Just want to let you know man, I have never in my years of youtube watching left a comment to the content creator because, well, who cares, but I have to tell you: I think we're about the same age (I'm turning 30 soon), and literally everything you say about gaming, specifically how the '97 to '99 years of PC gaming, is spot f'ing on. I've been binging your videos for a few weeks now, and I'm absolutely going to support you on Patreon. This review of Sin was the kicker. Your attention to detail and excellent editing have encouraged me to go back and re explore these mostly unappreciated greats. Also, you're #2 being Monoliths's F.E.A.R. really got me. You're a good man who appreciates a satisfying kill. Keep it up.
I second that. Great review, not just because I loved this game & played it for hours at LAN parties. Oh, & I still remember my mum disapproving of the big tits on the game packaging, even though I was 16. lols :)
Nightdive have just randomly updated Sin Gold on Steam, it now works beautifully with Windows 10, with proper widescreen support and a bunch of other bugfixes. Much appreciated it is too, time for another play through.
Was searching for a couple of game reviews and yours came up first, and are fantastically done. Instantly subscribed. I remember having the demo for this game when I was younger and it's great to hear how it stands up all these years later. Thank you!
Holy shit, your impersonation of Mark from CGR is insanely accurate hahaha. Great review, I really like your channel and I have subscribed as a result :)
Been waiting for this one, and you didn't disappoint! A truly underrated gem. I've been playing through it over the past few months and it holds up nicely for a early 3D engine shooter. It deserves more love than it got.
I loved SiN! The demo was one of the first FPS games I ever played. Since I had no experience with this type of game, I didn't know to invert the mouse. When the game started, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and I wondered how the hell anyone was expected to play these games. Since it took several minutes to load the level, I never went back to it on that system. I learned to play FPS games through the demos for Jedi Knight and Half-Life, which loaded much more quickly. I eventually tried the demo on a much faster system and was pleasantly surprised to find that the load times weren't bad at all. I inverted the mouse and found it quite playable, so I went and bought a used copy of it. It had some bugs, but I still really enjoyed it. I eventually got the Wages of SiN expansion and while I didn't hate it, I didn't like it as much as the original game. When SiN Episodes were announced, I KNEW that something would happen to prevent them from finishing them. :(
olvi maestro My first 3D card, which actually came with my first Intel system, was a Voodoo Banshee from Creative. It was a decent card, but it struggled to play the outdoor parts of the Descent 3 demo and whenever there were more than a couple enemies onscreen at once in the Half-Life Day One demo, it slowed to a crawl.
olvi maestro Wikipedia says that the Banshee was equal or better than Voodoo 2 in some respects, but inferior in others. The Descent 3 demo played fine indoors, but when I went outside at the end, the game got very choppy. Half-Life Day One was similar. Most of it played fine, but once you started running the soldiers, it would slow down when they were running around. Of course, some of that could be due to the fact that the system was 233Mhz.
I've heard about this game several times over the years, but you're the first one to make me actually want to play it. Excellent review, and keep up the great work!
After watching your video, I bought SiN and simply loved it. The gameplay is so much fun and it is just unfortunate that it was released at the same time with half life. This game is totally playable even after 17 years
