The gear oil in your FJ Cruiser keeps friction to a minimum and ensures the long life of your differential gears. Changing the oil in the rear differential is an easy maintenance activity that keeps your off road rig motoring forward, saves money and allows you to learn a little more about your 4×4 adventure vehicle.
You will find more information about changing your rear differential oil at - www.lastgreatro...
Don't have an FJ Cruiser, these step also work on other Toyota trucks include Tacoma, 4runner, parado and Lexus gx470
I look this Vid without Sound because my english is bad and dont want to disturb my wife at work - but this Vid is so nice and easy to understand, also without Sound 😃👍
Thanks for the note. 👍👍
Thank you so much for these videos. This is what youtube is for in my opinion. Help people like myself to save money from the stealerships.
Finally someone mentioned something important about the fluid level 😃
thanks for the note.
Leave the oil bottles in the sun for a few hours before you do the job; this will allow the oil to flow a little faster/easier. If it's cold out, put them (sealed, of course) in a bucket of warm water
Great video, I changed my front and rear diff oil. I wouldn’t have attempted this without your video.
Thanks!! I did this change, the spark plugs and the motor oil changes all thanks to your videos!! very very clear!! Appreciate it; I would not have attempted this without your videos.
My question is, do you know where can I find a good resource on how to change the Transmission Fluid? There seems to be all sort of information out there. Even that it never needs to be changed.
Tks!
@alabamafbfan1985 you are absolutely right! You don't want to empty all the gear oil only to find that you can't fill it or drive your rig to a shop for assistance.
Please do a video on greasing the driveline zerks and general inspection (undercarriage, drivelines, CV shaft, tie rods), it would be very helpful! I have a 1,400 relocating trip (CA to Bellingham, WA) coming up in two weeks and your videos saved me $470 from taking it to the dealer! Just became a "$2 Video Producer", hilarious!
Did this today on my 1987 Toyota 4WD pickup. Bothe front and rear differentials. All that's left is the manual transmission and transfer case. Used Lucas 75w-90 because it was local. I usually use Amsoil.
231MasseyFerguson it is nice how info and parts transfer across many Toyota platforms.
Over filling can lead to some problems like leaking seals but if you follow the instructions in the video you will add the correct amount of gear oil to your fj cruiser. أبو داحم
@lastgreatroadtrip Can't wait for that video. A visual walk through would really help with the front diff..
Nice video, very informative and easy to follow!
In some differential applications, a friction modifier additive is necessary to reduce chatter. Using Amsoil Severe Gear® we did not need an additive for our applications. Check out Amsoil Slip Lock Differential Additive on their website for more info.
Thanks for the note and really glad you like our videos.
Another very good reason to take the fill plug out first is incase it is rounded off or seized shut to where it won't come off you still have oil in there and can continue to drive.
@ihoppy Thank you very much for supporting us through the Micro Producer program. If we can find a shop that will let us put the rig on their lift we'll try to get a video out on keeping everything greasy
on ours, Toyota recommends checking it every 15K for condition and level. If your towing with your FJ Cruiser, Toyota recommends replacement every 15K. Check you owners manual for manufacture's recommendations on your specific model and year.
Clear to the point thank you!!!
Thanks for the vid!! I hope the two diffs on my 88 4runner v6 are this simple to change the fluid on!
I like to raise the driver side a little for a more complete drain. Nice work!
Good tip!
yeah.... but we are getting ready to swap out the rear-end with a Currie / Ford 9" so we'll be in the same boat as you... might have to do a little custom plug placement on the Currie. Thanks for the note.
The rear differential is how the power from the transmission is sent to the wheels... The ring and pinion gears in the diff generate heat, as they distribute the power to the rear wheels, that eventually breaks down the gear oil. Check your vehicle's maintenance schedule to see how often the manufacture recommends changing the oil.
Putting your bottles in hot water before and during makes quicker filling.
@BORN2LOSE13 Check your owners manual for the specific weight recommended for your year.
We have recorded a front diff oil change... however we have to redo it since the video is not very clear. The steps are the same and the same gear oil works front and back. removing the plugs requires an allen rather than socket. The fill hole is pretty tight so we ran a long hose and funnel from the engine compartment and let gravity do the work.
if anyone is curious how to get that bottle attachment search "flotool" online. thanks for the video OP
There's an easier way to add fluid without attachment or pump.
You loosen the fill plug first , because if u drain it first and cant loosen the fill, you are basically fkd...
@davidhchiem Thanks... Glad you like it... Look for a transfer case oil change coming soon.
