Quality of the shooter is very high indeed. The fact that it isn't as well-known might have to do with the release date. It released in 1997, a year later(!) than Quake, which was already full 3D. In 1997, full 3D became pretty much the standard, and only a year later, Half Life would already come out. The game is very good in itself and I bet it would've been a classic if it would have released in 1994, a year after Doom 1. It was simply a little late.
Daniel Cromarty depends on who get the job. DNF we all know; Shadow Warrior was stripped of all the humor and only Rise of the Triad was somewhat of a success.
i'd say hexen 2's a better example of a hardcore shooter. blood is only as hard as it because of the pinpoint hitscan cultists. every other enemy in the game can be hard countered by strafing, crouch-strafing, or jump-strafing
This masterpiece is in my top 3 favourite games of all time. Everything about this game was just perfect. The difficulty, the weapons, the enemy variance, the cultist taunts , the level design. All perfect. I recall playing the train level when I was younger and finding the akimbo powerup for the first time. I flung open the doors to the next carriage and let loose with my akimbo Tommyguns. That's when I fell in love with this game. It's so under appreciated. You hear a lot about Doom, Duke 3D and even Shadow Warrior, but not much at all about Blood. It's a shame.
Such a great shooter, one of the best in 1990s, but for some reason quite underrated and unknown everywhere! Maybe there were more famous and more marketed alternatives at the FPS market back then? The sequel, Blood 2 The Chosen, was uninteresting and bad in my opinion. It is true that the original Blood game was pretty unforgiven on higher difficulty settings in the episodes 4 and 5 - especially the first levels were very hard to complete on the highest difficulty setting. Otherwise it wasn’t so difficult to play or beat in general, just a challenging gaming experience even for an adept FPS player. In addition, the gameplay in general, gameplay dynamics and level design & puzzles are pretty much excellent at the time. Sometimes a level can be pretty complex, but there’s always a solution if you come back some other time. I remember one of the later levels of the last episodes: ‘In to the flesh’ or something like that was the name of the level. It was namely set inside the human body; the finish was inside the heart. Truly eccentric ideas and very peculiar level design that no one has ever since iterated :) Couple of enemies are annoying such as severed hands, spiders and the flying spectre that disappears always after taking a hit. The pinpoint accuracy of the ranged enemies is a pain in the ass, too! Some of the secret areas are damn well hidden, and game is also full of easter eggs, horror movie puns and jokes here and there. It is sad that they do not make games with such a creepy humor and crooked attitude in the 2010s anymore. I think that Caleb had even more one-liners than Duke Nukem :D
The hands freaked me out and was the only enemy I was afraid of and screamed from. I didn't have sound so I couldn't hear their voice but them jump scaring like that was terrifying and I didn't know you could press the use key multiple times to get it off so I restarted form the last save
Never have I seen a more satisfying to use explosive weapon in videogames then the TNT in Blood. The powerfull sound, the explosion kickback, the shacking camera is just perfect.
They're really well written. Good pacing and no fluff. Plus the material he covers is interesting. This channel is encyclopedic for classic FPS games. If I wanted to know about a 90s FPS I'd look for a review on this channel before looking at Google search results.
Definatly nothing since has topped it,but I'd argue that all classic FPS games of the 90s all have their own charm to it and are equally fun (Doom,Wolfenstein 3D,Shadow Warrior,Duke Nukem and Outlast)
Yeah, but Atari won't allow Jace Hall to release the source code, which would allow for a complete source port. Yes, there's Blood: Fresh Supply, but there are still a few flaws that don't make it 1:1 with DOS Blood.
Gggmanlives Thanks for this good Blood review, mate! So much shown in so little. My all time favorite video game. So much great time with it. This game should have remake and a movie. Blood 2 was lame, to compare with original. One game have Blood tribute level/weapons, forget it's name. Did anybody play ZBlood, is it worth playing? Play Blood for free? Search on "Caribbean gulf" Blood 1997. Caleb: "Now kids, don't try this at home... hehehehehe...", "Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun.", "I'm gonna paint the town re-e-e-ed...", "EVERYBODY DIES!!!"
I'm really happy I found your channel. When I first watched this review it convinced me to buy Blood and I've gotta say, it's now almost my favorite old school fps game, right behind Duke Nukem 3D.
It would be nice to see a sequel or reimagined version of Blood. I know there's the One Unit Whole Blood edition on Steam and GOG, but I would really like to see a definitive edition sort of like Shadow Warrior Redux or Duke Nukem Megaton Edition so it's actually optimized for newer machines. Dosbox is great, but I do like the more modern friendly versions of older games these days.
