Teena was the first caucasian woman to jump into the R&B mainstream. She was daring and gained the respect and loyalty of the black community. Rick James produced her, but she definitely added her own thing to it. Fantastic. I saw one of her concerts which she opened for Madonna. Bad mistake by the queen of pop. Teena blew her away.
She was slept down by the mainstream in general! I think black folks were the only ones that really embraced her! And she embraced us back as well! That’s why she still beloved even years after her death!
Black people ADORE, and I mean ADORE Teena Marie. If there were only one "Invited to the BBQ" pass to give out. She would get it before anyone. Matter of fact, she wouldn't because she has always belonged to us. I have never in my life heard anyone accuse her of being a vulture or a leach to black music. We always known this was in her soul and she has never ever disrespected us or the game. RIP to the Ivory Queen of Soul. There will be no other
Largely unknown to the mainstream, Teena was music royalty in the black community. She was simply known as "Lady T"! Here are some of my favorites! : Portuguese Love, Aladdin's Lamp, Square Biz, Behind The Groove, Tune In Tomorrow, Have My Cake And Eat It Too, Oooo La La La, Casanova Brown, and the Rick James and Teena duet, Fire & Desire! There are so many more! Lady T was a treasure! RIP
Lover Girl charted #4 on Top 100 Hits right under Madonna Material Girl. She just never got the MASSIVE fame that Madonna got. She was MOTOWN, with Rick, after all....and they were pushing Diana Ross who was charting Top 40 at the time. So they only released two singles that charted high.
Hi Arthur! I will admit that I didn't know anything much about her other than her name and this great song. When this was popular, I spent a lot of weekend nights in nightclubs, walking around dancefloors - beer bottle in hand, chest pumped, and sporting a somewhat conservatively spiked 'do. Ah, to be young again! This song is one of a few that always brings that happy memory to mind. I should investigate more of her music!
Teena can SANG. Once you dive more into her music you will see that her lane is primarily R&B. While black artists strived to “cross over” to mainstream popularity Teena crossed over to us. She performed this song on Soul Train! The first time we heard Teena was on a duet with Rick James. You HAVE to react to that. It will blow your mind. Both of them are amazing on that song.
I remember seeing her on Soul Train. Don Cornelius called her Vanilla Soul Sister. We she begin to sing, the dancers went crazy! It was a beautiful site to see ❤
Teena's music style was inspired by Rick James, who was rumored to be her main squeeze at the time. He definitely was her friend and mentor. She earned the two coolest nicknamed, Lady T and the Ivory Queen of Soul. RIP
Teena was imho the female Prince being a Singer Multi instrumentalist Songwriter Arranger Producer and even though she started with and was mentored by Rick James her Music is One of a Kind
She's the ivory queen of soul! Blue eyed soul sister! She's funk,R&B, and soul rolled up in a beautiful package! Don't label her rocker chick just because she's white and plays a guitar here. Her other songs will show you how amazing diverse she is.
I came on here to say the same thing. Tina Marie was Soul and R&B she definitely wasn't rock and roll. Plus "Rock your World" was just a phrase that was used back then.. I mean they compared her to Pat Benatar???
Mary Christine Brockert, aka Teena Marie, released over a dozen albums in her life, including one in 2013 that was released posthumously. "Lover Girl" was her only Top 10 hit on the Hot 100, but she had a slew of R&B hits in her career. If you want to go down this rabbit hole, try "I Need Your Lovin", "Ooo La La La", or "Square Biz" for your next one. I would also request that you check out Laura Branigan, who had a string of great songs in the early 80s. "Self Control" is my favorite, but "Gloria" and "Solitaire" are also bangers. Another great songbird that we lost too soon.
