Apple Reminders is showing game! The new features definitely replaces Asana and Things for most freelancers. Linking Notes is something pretty cool, too.
A big leap forward for Notes. I wish Apple would provide an easy, intuitive way to link Notes with Calendar. Reminders still needs the ability to schedule a recurring task based on the completion of the last instance. Gotta keep hoping! Thanks for your great videos.
I agree, it's mind boggling to me how far behind notes and reminders are to their Microsoft counterpart. I wish Mail would also get an upgrade (also far behind Outlook). I'm still using Mail, Reminders and Notes, but while I'm in the same ecosystem, It's not as "integrated" as it is in MS365
Not to be too cynical, but sometimes I feel that Apple keeps the features on it's free apps to a minimum so they don't compete too overwhelmingly with 3rd party apps on the App Store because Apple does get a hefty cut from those sales.
Is there a way to update old "notes" files to new formats for Sonoma. It seems if you have old notes, and if you delete them they do not go into the folder "Recently Deleted" ? Thanks
PDFs were much neater before. You just had to touch one and it opened to full screen. Now on my phone I have to click the pull down press the eye symbol and then get rid of the side bar of pages. And I have found the pages appear different sizes when before they would click to the page. Hope this is just a bug and be fixed because scanning documents to a note is one of the best parts of this app. And this seems to have spoilt it for me.
I am on the iOS 17 public beta and I LOVE the improvements to both Notes and Reminders. The ability to add links to notes make Apple Notes much more powerful. And Reminders' board view and sections feature make Apple Notes nearly perfect for me. I have used Apple Reminders for years and it just works so much better than other to do apps because of its integration with the Apple ecosystem.
Appreciate this, Peter! Not a lot of people sharing the deeper dives on the new apple notes features. From apple notes, to roam, to obsidian, and back to apple notes (you know the meme), it's good to see what's coming for those of us trying to get back our second brain sanity using apple notes.
I know & appreciate the meme, fair dues... but still wouldn't call it "sanity" to go from sth where you self-host/own your data in a robust flat file structure back into a proprietary, vendor-dependent system
The only thing that keeps me from switching from Todoist is the issue with cross-platform access. Not being able to right-click and change priority on a Windows PC is a deal breaker for me.
Peter, is the announced app for journaling (similar to Day One) already part of the beta? Otherwise very nice! Apple seems to be looking closely at what the competition is doing and trying to make similar apps. Reminders and Notes are getting better and better, I think these apps will become really serious alternatives.
Love Apple Notes, unfortunately at work I cannot use it due to using a Windows environment. I would change my mind if there was a Windows app, or a much more advanced iCloud version with all the features as on a Mac. And be willing to pay for it as part of the iCLoud subscription
Amplenote is pretty Apple Notes -ish, and has apps for web, iOS and Android. The main thing it lacks is the ability to visually distinctly pin notes to the top of the notes list, which I think is great for managing projects.
I wonder if you could write a shortcut where when the early reminder goes off, it automatically flags it and you could use that flag as the today view (similar to things).
I am using the iOS 17 public beta and my reminders app is not converting stuff over to a grocery list. When I try to make a new list, it does not give me categories and I am unable to get that feature to work.
I have honestly let go of all notes app and todo apps like notion and things and just use the default notes app and reminders app. They seem to work perfectly and integrate with each other so seamlessly.
I haven't read all of the comments, but in a shopping list, you can also reorder the sections to match the layout of your grocery store (for example), so the list matches your journey through the store.
I wish I were special enough for the Groceries list sort feature to work. I've followed these instructions, and it's just a list like you'd have in Notes, which is where I'll continue to use it, since this feature apparently doesn't work for some. And yes commenters waiting to flame me, I'm on Sonoma and iOS 17. It sorts cereal exclusively. Apples, Carrots, toilet paper, milk, etc...? All just a list view....like in notes #applefail
I’m excited for the smart checklists, grocery lists sorted, and the Kanban boards. But it doesn’t make sense to me why these features are in Reminders and not Notes. These are all features I would prefer in my Notes and not have to use 2 separate apps to access certain features. Hopefully this changes.
It IS English only. So this feature is useless for me. Although I could technically write in English, a grocery list I want to write in my own language
I really dont get why they havent offered any solution for that "due date" and "wanna do at such date" problem. It's so annyoing, and keeps me from using reminders...
This is the problem with having used Things... you can never un-see how start and due dates should be handled. Makes it really hard to go back to most any other task manager. That said, Reminders has a few things going for it that Things doesn't.