+Ronny Webster (Ronny1031) Yes, reboot it, or make the story finish, as even Blood 2: The Chosen's (awful) Nightmare Levels add-on does not really give a true ending for me. Or you should look after some mods like Death Wish. I finished it a while ago, and I'm say: it is too good be a mod. Worth to play it. (also: it is way harder then the basic game)
@LkMaxBR Same here, though exploration/action cycle in Painkiller wasn't that bad and the arenas weren't just a single room, typically a big piece of the whole map. Serious sam - don't like it too much, never finished a single game. Shadow Warrior though was quite annoying in places. And anyway, most modern shooters force arena fights from time to time. Or nearly all the time. Even HL2 did that a lot.
“And eventually some truly devastating weaponry such as napalm launchers and even a Tesla gun, which shoots rapid balls of electricity with deadly precision” *proceeds to fucking die*
I have to admit. When I was a kid I had the share ware version. Sure some parts of Doom or Quake scared me. But NOTHING as much as the beginning of Blood when a zombie is running at you full speed and all you have is a pitchfork... I miss the 90's.
I remember how much I loved this game when I was 14. For some reason the graphics and movement made me nauseatic with dizziness, yet I played this game over and over again.
The game deserves a remake. Although i'm not too sure that I'd prefer a remake with the slapstick feel of the first game. The first game actually set a nice, horror-game mood with the music, enemy design as well as the dark and morally ambigous main character. But the many comedic horror film references kind of detracted from the experience a little. A remake with some more grimdark grittyness, more horror, better graphics and still some dark humour, but more toned down and less cartoony could be a really great game. Also Caleb is one of my favourite protagonists of all time, so he and Stephan Weyte definitely needs a comeback.
I picked this game up on GoG a few days ago and haven't put it down since. I think it's quickly becoming one of my all time favourites. I'm not that easy to please in terms of games or gaming channels for that matter but this guy is great. Keep up the good work!
There's just something so satisfying about these 90's fps and how the reload animation looks on the shotguns. Like this and the double barrel on doom 2
I just found your channel and watched few of your reviews and i have to say, good job! Your reviews are solid in terms of giving the viewer the real facts in clear and often times funny ways with great clips demontrating the thing you are explaining.
i'm 16 and even I know that FPS games made in the 90's were a lot better than most modern FPS games, it's just a shame that I never got to experience games like DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, Aliens vs. Predator, Quake, Etc. when they first came out. Honestly most 90's FPS games still hold up to this day and are still fun to play.
JUMBO DEUCE i grew up with wolfenstain 3d, doom 2, quake 1-2, syndicate and other classic games like c&c tiberian sun. I bought the id pack on steam and is now playing through the first expansion to quake 2. Back then expansion meant more of EVERYTHING! new levels, new type of levels, improved engine to make even more amazing scenery and worlds, more guns, more powers, improved old enemies and more for one expansion.
magnusm4 Yea remember when you paid $60 for a game, u got the whole game and an expansion was actually what it was called and not the rest of the game. Even in the early 2000's when I was growing up playing games you got the entire game, like Halo, Republic Commando, Medal of Honer, Etc.
magnusm4 I remember in like 2001-2006 there were sooo many great games made like Brothers in Arms Call of Duty 2 & 3, Medal of Honer Allied Assault, Rising Sun, & Frontline, The Punisher (2005), Mercenaries, The Spider Man Games, Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2, Halo CE & 2, and loads more. The gaming industry is awful right now filled with DLC and microtransactions, although some DLC is good as long as it adds to the game instead of being the rest of the game sold separately.
JUMBO DEUCE I miss expansion packs that not only game you longer and more game but changed the original game by adding more to it like the d2 expansion giving two new classes and new items with their own unique function
Some people watch series for entertainment, some watch movie, decorating, cooking or reality shows. I do agree that some of these examples are enjoyable but sometimes you just crave for something extraordinary, something pure and honest. Maybe something nostalgic (if you stopped playing and rediscovered it again) Thats when I always come back to "GGGmanlives Reviews" He knows whats he talking about and he's always always entertaining to watch (and listen to) when it comes to old classic game or new game in general. What I mean to say is that some shows you can watch over and over again, a GGGmanlives Review like this "BLOOD" review you can watch so many times before bordom occurreds. Thats what I call skill! This game took me a while to get into, but once I did, it became one of my favorite games; I just love all the references, the over-the-top silliness and how satisfying the weapons are.
