Eliza Fletcher is the reason I bought my first gun. I don't run, but I walk and I hike. There were more women than men in my basic handgun class last week. I'm taking my concealed carry class this weekend. RIP Eliza
As a man raised by a single mom, I feel this very deep in my heart. She had to deal with so many things as she divorced my dad when I was barely 2 years old. Now that I've grown up, I can be of help whenever she feels unsafe. It shouldn't feel weird or uncomfortable asking to be walked to the car, having to call someone because you felt creeped out, or anything that meant "being paranoid", because it's simply better and worthwhile to take that extra precaution. afe or if some creepy guy looks suspicious.
Ladies, I want you to know that a lot of evil people out there like to ambush people. If you have a better understanding how an ambush attack happens it will greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim. You can buy all the best tools to defend yourself but, the best tool you have is your way of thinking. Great video and solid advice.
I was in Brighton in Boston tonight for a concert...I was walking to the music hall from the parking lot when a man started to approach me...I put my hand up, told him, STOP, MOVE AWAY FROM ME, I kept repeating this as I went for my pom pepper spray I keep hooked in my bra... he did walk backward slowly and I was able to get away. I was so scared and pissed I could not have my gun on me due to going to the concert...but so damn thankful for my instincts, training and pepper spray....without those I may have frozen and had a really bad situation happen. Thank you Stav for all you do...keep it up!!!!
Solid information and advice. Well done ma'am!👍 During my career as a peace officer, one of my additional duties was a co-instructor for defense tactics at our academy. When ladies groups in our city called the PD for a seminar on personal protection, I was sent. After the introductions, I'd begin with laying out on a table, multiple weapons ranging from a simple pen all the way to a shotgun. Then pose the question as to what is the best weapon for protection. Pistol, shotgun, baseball bat, and others were always called out by the group. I'd nod my head and smiling, saying all are pretty good, but.... Still smiling, I'd tell them that they were born with the greatest weapon of all. Confused expressions were the common look on their faces. Then pointing to my temple, I'd tell them that the greatest weapon was their brain. Intuition, common sense, and being aware of everything around was their greatest weapon. Knowing to see and avoid things. Then we'd go from there in detail on not being a victim. It was a very rewarding experience for both the ladies and myself. Some would leave messages at the PD about an avoided encounter with a potential attack, thanks to knowing how evaluate their surroundings and remain safe. Now long since retired, I am not the physical specimen I once was. I employ the same thing about my own personal safety, even though I pack a 45.😬
Thank you for your service, and for your desire to help us women use the intuition we're born with. This is a great illustration and I know it will stick with me. I really would love to find instruction on how to increase my situational awareness. Any suggestions for books or courses to learn to increase my awareness? As a mom I often feel that I get distracted too easily when it in public and forget to stay aware

Great tips! My "wake up call" was Alexandra Zapp, a young lady killed in the bathroom of a Dunkin Donuts/Burger King/truckstop in Massachusetts that I used to frequent in my daily travels. (RIP, Ally.) Be safe, ladies. At least put up a good fight. 💪
RIP, Alexandra. That rest stop was also one I used on a regular basis back then. I traveled alone, so I was always on alert, but I ratcheted up my awareness after that. Thank you, Stav, for all your wonderful videos.
Terrific tips & reminders, Stav! I was recently cornered by a cagey man in Lowe's. He was following me from aisle to aisle with no cart or products in his hands. I gave him a glare, gave him the slip to the other side of store. BUT, I stopped paying attention and he snuck up on me 5 minutes later in the deserted outdoor center. He lamely chirped, "your husband is a lucky man." I smiled politely to keep the weird situation calm and put distance between us and get to the door. Got rid of him but kicking myself I didn't pay attention & left my mace in the car. 😕 This wasn't a pick up/attempt to ask me out (I'm a good 20 years older!!). I firmly believe he was experimenting with how far he could get with a prospective victim, and you know what? He won. He could have rushed me. I was alone. This lurking man was NOT shopping could have done some serious damage if he chose. Thank you for addressing how easy this can happen and your prevention reminders. We live in a time where we blow past these horrid attacks and deaths like the weather. Thank you for not forgetting these victims and all you do to educate and empower women. .
