He is definitely a National Treasure! Learned so much from Derek Roddy. Since I was 16 years old. Now at the age of 33, debating if should purchase a new double pedal lol 😂
Derek, regardless of what head they’re going to play on--I hope that they understand to have their drum heads tightened up so they get that bounce to increase their speed and their endurance while playing the fast stuff…. And your grip on the drumsticks has always been so controlled I remember you putting your pointer finger on the left hand stick to have control while you were playing but during your drum rolls you would pull that finger back and let the drums have it….😮❤😮😊😊😊😊
Also the angle that the tom is mounted will have some effect on attack. I like em pretty much just like you have here. too much angle and you lose the attack. I like a flatter snare for the same reason.
I've been trying to tell my students this forever......but they still seem to want to believe the marketing ploys of famous drum brands...... Thank you Mr Roddy
Outstanding explanation! Thank you for finally getting this message out there because I hear that questions a lot from drummers and tell them what you just explained. Cheers!
I still remember that solo from 15 years ago when just with the snare changing grip at very high speed, that snare roll, with the double bass kicking, and the snare changing tone, sick, was a big deal for me, I recorded it on casette, even thou i'm not drummer and never was hahahha good to see you kicking man, mad respect (Derek Roddy drums video 05 here on RUclips, wasnt the same technique you explain here I think but still sick)
Wow. 1st time, I agree, but not fully with Derek! Lol the hand grip and how you hit the toms/snare do obviously make a difference but when I use "fast toms" which are just shorter toms but still regular size 10-16" they make a difference. More attack and faster sound still full but can hear each hit. I really like them. Harder to tune though for sure but when tuned right, magic. Lol idk. He's right though. So idk I do both. Hand grip and fast toms.
Yes. I also get in this loophole of "well, if I had better equipment....." but no. Sure it'll help in some cases. But it's down to you, the player and ur ability.
I told you when we were in school that you're the best ... fast forward to now & see if I was right .. don't worry I see 😊😊 Where are the teachers today ? .. bless ya
And yet... Having better equipment may make a huge difference in terms of motivation: It can be much more fun having GOOD stuff and may make you WANT to constantly come back to it and practice, practice, practice, thus getting better as a player.
Well not many drummers play like the bad example that Derek showed but I think the feel of the drummers also sound as if you hear their body as he said. Accents and ghostnotes are good to practice
Far be it for me to to critique a monster.. but digging the stick into the head.. that's a lot if energy to expend.. especially playing fast... wouldn't it be better to play a rim shot? Is it maybe because of his German grip that it doesn't waste energy? I don't know this just seems counter productive..
No more energy needed to change your grip so, no more energy expended. Besides, I don't get this whole idea of taking energy out of our motion and approach. It leads to music without energy or conviction. Might have something to do with me not connecting to a lot of current metal drummers. So some expended energy is needed, to fuel the music.
just play with marching sticks and loosen your heads that will make your toms have more bite and your stroke to sound louder. i feel with toms when they are too tight the bite is harder to get and if you play with light sticks it will not cut thru
Derek Roddy is a national treasure
you're a national treasure my friend!!!!!
He is our Florida national treasure and must be protected at all costs
He is definitely a National Treasure!

The legendary best Drummer ever !! 🤘🏼💪💪💪
I remember seeing him on the drums ,in my middle school band room ,play ( I think it was ) hot for teacher drum intro from the VH song ... 😊
Skill only matched by his humility! Simply a legend!
We're not worthy......WE'RE NOT WORTHYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is reminiscent of how your pick attack can massively change your guitar sound too. I've spent a lot of time doing this same thing on guitar.
Epic advice sir! greetings from Ecuador.
This is more wisdom in three minutes than in the entire channel content of some youtube drum gurus, haha, Derek rules!
Brilliant Derek. Thanks for being out there and continuing to inspire everyone in the drumming arena. Cheers!
Love your work Derek Roddy The Legend
Absolute BOSS. Simple and thorough, and I learned even though I didn’t ask a question. This is why you are the ultimo legend. Thank you!
I learned this the hard way, man. I went through about every head Evans had. I got a drum dial and a tune bot. Thanks for the content man.
cheers everyone, y'all rule.

not only drummers watching your channel :). Guitarists too :). All the best for you Derek
Awesome. A lesson even a guitar player can understand!! Metal in Deerfield!!!
Finally someone makes a video about this!!!! THANK YOU
Nice 😎 I didn't realize I have been doing that for years
Outstanding explanation! Thank you for finally getting this message out there because I hear that questions a lot from drummers and tell them what you just explained. Cheers!
Absolutely on point. There's also a point to be made about tom angle, bad angles make for bad sounds.
