    Hey everyone! I don't usually make this type of video but events that have been recurring have started to irk me a little bit, so heres a sorta video essay about critique and how to give it.
    Thank you all for your amazing support on my videos so far, your lovely comments mean the world to me ❤

    A Summery of my points:
    • Critique is different from you opinion
    • It's based in rules such as the Elements and Principles of design
    • Different fields of art have additional rules/principles
    • Some of these rules can be broken depending on the situation
    • ALWAYS ASK BEFORE GIVING A CRITIQUE
    • Critiques in no way have to be paragraphs in length, keep it concise and to the point if that's what you prefer
    • Comparing how you prefer your food cooked and art critique doesn't really work

    This was so much needed at this current era of RUclips so THANK YOU ;w;
    I hope that this trend of "critics" starts to slow down. Critique is good and definitely needed to improve but if the critique is just the facade to present your own opinions claiming them to be critique then that's...not good for anyone :/

    Oh thank god you did this, this is put far more eloquently than how i could've put it. I'm studying animation in uni atm, we have critique sessions and they're always genuinely useful and not at all cruel. They make me feel like I'm actually learning something from my work and it gives me chance to improve in an environment that doesn't feel forced or hostile.
    Meanwhile, i find it's common in the animation meme community on youtube to make "critique" videos that are just... straight up being horrid. Targeting young animators who aren't 100% skilled in the art form yet, going after more popular people for the sake of being the one to ~knock them down a peg~, all of which is totally unwarrented and goes against the like, basic decent rule of "dont give critique unless it's asked for."
    I hope more people in the community look at this and realise how the current state of "animation meme critiques" isnt helping anyone in the slightest.

    • @RyeTaran
      @RyeTaran  5 лет назад +1

      Completely agreed! My college critique sessions were always interesting to see how people can approach the same subject but in different ways (especially when people thought a piece could be take in completely different directions haha) and I always loved my classmates pointing out things that I hadn't even noticed before in my own work
      Exactly! And it's absolutely wonderful to see young animators trying to get critiques but... those just aren't critiques... it just seems unhealthy to believe being cruel to someone is something that will help them grow when in actually it just riles people up :/

    This is far beyond a beautiful video that explains about what an critique and why it is important. I think this helps me out a lot more on how to give others advice and suggestions on what they improve on. Also, I would get a few countless negative opinions whenever I post art on Discord servers so that's where I usually now say, "Please do not critique or give feedback." I'm not sure if it's the right thing to say but I get heartbroken whenever I hear negative opinions. :/ This video gave out very interesting points and I'm so happy for it, too. I hope this gives people some thoughts on how critiquing is in the art field.

    • @RyeTaran

      Thank you so much!!
      Ouff, yea it's always hard to only hear the negatives :/ I don't personally partake in any critique discord servers (because I'm just intimidated by that many new people, haha), but I do always find it really helpful to create a healthy critique environment with my friends. Where we'll send each other things we're currently working on and ask for the other's thoughts. I often find that they're good at balancing both positives and negatives when it comes to giving critique and I always try to reciprocate the same!

    THANK YOU for making this, I see so many people that don't understand the difference between giving their opinion and actually criticizing something. I mean, sometimes harsh criticism can be helpful but just saying "this is terrible, i hate it" and not giving further advice isn't critique, it's just being rude.
    This actually reminds me of when I showed my art to a teacher of a school I wanted to go to and he just kinda...made fun of me and basically told me I had no idea how to draw correctly wich really crushed me. like...what kinda teacher does that?
    Anyway, The only point I kinda disagree with is the "you should only give critique with permission". In my opinion an artist should expect critique when posting something unless they explicitly state they don't want it, not the other way around. Anyone is free to ignore critique if they don't want it but that doesn't make the critique invalid.
    Other than that, this is a really good video, you explain all your points very clearly and it was overall an enjoyable and informtive watch, good job!
    (this came out way longer than I expected jsjdhj I'm sorry haha "^^)

    • @RyeTaran
      @RyeTaran  5 лет назад

      OH YEA BIG AGREED, that's honestly the part that bothered me the most was the constant retort of "omg you just cant take a criticism" when it clearly wasn't critique??
      WOW what??!?! That's so atrocious, with that kind of mentality why even go into art? Makes me think of any art teacher that sees a kid drawing with a "cartoon" or "anime" art style and instantly assume they wont get anywhere in art >:/
      An interesting thought, I can totally see the point of 'the internet is public and thus everyone should expect critique'. But I think what bothers me about it is it's too similar to the "you posted your work on the internet, so you should expect to have your work reposted/stolen". Perhaps the reason I believe critique should come with permission is more for the person attempting to give the critique than the person getting critiqued? If you were to just walk up to a stranger in the street and say that you love their hat, but their outfit doesn't go together, you just come of as rude, ya know? Thus your critique gets near instantly rejected, as opposed to if you asked first then the artist is going to be more open to what you have to say.
      It seems a bit complex of a topic, I still believe that it's only polite to ask first but I guess that's just my opinion, haha.

