  • Nier: Automata is one of the best games I've ever played. No, seriously. It is. No I am being serious. It mixes a really fun game with a bunch of genuinely beautiful deep dives into the human condition. But in a way that isn't super forced and cringe like other games you know what I mean??? Anyways here's my video watch for the 2B butt jokes I guess idk lol

There is actually a third option with Pascal. You can just walk away. Choosing not to erase or kill them. It was what I chose to do and it was quite honestly pretty powerful. Broken Pascal calls out and says "How could you?" but later on in the game you get the clip of Pascal you mentioned and it was one of the most hopeful moments in a game I ever saw. It seemed Pascal was going to continue forward even with the great loss they already faced.

    WE NEED MORE PUPPY BREAKS.
On the real, HELL YEAH DUDE, you did such a great job. Knew from the introduction how well you'd articulate your thoughts, you absolutely did the game justice. The way you spoke really got me to empathize with and understand the hardship and trauma within this story. These days I find myself rewinding to analyze all the incredible little edits as well, small but make huge differences. The cinematic shots were so dope too, made the video feel really professional! Congratulations on getting this done, I know this was a tricky video to tackle but you went above and beyond with this one. Thanks for a super enthralling watch, always looking forward to your videos. ❤

I played Nier Replicant after Automata and I highly recommend you do too. I love it for the same reasons you love this game. The music, the depressing tone with subtle bits of hope, and the complicated motives of the mc and his enemy. Chef’s kiss.
Forgot to mention it’s also really cool to see stuff that seemed interesting in automata make a whole lot of sense and gives depth to some characters like Emil and the twins.

Snug, you’ve done it again. I wouldn’t even know where to start with this game, and you managed to pull out the most salient points to articulate your thoughts in a way that does the story so much justice. I can’t imagine how hard this must have been to write, let alone doing it in a way that incorporates your humour, all whilst juggling the thematic heaviness of the story.
5:47 - 6:03 is exactly how I felt the entire way through. I love this game so, so, so, so, soooooo much and you’ve articulated why so beautifully here. ❤

    SPOILERS
When the children of pascal's village take their own lives, you also have the option of just walking away when he begs you to end his suffering. I did this and I'm still not sure whether I was right in doing so. I didn't want to get rid of the Pascal that I grew to care for throughout the game, and I feel like, although the memory of what happened to his village will never go away, one day he might be able to rebuild and consider how instilling fear is valuable to an extent but also can lead to catastrophic results. I felt like killing him was wrong, but erasing his memory is just asking for history to repeat itself. I feel like I had good reasons for justifying the choice to leave him.
Then when i started walking away he said "how could you... A2" and my heart sank.

But omg the story. Absolutely 💯
It helped not playing the previous game so as to add to the shock of the pointless android fight(humanity's fate).
Furthermore 9S..arguably the best character, I teared up when he's repeatedly stabbing at the 2b/machine core and his laughter turning mad/sinister.
My favourite game of all time. I implore you to do the quests to find out more about the world. Then try the remaster of nier replicant! It's not automata but close enough.

idk if you've listened to the nier replicant soundtrack, but a lot of the melodies come from that game and might be cool to listen to! for example, realizing that emil's shop has the same tune as emil / sacrifice was hilarious

