I think this is all very understood. No different in saying a RTX 4090 is more powerful than a 4070 or 4080 and of course uses more power....

The voltage limit is an incredibly disingenuous move on nVidia’s part. If they advertised these cards as up to 100w, that would be fine as a marketing tool for efficiency. Instead, they get to advertise more power, more better, without actually delivering on performance
Yes, and it clearly holds back the 4070 immensely. It's fine to restrict voltage on battery power, but not when it's plugged in. Anyhow, I won't be suckered into buying a more expensive 4080 or any other 4000 series GPU for that matter.

I got the rtx 4080 laptop gpu (lenova legion 9 pro) and the 4070 laptop chip (in a asus zephyrus m16). But, I only have 16g of ram in the asus, and 64g in the legion, so it's hard to compare no matter what, but the fps drops are so much less on the legion. lol.

Sure the performance difference is large but the price is also large (Atleast in regions where i can buy it from) Usually it is around 400-600$ difference and then again you're not just looking at the GPU on paper when buying it. The TGP varies by models , plus the screen, cooling, battery life, upgradability all matter of the laptop all matter.

As always it just depends on price. If the price difference between a 4070 and 4080 is like 300 even 400 hundred dollars than by all means get a 4080. But right now you can get deals on 4070 laptops that make the price difference more like &700-$900. A Legion with 4070 can be had for like 1600-1700 right now, a 4080 version comes in 2500+. That's a gap in price that is actually bigger than the gap in relative GPU performance, as long as you are fine gaming at 1440p/1600p which these GPU's seem perfectly capable of handling.
Great review. Would add a caveat -- I think the mfgs realize they aren't selling so managed to get a 4070 legion that I paid 4060 prices for (~1350$ w. 7745hx). 4080 capable laptops seem to be outside my price range and would set me back quite a bit more.
They are when the 4070 is $1080 and the 4080 is $3000.
Hi Jarrod, from that video where you showed that above 100 W all 4060-70 perform the same (capped fps above 100w), I am looking ONLY at 4080 laptops. There is no point getting somethinng above 100W 4060. Thanks again!
I'm glad you mentioned the lower wattage of the 4080 on the Asus M16, makes me reconsider my options 🤔
Jarrod, I think you could have compared at least a few games at the same power limit to show differences that are not attributed to power alone.
When pointing out how bad of a value the 4070m is you should also include the 4060m. Its ~10% slower but more than 10% cheaper and has the same 8gb vram.
In my country it was a 40 dollar increase in price switching from 4060 to 4070 in the configuration so i think it depends on the deal aswell. But the jump to a 4080 would be a few hundred dollars
I'd save 40$ and get a 2TB SSD
@@GewelReal huh just spend 40$ more its not much when you already spend that much for a 4060

