- Please allow me to go off-topic for a few minutes to talk about losing weight and getting healthier. It's important for me to acknowledge that, for the vast majority of us, the reason we become overweight (if we are overweight) is that we eat more than we should. As a young man I grew to a height of just over six feet and, at first, I was very thin. Over the years I gained weight without growing taller anymore. I believed the common refrain which said that the only reason a person gains weight as they get older is that their metabolism changes. And, by the time I was over 40 years old, I started to accept that weight loss would be difficult or even impossible.
Well, I eventually realized that the only reason I was so much heavier than I had been when I was in my 20s was that, while I was in my 20s, I was eating far less food on a regular basis. I reduced my intake as a bit of an experiment and I shouldn't have been surprised that, indeed, despite my middle-aged metabolism, I was able to lose weight quickly. I didn't have to stop eating a certain kind of food. I didn't have to start an extreme exercise program. I merely had to eat less. (Please note, while I'm just as prone as any average American to eating unhealthy foods or too much food, there are other lifestyle choices that I didn't have to adjust. Specifically, I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke.)
Of course, I cannot tell you what to do in order to experience weight loss the way I did. Your body may not respond the way mine has. You may have other health concerns which are far different from mine. Perhaps the simple act of eating less will give you headaches or make you sleepy or... I don't know what. You may want to talk to a doctor and/or a fitness expert before changing your lifestyle. But I didn't and I'm fine.
Consider drinking a glass of water whenever you have the urge to snack between meals. Don't have a late night snack before bed. Learn to recognize when you've had enough for lunch or dinner and then stop rather than have another helping. This doesn't seem like drastic stuff to me. What DOES seem drastic, to me, is watching a co-worker have a jumbo burrito during a mid-morning break from work, two hours BEFORE the lunch break. Come on, folks!
Meanwhile, I'm pleased to let you know that the next episode of The Good Timekeeping Show has already been recorded and will be released soon. Thanks for watching.
