Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada. I am originally from the Island of Newfoundland on Canada's east coast, where the pitcher plant is the Provincial Flower...I remember seeing these alot in boggy areas. a nice reminder of home. Your pond is well done, very Pretty. Thanks for your videos, they are an inspiration for this Plant Junkie... Cheers from across the pond.
I stopped watching RUclips over the last many weeks.... since early spring. So tired of all age politics and lies and and covid and the depressing narrative. It was leaving me very upset. Anyway, a couple or three weeks ago, I needed something positive to lift my spirits. I cancelled all the news channels ... bar one or two neutral facts only ones, and a couple of bloggers, but all the gardeners I loved over the years remain. I am so very pleased I made the choices I did.. I am so happy to have watched your post this morning! It will be a beautiful fall weekend here on the Canadian prairies and I will be in my garden putting it to bed! I happen to have a number of galvanized steel planter liners from a trading site, sitting taking up space in my garage! I think I will adopt your vision and place them out in the garden and next spring they will be ready to bring new life to neglected corners. They will freeze solid over the winter! but I can overwinter some plants in an in ground pond, or the garage! Thank you for the inspiration and just for being good for my spirits.
Lovely, I sank a large plastic reservoir partially into the ground but as the rear of it is next to a camellia bush I raised the soil at the back so it’s level for wildlife to climb in , bricks and gravel at the bottom to provide habitat for creatures, plants have grown well so as my garden borders fields and I have steep bankings which get a bit wild and overgrown in summer I’m sure to get frogs or toads laying in it, but no 3 years on not a single tadpole, so maybe small fish may be the answer, I would be interested to know what variety you eventually buy. I did enjoy watching you create your pond and look forward to updates .
Blimey it’s you!! WOW I used to watch your channel regularly years ago but then for some reason YT stopped showing me when you upload and I haven’t seen one in what seems an eternity. Anyhoo this has just showed up whilst I was watching something totally unrelated (yea good job RUclips) so here I am again after all this time. Great video, love the pond. PS if you want some power down there you should have a look into the EcoFlow or Bluetti LiFePO4 battery systems. You could stick a 200w solar panel on your shed roof and then just hook up to the solar battery and you would have pretty much unlimited 240v and 12v power for anything you need such as bubblers, pumps, lights, even boiling an electric kettle for a brew.
Love this! I have a passion for plants and ponds. Besides several ponds and a bathtub pond outdoors, I have a pitcher plant indoors and I think I will try planting it in lava rock as you have done to give it more hydration. Currently I have it sitting in a plate of pebbles with water but this is a wonderfl idea! Thank you for sharing.
Awesome pond, can't wait to see how it progresses over the years. Not sure if it's just me but I swear you look even happier than usual in this video, what a pretty smile!
Aww, thank you. I was just super excited to get my pond made. Once I get set on an idea I’m so impatient and impulsive that I just have to get it done 😆
Hey , just come across your channel now , laid up with injured ankle ,just as soon as I bout my own first plastic greenhouse .....typical lol. Looking forward to seen your videos and watching . I'm in South east Ireland so only across the pond.
i love this! so beautiful, and thoughtful. please keep us updated over the different seasons. i don’t have any outdoor space right now but i would love to do this when i have.
What a great job, I was surprised to see all the plants you were putting in a fairly small tank, but in the end it all looked very pleasely balanced. We have a ground level pond for years now. We first had some plants and fish, the raccoons took the fish rather quickly. Fast forward, we now only have a water pump and water fountain for circulation. I love your plants and look forward to seeing your efforts evolve. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Looks Great ! Consider raising the air pump above water level , This will make it more powerful and also the pump will last longer as its not under as much stress.
Lovely concept thank you for sharing I am across the pond in the USA . I am setting up my first patio pond. I have three bog garden housing all carnivorous plants each spring the blooms are amazing. 😚⛲🌿🌿🌿
I have just taken the surface temperature of my tank pond which was 26C - 15.38 on 14/08/22. There is no way I can shade the pond and I have had great problems with blanket weed this year and as the pond sits in full sun for most of the day, it's not surprising and possibly I should think of a different regime. It has been a great success for the last four years and the pond plants grow really well. I shall probably follow your new pond ideas so I will follow your progress with interest. Thank you for yet another charming and informative video.
That’s really cool, I might try something like that next year. Looking forward to seeing what type of fish you put in. As a kid, I was always fascinated by looking at pond life through a microscope, as an old guy now, I always think about taking up that hobby again. This would be a great source for microscopic critters.