I've played until half of the stealth levels and i didnt have any serious issues. Considering the period where shooters were less interactive and more doom-like, i think SiN tried to perform some novel things. Multiple pathways through levels, multiple attack modes of enemies and lots of heavy metal/dredd-like cyberpunk elements were not common at that time for fps genre. Surely it is not a masterpiece but it didnt deserve to be forgotten permanently.
Used to be on steam, then the pulled it for some reason :/ Oh well, i managed to get it by having Emergence on steam.. and.. of course the original cd from back in the day ;)
For anyone interested, the Steam version of SiN Episodes: Emergence is actually bundled with the original SiN and its multiplayer (this might be the case for the retail release as well, not sure).
Very good review. But have you played it when it was released? I was filled with game breaking bugs - mainly events not triggering. I personally could not finish it because of unavoidable crash the level you turn into monster. How far was that from finish? I reckon, pretty far, I know, I passed few of those horribly hard levels.
"Now I could talk all fucking day about this game, so lets get to the part with whats wrong with it" xDSold the game for me. I absolutely love graphics of this era. I don't know what it is But n64/Pc Graphics of the 90's are just pleasing to see for me and nostalgic and games of this era are also more action and music packed in my opinion.
How come SiN gold got on GOG ? Doesn't it need the publisher/developer's approval to be sold there ? Does that mean they will make future episodes ? or maybe SiN 2 ?
For those who dont known, Nightdrive studios has purchase the rights to SiN and release SiN: Gold on steam and GOG (which contents both the original SiN as well as waves of SiN), and has plans to both remaster the first game as well doing more content of the series.
I loved this game, I definitely agree it is quite underrated. I liked the pulpy silliness of it, and while there were times where he still was a little too "macho" for my personal tastes I found Blade preferable to Duke Nukem who I found annoying at times but that's just because, again, I'm not into the whole "macho" thing though that's just me.
I don't remember the specifics of getting it to run, but I definitely didn't have load times that extended into the minutes range. I played it about a year ago.
I was amazed how many alternate paths and alternate maps there are in Sin. I played the game 3 times before I discovered the dam and the nuke silo. Or that you can flood one map with lava. And I probably missed a lot.
Gggmanlives Right on...ur impression made me laugh. props to you not giving games a score, its weird how some people cant live with a number slapped on their game. I'm fine with it, and its either good or bad. And I like your views as to why...
Steam doesnt sell this game, but gog does....now does gog sell the complete edition? Ive bought some games on gog and the soundtrack sometimes isnt included...
Great review, loved Sin when it came out and I found it to be better than Half-Life. Makes me sad because I'll never be able to see this story come to its conclusion.
Waiting five minutes for load times being a issue, I remember back in the day of rubbish 36.6k modems downloading a patch for this was out of the question. Had to wait for a disk to come out with the patch on to resolve it. Wait times were much longer. After the patch the game was brilliant. 3D acceleration with Voodoo 2 12mb was the best😉
Fuckin loved this back in '99. It was bugged as shit but I still loved it. PC Zone hated Blade but I thought he was cool. The running and gunning was relentless, the level design was great and the graphics were colourful. There was some great sniping too, the sniper rifle unfolded when you selected it as well. Quality stuff.
+leopolditowtf Half-Life won not by functioning in-game computers, but by subtlety. From scientists that felt genuinely humble and afraid, to the removal of cutscenes, to a soundtrack that reflected on the current scenario, Half-Life was the first game to feel like the game world was real. Not that SiN is bad, but it just feels like a comic book.