So I highly suggest everybody check out both his personal Twitch (which is just Kyle McCarley) and the one he does with his friends, The Board and Barrel, where they play board games together. I played NieR Automata after years of ignoring it because of the FFXIV raid and how BANGING the music was. I avoided it because I assumed it would be a surface plot and boring characters all for some cheap fan service, but I was wrong. Also, 2B is an astoundingly deep character, I'm sorry I judged you ma'am.
I'm a sucker for hidden depth in a game, and this game. This game goes deeeeeeep. For example, the implication 9S knows 2B is his executioner well before A2 tells him. He's a smart cookie. There's even a prequel story where on multiple lives, he knew ahead of time she was an E-type model and even destroyed himself to spare her the pain of killing him again, while in another he tries to kill her first.
And in fact, that censored word. The game doesn't take issue with swearing. Its predecessor has one of the most foulmouthed protagonists ever with Kaine. And Jackass uses the word 'fuck' uncensored in her report on Machines. In Japanese, the verb has two censored characters paired with 'shitai,' (roughly, 'want to do ____') but that's pretty much an endless possibility of actions. From fuck to kill. I've seen suggestions for 'destroy,' 'free,' and even 'rape.' It's really not so clear what the censored word is. The game itself has no problem with expletives and literally shows robots trying to bang, so the censor to me speaks less of what 9S wants, and more of what he doesn't want to hear. The scene is inside 9S's mind, so what is so abhorrent for him to face that he would block it out? Somehow, I don't think it's 'fuck.' But maybe it is. And of course, it could also be a Rorschach test for the player--what word to they fill in the blank with?
Within the game itself, though, you get little hints something isn't quite as it seems with 2B very early, though. From even the demo, where she goes from 'emotions are prohibited' to 'Just shut up and do what I say!' when her Pod tells her trying to repair 9S is useless. Pretty extreme for a unit she allegedly just met and shouldn't care about. She didn't bat an eye when the other units she was sent to the mission with exploded at the start. And of course, while emotions may be prohibited, it seems like an unenforced rule. Most other YoRHa units are very emotional, from their background gossip to their side quests.
And speaking of side quests, there are hints pretty early about the shadiness of YoRHa, especially with the three defecting units. But my favourite part, given how freakin' confused I was about 2B's memories apparently being in her sword (the biggest USB ever??), is that right at the start, you're asked to retrieve 16D's sword. And in addition to learning she wanted to defect, you learn her memories were stored in her weapon. It's like... right there. I was an idiot.
Also... Can I just say 9S is OP as hell? No seriously. I was infiltrating Emil's hideout solo and way underlevel, and I hacked my way down an line of enemies by sneaking up on them, taking one over, then sneaking up on the next, and so forth, like a self-destructing conga line. It was glorious. I felt like a god. Become as gods. (๏‿๏ )
Anyway. After playing Automata and having my feelings torn to shred and loving every minute of it, I completed the FFXIV raids. 1) they are fun as hell omg, I farmed for Pod 316 before it was a guaranteed drop, I ran Copied Factory over 200 times, and it is still one of my faves, I'd run it 200 more, happily. 2) I firmly believe these raids are the canon ending to NieR Automata. Yeah, I said what I said. The raids are an extension of Ending D (y'know, the one where he kills A2 and dies impaled on 2B's sword, how poetic) if 9S chooses to board the Ark. And before you come at me with the stage play, or how that would be so silly, uh. This is Yoko Taro we're talking about. Yoko 'Actually, teleporting to modern day Tokyo with the dragon is the canon ending' Taro. Yoko 'this side novella where Emil splits into hundreds of clones and fights aliens shaped like penises is the canon ending' Taro. Yoko 'lol, this whole game is controlled by androids experimenting with quantum immortality' Taro. So yeah. I do firmly believe the Shadowbringer raids are legit. And I'm not even mad. Maybe the next NieR game will have bearded Lalafells er... dwarves. Dwarf machines.

I remembered a quote from Carl Sagan when playing the game that's: "An extraterrestrial being, newly arrived on earth - scrutinizing what we mainly present to our children on television and radio and in movies, newspapers, magazines, comics and many books might easily conclude that we are intent on teaching them murder, rape, cruelty, superstition, credulity and consumerism. We keep at it, and through constant repetition many of them finally get it. What kind of society could we create if, instead, we drummed into them science and a sense of hope?" and this looks to describe what a being that's not human would replicate without the context of the humanity, what we think of ourselves. The way they use philosophers to represent our thinking and how's subverted because of a lack of understanding is really well done. It can be also about our legacy as humans, of when we are long gone what will remain for the eternity to come.
Wounderful video by the way, is the first that I have seen with good humor but keeping serious when it's needed.

I am glad you liked this game so much and i wish i could. But this game is really not for everyone.
    "it makes you care"
it made quite the opposite for me and i am left with the question "why should i care?" And fun thing is - it supports the message: "would you care for someone you don't know?"
After playing through the whole game i felt nothing. I couldn't care less for the characters, the story, nothing is really developed but i am going to help other people. Because they ARE real and i could care for them, not the devoid of character like in this game.

