Cheers y’all. This tune isn’t new and I recorded this back in 2013 for my last DVD. So actually its quite old. I wrote this song to showcase the difference in feel between double strokes and singles at the same tempo.
Those your A-21's or standard A's? I'm just curious about pedal settings for the happy medium for both techniques. Or maybe you're just powering through with all that manliness.
Interesting. This is the first time I've seen Derek use the heel-toe technique. At this point I think there's very few drummers left who only use single strokes for fast double bass, George Kollias is the first that comes to mind.
The reason I wrote this song and played both singles and doubles is to showcase the difference in “feel” between the 2 techniques. Ironically I usually only use double strokes for slower bass drum parts not fast ones. Singles feel much more on top on the music and I like that for faster playing.
@@DemonizedTX You do realize doubles have been around a lot longer then 2013, right? Could just be the phrasing if your comment, but it "comes off" as you implying that was abnormal for then.
Derek man, thank you so much ! I'll never ever forget the first time I heard your work on Nile. Its probably why I will be a lifelong extreme metal fan. We're so indebted to you man *bows*
@@DerekRoddyDrummer doing better after a rough 2018 health-wise and ready to get back to drumming. I might try 20" kicks after Mike Arcane told me he uses them and for the idea from you.
Derek ur awesome! U still got that speed. I'd really love it if you'd cover a song or two from I, Monarch. Also another jazzy groove vide would be awesome. I use to alternate my favorite drummer when I was younger all the time lol. U and George and Tim yeung and a couple others lol. Recently I've really loved ur work again and Tomas haake. I'd kill to see u cover a meshuggah song. Anyway, keep it up Derek!
@@DerekRoddyDrummer I know, I saw them, in fact I watched them today. The faceless one cover is awesome. All of them are. But I wanna see a modern one lol. Not making demands lol just a fan. I wanna see a clear sounding cover of to know our enemies. Bad ass songs u wrote on I Monarch. I keep watching late night sci-fi over and over on ur modern drummer video. Love it. And I love ur work. Derek, I remember I thought Joey Jordison was the fastest , and then I found u and thought ur videos were sped up lol. Been watching u for years. Keep it up derek
I cannot get over how you place your index finger straight out on your left hand when you blast dosint that hurt ?! Haha, i get everybody had their own technique but its very unique..i dont think ive seen any other extreme drummers do that
I'm a huge fan of Derek! Only I have to be honest that there were parts that were a bit sloppy.. expecially with the heel toe technique, sorry! (and ofcourse I can't do any better haha)
Wicked video. Loved seeing you use heel-toe. Can I ask what your max/optimal double-bass speed is - in both singles and heel-toe? Furthermore, do you plan on recording really fast material again? (E.g. 250-range, double-bass and blast beats?). Thanks. :). P.S. Just wanted to say been following you since '04 and one of my first/main extreme metal inspirations and love everything you've put out.
Hey man, I have never really known what my max is....it kinda comes and goes. Depending on what type of projects I'm doing. Right now I have no issues playing 16ths at 250+ singles or doubles because I'm playing full time in a band that requires it sometimes. I find myself asking the other members where they are and we all stay in a tempo that we can actually play in. Makes a big difference and sound and our tightness together. If you're looking for some faster stuff from me go to iTunes and get my Serpents Rise releases. Got some of the fastest stuff Ive ever recorded.
@@DerekRoddyDrummer. Thanks for prompt reply. Already got the releases; they're amazing, especially the first one. And you did some really cool non-metal projects which conveys the most important ingredient in 'ANY' form of music: creativity. Through the vacuum of homogenised music that is the one key thing, especially, in EM, that you possess which is why you're one of the intelligent and creative drummers and it's not all about how f***ing fast you can play - IT'S MUSIC! Not a sport. Sometimes the two get lost. Cheers, man. :)

@@Lupine. those are the 21s. Beater angle around 45, VDL about half or a little more toward head and spring maxed down. Pretty standard I’d guess 🤘🏼
Thank you all for the kind comments!
Damn. Those alternating singles and doubles are FLAWLESS. Christ man
Derek's gotta have one of the tightest blast beats in metal
very fuckin awesome. gotta love roddy. single foot blasting like a boss. spaffing everywhere.
Holy shit, pleeease keep making this music and pleeease keep uploading videos like this. We love you.

Fuck yes!! Thanks for uploading the songs to spotify Derek ❤️
are you nils' relative?
The drum sound reminds me of old school Death in the human era. Love the sound and the drumming is very fast, yet very tasteful. Very good!

This sounds sick! You are one of the few drummers who are able to add feel and swing at these tempos. Cheers and Happy New Years.