@fjchaos07 Thanks for the comment and really glad you liked it... Transmission... hummmm nothing planned but we'll have to look into it now that you mentioned it.
Did mine following these procedures and everything went smoothly! Thanks. I did have one question though...any idea why mine took almost the full 4 quarts? Mine is the 2007 6MT with the e-locker also and I think I had like 4oz left, max, before it started to dribble out the fill hole.
If your truck was not resting on flat level ground it can affect when full is reached.
My garage floor has a verrrry slight drain towards the garage door. That said, I know too much in an engine is bad...what about the diffs, tranny, and t-case? I've put a grand total of 3 miles on it since the change.
The same holds true since pressure can build up but a few ounce is not a lot and the rear diff breather is designed to release the pressure as the rear end heats up... A slight off level shouldn't make much difference and if you're concerned you can find a flat location and open the fill plug and check the oil level again. The nice thing about the way these diffs and transfer cases are designed is that full is right at the fill plug and excess can just drain until it is leveled off.
@@lastgreatroadtrip Ok thanks. I will open her up and let her drain a bit, if I can find a truly flat spot.
@ruebarb1 Really glad it helped. Thanks for the comment.
Fill plug first has nothing to do with breath. It’s to make sure you can fill before you drain.
Very helpful video
Yet another great video. Well done! Keep them coming.
you can poke a hole in the bottom of the bottle and hold it plugged with ur thumb untill you turn the bottle upside down...then it pours out down the tube like a beer bong
thank you .. look like i can do it myself
Good video! Thanks a lot
@Xpingwinz Thank you... Glad you like it.
@Motorfordtoyota Thanks for the comment and glad you like it...
@ojeda112 thank you... glad you liked it.
@cavemanjoe79 thank you for the note... that one may be a while. Our list is pretty long and Transmission oil change is not on the maintenance schedule for awhile.
Bro what is that background machine sound it’s so soothing
ha :-)
where do you get the new gaskets from?
@YeuLaKho Glad it helped you out.
@lastgreatroadtrip Awesome. Looking forward to it.
Another good reason to undo the filler plug first, is that if you do the drain plug first, and cant get the filler plug open, you wont be up shit creek without a paddle after you've drained all your oil and not being able to get the filler plug open.
+gullf1sk that can ruin a day.
Awesome Video Now I Know How to Change it On My FJ... Thank You Very Much!!! :)... I will be waiting for your upcoming video on transfer case oil changing... (are you going to do a video on changing your transmission flush? and on the 2007 FJ how do you check the transmission flush?
If I heard correctly, the drain and fill plug bolts for the rear diff to take them off, the socket is a 24 mm right?
correct... you can always check our website for extra info www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/4x4-tech/how-to-maintenance/changing-rear-differential-oil-fj-cruiser/
Good tips 👍
thank you!
Great video! Hope someone is able to tackle the challenge of doing a transmission fluid change on a 5.7 Tundra. Here in Mexico, no dealer shop is willing to touch my transmission for this procedure. It already has 250K kilometers, and I am worried! What to do?! I already called Toyota and no logical response to, "leave it like that". Any fluid with condensation, even if it is a synthetic, must be affected. HELP!
maybe if you can drive it to san diego ca. on your roadtrip there are some toyota dealers than can flush your system and replaced the filter, its all worthit
Buy a maintenance Manuel tools fluid an filter an do it yourself or at least drain your current fluid an fill back up with new fluid ;)
DDakotaRT98 not familiar enough with Tundra transmissions to offer much help. Check over on the Toyota Nation Forum. You should be able to find a writeup or two on changing fluids. Then take a couple of hours and do it yourself. Great feeling when you do it yourself. Good luck
Check my channel if you are interested learning about tundra transmission fluid change.
I think your 3 years to late for giving any advice . lol
@ivanhvg Thank you for the kind words and glad the videos helped. For questions on an FJ Cruiser we recommend FJCruiserForum (dot) com lots of good tech info there.
Didn't catch that ... did you say 24mm socket wrench?
Is the gear oil weight the same for all FJ Cruisers?
Also do you plan to do a video write up on the the front diff oil change?
How to change the front wheel bearing and the timing belt, please make video.
onesri thanks for the comment... we tend to make videos on the maintenance we do on our FJ Cruiser. Right not our front wheel bearings and timing belt are good. But who knows.
thanks
@cavemanjoe79 might be a while before we need to change the transmission fluid.
do you know if any of the differential fluid container come in or will fit one those easy-tube-filling fluid things? and what is it called exactly lol
There's an easier way to add fluid without attachment or pump.