I'm going to REEEEEEEALLY hold back and NOT type up a doctoral thesis on why I love this game and why we'd be best friends over it. Instead, I wanna mention that, for the longest time, Majora's Mask was my favorite game ever. Nothing ever came close. However, NieR: Automata did, and I refused to believe that I loved it more. I was so biased with my nostalgia goggles and when I had beaten it, that was that.
That was, until I decided to 100% the game, like I did for Majora's Mask. It was when I tackled the post game content. There's a side quest that has you taking control of a robot that was forced to fight against its will. Completing that side quest gives you a full-length 6 minute long music video for your effort. A 6 minute, high quality produced music video, FOR A FUCKING SIDE QUEST!!!!
After recovering from mind exploding from that, I had no choice but to rank it as my favorite game of all time.

When I first started the game and played the first few hours,
I really didn’t know, if I like the game or not,
but overtime it became my favourite game of all time…
every single aspect of it is just perfect, from the story to the soundtrack.
The only thing that bothers me, is the storytelling, that goes beyond what the game gives you.
There are theatre plays books and so on and so on, you have to read and listen to, to understand everything.
And that in my opinion is just not a good idea, when lots of those things are only available in Japanese language.

Okay I enjoyed the video, but I think there are a few things that you missed. First, it's heavily implied that Adam does NOT say that 9S wants to "f*ck" 2B, that's just what our baby weirdo gamer brains immediately turn to. Rather, the most fitting word I think in this case is "kill". What you didn't touch upon on in the videos spoiler discussion is that 9S had known the truth about 2Bs purpose looooong before A2 broke it down to him. Throughout the game, starting generally at the scenes where Adam has his discussion with 9S inside his robo brain, it's constantly showed how depraved and emotional of a person 9S can be, Adam most specifically targeting 9Ss capacity for hatred. Now, before I get into better more clear reasons on why he knew about 2B, I think it's best to point out that 9S was being chastised about his behavior before Adam gave those few words that completely wrecked him. Like, let's be real, I don't think 9S would start getting all NOOOOOOOOOOOOO from it being revealed he wants to bang 2B cause let's be real who doesn't, it's the fact he wants to kill her in resentment for all she's done to him in the past that he feels this way. At another point in the game, that helps give better light to the idea that he pretty much knew about her true nature for most of the game is when his memories are "invaded". We can see memories that CLEARLY shouldn't still be there in the background, as his memories of such events should have been wiped, yet they are still there and highlighted as one of his many moments with 2B. If we think about 9S with the idea that he has been able to secretly keep certain memories of his past lives, or at the very least subconsciously acknowledge them, then we can safely say he knew about 2B for a while. Thinking with that in mind helps make certain plot points connect easier, for example why the virus invading his memories of 2B suddenly became 2B herself while 9S was stabbing the crap out of her, or why his screams are so devastated after Adams words, or why A2 quite literally says "but you already knew that" when she tells him the truth. The thing is, both in the Automata event story in Nier Reincarnation and the books, it's further elaborated on what 9Ss and 2Bs relationship was like in their many many previous lives. In one story from the books, 9S knew about her identity while still partnered with her on a mission, and attempts to kill her when they are sent to an isolated temple (this actually results in them both dying as hacking 2B with negative intent lead to him getting a deathly virus). In Reincarnation, he hacks into her to help her out during an ambush and subsequently accidentally sees many of her memories of killing him over and over, however although he is slightly apprehensive, he doesn't tell her or confront her about the memories after they finish their business, because he loves her too much. In fact, if anything he wants to support her more after seeing them, still vouching for a world where they can just be together. So basically, 9S always knew, and has known throughout multiple lives, although his reactions are varied it's true that he's so down bad for her that even though he's conflicted on his feelings about her, he still very obviously has his feelings of love at the helm.
Also, on another note, I personally VERY much disagree with your take on the rebooted Pascal looking up at the sky in 9Ss ending. As, if you make the choice to reboot his memories then visit the village as 9S, you can meet him as a vendor. He has completely forgotten even what machines are, breaking apart the bodies of his fellow villagers for parts to sell, even selling the cores of children he so desperately wanted to protect. The only thing he seems to subconsciously remember is the importance of the village to him, as it seems he immediately went there after waking up. It's absolutely disgusting and uncomfortable, he is going against everything he ever lived for in the worst possible way and 9S makes zero effort to say anything once he realizes Pascal has forgotten, just leaves a somber silence that Pascal fills. Death is ABSOLUTELY a mercy in this case. The game acting like A2 doesn't care about Pascal that much if you kill him (A2 does not quietly mumble Pascals name in sadness if you kill him) is just cruel.
But yeah anyways that's all I think you missed! Great video and keep up with the good content

