attacking him and he got beat up pretty badly. Never again he said.

Great points. Know your surroundings! I’m kinda new to all this. I have my everyday and when all these ideas come up like you talked about I got a little nervous to carry. I have not carried daily since.
What are somethings someone can do to prepare themselves mentally for all these scenarios? How do you build your confidence beside to practice? Maybe if you haven’t already talk about being mentally prepared to carry and use if necessary?How you prepare to carry everyday? What to do if you do have to fire? Do you make a statement right away do you wait till you calm down and have a clear mind? Do you talk to a lawyer first? What’s the best “insurance to carry” to help protect you and your family? What do say when you get pulled over while carrying? If you can’t carry in the business you go to how to best secure your firearm?

@@ridnthawave708 I agree completely. I have had my CCW almost 2 yrs but just recently began trying to carry almost every day. Unless someone has serious psychological problems, carrying should change one's frame of mind for the better. It calms me, actually, and makes me more polite and accepting of a$$holes such as road rage instigators, crude individuals, etc. However, the world is getting crazier by the hour... I suggest carrying whenever possible. Just don't use it if ever in doubt!
@@michaell1665 i carry everyday, pretty much every where. i hope, i never have to use my weapon. but in my mind, it's either them or me, and i will not hesitate to protect myself, or family.
Dont be afraid to carry. You bought it for a reason. Watch a lot of videos “mistakes gun owners make”... some may resonate, some not so much.
Take Sav’s online course, or better yet, take a local “defensive shooting” course. Some places also have a “ladies special” course.
Get familiar with your state’s carrying versus transporting laws. Some may require the gun in a locked box or something if you dont have certain permit. If you get pulled over, turn off the car, put the keys on the dash & grip the wheel at 10 & 2 or make your hands otherwise visible. If the cop asks whether you have any weapons, obviously say “I have a valid permit & XYZ firearm”... or something like “I’m transporting XYZ gun to the range for practice”... DO NOT just reach for anything. Wait till its agreed upon that “I’ll be reaching for my license, permit, etc now”

You bring up good points, I would recommend the USCCA. As they have really done the research on personal defense shooting. As well the self defense insurance, which you will need if you are involved in a self defense incident. Even if you did everything perfectly legal.

Not a "Shooting" situation, but years ago, when I was "young and dumb" (but strong), I was breaking up a fight. I had control of the 2 guys that had jumped a friend of mind. Didn't know about the "3rd" guy who was behind me. He broke my jaw in 2 places.