I played this game when it came out and as you said the end was so difficult I dont think I really bothered finishing and not because I'm puss but because the multiplayer was much more fun. I played Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, UT all head to head with my friends at the time and some of the multiplayer maps in this game were the best especially the one were you were in a gigantic study like room in a mansion yet you were the size of a mouse. There were hallow walls and man bookshelves etc. And you could bounce all the way across the map jumping of the top bookshelves on to the couch while sniping mid air. I think we played this as much as the ones I mentioned above and in ways it was more of a favorite because of the features and weapons. You should check it out with a few friends but I think it is local LAN only.
Weird, you have spent so much time criticizing the technical side, but I have re-played the game on every system I owned: Win98SE, XP, Vista and 7 - never once had I trouble running it, and much less running in my desired resolution. 1080p is literally 2 or 3 console commands away. It's a shame you didn't show the later energy weapons. They are definitely worth mentioning as they are not as standard.
there are also console commands to control brightness, one I remember is GL_INTENSITY, the other one I don't remember, it made the levels much more lit
I would rather play a game where enemies represent a real threat that forces me to reload a savefile dozens of times just to clear a room, than playing a game where enemies shoot 6 feet away and not even cause damage. What other FPS's from this era you recommend me guys? I just finished Daikatana out of curiosity and honestly had a blast! Sin next. In my queue are Blood 2, Unreal, Half Life and probably the first one will be System Shock 2.
Like many other games in 98, I found out about this one through a pc game world demo disc, and given my lack of fincancial capacity, often these demo discs would dictate what titles I would be exposed to. Consequently, this game ended up being one of my personal classics.
On steam sin is bundled with sin episodes however doesn't come with expansion pack wages of sin. The gog version does include the expansion so there's no reason to bother with steam version
I used to play this game with huge dedication when it came out. Shortly after the turn of the Millennium the anime film came out, also enjoyable though not with its boring parts, ultimately ita fairly loyal to the source material though. I remember having a really hard time getting through some of the levels in this. Sin Episodes made me very very happy as a fan. At least just to return to that universe and use that sweet pistol again. Too bad its a massive pain in the ass to get now
It's really not that hard to run the Steam version on Windows 10. All you need is the resolution fix to get going at higher resolutions and the uncensored patch to put back the original textures if you so desire.
there's a fix for the opengl renderer (which is more versatile and looks better in my opinion) you just have to google "diablo opengl extensions registry" and it will show up, it's a guide with pictures and easy to follow
I remember when it was released it required a then massive patch in order to fix the game-13 or 15 megabytes, which was just crazy. Especially on dial-up internet services. It did get good reviews, but sadly the patches needed were what killed the game, at the time. Good that it gets shown so much love now tho.
My favorite line comes in the bank. If Blade jumps into a fountain (in the lobby IIR), he says, "Hey! A quarter!" I miss this style of game, too. None of the so-called retro or boomer shooters get this part right. There's a cool Easter Egg at the beginning of a military base level. If you run around inside the perimeter fence, there's a "Black Mesa" sign laying on the ground.
Sin was great. Well except that end of second level boss bug where he just stood there without moving. I loved the game manual too, it was like Blade's diary heaps of backstory and funny stuff.
Sorry man I am😂 Did you say hard corp with a P? Trying not to be a dick but the P is silent. Great video don’t stop yours and Civvie 11 are the two greatest videos on this game ever made.
I find the OpenGL renderer better looking and it can have brightness and other things tweaked by console commands. To make it work, however, you have to apply a patch in the windows registry to remove a lot of the GPU's opengl extensions. Search for "diablo registry opengl extensions", the solution is the same, it's a guide with pictures and easy.
I got SiN gold from gog.com initially it did not run well on windows 8(.1) but after I set the compatibility mode to windows xp (Service pack 2) it ran quite smooth. The game reminds me a bit of quake II, which is a good thing. I am glad I bought it!
Great review, very spot on for the most part. However, I have to disagree entirely on your evaluation of Wages of SiN. In many respects, the expansion is simply a better game. Its story is not as great, but it doesn't suffer from some of the flaws the original game did (rushed barely functional stuff like chem plant).
Fun fact: this was developed by the same guys who developed the critically acclaimed Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, who later went on to develop the critically acclaimed COD, COD2, COD4 and MW2 as Infinity Ward, and also the critically acclaimed Titanfall 1, 2 and Apex: Legends. In other words, these guys are legends of the industry, on a similar level to companies like Id Software in terms of influence on the FPS Market.
That was the expansion, "Wages of Sin" (which is FANTASTIC by the way, play it now!!!) The original game Sin was developed by Ritual Entertainment, which basically was comprised of a bunch of skilled modders from the Doom and Quake days. These guys excelled at level design and it shows in the final product. One of the map makers, Matt Worch, has a series of videos here on youtube where he shows the professional maps he has done.
A great game that unfortunately had its development rushed to compete with Half-Life (and failed miserably). I'd say that not only the game was buggy at release, but one could say that the multiplayer part also feels rushed, only a couple of levels are based on the singleplayer campaign and the rest of them are abstract levels that don't really fit the theme of the game. All things considered, the singleplayer campaign was great, with really interactive levels like it was done in the Build engine games.
Matt Worch (one of the map makers) has a series of videos here and he talks about that. The other map makers wanted to focus on "Quake" style deathmatch maps, and he didn't like it at all xDDDD
I remember being a kid, hanging out with my friend at his house, and being super excited to see this game in action, since he said it was awesome. We couldn't get past the intro video (I vaguely remember a bird exploding?) without it crashing though, which was super disappointing. Funny thing is, to make up for it, my friend showed me a different game that he liked... A little game by the name of Half Life. We were total fanboys of Valve for years after that. I wonder what would've happened if we got Sin running, instead of just moving on the Half Life...
You don't live in Australia do you? Because I knew a Matthew Hogan when I was younger...
Nope, the states...
Gggmanlives he's right, this is one of your best videos