Yep, totally agree, that’s the whole unveiling in the final of the game; which really made me wanted to had less of the 9S revenge arc, that is so much overused in anime or media in general, and have instead the narrative focus on the complexity of this recall and it’s outcomes, the whole f*ck/k*ll 2B thing, but the the whole build up of the “A act” and “B Act” turns into revenge bullshit in the “C Act”. This is my main gripe with this game, it’s really trying to be complex, it’s really trying to not be nihilistic, but does it achieve this goal? I think that kinda, in a very unsatisfactory way.
Anyway, this plot arc that you told happens in Reincarnation involving 2B and 9S is much more interesting to me than what Automata presents us, I’ve begun playing it recently, and haven’t reached this part yet.

@@torugolago The thing about it is that the Automata story in Reincarnation was only part of an event that has passed now, there was also one for Replicant as well, and as of right now one for Drakengard 3 is going on. Once you unlock the ability to do subquests, go to the Mama menu (menu with the ghost on it), go to quests, then select subquests, and then you can do the events that involve the collabs with previous games in the timeline.
However, like I said, the collabs with Automata and Replicant have ended and Drakengard 3 is going on rn, if you want to see the Automata story, just go on RUclips and search "Nier reincarnation automata event story" and it should come up. Same with the Replicant and Drakengard one if you don't feel like doing that quest for any reason.
Also also, personally on a second look I don't really enjoy the whole 9S angry arc either because even though he's greiving and completely emotionally compromised I really hate how he just deadass becomes a complete unsympathetic dickhead. Like, I understand why he's doing what he's doing to a certain degree, but he did it to the point where he's just a horrible person. This is exactly why A2 is the best playable character we have cause she's like a total subversion of 9S. I remember I didn't kill the brother robots and never sold Pascals core, so even if A2 still kind of acts like she doesn't care about machines afterwards in the story, my actions as a player can make it feel like she still does. :)

At this point, whenever a video starts with “NieR: Automata is one of the best games I’ve ever played”, I just click away again immediately. Especially because all of these hype videos seem to be 30+ minutes long. Perhaps this particular video actually contains nuanced thoughts on it. But I’ve watched too much mindless praise of this pretentious and superficial drivel of a game to give the fanboys the benefit of the doubt at this point.
I hope that in the future, more people who are critical of it will have the courage to come forward and voice their opinions, without being afraid of being gunned down by the gatling Pods of the superfans, who keep defending the incoherent story and flat characters as “deep”: All because of a 4th-wall-breaking Ending E, a few heavy-handed references to certain philosophers, and loads and loads of melodrama. Ironically, some of these superfans who like to claim to have learned so much from this game engage in its defense with the same zealotry as the misguided YoRHa androids themselves. 😂
Nothing against you personally; I’m allowing my formed prejudice about these types of videos (based on prior experience) to guide me here and save me 30 minutes of watching time.

At this point, whenever a multi-paragraph comment begins with "At this point, whenever a video starts with 'NieR: Automata is one of the best games I've ever played", I just click away again immediately," I dismiss it immediately. Especially because all of these multi-paragraph comments really ought to be reworked into proper blog posts (at the very least) that properly *attempt* the same amount of work these 30+ minute-long videos receive to try and articulate nuanced thoughts about said video (or video game). Perhaps this comment actually contains anything relating to the actual video. But I've seen too much mindless wank-comments on RUclips and elsewhere and offline to give online commenters the benefit of the doubt at this point.
I hope that in the future more people who are critical of videos will have the courage and brain and time to make their own damn videos or at the very least a blog, without being afraid of being gunned down by actual creative workers who actually put effort into something significant instead of attempting to ride the coattails of complete strangers who *have* put in the work to make something both entertaining and maybe intellectually stimulating.
Nothing against this commenter personally; just that they admit to allowing their prejudice about these kinds of videos to waste everyone's time trying to read so much noise, even up to the point where they feel they need to edit their comment. And no, his proper-ish use of a semi-colon does not make his argument any better or worse, y'all just showing off.
