The 8...I don't really pay that much attention too. I use it like a splash cymbal...only every so often. The reason the 12 and 10 are backwards is because I use the 14 floor tom (to the left of my main hats) with the 10, and 12 as a left handed kit....built right into my right handed kit. Helps with developing the left side....etc. Cheers, D.
Haha....no haven't worked down there in a couple of years. Although, I'd like to go back....the drive kills me (I was driving from Palm beach county). Maybe since gas isn't that high anymore! Haha. Cheers, D.
@infiniteobscure Actually, none of this is Egyptian based. It's native American instruments and influence. Total different set of notes, structure and meaning.
Yes, I like to get "on top" of the blast beats so I lean in. It's also where my body wants to be when blasting....so I listen to it. As far as the keeping your back straight....It's only really important to that exercise in the book....not for your overall playing. D.
They are just Meinl Sound Caster Customs. One of my over head lights went out and makes them look weird but....they are just normal Sound Casters. Cheers. D.
Your book is so awesome. filled with great info. i love it. although it would have been cool to have this song as a play-along track on the CD. lol cheers
Also, leaning in doesn't mean your back isn't straight. Well, if you're hunching over... it's not but, you can lean in and still keep your back straight. Cheers. D.
@MrObsidian damn,, i know something new now... thanks! it is awesome to see ''native generes'' or something like that.. with some metal..and another question... how do you make those songs?... programs?? its a hardware or a software that you use?.. cuz im a drummer too and i want to make my own styled songs like you do.. THNX again!
i bought your book, "the evolution of blast beats" and i notice when you go in and start blasting in most of your videos, you lean in towards your kit, i also do that. in your book it says keep your back strait. should i go back and perfect my slower blasting with a more strait back or is it something that just comes with time. Thanks
This is the best song from this project I've heard so far. When is this stuff gonna be finnished? I found this song on your site but there weren't any of the effects on it so I'm assuming its just the demo version.
derek.... send me an old crappy drum set of yours.... i want to learn to play and be like you.... but i need a kit to start..... :p and btw, what kind of guitar gear are the guitarists using? that tone is so.... different.... yet so sick. i love it.
I was just on their website, and a lot of the bands I listen to use those cymbals, like Lamb of God and DevilDriver... I'll have to get me some of those. Thanks for the help everyone.
dear mister roddy,to you have any tips for stick control, I have always had problems with control, also I have a problem when doing a fast drum roll,i can't manage do move my arms fast from my snare to the toms without dropping my sticks or so,please answer, thanks!
@515metalhead My guess is he's using Remo Emperor coated on the toms. It's hard to tell but by the looks of it and the tone of the toms that would be my guess.
His toms are set up as normal (you can see one tom hebind the regular hi-hat) and the 3rd one (from left to right) is smaller because of the effects Derek uses. When he makes a roll (to be simple) he doesn't have to come back to get the sound of this... 8" I think. Know what I mean ?
Derek thanks for the shit eating grin i recieve everytime i watch this video or anyother one at that man, and making a dvd that helped me proggress pretty decentley in a short amount of time.
when i blast, i lean in towards my kit. but when it comes playing double bass parts, the faster i go, the more i arch my back away from the kit. put the 2 together and i have a problem
@awesome123allah Sounds like you need to loosen up, I've been drumming for 3 years and had the same problem! The solution was to do shoulder taps, everytime you hit the drum, rebound your stick behind your shoulder, it really loosens you up. then you will be able to move around the kit fast and without much trouble.
He plays with the new Meinl Soundcaster Fusion crashes, boy they sound great!
veeeery good drumming here
this song owns that intro is so sick.
I hope to God!
The 8...I don't really pay that much attention too. I use it like a splash cymbal...only every so often. you can tell when he is about to so something with S.R. when he puts his hair into a BUN!!! hahaha you're the greatest D.!!!
did any one catch that left foot grooving on the cowbell underneath those blasts???!! sick!!!!
Haha....no haven't worked down there in a couple of years. Although, I'd like to go back....the drive kills me (I was driving from Palm beach county). Maybe since gas isn't that high anymore! Haha.
Cheers,
D.

@infiniteobscure Actually, none of this is Egyptian based. It's native American instruments and influence. Total different set of notes, structure and meaning.
Also the fact that he is so perfect at his timing and as you may remember he recorded the Nile album in one take...
yessssssssssssssss that hits me like a brick every time.
hell of a drummer
Yes, I like to get "on top" of the blast beats so I lean in. It's also where my body wants to be when blasting....so I listen to it.

The musicality of this is just outstanding
They are just Meinl Sound Caster Customs.
One of my over head lights went out and makes them look weird but....they are just normal Sound Casters.
Cheers.

Very nice drumming! Like always! Hope to see more soon!
Is it just me or his kit perfectly symmetrical?
@spyrosaustin... A swahngi.... is an ancient spirit who's roots are in native tribal cultures around the world.
Yeah...JP Soars, although, he was only in Malevolent as long as I was. We also started Divine Empire together.

I don't recall ever seeing him play with anything but Meinl... Can't tell you what models though, it might say on his website.
i bought your book, "the evolution of blast beats" and i notice when you go in and start blasting in most of your videos, you lean in towards your kit, i also do that. in your book it says keep your back strait. should i go back and perfect my slower blasting with a more strait back or is it something that just comes with time.

This is the best song from this project I've heard so far. When is this stuff gonna be finnished? I found this song on your site but there weren't any of the effects on it so I'm assuming its just the demo version.
Kinda sounds like old Black Sabbath (i.e. Volume 4 and Paranoid) mixed with some more current heavy metal music. I like it!

derek.... send me an old crappy drum set of yours.... i want to learn to play and be like you.... but i need a kit to start..... :p

Hey Derek, are you working on anything new at the moment? It's been a while since I last saw you post new songs.
@515metalhead My guess is he's using Remo Emperor coated on the toms. It's hard to tell but by the looks of it and the tone of the toms that would be my guess.
I so wish I could play as solid as Derek and make it look so fucking effortless!
Master Derek Roddy.
That was awesome.. :) i like from like 3:25 onward the most sounds awesome
they are the meinl soundcaster fusion series
That slow bomb-blast fucking slays.

His toms are set up as normal (you can see one tom hebind the regular hi-hat) and the 3rd one (from left to right) is smaller because of the effects Derek uses. When he makes a roll (to be simple) he doesn't have to come back to get the sound of this... 8" I think. Know what I mean ?
so this is what your doin while most of us are just awakening..
Derek thanks for the shit eating grin i recieve everytime i watch this video or anyother one at that man, and making a dvd that helped me proggress pretty decentley in a short amount of time.
@goodsirbrett i know i was when i sat front row at his drum clinic... my head was right in front of his RIGHT bass drum off the stage
when i blast, i lean in towards my kit. but when it comes playing double bass parts, the faster i go, the more i arch my back away from the kit. put the 2 together and i have a problem
@awesome123allah Sounds like you need to loosen up, I've been drumming for 3 years and had the same problem! lol would you please show me were you saw or heard that he charges $50,000 an album.
ralph lauren should use this as advertisement. "polos are BRUTAL!!" lolol
@laurentviau umm i believe that was some kind of wind instrument that gave it the ":egyptian" taste...not the guitar.....but still sick regardless
there's a serpent rise cd? where can i get it?
3:35 is fuckin epic!
Shwan-gie?