First of all, I am a man and this is from a man's point of view. After reading your comment the thought crossed my mind that he could have been using you for practice for a future attack on someone just to see how close he could get to someone without their knowledge and attack them. There are all kind of weirdos out there just looking for someone to prey on. Keep your pepper spray with you at all times and if you carry a gun, do so. Good luck and stay safe.
Great advice not just for women only. Senior citizens are targeted by bad people too. Be especially careful at night when you are more vulnerable. Most phones have a flashlight feature. Learn to quickly activate the light to light the way or signal rescue personnel where you are.
As a guy I agree with you 100%. Good advice for everyone. If your a guy and you need to get in someone’s space at a store let them know your intentions so they don’t question yours.
Thanks for the shout-out! I am pretty good at dissuading people from entering my personal space. I used to be nicer, but then I became a mom with people counting on me. :)
I live in the country about 10 miles outside Springfield Missouri and a woman that my wife works with is a avid runner and started noticing a man following her around in his vehicle and a few times he came close to hitting her on the side of the road.
Haha Perfect timing Mila! The whole reason I started carrying was one night after I got off shift as a bartender (3pm-11pm) I walked out to my car and saw a note on my wind shield. While I am sure it was harmless I was extremely worried. This person who I didn’t know knew what car I drove. That terrified me! Just because this person didn’t mean me harm doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t and didn’t have a way of getting to me. Proactive not reactive.
Along with situational awareness comes situational avoidance. Don't put yourself in potentially risky situations. I'm not here to blame, but Memphis is a high crime city. As a 215lb male in my 30's, there are places I would NOT run alone at 4am. Armed or not.
I carried pepper spray before but it was the slide over lock kind, and after having it on my hip (it goes on your belt) and my body movement constantly unlocking it, and the video you posed about pepper spray I got another one that has the flip up lock, it's gel so there's no back spray (or at least minimal) it has uv dye in it so the attacker can be identified and the manufacturer replaces your pepper spray for free if you have to use it in self defense and I feel way better about having it now, I also practice accessing it every morning before I leave since it and my stun gun are all I carry rn. You're legit a life saver thank yoy
Thank you for making this. ❤ I live in Canada where self-defence in any form is illegal so I can only carry dog spray when on walks, (dog spray would still be illegal if used on a person but its something). Thank you so much for bringing this up- you read my mind. I was thinking of this topic this morning during my morning run. My CCW Appt is next month, but this morning I noticed someone behind me suddenly, he appeared out of nowhere!! It was nerve wrecking, trying to lose him. It actually stressed me out. This poor lady was targeted! I don't believe this dude was out at that time of morning just randomly had the thought to do what he did out of the blue. He watched her and knew where she'd be and how to target her. What a shame. Tragic
Obviously Eliza Fletcher had no idea she was about to be killed. It sucks but we have to always be at the ready for any and all threats. You are so right that women need to be constantly aware of there surroundings. Great video!
Great advice as usual and not only for women but men also. As you said and I keep saying to myself when I'm alone "Situational Awareness". Even when you are out with other people keep your head on a swivel and constantly be aware of your surroundings.
Very good video and information Stav. These days I'm more aware than ever of my surroundings. The world is getting worse and women need to actively protect themselves.
Let me start off by saying my condolences go out to her family & friends. I really do hope one day women take personal safety more serious so things like this stops happening because there is evil in this world. To all & women especially who read this please watch this channel for tips Stav is a good person to help you. Do whatever you need to stay safe carry a firearm, knife, mace, taser or anything to protect yourself & remember there's no rules in life & death.