Agreed. Just don't let Activision get their dirty claws on this gem, else we might get Caleb with regenerative health and enemies dumber than my fridge.
You forgot to mention that it had a superb multiplayer mode. Deathmatch was super fun in the imaginative levels with the crazy weapons. We played this much more than other BUILD games.
you can turn mouse aiming on in the options menu within the game itself. Or just press 'u' as a shortcut ingame. Blood has an auto-aiming system which makes vertical aiming redundant though so you won't really need it to be honest.
This game brings back so many memories. The first computer in my household was when I was still a kid in primary school and my dad bought a second hand Pentium 2 I think Windows 95 computer that had 3 games on it GTA 1 ; Duke Nukem 3D and Blood.
Man, this game was tough. I need to go back and play through it again though, I haven't done a serious playthrough of it since back when it was still somewhat new.
Just brilliant, had so much fun playing this when I was like 13 in the 90s, just gory, bloody, blasting occult fun......the old classics like this and Duke Nukem are better than many games coming out today
The best FPS game ever! Man, after I've found the Build engine in the game files, made so many maps with gibs, opening doors and so on. The programming was quite a challenge to decypher, but when you did things right it was so rewarding! I remember when I built my house with the engine, it was so perfect...
Best game in that genre. I agree with you about Caleb's voice actor. Fantastic horror atmosphere , time period and everything. Very original and creative. I started playing it when I was 12, I still play it sometimes now and I'm 29...
Finished the entire game for the first time not too long ago and I'm just playing Cryptic Passage and my God, the level design and texture work in Cryptic Passage is amazing! I feel it's better that the actual game at times.
i love how the enemies flesh peels off when u burn/blow them to bits also the voodoo doll has some unique kill animations for a lot of enemies if u use its ulti fire
The Voodoo Doll is actually pretty effective at killing the stone gargoyles. Plus, there's an oversight in the game where they can't really hit if you're crouched. The Life Leech's alternate fire (which I think is only available in the One Whole Unit version, is the most powerful in the game. You drop it and it acts as an automated sentry gun, automatically firing at enemies in the area. You can use it to easily take down bosses. Just drop it and run away.
"I live...again." "Yo, she-bitch, let's go." I've never played this game, so I don't know if this applies to more lines in the game, but these two are directly from Army of Darkness. Pretty cool.
You forgot to show kicking zombies heads around like a football! lol Your reviews are good! Loving these Retro game reviews, i played alot of these games when was 15/16. Great time for FPS gaming on PC
For some reason, this game scares me more even today, than the DX12 ultramegasuper 3D FPS games of the 21. century. It has such a unique atmosphere nowhere else seen.
*Maranat Lufirmux* loved that phrase xD me and my friend played this when we were 10yrs old at his place and always felt so disturbed and frightened by the high-res close-up of the zombie eating a ripped off leg and one night just as we stared at it after a playthrough his mom decided to smash open his door and give off a scream which nearly had him in tears while we both screamed like two girls who just shit their pants XD
Which difficulty would y'all recommend as the optimal Blood experience? I played on Lightly Broiled and it seemed challenging and perfectly balanced to me.
played Duke Nukem , played Shadow Warrior .... and I need to play Blood ! looks lot better than Blood 2 Chosen. anyway ... your reviews are by far the best !!! you show a bits from most levels so we have wider idea about the game. Top Job (y) (y)
Bought this game on steam today and you are 100% correct, this is a masterpiece and a really dang good game and yes... i’m still trying to beat the 1st level for the 5th time
Back then this game was amazing. Of course that was a golden era of fps games with doom and all the games it spawned many of which were actually really good. This game had atmosphere and pushed the limits back then with violence. It was scary too for those days
most underrated shooter from the 90s period
Aye, this or Hexen.
Exhumed/Powerslave?
I think Strife even more obscure and underrated.

Kelly Moon there's an active community over at discord.me/heretic ! (Also includes Hexen)
I remember my dad not letting me install this because the demo was 50mb.

I'm glad you enjoy the videos!
One of the greates FPS of all time.
in my book, Blood is second only to Doom among classic FPS games. Shadow warrior was also good. The new Shadow warrior was fun too.
Quake, & Painkiller?
LodovicoAriosto1 In my book Blood is the best 2.5D game, thus making it better than Doom.
Back then shooters were hardcore as fuck, these days we are happy if they even have health bars and a damn campaign.
Shit.
yeah it's sad
@@jeremieh5009 nowadays shooter has changed again lol, thanks to indie and doom eternal

I completely agree. This game is one of the best FPS of all time IMO.
