lol What? No mention of the Picatrix?
Got anything Thelemic? Or in the Golden Dawn circle. AOS? Kenneth Grant?
@@jmp01a24nah, too new
All the books I make available for sale are also accessible digitally via archive.org, google books, etc.
I still maintain that this is one of the most important channels on you tube.
Many blessings!
The oldest book I own is a cookbook that is well over a hundred years old, compared to a modern cookbook it may as well be a piece of esoteric literature. I am so happy and so lucky to have it
This video reminded me of the movie The Ninth Gate (1999). A movie review from you on this would be nice. Also please do more movie reviews for the channel.
Totally! I was reminded of this great movie many times while watching Esoterica. :)
Why not video games, toys and wrestling reviews also? Pokemon cards? Scottish football would also be a good topic for thr channel.
@@Cross-Carrier all due respect, I think you're missing a couple things, but primarily that the channel does have a couple occult-themed movie reviews already. Granted, that was years ago, but still.
I don't know that I'd want more of that personally, it's not why I'm here, but it has precedent and is pretty strongly on-theme unlike everything else you mentioned.
@@SerenV11 I feel you missed my point actually. " Let's talk Religion " has reviewed Assassins Creed games and " Religion for Breakfast " has looked at Zelda and Pokemon.
I can only apologise as my sincerity can come across as being facetious. I appreciate your time.
You should read the book it was based upon: The Club Dumas. It goes into book collecting and many other things you may be interested in.
I like that you regularly have a pop at Brill.
Because their prices are so unreasonably high that they almost give piracy some kinda legitimacy.
Not almost. Definitely.
Walking into a room filled with these books is akin to heaven…🔥🌹
This is a brilliant idea!
As I am at the end of my PhD on historical magic, these are out of my range for the present. But I hope that you continue to do this in years to come!!
That sounds baller.
What country is that?
Nothing like that here in the phillipines.
@@tyranidswarmlord9722 Hi! I'm in the history department. I specialize int he history of magic. I imagine that you could do this at most university's where at least one professor specializes in magic or an adjacent subject (you might be able to study alchemy under a historian of science, necromancy under a historian or religion, etc).
I did my maters in Canada and my PhD in England. The University of Exeter has a masters program in Esotericism and Occult Sciences. The University of Amsterdam, South Carolina, the University of King's College, etc all have majors, minors, or grad programs specializing in it too.
The Ninth Gate, one of my favorite movies!
thank you for this book catalog it is amazing
Pitch: QVC for Magical Texts and Amulets
Enormous congratulations on 500k subscribers - every one is more than well deserved!
hell yea brother
Awesome-😮-surely one of the best channels yet.
i wash dishes, some of these are in the price range of "tax return gift to myself my girlfriend will be mad at me for" but most of them are just totems of my own slumbering envy. That said omg!!! I desperately want some Old Books!!!
Wanted to say thanks for making these videos. I've enjoyed them immensely and they are a great source for topic and research start points.
May the rest of your year be blessed.
You are in good company when it comes to the Fall. I love spring and fall the best The color alone makes it worth living.
Beautiful books.
Ohhhh I know what I'm putting on my Christmas wish list outta Sledge's curated works...
Thanks Dr. Sledge, I and probably many others are thankful for this opportunity from someone who's well educated and aware of the content and history of these books.
i'm a christian and bought and sold some books on ebay and have seen occult old rare books up for sale whole collections one at a time many bidders a lot of money.
Thanks,Dr. Sledgehammer on the rock sledge!
Dr Sledge, I have inherited a leather bound copy of The Works of Josephus, 1673 fully illustrated with a beautifully calligraphic signature - Jeremiah Harman - as well as a bookplate inscribed ‘Nihil Sine Labore’, library of John Cator. I’m so excited!
1683, sorry - Roman numerals are not my strong point!
Wonderful - congrats!
I came across your reponse to a video on Valentinism in Christianity. I was intrigued so I am going to view your content. Subscribing 😊
Ooh an antique book lover. Ok. I'm hooked. 😂
I have a library full of old books, ranging from cook books to occult books.
Two of my favorites are The Human Comedy 32 book Volume and Vincent Princes Cook book.
This was awesome, thank you.
Can you make a shelf tour video? What are those 3 golden boxes for example?
Japanese puzzle boxes
He made one, it's in the live section.
Uh...I don't think so
@@TheEsotericaChannel could have sworn I watched a shelf tour from awhile ago. maybe it was some other video with a look at few books on your shelf.
Oh a shelf tour ! Yes, thought you were talking about the puzzle boxes !
Hear that Brill! Life is truly bizarre!
I'm not able at the moment to consider one of the marvelous books (trying to imagine the scent such a well-traveled tome would exude!) so instead I fixated on your page holder. Are those the feet of a cat or the many tentacles of a cthonian horror? Or possibly a cross between the two (shivers with delight). I want it either way, and am consoling myself solely with the thought it's probably a naked female instead, which would be dull and uninteresting by comparison. Thanks so much for the many fascinating hours I have spent listening to you explain things I never thought of before; it's truly been wondrous to touch such a fascinating world even this distantly. Going to get myself a Clerical Necromantic Underground shirt in consolation because that's all the super-coolness I can access today.
❤❤❤❤❤😮fascinating.. it feels like all those fantasy novels i read..werent even as fantastic as reality.. what a magical world we live in.. just sad all those. millions people are on tictoc intead of expanding their mind😢
Sadly, the best I've managed was when I had a first edition of Peter J. Carroll's Lieber Null. ;)
I just had to purchase a Brill text for my upcoming M.Div. semester. Thank you for the continued giggles at Brill’s expense. 😏
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 brother from Saint Louis
Amazing...