Man thats too bad, I live and hike in an area where there is bears so I always carry my g29. Any person wishing me harm is going to meet their maker as well. As a women I believe its so important to arm ourselves, and not be another victim. Great video Stav!
When deploying O.C. spray, one is best served by depressing the trigger/button with one's thumb, never the index finger. This will greatly help in aiming the spray stream towards the target.
Thank you so much for making this video!!! Yes, as a woman I get exactly what you mean -- as I move through the world I have to remain vigilant and prepare for potential dangerous scenarios. I live in a major city and it's annoying AF how many men try to approach me. There is a night and day difference for me when I'm out alone vs. with my boyfriend. I grew up with guns and I'm working on customizing my concealed carry setup.
On July 12th 2013, a woman was attacked in a park that I frequent and was at that later day. It was reported she grabbed his knife BY THE BLADE END. After hearing that report, I realized I would have never been as brave as her. That weekend I got my CCL. STILL AFRAID I didn't carry anything other than pepper spray/gel FOR 5 YEARS!. Rewind back. THAT attacker was Daniel Bartelt. Look up the story of Jessie Blodgett (depicted on Dateline, 48 hours and other crime TV docs). While maintaining my license. I still didn't carry til 2019. Having extensive intense training professionally and on my own, I am finely confident enough to carry daily WITH ONE IN THE CHAMBER. Don't be like me, putting it off in fear. GREAT ADVICE all around Stav 👍🏻
I want to personally thank you about educating me with the pom pepper spray. I just had someone walk into my backyard and try to open my backdoor with my daughter inside. He got spooked when he seen her but as He turned around I emptied the whole container of spray on him. He was arrested and taken to the hospital. Thank you so so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Danielle I also sent this message on your Facebook
Kudos to you for this video. I have passed it on to a number of my female friends that I think would appreciate your approach to both situational awareness as well as self defense
Thank you for this video and for keeping it so real. Im 4' 11" and I have never done any sort of self defense training and I do not practice jujitsu. My husband just gave me my Shield (orig, not the plus). I didn't ever think about carrying it on my person, but after watching your video... We women should protect ourselves, absolutely. Thank you for what you're doing. Your content is valuable.
You and your husband are amazing people. I really appreciate your knowledge and advice in these areas it really helps and I hope alotta of people view these videos. It's great advice and love your passion for carrying. More and more woman need to carry. It could happen in any neighborhood any place. You need to be prepared to fight back like you said. Keep up the great work. And keep educated people. Your really Making a difference
Great content. I am glad to know women are empowering themselves against evil men and women. Too many people are clueless about their surroundings or how to protect themselves. More often than not, I am always aware of my surrounding, train BJJ, and have weapons to defend myself or others from being victims of time. The past few years have been a train wreck for our county
Fran, no one ALWAYS following intuition. We've all made dangerous mistakes in judgment in the past. No one is MIss Perfect. The goal is to remember NOT to make it again as form of self-preservation. May the deaths of these women not be in vain as indicative by us not running alone odd hours or not having a force multiplier.
Great video and lots of great tips. Since watching your videos, I’m more aware of my surroundings and am on guard and ABS (always be scanning). Thank you.
I’m in Massachusetts too. I just got my first gun and will be taking a class in a couple of weeks in Braintree. I haven’t carried mine yet. I just got it other day. So I’m still getting used to the idea. But I do always have pepper spray on me. I will be carrying both my pepper spray and my gun.
Awesome information and video, I also run with Aftershokz Bone conduction or the Bose sunglasses with over ear speakers that allows you to hear what's going on around you, I've used both for years and they work well with allowing you to hear what's going on around you. Blessings and stay safe.
Awsome video!!! I have a request please if your able!!! I’m not sure if you herd of it, it’s called “Fast Strike” it’s a small tactical whip. Supposedly a father invented for his daughter as a means not carry something that she could defend her self with. The reviews I have read all seem very good. However, there has been no female that have reviewed it. I would like to get your opinion on it, as to weather or not you would recommend as a non lethal self defense tool. Thank you an I’m a big fan!!