Great information thx 👍🏼👍🏼
Glad you liked it! Thank you for letting us know!!!!
Last Great Road Trip yes thx I just got my 07 FJ Cruiser with 100k miles with this video I manage 2 do alot simple maintenance myself thx for this great video keep the good work 👍🏼🎉👍🏼🎉
How long life is this? Is it worth it to change it for a vehicle with 200k miles with unknown service history?
it is always a good idea to get your truck on a regular maintenance interval.
Is there a transmissiom oil change video in the wotks?
Almost half million views for this! congrats but IF YOU WANT A 2 MILLION VIEWS you know what to post, don't you? YES, EVERYBODY WANTS THE 201O FJ CRUISER TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE, STEP BY STEP! that would be the Real Mc Coy
Thanks for the idea.
@TheFreakyfixed87 picked them up at the parts counter of our local toyota dealer
tu...just bought a pathy 01 needed some info
do u have a lift on your fj?
if so... how much and what brand?
thanks!
I have the 2wd Fj not the 4wd do I do the same thing ? same oil ? Cant find this answer anywhere... thanks so much !!!
Thanks for the question. Same process holds true for the rear end on 2wd and 4wd. if you're in doubt check the owners manual for oil viscosity and amounts.
@subiemon thank you very much.
How often should this be changed? Thanks!
What if one breaks the fill plug bolt like I have a couple of days ago. Is it possible to slowly, painstakingly put oil at the top of the front cover by removing the top 3 bolts out of 10?
David
Alberta
don't go there... get the fill plug removed.
Hi guys I need some help, I have a toyota prado kzj95 series 2003 Turbo Diesel, when I activate the 4x4 (4H) and make a slow closed turn, the front diferential makes a metalic "clack" sound every complete turn of the wheel, I tried it on gravel, grass and asphalt same sound, checked with 2 other prados and none of them had it. The diferential oil level was ok, what do you think it could be?? I'm taking it to a shop but im tired of getting riped off, thanks for any help provided!
What size socket for drain plug? When you said the size you already broke it lose so you didn’t hear the size?
thx for the question... follow the links in the description. should have all the info you need.
@@lastgreatroadtrip got it thanks! Also I just went out to buy couple new crush washers. And your local auto parts store doesn’t carry these. Either have to order them from Toyota, Amazon, etc. I spent an hour in Oriellys and autozone and they have nothing. Some that are close but not exact same size. Should be 24x18x2.5mm thick. At least this is what I ran into here in my local town. 👍
Gearbox oils is same as differential oils?
yes... gear oil, diff oil, gear lube typically refers to oils used in transfer cases, differentials, and manual transmission.
Really nice
+MUHAMMAD AZAAN Thank you!
In manual booklet of 2007 fj cruiser calls for straight SAE 90 is ok to use 75w 90?
I've always used 75w 90 in our 2008 FJ.
what would you call that hose adapter? i'm trying to look for one online without luck. thanks for this video!
+đẹp trai check out our website's instructions. I think there is a link to one along with a list of other things we used. www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/4x4-tech/how-to-maintenance/changing-rear-differential-oil-fj-cruiser/
The owner's manual in my 2008 FJ cruiser lists different weights for the front and rear diff. But it lists 75W 90 for the transfer case. Would I be okay using the same 75-90 for front rear diffs and transfer case?
A tool list would be nice. Especially since you made a noise removing the drain plug, and I couldn't understand what mm socket you are using. Could you add a TOOL LIST in your description? Please?
you asked... you get www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/4x4-tech/how-to-maintenance/changing-rear-differential-oil-fj-cruiser/
Thank you very much. :-D
+Last Great Road Trip Okay, could you tell me what tools I need to remove the differential cover and replace fluids on a 2000 GMC Jimmy SLT, 4.3, 4WD?
That one is a little out of our knowledge base. But you may want to consider tinyurl.com/gmcubvp We use it for our Currie / Ford 9" which has no drain plug or cover. Hope you find what you need.
So I have a rare vehicle? LOL, just kidding. Thank you for your time, I sincerely appreciate it. Just need to change the rear didderential fluid so I know it's in top running condition, so I can sell it and buy another Jeep. :-D
Good
Thanks
This is the third video to change the oil and everyone has different numbers on how many quarts it needs
Always check your owners manual for exact fluid type and quantity. Even on the same vehicle, the manufacturer may make year to year changes. The owners manual will usually list out the fluids (quantity / type / viscosity) requiring regular maintenance.