I wish I had some money to spend on treasures like this at present. I have wanted an Aramaic bowl inscription ever since I found out about them junior year of high school. As it is, I only have some very minor bits of archaeology, some nice numismatic finds, and some artsy modern occult/esoteric books from The Society for Esoteric Endeavour...and a few Brill book, too, that were often more expensive than the latter (and not as interesting!). One day...!?!
Hi, very interesting content! Im not sure if you already made content on The Golden Ratio, Sacred Geomtry, Quadrium and Trivium, etc., I think it would be interesting as well. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Wow!! From Paracelsus to Pseudo-Dionysius!! 🎉 📖 📚 The Aramaic fragment! 🎉 🥣 📜! Of course, the Cicero tome on Divination and the Gods! Quite reasonable for their age, actually! I might've guessed much more! Even though out of my reach just yet! But not so much they can't be wishlisted!
Can you do a video on your most prized possessions?
Dear Dr. Sledge,
Could you kindly suggest a book on avoiding reincarnation, please?
Your guidance is well appreciated.
So relic'd guitars are a thing. What about relic'd reprints of these old books? Could there be a market for that?
Dear Dr. Justin Sledge,
Here is an apology I owe you as one of my favorite educators… I love what you do im sorry that my comment about Mishima was purely based upon him but I’m 44and have been reading Mishima and Burroughs and Gysin and Crowley since I was a in 7th grade so… I’m not objective and have biases.. my bias was in the comparison of Mishima to Lord Byron I am I will assume the behaviors of the individuals don’t inform your interest from now on.. and if I didn’t take anyone beyond the shield society Mishima and into consideration in discourse was my misstep.. so I apologize for being an ass . I hope we can still move through interlocution and still maintain dialogue.
The books remaining is a small miracle, as was each person who protected them at immense peril at times.
Hello Dr. Sledge. I have been watching your channel on and off since you started. I recently discovered my grandfather’s grandfather was a Swedenborg, but I don’t know much about it. I know this tradition falls under Western Esotericism, and was wondering if you could make a video about it if you haven’t already? Thanks!
I heard you were going to possibly do another video on Qabalah? I really have in interest in Binah the 3rd!
I would love to get some but I'm on the low end of cash.
I wonder what the meaning of that symbol is next to esoterica, the hand holding a (looks like a fish). Is that the symbol for esoteric?
😅Hello Doctor .have you ever done anything video or otherwise on the Greater Key of Solomon.ive been studying myself for a long time.and would love to hear your take on it.
There really isn't anything such as the "Greater Key"
@@TheEsotericaChannel thank you for replying to my comment .
It’s sad that the age we are in has so few people who are interested in the occult you would think NOW would be the time that the fire of interest would be in full kindle but I guess tic tok is more important
Oh my gosh , i would need a 2nd full time salary just for old -ancient-classic -sacred - occult books 🙃
Hey yall,
I don't have the means to donate to the patreon rn but I have a burning question that requires some hyper-specific knowledge about primary sources. Does anyone know about any firsthand accounts of dwarf encounters from the early medieval to Renaissance periods? I speak English and German fluently and I'm willing to translate from Latin but I'm finding it extremely difficult to find anything about dwarves on modern Google that doesn't immediately relate to Tolkien or Norse literature. I'm specifically interested in historical dwarf encounters from that period that occur while mining. Thank you to anyone who might take the time to answer.
My only regret is being dirt poor. Hopefully one day I'll just be dirty.
And despite not having money, it guts me that someone got their hands on 1749 Textbook on Ghosts & Vampires. It feels like a kick to the stomach.
I'm sure I'll find another one at some point and maybe by then you can get it
What do you think about the early works of the Order of Nine Angles?
Fascist nonsense
@@TheEsotericaChannel Well, that's sad to hear. The Order of Nine Angles are not fascist, they are not even political to begin with.
The reason they are perceived this way in the general public is because they say that, to achieve alchemical change in yourself and the world around you,
you must indulge in practical actions that absolutely go against your own morals and what you stand for ('insight roles').
This is the reason why some followers of the Sinister Tradition joined extremist political groups, mainly but not exclusively right-wing, to challenge their own
empathy. Also, the O9A promotes destruction of those groups from the inside out.
There is a lot more than meets the eye in regards to the O9A, to simply stamp it off as 'fascist nonsense' is, in my humble opinion, very shallow.
Obviously, you are absolutely entitled to your opinion here. I just thought that someone so invested in occult knowledge and history would have a more
nuanced view on their magical systems, the seven-fold way and tree of Wyrd.
Im a book collector and yes, as long as the Beill titles printed till 1930 are expensive and its kinda understable, i dont understand why new Brill printings are so expensive..
They basically print and price for institutions especially university libraries.
Thats right but anyway..
Would books written for Fabian Societies in the 1800's qualify as Esoteric ? I have boxes of them, left from an old Aunt.
The Venn diagram is definitely a circle 😂
Y’all
do you scan the books?
No, long since digitized
How much you spend on books each year? Roughly? I would assume it's not a bad investment either, as most of these books only increase in value over time....
More than I should, less than I want to
@@TheEsotericaChannel 😆 Well said!
I'll never be able to afford any of these books, 😂.
Yeah I was excited till I saw the price lmao 😭
I thought I was cool with my 1960s edition of Dante 😭😭
These books being cool doesn't make you not cool too
🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉
Whats bogus os modern grimoires their still trying to charge antique prices for books not even 10 years old 🤬
