there are 2 tf2 players in the eyes of spies, the ones who hear you decloak half a mile away, and then never stop chasing you and the ones where you can decloak with the dead ringer right behind them, and they're none the wiser
From now on every time i try to kill australium soldiers with l'etranger and die i will say to myself "you are the Spy class from Team Fortress 2" absolutely hilarious
The spycicle to me has always been a knife which I looked at with relative scepticism. After every stab I found myself wondering "What does this do that the stock knife couldn't have done?". And in the majority of cases, the answer was nothing. I sneak up on the guy, bathe my knife in his blood for a second, and then quickly retreat back to the safety of my cloak or die a horrible death to something I could've sworn wasn't behind me just a second ago. The only minor difference being is that I either got a ragdoll or an arguably cooler ice statue (each to their own). But sometimes I found myself saying "Ah, thanks spycicle!" when a rouge scorchshot happy pyro was spamming a chokepoint which I had to make a leap of faith through or when I caught the backend of a random flamethrower huff, the list goes on. And those small moments are what the spycicle is really about for me. It's not the knife to end my suffering against pyros, but it is a handy little tool, that allows me just that bit more to live, to maybe seconds later find myself behind enemy lines once more, with my knife ready and my eyes on the next victim.
To me, it definitely does something that stock doesn't: it allows me to win a close-quarters 1v1 against pyros (I'm not the best at movement, and extremely bad at trickstabs). Using the stock revolver (or diamondback but that feels cheap imo) you can, with proper aim, take down a pyro reliably by tanking a second or two of flames and after that quickly switching to spycicle for the second of complete immunity to fire damage, during which with the ridiculously high damage of the revolver you can kill the pyro (as long as you don't miss too much) and live with up to even half health remaining. To someone with only aim as a redeeming feature (me), it's a pretty major upside. In my opinion, gunspy doesn't get a better knife than the spycicle, and it's a lot of fun to catch pyros off-guard by randomly becoming immune to their main damage type mid-fight. And of course, the escape utility is a boon, too.
It’s absurd that the Spy-cicle used to share the Silent Killer trait with the YER. I mean you get statues, which is it’s own form of paranoia. I would love for it to help counteract other debuffs like milk or Jarate, but I enjoy it as is.
It's not absurd it's a very logical: you can be a silent killer but ice statues said the enemy that you're here. Another spy weapon that were destroyed by valve shitty balance (1 second fire immunity is not so useful against pyro who can track you). It's bot even a "crutch", you know, other classes have a lot of crutch weapon when spy not. Why ?
yo hintshot, last time i commented you gave me a heart and because of that ive been trying more as spy and i managed to get a 14 killstreak (last time was 9) and get spy as my main (i was a heavy main before)
I think the spycicle is pretty meh, since if you’re playing spy, you’re already risking your life for a chance at a good backstab (or multiple stabs). It’s often worth it to end up stabbing-say, a med that you were going for-instead of surviving with the fire resistance, if that even works considering other classes and pyros can still shoot you down.
Hey Hintshot. I hold your experience and opinions about spy in tf2 quiet highly. And I was wondering what your thoughts would be on a concept I have for an actual subclass for the spy. I have 2 working titles for it and it would bring 3 new unlocks to the spies arsenal “Jester” or “The distraction” subclass. In which it more heavily relies on disguises and causing distractions for the enemy team to be wide open for an attack The items would be A new knife I’m calling the hand shake. : Upon a successful backstab, you apply a heavy bleed to the target and you do not lose your active disguise. Upon stabbing a structure or building you instead place a shock charge on the object that can be remotely detonated when pressing R with the knife equipped. Detonating the charge will dead a small portion of damage, disable the building for only 4 seconds and removes 15% of the buildings resources. Such as ammo and healing. Nothing on specific stats for cloak or anything. A new watch that I’m calling the Hand of mirrors Cloak as normal however, upon cloaking it will send a clone of yourself and your current disguise forward in the direction your facing. A new slot to replace a sapper. That I am calling the Tactical Toss. It’s a type of grenade that can be thrown and it detonates on impact of any kind. Terrain or players or structures. It will stun all players in its radius for just 2 seconds including sentries. Throwing will not remove your disguise. I feel like these 3 weapons. Either together or on their own. Would be fun ways of having a different play style for the spy. From being sneaky assassin trying to get close and make picks. To sneaky trickster to help set up pics for the team. Leaning more into a support role than a lethal duellist. What do you think? (^ - ^) Additional mention is that I am not capable of making these things at all. It’s just a concept. XD
In the 3 hours since I wrote this I just came up with entirely new sets for the spy XD Something I would call Art Spy 1 new weapon for all 5 weapon slots New gun : Splasher Gun will always deal only 10 damage. Enemies hit by it will be blinded with paint based on the distance the shot traveled. Maximum of 4 seconds being blind. Lasts less time when up close. New Secondary : Abstract Canvas instead of placing a sapper on a sentry, you can place an Abstract canvas on an ally that makes them invisible to enemy sentries for only 3 seconds. Needs time to recharge before placing another. Only 1 ally at a time New knife : Elaborate touch A paintbrush that has a sharp handle tip. butter knifing still possible with the handle tip. Backstabbing will not kill the enemy, deal damage or remove your disguise. Successful backstab will apply your team paint changing the players team affiliation for 3 seconds. Letting them get targeted by sentries and take damage from friendly fire. If they die to friendly fire the kill gets contributed to you. New Watch slot : Invisible Ink Cannot be activated or used, much like boot unlocks for Soldier and Demoman. Upon a successful backstab, become invisible for 1.5 seconds. Downside : Backstab needs to be recharged OR you can only do it once every 10 seconds New Disguise kit : Environmental Pocket kit Disguise as a normal sized prop that is relevant to the map you playing on. Pressing R will still allow you to disguise as team mates.
And then ANOTHER one would be what I call the NURSE Spy. This idea came to me because i had realized that the SPY is a SUPPORT character that only ever INDIRECTLY supports the team and (most often than not) is not as useful as any other character with their support item. AND all other characters, other than Demoman, have unlocks that can provide far more support directly to their team. Heavy Sandvich, Mad milk, Jarrate, Short Circuit, Everything a Pybro can do, buff banners etc etc So what about a spy that can heal his teammates? So how about a spy that can Directly heal and support his team. To change his sneaky, infiltration play style into much more of a team player and playing closer with the team. New watch : The Guard NO cloak or invis. As it is active it absorbs damage to a maximum limit (not determined) If an ally is in a close enough range of the spy WHILE it is active then they will be healed for the damage stored. Much like a dispenser. Downside : If it absorbs too much damage and reaches its limit it will break, dealing damage to the spy and not be usable for 15 seconds or until recharged from ammo pick up. This is so that it cant be used selfishly to be invincible and for a spy to play Solo. If they take too much damage and dont let it heal allies, then they will end up doing more harm to themselves. Also you cant just hold it forever and it will stay active for only 6 seconds before running out of time. New Disguise kit : Only disguise yourself as an Ally. If you die (Or feign your death with dead ringer) then the ally you disguised yourself as will receive a single guaranteed crit.

Your gameplay and commentary fondly reminds me of Mueselk. Keep up the good work bro! 🙌
spycicle really needs to give a speed boost at the same time as the fire resistance so you can actually get away from the pyro thats shooting you
