This upbeat R&B dance music started getting more and more popular as disco was winding down. Skating rinks and teen clubs, house parties started becoming more popular....the music and vibe is coming from "Studio 54" vibe that was spreading across the country, thanks to movies like Saturday Night Fever and then Beatstreet/Breakin'.... Alot of the producers of this genre of music were old disco DJ's, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who were originally working for Prince/The Time. Another group I forgot:
The Whispers - Keep on loving me/rocksteady/love thing

Yeah, we skated off of it a little bit back in the day. I’ll tell you what we really did with this song. It was all about “everybody get up”, ! This was more popular on the dance floor more than anything. When this came on you grabbed your partner, you was ready. Your outfit was on point. Her hair was on pointand the two of you got on the floor AND GOT BUSY ! To see which couple had the best steps and best outfits to match hair together natural looking all good. His fit is on point. Her dress is killing it either Afro puffs or braids no, no sweetheart this was a dance floor song ! And by the way, Rick James had his hand in on some of the producing. This is all Motown stuff. You can hear The Temptations in the background and you can hear Rick saying My name is “Slick…. Rick” …..baby ! Yeah, you know Rick James brought her out when he heard her at the motel Studios. He was in the studio next-door to her studio and came running down the hallway saying who the hell is that singing the rest of history he produced her first album. This was her third and they also did fire and desire on his album. The same year in Rick James and Tina Marie had a relationship in real life. There is a little history lesson