@@salokin3087 Agreed, this is probably one of my fav gman videos.
Holy shit the Mark Bussler impression had me cracking up!
I love how u were playing all the same fps game that I did growing up and sin was one of them
Nightdive have just randomly updated Sin Gold on Steam, it now works beautifully with Windows 10, with proper widescreen support and a bunch of other bugfixes. Much appreciated it is too, time for another play through.
I just saw this comment and tried it on Linux, this game looks awesome in 4k!
The life saving feature of this game. The 'Press any key to continue' at the long loading screens.
Was searching for a couple of game reviews and yours came up first, and are fantastically done. Instantly subscribed. I remember having the demo for this game when I was younger and it's great to hear how it stands up all these years later. Thank you!
+Alastair McFly Thanks for subbing!
"really clever AI"
As he shows a guy getting stuck on a doorway. LOL
LOL I know but it was pretty ironic you've got to admit. You still see this buggy AI now, so what does that say about the development of AI in games?
Now that is irony
Holy shit, your impersonation of Mark from CGR is insanely accurate hahaha.
Great review, I really like your channel and I have subscribed as a result :)
Definitely.
For me this game and soldier of fortune were the best at its time
Soldier of Fortune is so fun!

The SMG Looks like a Bosch Drill....
Lonewolfx3 when I first played the demo I thought of this every time.
Bruh🤣🤣🤣
I loved SiN! The demo was one of the first FPS games I ever played. Since I had no experience with this type of game, I didn't know to invert the mouse. Played the crap outta that bank demo myself back in the day. Nagged me mum and dad to get me a 3D card. And what a 3D card it was. The VooDoo 2
olvi maestro My first 3D card, which actually came with my first Intel system, was a Voodoo Banshee from Creative. Half life uplink worked good on my first pc....
Haha fuck, that CGR impression was hilarious.
Silent protagonists, regenerating health, linear levels, two weapons only. I never thought it would still be going on but it is. Sigh.
Silent protagonists is pretty ambiguous in design... ie; Quake's ranger vs Lo Wang.
Ranger ain't silent anymore... ugh.
Andy Lo Wang isn't silent, dude. Far from it.
+AtticWarrior1994
That's what he meant. Ranger is a silent character while Lo isn't.
I don't dislike any of those things though and I've been shooting since Doom and Goldeneye64.
I've heard about this game several times over the years, but you're the first one to make me actually want to play it.
Excellent review, and keep up the great work!
You made fun of LORD KARNAGE!!! This video is a SIN!!!
jimmyacego007 5:07 Lord Karnage's real name is Mark Bussler.
jimmyacego007 Well like I said, just use this; 5:07
I really would like them to continue the franchise and expand the story a little more.
Awesome to see someone who not only has heard of all the random ass FPS games from the 90s, but is on a similar wavelength! Kudos gggman!
After watching your video, I bought SiN and simply loved it. The gameplay is so much fun and it is just unfortunate that it was released at the same time with half life. This game is totally playable even after 17 years

Night Dive Studious should get their hands on this.
I really hope so mate.
I want either a god damn remake or SiN Episode 2.....
they did!
Brilliant review. Nice to see the amount of effort you put in to make these. Keep it up.
Dude thank u always bringing back all those games i played but don't remember as a kid
It is on GOG now !
I loved it !

I took that Mark comment personally. Don't talk about my boy Mark that way. Good review through.
Great review! Loved playing SiN, John Blade and JC were awesome characters. Keep the reviews coming.
I am playing this game now, end of 2019 and it rocks
A man of good taste I see. Sin needs more notoriety.
JC was supposedly a nod to John Carmack.
Very good review. But have you played it when it was released? I was filled with game breaking bugs - mainly events not triggering. I personally could not finish it because of unavoidable crash the level you turn into monster. How far was that from finish? I reckon, pretty far, I know, I passed few of those horribly hard levels.
Totally up there with the best of the best fps games ever made.

No bilinear filtering, no blur, no gloom, no plastic look, just pure unadulterated textures and lighting. Smell the pixels
How come SiN gold got on GOG ? Doesn't it need the publisher/developer's approval to be sold there ? Does that mean they will make future episodes ? or maybe SiN 2 ?
That does not answer if there is any hope for sequels.
Wait, it's on GOG? Oh, never mind.... not available for German IPs..... -_-
Then change the ip ...
That Mark Bussler part had me flying back in time
Great impression of mark and another fine vid, but where can I get SiN.
I know you can buy it off ebay but will it work for my computer (wind 7)?
Awsome games! So freaking good! One of my favorite fps games up to this day.

Fuck, that Mark Busslar part had me in tears. Excellent review.
good job dude. Keep up the great work. I know you will be recognized one day.
One of the best FPS,ever made. Bought it day one.
I don't remember the specifics of getting it to run, but I definitely didn't have load times that extended into the minutes range. I played it about a year ago.