That band you're wearing the T Shirt for are awesome. Oh yea, good video by the way.
Hey Jarrod! Can you please maybe review the MSI Bravo 15 with the RTX 4060? I believe it uses a 105W GPU which is exactly the sweet spot for performance as shown in your previous videos and it is sitting at a reasonable price.
Just bought a i9 13900HX with RTX 4070 and I am extremely happy with the purchase. The performance boost with 4080 doesn't justify it's price by any means. In India the difference for the same configuration with RTX 4080 costs around $900 more which is not justified at all. Budget is a thing and it can never end if you keep stretching your means. If 4080 then why not go for 4090, one might also ask?
I played Microsoft Flight Sim on the RTX 4070 and it is absolutely a beast in all aspects of gaming and productivity. The i9 13900HX processor and 4070 graphics card are a deadly duo. More than sufficient in all aspects.
Thanks for sharing, in my case the money difference is not that much as the 900usd that you mentioned between RTX4070 and 4080.
I would greatly appreciate your opinion please, I don't know which option to choose for work. I am debating between:
Alienware M18 (18" 480hz screen + i9 13900HX + 32GB Ram + RTX 4080 + 1TB NVMe SSD)
Vs.
Lenovo Legion PRO 7 (16" 240hz screen + i9 13900HX + 64GB Ram + RTX 4070 + 1TB NVMe SSD + 2TB NVMe SSD + ).
For the same price for both (about USD$2,000), which one would you select for content creation and especially video editing, rendering, etc.?
Starting from the fact that I currently work on content creation and video editing from an HP (15" screen + i7-7500U + 16gb ram + 1gb AMD Radeon + 1TB M.2 SSD) and it lags when I'm editing videos, when It starts to export, it gets quite hot and I practically have to leave it alone in that activity so as not to force it...
Thanks in advance!
@@GatoCurioso-01 Legion Pro 7 has better specs and I don't know about Alienware software but Lenovo software is absolutely amazing and you can personalize almost every aspect of the laptop, it's important cause if you have temperature problems you can undervolt it. Since you create content more ram is better but you should investigate about display quality ( coverage of SRGB %, DCIP3 %, Adobe %, etc) also 18" is more visible to work but less portability, so if you use to move with the laptop frequently 16" is better.
PD: English isn't my first language, so sorry if something is wrong. If you have something else to ask I have no problem answering.
I honestly think you should go with Alienware, I can now say that with confidence and I will tell you why. No matter what specs you are looking into any "gaming" rig released in the last few years is almost guaranteed to run any AAA game properly and will most likely remain that way for 3-5 years depending on selection. However you could have parts or technical issues in that time frame that most companies make you jump through hoops to deal with. Except apparently Alienware, they are such a massive company they can offer remote and on site tech support, parts and accidental damage replacements, etc. I forgot the channel but a reviewer on gaming laptops talks about this subject in depth. If you go through Dell you can get the premium support sub for like 20-25$ a month which offers it all upon purchase of a gaming rig. Any other company you will probably be mailing away your laptop and waiting possibly weeks before you see it again. When spending thousands on a gaming laptop you want the best, fastest, and most affordable and convenient solution to any problems that may occur. For me half the reason for not wanting to spend big bucks on a new gaming laptop was a lack of options when it came to possible technical issues and fast affordable solutions. It would seem only Alienware offers that, I'm about to get the M18 4070 right now as we speak with the premium sub. Games will run great and they will look good doing it, some people are hard core performance snobs when it comes to small percentages of an increase here or there, personally I am more concerned with quality assurance.
4070 is made purposefully bad by NVIDIA, the gap is made artificially HUGE, so the gamers will choose the pricier option. Also there is literally no performance gain between 3070 and 4070 which is laughable :D
No difference between 3070 and 4070? Then that means I can keep my 3070 laptop for a little longer!
there is 10-15% performance gain, but it's still tiny considering that Lovelace is overall much more energy efficient, even without Frame Generation. They cut the 4070m artificially because it's a popular GPU class, so they can get maximum profit with minimal expenses on manufacturing.
In short - a scam.
The 4070 is more akin to the 3070ti. But it’s still not great by any metric. The main use I’ve seen of it is power efficiency in thinner laptops but even then it’s not amazing.
The only main benefit over the 3070ti is frame gen, but that’s only for the 15 games that support it
@@sarthak-ti and for the ones that are to be released in near future as well
I think you mean the 3070 ti, there’s actually a fair bit of performance improvement from the 3070
het Jarrod, are there plans to review the framework laptop 16 by any chances ? (wouldn't be suprised if the awnser was no, since its quite an expensive AF laptop)
He said he would _only_ if Framework sends one over for review. And it seems like they will.
@@cameronbosch1213 did I miss the video where he said that, or the info was release to only some people?
Haha, i already pulled the trigger on the 4070. It is largely the same as the 3070ti last year. Coming from a 80w 3060 it was very nice. In my country, the 4070 is around 70%- 50% the cost of a 4080 laptop. Sure it can perform x1.5 better, but at nearly 2x the price, i would pause at the thought. The only thing i miss with the 4070 would be 12gb vram, 8 is not really enough in some less optimized game. Also, the chassis that come with 4070 (legion 7i in my case) is a lot nicer than the cheap Gigabyte G5 that was my old laptop. I really appreciate the sound and visual quality improvement that come with the change.
Price to performance stop matter when you cross certain threshold that is outside your budget. I would suggest Jarrod make some vids on laptops that are good for their price range, i think that would be for the best. A laptop that could reach 20 usd per frame would not be exactly exciting to an average person if it cost 5k usd to purchase for example. That is a lot of money.
I would recommend that if you come from anything 3060 and up, don't. But if you come from 3050 and below, it does make a large change, esp since 4070 chassis are usually higher end model that have some nice features that come along if the budget allow it.
Looking for a upgrade too my g14 2021 but with a price of between £2,600-3k for a 4080 I think ill sit this gen out
you upgraded from the 3060ti to this 4070? oh brother....
@@manuelmunguia616 no, from a laptop 3060 80w to 4070 laptop. The gain is large for me, since it has better speaker , wifi and screen. 3060ti doesnt exist on laptop.
Wait, so why not buy 3070ti laptop? Even the budget models like the nitro 5 pack top tier displays (1440p 165hz 100% srgb panel with at least 300 to 330nit brightness), USB-C charging, pretty decent speakers, good keyboard, great upgradability (more than the legions even), etc. Infact, my 3070ti laptop costed me half as much as a 4070 one in my place. And I was coming from a 1650 + 4600h ideapad 3 gaming laptop.
Also, as you move up the tiers the scamminess of gaming laptops start to increase. For example, compare lovelace's gains to pascal's 1070. The gtx 1070 outright doubled the 970m's performance if even more than doubled it. It almost trippled vram and all that for 15% more power draw and kept largely the same price. THAT is a generational leap, not this pathetic rtx 4080's improvement over the rtx 3070ti (yes, the 4080 is really the 4070ti of laptops and the 3070ti is the real rtx 3070m as its the same desktop 3070 chip). Infact, it really should've packed 16gb of vram for its asking price.
And the current rtx 4090 simply has too low of a power draw. It should be around 230w and thats entirely possible considering 3 years ago we had 200w laptop GPU's.
@@siyzerix hahahahhaah brother i have the same one. i got it for 1340 usd what about you
Unfortunately the "just spend more for 4080" didnt reach the box retailers ears. I'm seeing on average a $500-$700 price difference from 4070 to 4080. Also the laptops that come with 4k screens pushes the price to the $3200-$3500 range. You can get a 4070 i9 (H) for under $2400 from most places. Also for me I prefer thin and light laptops.