Did the same in a plastic tub on my patio. Was amazed yesterday to find a frog in it. Thanks for the rock idea. Going to give it a go, but will have to change out the tap water, if it ever rains again.
Hello! Very fascinating!! It will be fun to watch it naturalize as everything grows and settles in, and then after you add fish, too! Thanks for sharing this project!! Happy gardening and have a wonderful day!
I'm fascinated by the insectivores too. I've seen the video with the pumice stone - it's an interesting channel. I have sundew in a couple of indoor terrarium jars and a couple of Sarracenia in another container . My pride and joy was a Nepenthes in a large jar with other insectivores. You can see the pitcher size in the thumbnail. A beauty! I tried talking to the camera as I repotted it on its own: tried cutting off a pup plant that it had produced and...mistakenly cut the main plant's stem! I am now nursing the baby plant since the parent died. Have you ever heard of butterwort being grown at home? I see them weekly during hikes (in Scottish highlands) but resist taking one from the wild. Best of luck with your projects!...Terry
Thank you, however I’m cautious about using it as the carnivorous plants probably wouldn’t like that. They really do need rain water only, fussy things 😆
Years ago I ve had a summer pond for my turtle on my roof garden. It was filled with gravel and I ve had strong grasses and Iris in baskets / pots. It became too hot , couldnt controle the algues. Although I ve cleaned and refreshed the water. ( With a turtle its necessary) . I just have an insect and bird bath instead nowadays. But I really like your water project, especially the plants in the lava . You have more shadow ... I hope dragon flies will settle down there.
i'm going to use this for botanical reference! although my pond would be home to several mollies. and i'd be using a solar submersible pump, not an aerator, for water surface agitation. much gratitude from the Philippines
How will the plants, especially the carnivorous ones manage in the cold? I really like the depth and size of the container. It is just right. Will be lovely when things flower and start to spread x
Wonderful project Katrina and a brilliant piece of inspiration for anyone building a smaller type of water feature. The textbooks would have us believe a pond shouldn't be any smaller than 2x3 metres . Portable too when drained down enough to lift and keep the fish alive.
Your pond looks gorgeous 👍 Inspired by your wildlife pond I've build one pond as well. Once you have one, you get addicted to it 😂 Now I have two ponds and another plant is sitting in a rain barrel and waiting for the third pond. This Sagittaria sagitttifolia is so beautiful 🤗 I think it would fit very nicely in there 😉
I just love this video and what you have done with that water tank! Here in South Africa, i have to wait until September to be able to get some carnivorous plants from the nursery. I have a beautiful `spongy` rock i picked up on the beach to use for the pitchers i plan to buy. Thank you for that wonderful tip. My small wildlife pond will be so beautiful this year. I just love all your video`s Katrina, greetings from Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Interesting video! BTW, in addition to providing O2, the pond plants will suck-up excess nutrients produced by the fish, which will reduce algae growth and help to keep the water clear. And the roots provide a great habitat for juvenile fish to hang out.
Hello Katrina, What a fun video! I loved all the smiles you had as the video went along. What an amazing result. With all the careful thought and preparation along with trial and error you finished the project 100% successful. The pond looks and sound amazing the quite sounds of nature are so calming. I am so so happy for you. I will be looking for the follow ups and the fish moving in. Thank you so very much for this video. Your video do make such a difference for so many people that may not otherwise experience this type of nature please know your are truly appreciated by so many folks. Take care we will see you on the next video Steven
Hey Steven! Thank you so much for your kind words. This video too a lot longer to shoot and edit than my usual so it’s worth while knowing how much it’s enjoyed and found useful by those who watch. I hope you are keeping well! See you on the next one 🙂
hi Katrina your pond looks great with your work and your plote looks great with the grass paths look forward to seeing your next video take care of yourself and stay safe
What a cool project! I would not dream of doing something like this, but you might have inspired me to give it a go... I need to find a spot for it first 😅
That looks really nice with a generous plant selection - you have built it beautifully. I am a bit concerned about having fish in it. It is quite small for most fish which can grow quite big, also much of that space is taken with rocks and bricks etc. I imagine it would get very hot in the summer and cold in the winter because it is above ground and made of metal. Perhaps that is worth checking out with a fish expert.
I’ve done my research and the fish I plan to grow only reach 3cm in length and much like the goldfish survive winters. The tank is in shade most of the day and I’m currently keeping a close eye on the temps of the water. If we have a harsh winter (doesn’t happen much anymore) I can easily move the tank into the polytunnel.
If I were doing this, I would have said "Nah, the tank is too small", but, hey, it works. Great job !