Hey GmanLives! Do you remember this game? Well, will you ever review it again?
Thanks for the review. I played this game back then, but not for long. My PC was not good enough.
really good and indepth review, has a bit of that oldschool flair
Great review man, I'm almost the same age as you. And a lot of shooting games you're reviewing were forbidden where I live.
Cheers from germany
Remembering this was on shelf here in Germany for about a month before it got pulled.
Late October to early December 1998.
God, I love the old classics!
Agreed, very solid and underrated game
Great Review. I need to play this. And also get my hands on the mission pack somehow.
This and red line the gang warfare were my favorite back then and still love them hope you'll do a review on red line
Same here!
like Half Life...kinda...
Kinda is no longer needed. ;(
Great game. The LAN parties on this were fenomenal
Game was ahead its time
Sin is fucking awesome. Always sucks that nearly nobody talks about it anymore...
Sin is a game that is good and i like to play good games
Waiting five minutes for load times being a issue, I remember back in the day of rubbish 36.6k modems downloading a patch for this was out of the question. SiN is a damn masterpiece!
On win98 with a Aureal vortex 2 it also sounds amazing.
I'd love to see a modern reboot of this. I loved being able to hack the ATM lol.

〈YellowDevil〉 Irate gamer? Lazy Game Reviews? Angry Video Game Nerd (James Rolfe?)
I think it was "Lord Karnage" he was emulating.
Very late comment, but it's Classic Game Room.
The gog version worked right outta the box.
Like many other games in 98, I found out about this one through a pc game world demo disc, and given my lack of fincancial capacity, often these demo discs would dictate what titles I would be exposed to. Consequently, this game ended up being one of my personal classics.
Is this available on Steam anymore?
I found this game at a local video game store for $2, is it worth picking up?
Yep!
Even considering how much of a pain in the ass I've heard that it is to set up?
+Raymond The Crow depends on how much you want to play it. And I bet there are enough guides on the internet to help you out.
Can you get this game on steam if you buy SiN Episodes? Because I heard this game is bundled with it.
Chaz's Dungeon I don't think so.
Gggmanlives Is it best to get SiN boxed or to get the game on GOG?
Chaz's Dungeon
Get the GOG version.
Gggmanlives Thanks :)
It might be now, back when I did this video it was a pain in the ass.
there's a fix for the opengl renderer (which is more versatile and looks better in my opinion) you just have to google "diablo opengl extensions registry" and it will show up, it's a guide with pictures and easy to follow
true 3D Duke with great level design. true classic of the 90s.
I recently found out that SiN also spawned a short anime film in 2000.
A quarter!"
I miss this style of game, too. None of the so-called retro or boomer shooters get this part right.
There's a cool Easter Egg at the beginning of a military base level. If you run around inside the perimeter fence, there's a "Black Mesa" sign laying on the ground.
great impression of mark lol
Such an underrated series.. Shame :-(
He should review that old tps action game called Evolva
Just found your channel, subbed.
+Tim Echols Thanks!
i have the original cd to this game i can never get it to install on my vista x64, anyone know a fix for that?
Sin was great. Well except that end of second level boss bug where he just stood there without moving.
I loved the game manual too, it was like Blade's diary heaps of backstory and funny stuff.
4:08 what the hell is that Serious Sam's voice?
That's right, Barney Miller is back!
Sorry man I am😂 Did you say hard corp with a P? Trying not to be a dick but the P is silent. Great video don’t stop yours and Civvie 11 are the two greatest videos on this game ever made.
I got the GOG version of SiN. and its runs smoothly on modern PCs and supports 3Dfx with Nglide patch some sort. Go to GOG.com and have a look!
I find the OpenGL renderer better looking and it can have brightness and other things tweaked by console commands. To make it work, however, you have to apply a patch in the windows registry to remove a lot of the GPU's opengl extensions. Search for "diablo registry opengl extensions", the solution is the same, it's a guide with pictures and easy.
mark sure does love his games :D
Use nglide and then just change fov in console. So mutch easier way to get widscreen and more importantly get the game to work.
I got SiN gold from gog.com initially it did not run well on windows 8(.1) but after I set the compatibility mode to windows xp (Service pack 2) it ran quite smooth. The game reminds me a bit of quake II, which is a good thing. I am glad I bought it!
+JaapioNL That's because It DOES run on Quake II's engine. xD; It Is a pretty great game.
The blue hands in the game always gave me the vibe that i was actually playing REBOOT.... lol
In the 90's, getting the game to work was 45% of the game.