But like if a 4070 is like 1500 usd or 1700 usd max then it may be better in terms of cost per frame.
So if I'm understanding this correctly, if I'm deciding between a model of the ROG Zephyrus M16 would I be better off getting the 4070 version with the slimmer profile/thermals of the Zephyrus? The 4080 would thermal throttle and wouldn't be as powerful because of the 145W power limit?
At that point if form factor isn't THAT important to me, would it just make sense to bite the bullet and get the ROG Strix Scar 16 with the 4080 with it having 175W?
That what I was thinking too, the 4080 is in the same form factor/cooling setup as a 4070, but pushes 40-75 more watts.. it's probably less likely to thermal throttle on the 4070 so would it make better sense to get the 70 for long term?
The reason this comparison doesn't work is that a 4080 is almost always $700 more and is usually featured in totally different laptop bodies. We are talking about much thicker machines. For laptops, portability is king even more so than power. So if you have a 100W 4070 laptop you are likely in a significantly better laptop sweet spot than 4080 laptops for price, power, portability, and battery. I love a chonky powerful laptop as much as the next tech nerd on youtube, but I also recognize the slimmer, more usable machine is a better consumer option
Different laptop chassis? Pretty much every 4070 laptop, that I know of, can also be found with a 4080 variant.
The price is retarded though. An upgrade cost of more than a full desktop 4070ti, which uses the same chip as the laptop 4080, is just scalping.

Wait till you compare lovelace's gains to pascal's gains. Pascal outright doubled performance over maxwell at every tier except the xx50 class tier. And even that was a 45 to 55% boost to performance.
The gtx 1070 nearly trippled the 970m's 3gb vram and doubled its performance all for slightly more energy use. The 150w rtx 2070 super was a nice 40% improvement over the 1070 for mostly similar prices.

So either way lovelace is a fail on the low to midrange in terms of performance improvement. And even at the high end, its performance improvements pale in comparison to pascal.
Just for reference, during pascal we had SLI 1070 and 1080 laptops. So you can imagine the mockery they made out of maxwell's mobile GPU's.

Other than DLSS3 my 3070 Ti is basically the same as the 4070.
This year is pretty underwhelming GPU-size, since you need to bump one tier (70 to 80) to get considerably better performance.
Only the CPUs got a nice improvement, but partially thanks to "raw power" since last year "H" CPUs were prevalent (the Alder Lake "HX" CPUs did not see widespread use).
This year both Intel and AMD decided to just release slightly power limited Desktop CPUs and their top tier Mobile offering.
The only advantage in 4070 is AV1 enconder, which is irrelevant if you don´t work with videos or stream.
Have you actually tested them against one another? In all of my testing, the 4070 beat the 3070ti by ~10%+ *before* frame-gen. The gap has seemingly only gotten wider with driver updates too.
With DLSS3, of course, the results are incomparable altogether. Regardless, the generational gap *should* have been larger, but I suppose a premium is to be paid for innovation. Dev’s very well may eventually begin to rely on technologies such as frame-gen for more and more graphically demanding titles in the future (perhaps a few series’ down the line), when games become near-impossible to run through traditional means. By that time, such technology will no doubt be heavily developed and matured into a state that it wouldn’t make much sense *not* to use it. However, for the time being, I suppose said premium is to be paid for the possibility of future innovation, which kinda sucks.
Again, the generational leap should have been larger, regardless.
that's surely not true because all independ benchmarks show that the 4070 is much better...Sorry
Unfortunately, no. The 4070 is still 5-15% faster on average than a 3070ti in pure rasterized-performance.
However, to be fair, that *is* quite close considering the generational gap, relatively speaking (before frame-gen, at least).