@̣ Doesn't matter, I still have the same opinion. :P Darkwatch huh. Haven't heard of it but will check it out, what's it like?
The hours I spent setting cultists ablaze with a flare gun... good god, good times
Kyle Batteson In a multiplayer mode, remote-controlled TNT was the best ;)

Such great memories with these games back in the day. The best FPSs were the ones in the 90s, no question about it.
This gives me so much memories. One of the few big box PC games I still keep and will never sell.

No, no, no! Don't use fire against a gargoyle, electrocute it.
One shot from the napalm launcher will kill the standard gargoyle.

To be fair, blood for a long time was one of the only old school build engine games to have a sequel.. But with that said we still need Blood 3.
007Tubedude It really didn't do it much justice though, it was a fun game but not og Blood fun
the best version is the one from GOG.com. It has the expansion pack and runs pretty well.
would really like to see a retro review of the GOG version from the game Eradicator (1996, Accolade).
Thanks for the review mate, this brought back some really good memories :) I remember playing this game as a teenager and loved it so so much.
This game...changed my life! It's up there with Doom and Quake for sure
Ah great memories man. Thanks for a trip down memory lane
Just brilliant, had so much fun playing this when I was like 13 in the 90s, just gory, bloody, blasting occult fun......the old classics like this and Duke Nukem are better than many games coming out today
I remember playing this game and this brings back memories. Old games were always so much more fun
Are you gonna do BloodGDX? It's literally a source port!
"Along came a spider, and sat down beside her and asked: Whats in the bottle, bitch?" :D oh the memories.
I personally love running it in dosbox. So much that I play Shadow warrior in dosbox. I love the original "feel" the nostalgia!!!!!!!!!!
I feel it's better that the actual game at times.
i love how the enemies flesh peels off when u burn/blow them to bits
also the voodoo doll has some unique kill animations for a lot of enemies if u use its ulti fire
Hey Gman! The Blood Remaster is out now on GoG!
Nice review mate! I love this game! When i played 1rst time, i couldnt sleep at night! Now every time i play it, it brings me back memories!
This, duke nukem ,and doom are my favorite games from then.
gggman I love your reviews!
The games I played when a child with my dad were, Blood, Quake 2 (PS1), Shadow Warrior.
The voodoo doll is EXTREMELY USEFUL especially on the hardest difficulty, you NEED it. It clears out a whole room with the alt fire
I got into blood as a kid over 15 years ago cuz its graphics&genre was similar to resident evil 2
Those times were golden
I remember when I played this game in 1997
I think the build engine gives games a certain charm that is timeless.
Very good review ! Blood is one of my favourite FPS games ever. It would be so damn cool if Monolith make Blood 3.
"I live...again."
"Yo, she-bitch, let's go."
I've never played this game, so I don't know if this applies to more lines in the game, but these two are directly from Army of Darkness. Pretty cool.
The Dark carnival was a master piece level and it helped I was reading a goosebumbs novel that is set in a carnival too. That game was AWESOME.
You forgot to show kicking zombies heads around like a football! lol
Your reviews are good! Loving these Retro game reviews, i played alot of these games when was 15/16.
Great time for FPS gaming on PC
For some reason, this game scares me more even today, than the DX12 ultramegasuper 3D FPS games of the 21. century. It has such a unique atmosphere nowhere else seen.
cool review, this is still one of my all time favorite games!
*Maranat Lufirmux*
loved that phrase xD me and my friend played this when we were 10yrs old at his place and always felt so disturbed and frightened by the high-res close-up of the zombie eating a ripped off leg and one night just as we stared at it after a playthrough his mom decided to smash open his door and give off a scream which nearly had him in tears while we both screamed like two girls who just shit their pants XD
Which difficulty would y'all recommend as the optimal Blood experience? I played on Lightly Broiled and it seemed challenging and perfectly balanced to me.
Now you have convinced me to play this game, in lets say the coming October.
This game was ahead of it's time! Like a rework of Doom!
played Duke Nukem , played Shadow Warrior .... and I need to play Blood !
looks lot better than Blood 2 Chosen.
anyway ... your reviews are by far the best !!!
you show a bits from most levels so we have wider idea about the game. Top Job (y) (y)
AMAZING game, spent so many hours playing this.
Long live 90's games.
Don't forget that this game has the best OST for an FPS ever
this video needs more views. Great work man
This has to be one of my favorite FPS games ever.
I'd die for a proper remaster of this game
I am in love with these type of games