Hi Stav! Your videos are so helpful! Note on the earbuds - look into Shokz headphones - they are 'bone inductors' and sit in front of the ear vs inside ear canal. You can still hear what's going on around you. Highly recommend. Keep the videos coming!
I, and my wife, use bone conduction headphones, turned down low enough so we can hear our feet hitting the ground. We hike where there's a lot of mtn bikes coming fast down hills. we also walk/run VERY EARLY around deserted areas. These allow you to hear things, but we still carry protection.
great advice that can be used by all. One thing about using a pepper spray and running or being outside in general is animal protection . I gave a POM pepper spray to my daughter in law when she told me about an encounter she had with 2 dogs. Since giving her the spray she has had to use it twice in 2 separate occasions. The first was with 2 healer type dogs and the other was a pit bull. Both times a single shot to the face and they lost all interest in being a bad ass.
Women have been taught to be polite and to not make a fuss. We need to relearn that we don’t need to be polite, it’s okay to be overly cautious, and to trust energy. We need to trust our instincts and f*ck politeness.
Great video and fantastic job. You are not crazy to have fear when going out. We have ourselves only. If you are a woman of color or older, we are top targets and our cases get very little help here in Chicago. Stay prayed up, strong in spirit, keep your dog trained and ready to defend you. And remember, fear will keep us from using what we know to do -- fight for our lives. Praying for us all. 💞
Great video.....just forwarded it to my wife. I bought her (and myself) several POMs a few months ago, as she walks our dog everyday on some local trails around our house. I told her, if you arent ready to carry a gun, at least carry pepper spray....even if a wild animal (we are Texas and have coyotes/foxes/bobcats/cougars) attacks our dog, she might be able to save our dog with the pepper spray.
A co-worker is a conceal carry, and was jogging down an old railroad bed, (no tracks). A railroad tunnel that went under a roadway . A man was standing in the middle of the trail, blocking the far end of the tunnel. He appeared to be texting. As she passed he sprayed her with pepper spray less than two feet away and pushed her into the wall. She reached for her gun, but he was so close, he got it out of her hand and pointed it at her. He pulled the trigger and missed her. Another runner saw this, was also conceal carry, had a clean head shot with no people downrange if bullet exited him. She fired and he dropped. The police found several large zip ties, duct tape and a pillow case in the bushes a few feet where the man was standing. Clearly this was a planned event.
Stav, there are bone conduction earbuds that transmit sound through the skull, and don't block the ears. There are also many brands of earbuds ($100+ range) that allow you to isolate outside noises, or allow them to be heard through the music. Me? I rarely wear buds unless I'm in a waiting room. Or in bed. Its that hypervigilance thing, I need to hear what's happening.
Great video for us old women out there too, I do carry and also the pepper spray, I was once attack in front of a Walgreen store by two doped up dudes , ever sense then I have carried , your advice is so helpful , we in Iowa had a runner also killed and raped a couple years ago, so yes, your advice is so helpful, thank you so much, 👍🤗
... Good information ... Don't make yourself an easy target for those who prey ... The best tools are awareness and common sense ... especially when alone , stay off the phone and don't limit your senses of sight and sound .. if where you live and travel is "probably safe" .. that's not good odds ... Todays mindset of the criminal element is very different than most perceive ,, the system is showing that not much will stop their lifestyle ,,if anything... except maybe a victim not willing to be part of their plan ... your defenses are up to you ,, get familiar with and train with whatever you choose .... you are your own first responder ..
Stay. Love your point about buds in Your ears. The bluetooth bone conduction headphones allow you run/walk without anything inserted in your ear and you can hear all surrounding noise.