    • @FrancySketches
      @FrancySketches 5 лет назад

      @@RyeTaran Yeah, I can totally see your point! Asking for permission/making sure that the artist is ok with recieving critique is something I can get behind, expecially if the artist in question is young or is just doing art for fun.
      I think my issue is more with artists calling themselves professionals but then deflecting any kind of critique with "Well you didn't ask permission therefore it's invalid" (I actually used to look up to someone like that oh boy :,) ). Like...I get that even as a professional getting unprompted critique can be unpleasant but most of the tme it's coming from people who genuinely want to help and not just be rude.
      I kinda went on a tangent there oops....
      Bottom line, I think asking for permission is always a good thing to do, but on the other hand there's some people who go from "it's better to ask permission" to "Giving critique without permission is wrong and if you do it then your it's automatically invalid".
      I hope that made sense haha, I tend to ramble a bit sometimes 😅

    When you describe the 180 Rule I always think how in “Who’s the Real You?!” scenes the clones will fight and I always rely on the rule to help me decide who’s who. However, I have more fun with these scenes when the rule is broken and not even I can make out who’s the real one.

  • @cryptidgator

    One thing I will say is that if you someone does give you a critique that you disagree with, do not blow up on them. Doing so just makes you look like a terrible person. Just say you disagree and that's that. I've seen far too many people make big fiascoes over a little bit of critique.

    • @RyeTaran
      @RyeTaran  5 лет назад +2

      That's true, thankfully if a person says that they want critique /usually/ they're open to whatever response they get. But I think a number of the recent fiascoes have come from unsolicited/unasked for "critiques" and not so much from overreactions

The other side around though i just wish people were more willing to actually give critiques to my work even when i ask for them. maybe its an audience issue but i always try to reach out and show my art in other areas and lets just say.. discord servers! Do you have any thoughts on this?

    • @RyeTaran

      Thank ya!! I completely get what you mean, i guess some people can be intimidated to give critique :0 Discord servers sounds like a perfect way to do that, so well done on that point ^u^ Maybe some other online places as well like Deviantart groups? I'm pretty sure there are some dedicated to giving and getting critique? I'd hesitantly suggest the Amino apps but I've heard such mixed things about the mods (at least on the Warriors one) that I'm honestly not to sure about it...

    Great video! I think this is very important for people to know. However, I do disagree with the part where you should ask permission before giving a critique. I think there are a lot of artists out there that avoid receiving critiques because it can be very daunting and feel like a personal attack. I think it is just as important to know how to receive critique as it is to know how to give critique. I feel there are very few artists out there who don't want to improve their art and critiques can be a big part in finding what you struggle in. I think anything should be open to a discussion on how to improve. As a professional working in the animation industry, I know how hard it can be to receive critique on something you worked hard on and are proud of, but as artists we need to take a step back, breathe, and try to find value in what other people have to say about our art. Another important note to this is that, not all critiques are equal, as the creator of a work, only you know your real intent for the piece, so if someone says something that goes against what your intending for your own art, thats okay, try and see if its something that applies to you, and if not its okay not to apply the critique to your current work.
    I think most artists can tell when the proper time to give a critique is, and I hope this video helps in giving more thoughtful critiques on work when they do. Thanks for putting in the work to make this super helpful video! ❤

    • @RyeTaran
      @RyeTaran  5 лет назад +1

      There was actually another who had the same thought (that permission isn't necessary in this case) and it's gotten me really thinking about it.
      I completely agree that it's really important to know how to receive and digest given critique, but I'm not sure if just having it tossed at you unexpectedly is the way for people to learn how to do such (at least in terms of beginning artists). I think the environment in which critique is received (as well as who it's given by) can really effect how an artists reacts to critique. The difference between getting it suddenly in the streets by a total stranger versus in a gallery space with fellow artists. But I suppose in that context youtube would qualify more as a gallery space.... honestly it's a topic I'm still deliberating with myself about.
      Oh yes a good point!! (Not all critique's are equal) That's the sort of idea that I was trying to get across when I was critiquing my own piece for the 3-hour MAP, that after going through everyone I would probably only use about four of the points that I mentioned. Because it's exactly as you said: a creator is really the only one who knows what was intended with the work.
      I really appreciate your thoughts on the matter! Thank you!! (And thank you for enjoying the video~)
