I played this after the remake and after finishing it i loved it.
I'm still in my teens, played many modern games and have been accustumed to modern standars, yet still this is one of the best games i ever played.
I wish more people weren't so closeminded and stubborn when it comes to older media especially games, a medium that ages quickly, FF7 is an incredible game. i think square knew remaking it with modern technology would still not be enough so they opted for a more unique approach.
It's flawed, has sometimes bad translation, i could go on yet despite that it's a game that in my opinion stood the test of time, maybe not graphically, but everything else from the combat to the story and it's unique charme, Final Fantasy 7 is one of the best games of all time

Its great to hear that younger ppl still are able to get into it and enjoy it. I have watched a few ppl the last few Days (Weeks) play it after they played Remake and wanting to know what happened. I might be wrong here but… i think this was also SE Plan that ppl who liked the Remake will go back to it to understand what is actually happening. I cant just say how much they really planned this out to happen or if they just thought this would be a Bonus for them (sales wise). But i really think they knew what they are doing with the whole Projekt and i love it.
      At least so far.

Like 7 years ago or so, when I was a kid, I wanted a game on my iPad, so my dad bought ff7 and installed it. At first I didn’t really care for it, but when I had nothing else to do one day, it really made me interested. Back then I was bad at video games and had a lot of help from him. I specifically remember him getting the enemy skill from the Midgard Serpent thing early on by using the elemental materia. I also remember the soundtrack very well. I’m honestly thinking I should revisit this game.

I believe, if you press a button during battles [select? I think?] Then it has a text box showing what the item you hover over does, like echo screen [Cures Silence]
Anyway I'm really happy with your review; ff7 has been my special interest for 25 years and I'm so glad to see more people enjoying it! It gives me LIFE especially when someone likes it and they don't even have the nostalgia for it that I do ☺️

I played this game in 1997 and pretty much replay it so many times it was burn into my mind for many years after. It was something else back then, so when I see a title like this on a video, when I'm looking for the Remake cutscenes... Final Fantasy 7 - 25 Years Later (also for the first time) I was curious to know, how a player from the HD era will see that old masterpiece that blew our minds back when we were kids. Well, I expected a lot of critics, been an old game and all, but I'm happy that the OG still have the same charm that trap us into this wonderful world, even after 25 years and your review was not only a pleasure to watch, it was hilarious. 😂👍

By all accounts I've heard, Aerith's apparent annoyingness/lack of depth is largely a product of the poor english translation. Aerith has a lot more personality in the original Japanese. I played FF7 using a redone translation patch and found her delightful. Perhaps next time you play, if you do, you might want to check that out?

Wonderful review! Really awesome to hear your experience and perspective.
You may not have known this but if you press select in battle, you get descriptions on what each item does and what each action means. Also, it’ll give the enemy’s name when you’re selecting who to attack.
Also thankfully, the modern versions of this game can turn off random encounters for those long moments of just trying to explore.

Awesome video mate! Nothing make me happier than seeing Final Fantasy VII being appreciated by new, young audience. Although it is a bit crudely and hastily presented, the characters, themes and story is SO EXTREMELY well written, even to this day. It's a kind of writing ambition that has sadly often been lost in modern western AAA games... Sure, I got a FFVII moment when playing through Enslaved: Oddyssey to the West. The ending of that game was eye opening and bone chilling, it stirred up similar emotions like FFVII did. However, it was just one moment, they spent a whole game building up to it. But FFVII gave you these kind moments and surprises several times throughout the game. But you can tell that it is all about good writing, Ninja Theory, who worked on Enslaved hired Alex Garland to make the most out of their writing (same guy who wrote 28 Days Later, Never Let me Go, Ex Machina etc.), and you can really tell that a real talent was put on the team. Because It's hard to come by good efficient writing that focus on themes rather than sheer quantity (like in a lot of large open world AAA games). And I think it's one of the things that will make FFVII a timeless classic, the extremely well executed writing.
I also love how younger people enjoy the game and can see past the crude presentation (which was state of the art, and highly impressive in 1997). Square worked with a lot of limitations back then, the reason why the characters were "gouraud shaded" and lacked textures was due to memory managment and loading, instead of houndreds of KBytes per character and enemy, these just became a couple of bytes small. And truthfully, having characters and enemies being designed with recognizable shapes and colours just adds such a lively variety to the game, and it also makes the design of these look timeless in my opinion. Textured characters back in 1997 often aged far worse than FFVII so I am kind of happy about how the technical limitations shaped the look of the game. The music had similar issues, by using midi instead of CD Audio, they could squeeze out several songs in just MB or two, meanwhile CD Audio track would require at least ~50MB of storage for just one track. Which would leave no room for FMVs, pre-rendered backgrounds etc. The CD format was new, and developers struggled with loading... A LOT, and although you could theoretically compress data back then, it wasn't feasible most of the time, since you always battled loading times, adding decompression was often not an option.