I walk with a fierce looking 105lb Dogo Argentino who would tear someone’s head off if I was attacked, and I STILL wouldn’t leave my house without my EDC…

Very informative and helpful video. Thank you for sharing, and I'm so glad you listened to your intuition at the home depot store.
Thank you for speaking out on this life issue. It is important for your confident voice to be heard by other women and all people.
Very smart avoiding confrontation. Pulling a weapon is always your last resort.
Man thats too bad, I live and hike in an area where there is bears so I always carry my g29. Any person wishing me harm is going to meet their maker as well. As a women I believe its so important to arm ourselves, and not be another victim. Great video Stav!
Great advice. You can never be too cautious. These days intuition is worth listening too.
Excellent advice and well done, Stav! Stay safe young lady!!👍
Thanks for another great video Stav. All you women (and men) stay safe out there.
I want to personally thank you about educating me with the pom pepper spray. I just had someone walk into my backyard and try to open my backdoor with my daughter inside. He got spooked when he seen her but as He turned around I emptied the whole container of spray on him. He was arrested and taken to the hospital.
Thank you so so much
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Danielle
I also sent this message on your Facebook
Phenomenal vid! Sharing on my FB page for my female friends and family to watch.
I'm sure Mac knows this but you are awesome thank you for your insight and wisdom from a women's perspective
Old nonjogging guy here but this was a very excellent presentation.
You always provide great information. I have forwarded to my Wife, and a few other female friends. Good Job!
Great information Stav. You made some good points that really get you thinking. I always go by my intuition which has save me from harm….
I love your message, I am a guy and former cop. Every woman needs to hear your message.
Great video and advice as always Stav! Just shared on my FB and Twitter.
Thank you, this has been on my mind, I ordered POM for wife everyone in the family, daughter, to put in cars and on person.
Great video and lots of great tips. Since watching your videos, I’m more aware of my surroundings and am on guard and ABS (always be scanning). Thank you.
Thanks! Just ordered 2 POM's for both my wife and daughter. Already bought them both pistols. Now just need to convince them to carry them.
This came right on time. I just started training for a 5k
Awesome information and video, I also run with Aftershokz Bone conduction or the Bose sunglasses with over ear speakers that allows you to hear what's going on around you, I've used both for years and they work well with allowing you to hear what's going on around you. Blessings and stay safe.
Excellent video
Awsome video!!! I have a request please if your able!!! I’m not sure if you herd of it, it’s called “Fast Strike” it’s a small tactical whip. Supposedly a father invented for his daughter as a means not carry something that she could defend her self with. The reviews I have read all seem very good. However, there has been no female that have reviewed it. I would like to get your opinion on it, as to weather or not you would recommend as a non lethal self defense tool. Thank you an I’m a big fan!!
Thank you for sharing your insights.
Good advice. It’s sad that it’s needed, and I’m thankful for thoughtful people like you who share this.
Solid Gold content here ladies. Thanks Stav.
I respect what you are doing sister if God, we must defend and equip against the delinquent.
great advice that can be used by all.
Thanks for the great information your putting out!
Fantastic video and guidance. Thanks so much. Shared with my wife and daughter-in-law’s! Keep up the superb work on this channel!
FYI, your hair looks amazing in this video.
My daughter used to say to me: "Have fun at Home Depot! Don't get stalked by a creepo!" 🤣
Great advice! I didn't even know those clothes were made!
My favorite headphones for situational awareness while running are Aftershokz bone conduction headphones
Shared the video with my wife and she loved it! 💪🔥
You’re doing awesome work on this channel!!
Great video for us old women out there too, I do carry and also the pepper spray, I was once attack in front of a Walgreen store by two doped up dudes , ever sense then I have carried , your advice is so helpful , we in Iowa had a runner also killed and raped a couple years ago, so yes, your advice is so helpful, thank you so much, 👍🤗
Thanks for putting this together! I have shared it with my daughter.
Another great teaching video 🙏🏻😘
