Hello Fellow Wood Workers! I had a great time making this video because I got to teach my daughter, Annabelle, some Woodworking 101. Let me know if you enjoy this kind of content-it’s a bit different from my usual style. And hey, do you ever share your love of woodworking with family or friends? I’d love to hear about it!
I'm fortunate enough to have a 14 year old niece who enjoys woodworking so we have many weekends (summer weekends) building various projects - cars, planes, tic-tac-toe boards and a planter for her Mom for Mother's Day. Whenever I've taught anyone about using power tools, it's always been 'safety first' and to have respect for the tools, not fear them. So far so good! Thank you for the great videos!
@@standishwoodstoryI normally teach 'on the job' with the alternate words 'coach and instruct'. It is a world full of teaching moments if we are just paying attention and help others in the right ways. Glad you could spend some time passing along to your daughter! Hopefully she'll want another piece, and she already knows where to go for it too!
Great video, Winnie! That is a cool project and I love that she wants to learn about woodworking. This was such an entertaining video. She is a natural! 😂 And you two look more like sisters than mother-daughter. 😎 Teaching your kids how to use tools is both rewarding and fun. You should make more videos like this together. Great job by both of you!
Looks like you both had a great time. I liked this video as it was very entertaining and I liked the out takes😂. Such a great way to spend time with a loved one.
I have taught my son some things in the shop...starting at age 29...He had very little experience with machines with blades before and it was nerve racking to watch him learn, even though he's naturally extremely cautious. I hope to have him acquire some more training hours soon, he wants to make a desk...LOL
Winnie, It's always fun when I get involved in a project with my Son, but last night I worked with My Grandson on a project which we completed. That was a blast! So I understand where your coming from. Nice shelf. Thanks for Sharing! 🙃🙂
@@standishwoodstory We built a kit toy car made out of wood, plastic wheels and an electric motor. When done we ran it all around our house bouncing off walls, doors, furniture and people. The dogs managed to stay out of the way. It was a blast although I think we wore the tiny gears out. That's OK, there were five projects in the collection I bought.🤣😂🙂🙃 We'll build another one!
What a great story and project. My kids are still young, but I'm excited when they can come out into the shop and actually work with me in a meaningful way.
My wife had zero woodworking experience, but wanted to build a spice rack to hang on the pantry door. So she did the measuring and the design in Sketchup, and we had enough scrap lumber to do the project. I showed her how, but she did all the cutting with the jig and table saw, and the assembly and finishing with paint, then attaching it to the door. It looks and works great. I'd show a picture, but don't know how or if I can attach it here.
Dejligt at se jer arbejde sammen. Det plejer at være faderen, der lærer hvordan man laver møbler, men sjovt du kan det❤️ Nu har hun et fint møbel, som I har lavet sammen. Glæder mig til at se det til næste år❤️
What a great project. Woodworking with my 14 year old grandson has been a pure joy. He reminds me of what got me into woodworking in the first place. Our most recent project was a version of your Halloween lamps.
Sweet story. My mom and dad both taught me a lot about refinishing furniture... So lots of sanding, painting and staining wood. My dad also taught me how to build picture frames. I helped him build a jig for 90° clamping. That was long before you could buy a 90° clamp for $10. Good memories.
Great video! I really enjoyed watching this special bonding project with you and your daughter. My daughter is 6 and we sometimes do small projects together. It’s really a joy to share this hobby with others. 😊
That is very nice to hear that your 6 year old already loves working with you, what kind of stuff do you make? I had a hammer set when I was around that age and it’s amazing what little kids can do (with a responsible parent nearby of course :)
I love this project! My dream is for my son (or anyone) to ask to build something with me. He’s only 11 but super fascinated with the bandsaw so I completely understand your hesitation with the power tools
It is super cool to build with my kids but also takes a lot of patience - I’m sure you’ll have an opportunity soon! A scroll saw (if you have it) may be a good starting point before the bandsaw but we all have our different comfort zones and for good reasons.
Was just looking through the Lee valley catalog and you video came up, what to do, of course I rushed over from Instagram, looking forwards to this Edit what a great video, loved it
You are blessed, my kids have never shown any interest in learning and working in the shop, once in a while my son will talk about it, he's only 11, so there is time, he likes to come to the shop with me but he just plays on the phone and doesn't help me in the shop.
Thank you, I agree I am blessed, I’m sure your son will take an interest as well at some point, perhaps not yet but one day, it helps when THEY want something they have to build ;)

Teach? Yes. Enjoy? Yes.
That’s wonderful, where or who do you usually teach?

Thank you for the kind feedback, much appreciated! Maybe it will be an annual mother daughter weekend to build :)
So much fun and memories she will always treasure! She had a wonderful teacher, thanks for sharing!!
My pleasure, it was a fun project but I’m not sure I’ll ever be a fan of working with veneers - I prefer when I can sand down my mistakes 😂

We sure did have a great time ❤️

I hear you! It is scary to watch them learn but also so rewarding when they do what they set out to.
What a cool twist to your woodworking videos....nicely done by you two!!
Thank you very much!

Awesome video, it looks like you have a budding woodworker on your hands. I also appreciated your daughters shout out to New York!
I sure do :) I’ll let her know the shout out was well received.
That was adorable - thank you
You are so welcome, thanks for watching

That is awesome, love hearing that. Feel free to send it to me via email instead info@standishwoodstory.com
I am your daughter.
Slightly hesitant but mostly confident in the outcome.
Taking anyone’s candy.
Learning, always looking to learn.
lol candy stealers all around 🍬

Edit what a great video, loved it
Thank you 😊
Very nice. I too, would love it if kids or grandkids would take an interest, if nothing else, so I have someone to leave my shop to.
Hopefully one of them will one day ❤️
shes so lucky she has access to that shop.
She’s a lucky kid :)

Nice video! Why not use a dado stack to cut the grooves instead of a router and template.
You absolutely could but I still don’t own one - it’s on my wish list 😉
Where is the wood shed? I need some candy.
The WoodShed is located in Smithville, Ontario, Canada, here is a preview if you want to check them out, which I highly recommend! woodshedlumber.com/
Made the long drive to smithville. The wood shed did not disappoint. The only problem was limiting my spending! Thanks for sharing.
@@joes3266I should have prewarned you, it’s hard to leave that place without spending quite a bit $$$ 😂😂😂 glad that you were able to check it out 😊
Do your edge banding before you assemble, 1000x easier
Uhhhh good idea, thanks for the advice had no idea!
I really couldn't tell who the mom or daughter was
We have a 25 year age gap between us but I truly do appreciate the compliment ❤️😉