Ooh la la la, Deja Vu, Out on a Limb, Portuguese Lover, If I Were A Bell, Square Biz, Behind the Groove take your pick. Lady T was one of a kind. Her first album had no pictures of her, probably so they could market her to R&B audiences. My suggestion for you is a version of Ooh la la la, I believe it was either Soul Train or The Midnight Special. Dive deep and don't miss her collaborations with Rick James. Peace
Sheila E's 1984 hit "The Glamorous Life" fits in great with this. A group from the disco era also featuring great female musicians was A Taste of Honey, who had a huge 1978 hit with "Boogie Oogie Oogie."
This woman just give me chills. She is a powerhouse of talent. Outstanding voice, awesome performer who gave 100% on stage. Played multiple instruments and composed her own songs. You can tell I’m a big fan, Teena was all soul and it was real. Try “ Square Biz” and for a change of pace try “ Ooo La La” , her range and style is mesmerizing. Enjoy!!❤️
So very happy to see you guys reacting to Teena Marie. She was so talented! Hope you all will eventually check out Fire & Desire (duet with Rick James), Portugese Love, Square Biz and my personal favorite, Out on a Limb.
FIRE AND DESIRE!!! I have been suggesting this song for over a year. I still listen to this song several times a week. I think it shows off the power of her voice better than any of her other songs.
@B Gallagher If you're talking about that infamous BET performance,, I'm pretty sure they were high or something when they did that lol. It was still iconic. It was a moment...
@B Gallagher @Ash Lee Can I saw the infamous BET performance in real time. That was not Rick or Teena at their best. I would suggest the studio version, recorded a good 30 years before that performance. It is absolutely beautiful.
Teena Marie was pure soul, jazz, and funk. A tiny woman in stature with a enormous voice. A protege of Rick James. I love this woman and miss her miserably. She is R and B Royalty. Rip Ms. Lady T.
Fun fact..she was signed by Berry Gordy and performed with Rick James as well! Alot of ppl assumed she was black bc of her sound, and was the first white female to be on Soul Train in 1979. Square Pegs was another big hit.
Tina Marie is a vocal giant on the level of Chaka Kahn, listen to any of her slow songs. She is not really a rocker, she was a Motown artist and her R&B songs are classics.
I also was just outta high school when Teena Marie hit the charts. She fueled a LOT of house parties. My sister and I used to pit Chaka Khan music against Teena Marie, (Lady T being my choice.) She was just an awesome talent.

Oooh yes, Teena is the queen of blue eyed soul. A true legend of R&B, Rock, funk... I had the pleasure of seeing her and Rick James in concert when I was 17. She has so many great hits. Some of my personal favs are Deja Vu (I’ve been here before) , Oooh La La La and Behind The Groove .
Teena Marie was a protege of Rick James. When I first heard her on KBLX "The Quiet Storm" the urban contemporary station in Berkeley CA, some forty years ago, listeners did not believe that she was not Black. She was a definitely a great talent and you could not deny that voice. Teena Marie deserved all the airplay she received. Unfortunately, she left this world much too young.
You haven’t even scratched the surface with the depth of Teena “Lady T” Marie’s talent. Check out “ I Need Your Lovin” and “Fire and Desire’ duet with Rick James. You won’t be disappointed!
Jay and Amber, I have been following you two for several years and I finally figured out how to join. I am so happy to finally have been able to join. This is amazing Song, I remember it from my youth. Thank you both very much ❤️🙏
Have to listen to her duet with Rick James, Fire and Desire. But be sure to react to the recorded version. She spans rock, soul, R&B and jazz. Teena was always invited to the cookouts.
Check out her Unsung documentary for more info about her. Her friends in High School didn't know she was white until they went to her house and meet her Mom. The record label hid her face on her 1st album so that people would give her a chance. She is one of my all time favorites. Fire & Desire is literally on the radio right now (WDAS).
Teena is legend and I always thought of her as being soul. Just coming from my background, white woman married to black man since 1978, she was dearly loved by the black community. I never heard any of my side of the family listening to Teena, lol. It’s funny, I love classic 70s rock, but I also love R&B and soul music. Best of both worlds, I’m blessed!