Your gripe about the No names of enemies or not being able to read description of what items do in battle is not a flaw in the game. You just didn't press the button that showed the tooltips. Cant remember of the top of My head, but a textbox appears right above the menuscreen/statusscreen that described what you Are targeting(foe, character, choosing item/spell).
But otherwise i liked this review of the game. Always interesting to hear ppls thought. Also if they played Ff7 remake first, how it changes their viewing, since some events dont make sense unless you play the original 😅. And if you go back to remake after playing the original, you catch a lot of little detail, especially with Aerith and Sephiroth...

you did great justice to the goat! having asked it for christmas 1997, 10yo at the time i can tell you it had been kind of my bible since then. only after bein haunted by it for a long time did i realise it was a blessing to witness the appearance of such a piece of art, especially as a 10yo, being the only one able to grasp it... Your focus on music made me understand something about this 9th art essence. Where immersion, visual and sculptural, narrative, architectural.. all dimensions of art have to fit and procede in harmony, as if it was a musical composition. FF7 really is the most Epic opera of our time.

I played FF7 for the first time back about 2019-2020 (I was like 16 at the time) and I even had an small old tube tv that I would use to play some retro games on since I felt I was playing the game more accurately to the way it was intended and MAN, I had a blast. Of course I did follow a guide a little bit to get some of the harder stuff to find like the Knights Of The Round summon, the best weapons for the characters, you name it, but going through the story I felt how unique it was for the time since it took the series a little out of the fantasy genre and brought sci-fi elements into the mix and I loved how unique that was for the time. I'm going through remake currently and I've just been having a blast with it, it's the same game yet so, so different in a good way. Though, I actually didn't start out the series with this game nor is it my favorite, that honor goes to Final Fantasy IX, which I completely recommend anyone to play, the graphical style of the game completely blows FF7 out of the water along with the story, characters, world and locations. But FF7 currently does have a pretty good spot at being in second.

They told you it's in a place where sunlight won't reach (hmm, sounds like underwater), and considering you just recently got a submarine, I think it's a fair puzzle. IT'S SO GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK ❤
FFVII is one of my favourite games, even though I only played it for the first time last year. I was equally blown away by how well it holds up over 2 decades after its release. As always, your writing, narration, humour, and editing came together beautifully in this comeback video.
I couldn’t believe how dense the story was when I first played the game; the narrative - woven together by the world, characters, and music - still shines today. I was pulled in right from the start, especially with the thematic backdrop in Midgar being planetary degradation, fuelled by a corporation getting so big that they also become the police, military, and government. It (unfortunately) still resonates today.
One narrative decision that worked SO well was Sephiroth’s introduction being a long buildup. We don’t actually get to see him in the flesh for many hours - we only see his Masamune, a flashback showing us his insane stats, and the aftermath of him defeating a Zolom that would’ve obliterated our party. It sets up a feeling of dread right from the start.
But the music is what breathes so much life into the game, takes it to a whole other level, and makes the experience SO much more memorable.
I agree that the genius of the story is when you start realizing that Cloud is an unreliable narrator. It fuels your curiosity to keep playing and understand what in the WORLD is going on. But I also wasn’t a fan that the game punishes your curiosity with very frequent random encounters. And I feel like I just repeated a bunch of things you said in the video, but I just love this game to bits.
I almost spat my coffee out laughing a few times. The amount of thought, time, and passion that you put into your work astounds me, and the end result is always spectacular. Incredible work on this. It was thoughtful and well-paced and funny as ever. This was the absolute best way to start my Sunday, and it’s so, so SO good to have you back and doing what you love. ❤

Great review and I can confirm that I do not tire of this OST over 20 years later.
It always makes me chuckle when people's first thought when it comes to FF7 is 'the game where Aeris dies' because as you allude to, as iconic as that is, the biggest and most interesting twist in this game is around Cloud's identity crisis and the events in Nibelheim and I imagine most who haven't played this game know nothing about it.
Also just to address a couple of the criticisms; I imagine you are looking at reviewing the original game but these days you can turn random encounters off on most versions of the game.
In addition, you actually CAN see what effects items have by opening the help window during battle. I'm pretty sure the description for echo screen in that window literally reads 'Cures silence'
