  • Rare video footage of No Doubt playing live during their early years when John Spence was in the band. This was taped at Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach, California, where No Doubt headlined Mod Expo III in 1987 (I don't know the exact date). In this clip they play a cover of "Baggy Trousers" by Madness. Video quality is poor due to the age and condition of the tape.

  • @miap

    Gwen has such an incredible story because she just happened to be around when her brother put the band together and had no real drive to be a rock star, she just joined in. John encouraged her to join in and sing more even though she was a shy/reluctant teenager. It’s people like John that see the potential in others and want them to shine their brightest, if only he would have been able to see that within himself. Having the right people around you to lift you up makes a world of difference 🙏💛😢

    Always loved no doubt but I recently discovered their early years with John Spence as lead and it’s unfortunate how soon he lost his life. Definitely would’ve been great to see how him and Gwen could’ve been together if he seeked help but Ik he’s in a better place now. RIP John Spence

    • @ropete33
      @ropete33 4 года назад +3

      Her brother won't speak about it. He started to talk about it in the Behind the Music he said he thought it may have been the pressure. And then he stopped the interview. I think that's what it was, he was so afraid of not making it that he just couldn't go through with it didn't think he could take the rejection if it came.

    I don't think they'd have become as successful with John instead of Gwen as lead singer. Watching all of the videos I've came across from this show, I think with either they are a great band, but this sound was maybe 6 or 7 years too late to become popular (although when I saw The Specials in 2009, there were many sort of 15-30 year olds there, so I might be wrong). I wish John was around for an album though, they had some good stuff at the time

    • @11matt11
      @11matt11 4 года назад

      You're totally right. This type of sound would never have made it in the late 1980's in the States, especially when grunge came along. They would have stayed OC legends, and that's probably it. Gwen's music writing blossoming post grunge couldn't have been better timing, as I don't think Tragic Kingdom does well in the early 1990's, if listened to at all. They also filled a huge hole over seas, in both Europe and Asia, who were out of new sounds for their alt-rock movements, and hadn't heard a strong female one. It's funny how Tragic Kingdom started on alt-rock stations at the beginning of Tragic Kingdom, then was played by straight rock and pop rock two years later when they finally came home after touring, especially in Europe and Asia. No Doubt became a hugely influential band, especially in places like Japan, the Netherlands. and north central Europe.