Jody Watley- Don’t You Want Me or Looking For A New Love. Jody Watley like Teena Marie was big in the mid to late 80s! Jody can rock and provide as much sass as Teena! She’s an artist you guys haven’t checked out yet, and would love to see your reaction to either one of these two huge chart busting top 5 songs! You guys rock!
Hi Jeff, I also suggested Jody Watley to Jay and Amber for their female Fridays about three months ago with no success. I hope they see your comment and react to Jody Watley’s songs. Greetings from Chicago, IL USA.
Boston Bean...Same! I loved it back then and I was a teen also! It's still vibes💯and it really is so cool to see the younger babes watching, enjoying and loving it too!👍❤️🙂
I just KNEW you both would LOVE Teena Marie's _Lovergirl_ !! So glad y'all decided to review it!! I always have to listen TWICE myself!! :) A little fact about Teena Marie: *She was a three-time Grammy Award nominee!!*
So glad you finally got around to Teena Marie. I suggested this song in letter I sent on your second unboxing video. She’s not only a phenomenal singer, but she’s an exceptional guitar player. There just weren’t that many female funk artists in the 70s and 80s that also played and wrote their own music. The only other that I can think of is Klymax which was an all female funk band in the 80s.
She was so awesome! RIP Teena Marie. Y’all need to check out her duet with Rick James, “Fire and Desire”-this woman hit notes you didn’t know was possible…absolutely gives you chills in the best way😊
I'm so happy you finally discovered my girl Teena Marie! Y'all need to listen to more of her music such as Square Biz, Portuguese Love, Behind the Groove, The Ballad of Cradle Rob & Me...so many great songs. She had such a great powerful soulful voice for such a small woman.
So happy finally Teena Marie!!! Teena had soul flowing thru her veins. Danced “the hustle” to her hit “Behind the Groove” in high school and went thru all kinds of emotions with “Fire and Desire” duet with Rick James, one of the greatest love songs of all times❤️RIP Teena and Rick🙏🏼 Always love and enjoy ur videos❤️
Thank you guys big time for giving us some Teena Marie!!! The legendary Vanilla Child taken from us far too soon. Please try "You make love like Springtime" and "Square Biz"
OMG, there is this tune and many others by Teena that are awesome!! My personal favorites - "Portuguese Love" and the duet with Rick James, "Love And Desire" an absolute classic Ol' School R & B tune!! That song really showcases both their phonemenal voices!!
Lady T!!! Glad you got to her. This is one of her good, fast songs; others include "Behind the Groove" and "Square Biz;" but listen to something like "Out On A Limb" to really hear what she can do on an emotional level. The only voice that can make me cry.
One of the very few white artists in history that was far more popular with the black community than the white community. She was not only popular, but downright beloved by the African-American community, who accepted her as one of their own. She didn't do "blue-eyed soul" like other white artists who toyed with an R&B sound, she just did straight-up soul, period.
And she didn't do blue eyed soul because there is no such thing. Just as there is no such thing as brown eyed metal to be applied to bands like Living Colour. Stop the madness.
Teena was and is AMAZING. This was a different sound for Teena. She was straight R'n'B. Listen to Portuguese Love, Behind the Groove, Deja Vu, Square Biz, I Need Your Lovin', Jammin', Ooo La La La... OMG so many.
YAAAAYYYYYY!!!! IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!! Singer, musician, songwriter, ALL that! You have opened a GOLD MINE! (Can you tell that I'm a Teena Marie fan?) Amber...you would LOVE her early work. I would suggest "Deja Vu, I Been Here Before" 💞...especially for female Friday ; and Jay, you would really love "Square Biz"! I'm excited for you...really I am! 🤩 Teena Marie has a very deep catalog...a beautiful one...way deeper than top 100. One of her first hits, "Behind the Groove", you both would really enjoy too. Have fun.
Tina’s voice is amazing! She was rock and R&B and funk! She worked with Rick James a lot, he produced some of her music and they also had a romantic relationship! ❤️❤️
loved seeing you two react to this.i remember when this video was getting regular MTV airplay back in the mid 80s. Teena Marie was a close protege of Rick James.