Great video Peter. I am loving the new Kanban board feature and it would be interesting to see a more in depth video on this when iOS 17 has its final release. As a fellow RUclips Creator I am always looking for something that helps with productivity.
Wish you could have a Notes app per iCloud account. If you have multiple iCloud accounts on a device only one will have the Notes option.........unlike mail, contacts, calendar and tasks.
When you say "remove," do you mean "delete"? Because deleted reminders absolutely *can* be recovered. Like many Apple apps, you shake the iPhone to undo. And of course undo is available on the Mac.
I enjoy your videos, but I have to disagree with you regarding the changes. The changes they brought to ios17 are absolutely game changers and make the apps better. Now we don't have to use third party apps to get the features we now have. But again, i love your videos. Great job.
Hi Peter. I'm using the Bear app right now. Although I'd really like to use Apple Notes, I can't choose the default font, set row spacing, or make other small font adjustments in Apple Notes, which is a deal-breaker for me. Never mind the low-contrast "orange" color used for the links. If there are any new font options in settings, would you kindly let us know? Thanks!
Peter: SUPERB video, and thank you! Reminders and Notes have really come a long way in the past year or two. I’ve shifted my work-flow recently to now use both of them daily. That was NOT the case before. Apple’s DEV cycle-time is WAY too long; but, they are getting there. Thank YOU for the great info!
Great video, thanks Peter. A couple of quick questions; 1. Can now access Subtasks in the 'Scheduled view' in reminders?(Very frustrating) 2. In Notes: Can you change Font and Font colour in iPadOS like you can in macOS? Again, fantastic information, thank you.
a reminder app? The same is doing the calender since ever. Or do I miss something? 😅a reminder app is quite extensive and you can make a lot of settings that you have to remember first. Maybe it would be easier to remember appointments than settings
Hey, thanks for the great video : ) I just had a followup question. I am currently using iPadOS 16.5.1 and when I try to open a PDF in Notes, it just adds it as an attachment to the note. Then to annotate it, I need to click on that attachment in the note, enter markup mode and then annotate using the markup tools. The problem with this is that the markup tools do not have the monoline pen which I prefer to use. So, now would that mean that I can use the monoline pen to markup on the PDFs? Basically, would the notes and PDF markup tools be the same?
Great, informative video. One drawback of Notes is that you cannot annotate or use the Apple Pencil for notes that are typed up like you can in MS OneNote. Do you think Apple will ever end up adding those capabilities to Notes and make it a more comprehensive note taking application?
Along with cleaning up linking in notes, Apple should make the process of linking notes and reminders better. Right now it’s just a basic one way link. It would be awesome if it was a bit smarter …. eg: 2 way link so you could see in the note that there were reminders linked to it, if the not is linked to a reminder folder a count of outstanding/total, etc.
Hey Peter! Thanks for another great video. These improvements made to Notes and Reminders are very welcome, although, of course, Apple could’ve made even more significant changes. I’m no beta tester, and I wonder what happens if you change the title of a note that you’ve linked to in another note. Same question with moving the note to a different folder. Does the link get automatically updated in the note that contains it? Would you be so kind and tell me? Thanks again for all the great content, and I’m looking forward to reading your answer.
Hi Peter and Community, I have a question related to PDFs in a note. Ist it with the new version possible to export just the pdf in a note? And additionally is there an option to save a PDF in Apple Notes by drag and drop without creating a note in advance? These are features for which I still use Evernote. Thank you for your very good content, Peter.
Great video as always! I always see these random moments in your videos that I love. Of course, the vegan shopping, but also Aesop shopping list and then Kraftwerk??!! Did you really get to see them or was that just a fun calendar entry for the video?
It's great that Apple finally managed to reach year 2018 with Reminders and Notes. Maybe in 10 years we can actually add reminders directly to notes or use free hand drawing like in Freeform.

I never thought Apple would made Reminders so capable. If I wasn’t in OmniFocus surely reminders would be my second choice
Can I add a reminder to my Apple calendar with iOS 17? This should be very useful

No, the Apple Journal app is not yet part of the beta. I think Apple said it would be released later, after the public release of iOS 17.
Thanks!

Yes and yes.
So you use Things3. Knowing what you know now about apple notes and reminders, would you spend the money on T3 or would you use notes and reminders?
Things 3 is absolutely worth the money compared to Reminders.
you replaced Thing3 with Todoist?
Nope, I switch back and forth between a few apps to stay current on all of them, so I can teach them all
Is there a way to make templates you can load in notes? Other than making one and copying and pasting into a new note.
Potentially with shortcuts but effectively no, copying and pasting is the easiest way.