Great Video! How long did you run this Amsoil before changing it again?
I usually change out about every 35K miles. The oil may still be good but all that heat from hard 4x4 trails and dust... easy gear oil change is cheap insurance. Thanks for the note.
Could you post which Torque wrench you use?
How many of those bottles are needed to complete this to spec? Thanks!
it varies a little by year so check the owners manual for the amount of fluid required. Each bottle is 1 quart.
How often are you supposed to change your rear differential oil?
Always check your owners manual... we change ours about every 35k depending on how much off road or stressful driving we've put on the truck
Love the tune, lol!
:-)
Last Great Road Trip - You have a link for the original track? I'd like to get it
The end credits starting 6:14 lists all the music and attribution info used in the video. Hope the info is still accurate since this video has been out for number of years.
Last Great Road Trip - thanks man! Great video as well. Helped me with my dad's Hilux
That's your CV joints that are gone.
Is there a difference between the drain gasket and fill gasket?
if i recall correctly the same gasket is used for both on the rear. But you can double check with your local dealer.
hello, what do you call the flexible tube? i cant find it on our local machine shop...
It's just a funnel cap with some clear plastic hose on it.
When you changed the fluid, did you have to add LSD additive/friction modifier along with the gear oil? Mine doesn't come with a factory locker, so I figured probably not, but I was just curious.
No additives/modifiers were added beyond those in the gear oil itself. I did not experienced any shutter or noise following the gear lube change. Everything continued to operate just like new.
Awesome thanks! Love your repair videos, keep up the good work!
Thank you!!
On my FJ I have a locking differential, using the modifier can't hurt so I bought it.
@MrKaoVue :-) check the link to our website in the description. The writeup has more info and I think has what you're looking for... You Tube won't let up put a link in here.
On the owners manual say's that my 2012 needs 75w 85 gl5. Can I use the 75w 90 gl5?
MrRedskins0021 Most folks we know with newer FJCs use 75w 90 and no problems. Not sure why Toyota went with non-standard grades on some of their oils. Unless you take it to a dealer for service, you'll end up with more standard viscosity put in by the shop since is covers the OEM requirement.
Last Great Road Trip Thank you
thanks for this. at what milage do you change your rear diff on this FJ?
Check out the maintenance schedule on our website: www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/4x4-tech/gear-review/the-rig-that-gets-under-the-skin/
thanks!
what are some symptom if wrong oil was put in? i.e synthetic/ non synthetic, weight
winkawak spontaneous combustion.
Where do I get the new gaskets at ?
Thanks for the question. I've always used OEM gaskets and get them from either a local Toyota dealer or on-line at Toyota of Dallas.
is better to go with the original oil brands , dont try those alternative brand oils ...use the original toyota oil for limited sleep diffs and valvoline or mobil as original lubricants for normal diffs...dont try ams or cheaper alternatve oil in toyota
thanks for sharing your opinion on oils. It is key that you ensure the fluids meet your trucks requirements which are usually listed out in the owner's manual.
Drain plug, great idea wth do i not have one. lol. Time to start drilling....Mwwhahaha!
it's nothing compared to changing the diaper on a two year old after a chilly dog :-)
The song from Crash Bandicoot😂
You are a lucky dog! Your dif has a drain plug, my Ford does not....
Thats funny mine was a 15/16 socket
Geez, can the intro be any longer..............
@vtownboxingfan - we have a list of tools and parts at www.lastgreatroadtrip/?p=9701
some fj owners said to me if you change your rear and front diff oil it will make all kind of noises ..
instead just top it of ..
which is better in your opinion..
btw I never changed my differentials oil since I bought my fj brand new ..
it has done 120k miles now ..
2008 fj 4wd
Mundher Al Lawati if you go with a gear lube that meets the specifications in the owner's manual you should not hear any clatter in the gears... There are additional additives that can be used if it becomes a problem but we never had any trouble.
The Toyota maintenance schedule recommends changing front and rear diff fluid every 15k miles (that is a little excessive unless you're towing or lots of off road driving). But your gears do generate a lot of heat and will break down the oils and additives. A complete change is the only way to ensure you're gears are receiving the lubrication they need.
Thanks for the question.
+Last Great Road Trip thanks for your reply..
I recently opened my front and rear diffs and it was at 80%
so I toped it of with toyota diff oil ..
never did anything before that for my diffs ..
everything is ok and no problems right now ..
but I guess its better to change it compeletly as you said ..
thanks alot ..
Beautiful girl..
:-)