Yes Yes Yes 🙌 Lady T!!! MUST do her hit “SQUARE BIZ”🔥🔥🔥 That is still my jam!!! She was signed to Motown and initially they did not show her as they were not sure what people would think; they wanted her to be heard first. Rick James produced a lot of her songs and you can really hear it on some. Please continue with Teena Marie; “Behind The Groove” is also an absolute banger! ❤️
Back in the dance clubs in the 80s this was one of the songs that if you were not already out on the dance floor or close enough to get out there quickly you were not getting on it, this was always a big dance favourite, and everyone loved it and you could not just sit while it was playing. Lady T was an absolute legend!!
Kinda cool that you called her a rocker. Shows her versatility. Ultra talented and truly beloved among old school R&B/Funk fans, she's a legend and is truly missed. See the other comments for song suggestions. I know folks already have that covered.
Hello Rob squad family reaction I am new to your channel like what I see but I have a surprise for you. I just watched your Tina Marie reaction and you were saying how she's Rock guess what not true during the late 70s and early 80s Tina Marie was the reigning queen of r&b soul music what you need to listen to is deja vu and dear lover everywhere you went walking down the street sitting in somebody's car at somebody's house all you heard from the late seventies to the early 80s was Tina Marie
This song was her biggest pop hit. Interesting fact, this song was in the US Top 40 at the same time as the song LOVERBOY by Billy Ocean, though the songs had nothing to do with one another. Both were huge hits.
The legendary Teena Marie whose range is incredible, she can rock out and then jump to R & B and move on to Jazz. She definitely one of my favorites. beyond the popular songs there is a volume of great music.
Taylor Dayne! 100%YES! Very soulful voice also and still has it! Saw her on a I heart radio performance in 2017 I think🤔 I've suggested her a few times, unless I've missed it, I have yet to see a reaction to her stuff! But her and Teena Marie are soulful slayers!❤️❤️
Really enjoyed this song, I haven't heard it in years. It used to be one of my favorites. I wonder if she had any influence by Prince? The song has a real Prince vibe. I have only ever heard this on the radio, to see her performing live is really fun, that girl was talented. :)
Teena Marie Prince and Rick James "Came up" together in the early years of their careers, Prince was the opening act for Rick James on his tour in 1980. Jill Jones who was one of Princes Protege's, and is Teena Marie's Cousin, that's how she met Prince.
Rick James is rolling in his grave at the idea that his protégé was influenced by Prince, with whom he had a legendary rivalry...and not a particularly friendly one!
Teena Marie made you get your groove on back in the day...I played her tape so much, it came apart in my cassette deck as I'm ridin around in my Jeep...lol.
Teena Marie collaborated with Rick James professionally, and they were engaged for a short time. The reason I mentioned Rick James is I think he's someone you should consider. he is a Trailblazer in Funk and has some really good music like: Superfreak, Give it to me baby, Mary Jane , Fire and Desire, Ghetto Life (Rest In Peace Teena Marie)
At last! Teena Marie is the real deal 100%. She's writing and producing a lot of her songs. So talented and you cannot go wrong with anything she does. My personal favorites are "It Must Be Magic" and "Square Biz", such joyful records with everything except harmonica that you both love. Her music will make your day better and if it's already good then it will make it even better than that and I bet the kids would like those 2 songs too. RIP Teena Marie one of those artists who left us way too soon but left behind a catalogue of joy.
Please, please, please, check out the duet that Teena Marie did with Rick James for Female Friday, called Fire and Desire. Such a powerful song and really showcases her voice. Fun fact about that song, when they were to record it, Teena Marie had a bad flu, but they decided to go ahead and see how it went (think they were pressed for time because of scheduling) and she knocked out her vocals in 2 takes (when you hear her on this track, you will get why that is so amazing) and when she was done with recording, they had to take her to the emergency room to have her flu treated. Teena Marie is such an amazing artist! Keep up the great work, Family!!!