For a non gardener . I thoroughly enjoy this site .
Thanks for being here!

I don’t remember you having mentioned your engagement or ever seeing your beautiful ring! Congratulations 🥂
I LOVE those lava rock bowls! So natural looking. Well done. An idea i need to borrow
Polyurethane pond seal.... Hmmm. This might solve a problem I have. Thanks for sharing the product!
What an absolutely cracking job you've made of that....the airpump makes the pond come alive , I could stare at it for hours on a recliner 👌

Love your new pond. Incorporating carnivorous plants is a new idea for me,I never would have thought to use them the way you have!A good idea.
Wow encore une belle vidéo bravo 😉
A bientôt 👍

Such a beautiful idea Katrina. Looks amazing. Many congratulations on your engagement too, such lovely news!!
Thank you 🥰
I definitely think there should be a frog naming competition. I would like to nominate Jeremiah for the frog.
😆 love it
i love this! so beautiful, and thoughtful. please keep us updated over the different seasons. i don’t have any outdoor space right now but i would love to do this when i have.
You could do a small indoor pond, or riparium tank
Very nice!

Perfectly done! Very impressed with the pump and solar panel kit, well done Katrina! 👌A message for your fiancé: You're a lucky man mate 😉

I love this! It looks great. I created a "patio pond" this summer and it has been such a joy - and having fish out there is so fun!

Such an enchanting new feature for your garden. Love it.
I’m inspired to do this at my place. Thanks Katrina.
Nicely done I have a water garden for around 20 years very relaxing to watch and another venue for plants👨🌾
congrats on your engagement you two

Just loved listening to you... looks great and I will make the lavaplants.. thx
Such a wonderful project. Interesting looking pond plants. Good job.

Very pretty. I really like this.
So lovely 🥰
Looks wonderful, great job! It’ll be lovely when that water lily flowers too 🙂
Yes! I’m so excited to see it flower 🌸
Oh great job! Thank you. Well done!
Great video!
Having fun is hard. Great job
Hi your pond looks great. If you’re going to use tap water to top up you can get tap water safe from your local pet shop it works really well
Thank you, however I’m cautious about using it as the carnivorous plants probably wouldn’t like that. They really do need rain water only, fussy things 😆
I have been watching a lot of pond videos .. finally one that really inspires me, I love it❣️

What a lovely job, so much thought and attention to detail! Gorgeous! 🌀🌳
I love how thoughtful you are about chemicals and wildlife. I'm the same way
How will the plants, especially the carnivorous ones manage in the cold? I really like the depth and size of the container. It is just right. Will be lovely when things flower and start to spread x

Absolutely love this! Thank you for the idea of using a solar oxygenator. My metal wash tub pond needs this addition next year.😊
Just put a Belfast sink pond in so looking for tips!
Stupendous!
that pond is so nice! i want to to make one now for the little frog who has been living behind my AC unit for a year now :)

Just lovely looks great you do need your air pump higher than the water to stop it siphoning back through the pump.
Love it! Great job Katrina 💚

Fab job, Katrina! Love it!
Looks fantastically relaxing. Great project.
Very beautiful little project
I love it! It will be so relaxing to sit near! 🪷🪷🪷
It really is! 😌
So inspiring... thanks young lady👌
Nice! I've always liked sun dews though I don't know why. I think it's the way the light hits them. Good project.
turned out really nice! I know you will enjoy it.
What a cool project! I would not dream of doing something like this, but you might have inspired me to give it a go... I need to find a spot for it first 😅
I love it! The plants are lovely and I can’t wait for the fish.
Really well done, and very helpful.
Thanks Bill!
I loved this pond! It inspires me to do something similar. I’ll have to start looking for a suitable vessel.
great job
That turned out great! Looks amazing!
It is beautiful
Great idea. I’d love something like this. Thanks for the inspiration x
Super creative project. Fantastic.

Would be very interested to know how the carnivorous plants are managing. I want to put these exact ones on a floating pot on my pond.
I love your pond, good job. I think I'd like to try one too.
