the "M" specification that have been removed with the introduction of the GTX 1000 mobile GPUs really should be coming back.
when you were buying a laptop with a GTX 970M back in the day, you knew what you were getting, and oyu knew that the chip wasn't as powerful as a GTX 970.
The GTX 1000 mobile were very close to the desktop parts, and it made sense back in the day (especially for the 1050 and 1050Ti Mobile that were really widespread)
nowadays with RTX 2000 and 3000 Mobile being very, very diffrent from their desktop counterpart, callling a Mobile GPU a "RTX 3080" is false advertisment at worst (since it isn't even a GA102, at least RTX 2000 Laptop chips were using the same die, granted a TU102 never made its way into a laptop anyway), or misleading marketing at best. Either way, it is really easy to get lost if you're not tech savy enough to see the diffrence between a mobile RTX 3080, and differentiate what the performance will be based on the max power that the GPU can access to.

    • @amirpourghoureiyan1637

You're just not laptop gamers and want to throw shit our way with all your cases, power adaptors, liquid cooling systems and all the bling bling, waiting for the "real thing" for ludicrous prices, while we get 25% less performance at half the wattage for much less. Go buy a second hand burned out card from a mining rig and shut it.

    • @fleurdewin7958
      @fleurdewin7958 3 года назад +2

Well, GTX 1080 desktop variant is a 180W TDP part at reference spec . So it is really easy to match the performance in a mobile form factor. Reference RTX 3080 desktop is a 320W TDP part, but laptops can only take up to 150W part. There is a huge difference in power budget that explains the big difference in performance. But look at it this way, why has the 80 series desktop Nvidia GPU suffer so badly in efficiency. From a 180W part to a 320W part.

These are the games I played on it ever I since I bought it all at pretty much maximum/Ultra settings
    RDR2 : 65-92
Cyberpunk : 45-70 (Ray Tracing High, DLSS ON) Also FPS is not always stable but for that I blame the game not the Laptop
Call of Duty Cold War : 100/130 (rarely 95)
    AC Odyssey : 70
AC Valhalla : 50-61 (Not sure why it's lower then 60 most of the times)
Watch Dogs Legion : 35 with RT. 62-67 without RT
Horizon Zero Dawn : 72-80 (surprisingly well)
Resident Evil Village : around 80-85 (Drops to 20-27 when The Daughters of Lady Dimitrescu attack but that's like till you get away from them)
    Doom Eternal : 130-160
All the games above tested in Turbo mode. Now I just hope it will last for at least 3-4 years even tho it's brand new still like 1 month old. Overall...I think it's the best thing I got my hands on and I'm very happy with it. Battery is my only problem. Like 3-4 hours tops in Turbo but if you're at home you can always just plug it in and then no problems

So basically my 17" laptop that is coming tomorrow with 165w 3080, 5900HX and 1440P screen will be able to play stuff at 60 FPS+ at 1440P. Good enough for me. This laptop has really good thermal and gpu performance, gets a 12500 on time spy which is the highest I have seen (or at least near the very top) for laptop. I really want to be able to make use of the 1440p resolution. After watching HDR movies at 4K on an asus 17 and even 1440P on the very same laptop that my friend has (what convinced me to buy one), it's hard to go back to 1080P. It's called the Infinity M7 here and I think it's XMG neo or something overseas. I believe the only downside is the 230w power brick, so the cpu can't maintain maximum boost when the gpu is using 165 watt, but the good thing is that you can adjust all the power levels individually, so if a game is really cpu heavy, can strike the right balance. Oh and it has a mux switch, yay. I compared every existing 3080 laptop and many of them are getting thrashed by the 3070 version of the laptop I am buying, or also the alienware X17 3070 for example, cause they use low watt 90 to 105w 3080 which makes a massive difference and the likes of the alienware use the max wattage. BTW I am happy to drop to high at 1440, don't need ultra, really. The resolution is better IMO and high is always good enough. I was a bit concerned I wouldn't be able to game at 1440P but this has eased my concerns. I still don't see any point in 4K laptops for gaming though, like what ASUS Rog is doing. Pointless!
PS My 3yo Aorus X5 V8 with GTX 1070 that benches 5900 on timespy has still never let me down for 1080P ultra or high in modern games.. :) The killer is ray tracing on the newer cards but DlSS can balance stuff out too. I think for 4K laptops, DLSS is a must.. DLSS at 1440P real mode with upscaling to 4K.

it made sense to remove the M branding for the 1000 series as the gpus in laptops at the time were very close to there desktop counter parts. but starting with the 20 series and its increased power limits in desktop to where we are now with even high power limits you just cant match the higher end gpus power draw in a laptop and contain its heat. this gen the 3060 has almost the same tdp as the 1080 so its quite understand able why there is so much of an issue trying to scale such high wattage parts to a laptop. they really need to bring back M or some other letter these days as gone are the 1000 series golden days. but it also shows how poor we have done in watt to performance that we had to just cram power into a architechture to get performance improvments

In reality, it's 3072 CUDA cores, with the possibility of doing two FP32 instructions rather than one FP32 instruction and one INT32 instruction per cycle (the latter being required to qualify as a "CUDA core", given that CUDA supports integer math).
The scaling of this dual-FP32 capability seems to be about 30% of the total capacity, meaning that 3072 Ampere core count is roughly equivalent to 4000 Turing cores. The desktop 3080, in contrast, has 4352 Ampere CUDA cores, which are roughly equivalent to 5600 Turing CUDA cores.

If you want something "right now" you're going to pay too much even if you go for a laptop. If you're willing to wait and try your luck at the fe cards (in regions they're actually available or shipped to) then you're still better off going the desktop route.
Don't get me wrong, the laptops are good, but people saying the laptop prices are good because they're comparing them to horribly scalped GPU prices is just daft, you're getting shafted one way or another, the only way to avoid it is patience and a little tenacity. My desktop with a 3070 came to £1600 and most people don't have use for a 12 core cpu or 32GB of ram... You could grab a better screen than you'll find on any laptop and still come out cheaper than a much lower performing laptop.

@@AdaaDK Yes, they should ALSO make it more clear what performance it could manage, like giving the wattage, but they should still be named differently to desktop gpu's to avoid confusion, since even at the top wattage and performance they are never going to be anywhere near as good as desktop gpu's.
For instance 3065 (100 watt ). Maybe another explanation could be applied to them as well, so people could easily tell whether it was a high performance version, mid level, or low performance but higher battery life with lower power consumption.
Like maybe something like 3065 (115Watt++).
No plus for lower power/performance, One plus for mid level performance, and two plusses for high power consumption & high performance.

That power efficiency is wow in the laptop. But where are the costs (not only 30% difference at less than 50% of power)?

Any parent that walks into a store to buy their kid a 3080 gaming laptop, has more pressing problems than not knowing the difference between a laptop and a regular GPU.

I’d be shocked if a parent was willing to drop the money for their kid on something like that. More like PC gaming enthusiasts who want a laptop for whatever reason and can afford it I’d imagine. Parents are gonna go lower end for their kids would be my expectation.

Might be not close to the desktop but very decent for laptop still. I think overall results for all games might be higher also with amd cpus and 3080, not just in those games which were better with amd in that video. Since cpu overhead is still there imo. To test it you might try to increase power limit for 3070 to be on par with power limit on 3080 to see how close it can be.