Thank you for the advice kind sir.
Hey Jarrod, will you review the Aorus 16 2023? I couldn't find any reviews of it even the Aorus website doesn't feature any review articles or anything of the sort
This generation the best options are a 4060 or 4080. 4050 has only 6 gb vram and is pretty dismal. 4060 is a good balance between affordable and vram. 4070 is only 10% more performance than 4060 and way far off from the 4080 in terms of performance. 4090 is for people who aren't worried about budget and usually go for the best of the best anyway.
The biggest decisions are between a 4060 and 3070Ti. While the 3070Ti is definitely better without considering FG, the newer gen laptops offer better CPU solutions for people who want to use their laptop as an actual laptop and not a desktop replacement.
Yeah, but 4060 laptops also cost more than 3070ti laptops, and generally the 3070ti laptops pack a similar tier of CPU to the 4060 ones (remember the 13th gen H series is just 12th gen rebranded). And if the 4060 is barely 12% faster than the 3060 at 1440p, well the 3070ti will be a very solid 15-20% faster than the 4060 at 1440p.
Best bet is to just grab a 3070ti laptop which already gives you performance very close to a 3080ti mobile and just wait it out till rtx 5000 for what is hopefully an actual upgrade.
And don't put your hopes on AMD. They're going to disappoint once again. Their rx7600S already costs more than 3060 laptops yet performs the same.
@@siyzerix I'm moreso comparing a 7840 hs + 4060 combo to a 6800H + 3070Ti combo. I want battery life and portability as well. @@RyomaE28 Yeah, but the nitro 5's not that much worse than most options either. For starters it packs the full power 3070ti 150w. And for the lack in battery life you do get a 2.5' bay. Its also a fair bit cheaper than most other full power 3070ti laptops and even 4060 and 4050 laptops.

Hey @JarrodsTech,are you gonna review the Acer Helios 16 (not neo) in the future ?
I want to, but I haven't been able to get one yet.
@@JarrodsTech woah thanks a lot for replying Jarrod ! I own one and have some issues. I hope your model doesnt run into issues ! I love your highly informative and entertaining videos ! Waiting for more reviews in the future ,
I just picked up an Aorus 15x with 13900hx and rtx 4070. Only paid $1200, and it runs games fine. It's also not needing to render 4k but only 144p. I put the extra money in an m2 drive and more ram.
Who has 4070 in a laptop, he does not laugh in the circus...🤷
Hi Jarrods 🙂,
i have a question for you that can save my day.
I search for your reviews but i don't find a review about the Asus TUF f15 2023 with i7-12700H and RTX 4060, so i need an advise from you.
Is better the Aorus 17X (2022) with i7-12700H and rtx 3070 Ti or the Asus TUF f15(2023) with i7-12700H and RTX 4060.
They both have 16GB RAM and my doubt are not only about the performance in gaming, but also the temperature that they reach, their cooling system and the materials (because this will be my pc for a lot of years😅).
I ask this because i buy right now the ASUS but the keyboard reach very high temperature, and seeing the Aorus at the same price i was wondering if it was worth returning the ASUS to get the AORUS at only 60$ more.
I have a dilemma. Last year I bought a MSi 3070ti i7 laptop with a QHD screen. I bought an external screen and mostly play on that.
My question is, is it worth it to upgrade to a MSI vector 4080 i9 (12th) with FHD screen?
Since I'm rarely play on the laptop screen, the laptop monitor res shouldn't matter anyway, right?
Yes totally
The problem with this is the larger liquid cooled laptop. Once you start factoring in cost and smaller laptops I'm betting these numbers would change. A lot. I bought one with a 4070 based on sales price and form factor. I would be more interested in the same comparison on a more thermally constrained system. My 4070 starts to thermal throttle after a while, I'm sure a 4080 would throttle even worse.
I’m having long game sessions on Legion Pro 7 with 4080 and there’s no problems with the throttling. All works fine and gameplay is really smooth.
Ouch. Nvidia really upselling the RTX 4080 12GB laptop here with the 4070's weak 8GB vram buffer. At least the 8GB VRAM it isn't as much of a concern for 1080p on laptops compared to desktop where you have bigger monitors... until you add a larger external display to your laptop.
I wait for the next generation and see if pricing drops or if there are good sales.
Nice review but I really wish you'd compare these for generative AI such as image gen
4070 vs 3080 please!
We don't have any 3080 laptops here to test with :(