Thank you again and again for featurng these wonderful, POWERFUL and talented women from the 70s and 80s. Teena Marie had a duet with Rick James (fire and Ice), she was a wonderful performer and singer - she passed away tragically - REST IN PEACE TEENA
Do you know that this song was her biggest r&b crossover hit ever!!! It went all the way to hit #1 on the Billboard Soul chart and it peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the winter of 1985. Some people people called her the most successful blue-eyed soul female singer of all time. This song is a true banger indeed!!! RIP Ms Teena
Teena is my number 1 - so glad you guys checked her out! She has a lot of great songs from between 80-88 (and beyond) and her style is really versatile. Would love for you guys do a little more of her. 🙌
Great song, this coming from a metal head. If you listen to most 80's music, whether it be pop, rock, funk or whatever, they all had electric guitar in it. That's what I miss the most. Let me reiterate, they actually played instruments back then
She and a lot of girl groups all came out around the same time, in the funk/soul/dance beat. Some other great artsts during this time to check out are...Sheila E., Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Klymaxx, Exposé, Taylor Dayne.

All music reactors should check out Unsung!!! You find out so much great information about these awesome artists.
Yes please do Jody Watley Don't You Want Me. Such a good song!
@@dannford-premiersothebysin9057 No. No Jody Whatley whatsoever!
Jody cant touch Teena! Teena produced wrote and played several instruments like Prince.
TWO WORDS, “FIRE AND DESIRE”. One of the greatest songs ever sang and written. RICK JAMES AND TEENA MARIE.
I was a teen when this song was popular. I never imagined decades later I'd watch a younger generation react to it. Amazing and a total trip!
Boston Bean...Same! I loved it back then and I was a teen also! It's still vibes💯and it really is so cool to see the younger babes watching, enjoying and loving it too!👍❤️🙂
AGREE!!!!🤘
Same here. I was in high school at the time.
I was in Junior High when I heard this for the 1st time. I was blown away by the power of her voice. Never heard a female funk out like that
I just KNEW you both would LOVE Teena Marie's _Lovergirl_ !!
@Rod Nixon
I've been trying to get them to listen to Klymaxx for as long as I've suggested Teena. At least five months.
OMG this generation needfsto discover Teena Marie bring her back spread the word Amazing one of my favorites of all time
She was so awesome! RIP Teena Marie. Y’all need to check out her duet with Rick James, “Fire and Desire”-this woman hit notes you didn’t know was possible…absolutely gives you chills in the best way😊
She was bad ass!!!
I tried to tell yall months ago. Respect to Teena Marie. She left us too soon
Oh dear GOD how I miss talents like this. I am so glad I enjoyed it when it first came out and here I am enjoying it all over again!!! 😀
Yes I agree 👍💯, also I have all her greatest hits
Teena was a cold piece! So much soul in this little package - she would bring it!
Teena Marie was the GOAT. I Loved all her songs growing up and I'm 53. I miss her she was big in the R&B charts back in the 70s and 80s
Thank you guys big time for giving us some Teena Marie!!! The legendary Vanilla Child taken from us far too soon. Please try "You make love like Springtime" and "Square Biz"
This song was the jam back in the day!!! She can sing!!
OMG, there is this tune and many others by Teena that are awesome!! My personal favorites - "Portuguese Love" and the duet with Rick James, "Love And Desire" an absolute classic Ol' School R & B tune!! That song really showcases both their phonemenal voices!!
Oh yeah....can't forget Teena Marie's "Portuguese Love" it's definitely one of her best songs.
Lady T!!! Glad you got to her. This is one of her good, fast songs; others include "Behind the Groove" and "Square Biz;" but listen to something like "Out On A Limb" to really hear what she can do on an emotional level. The only voice that can make me cry.
Woo Hoo Teena Marie and Rick James had Long Standing FLINGGGG!! ^^...she is one of my favorites!! What a voice!!
That old story is beyond cringey.
Way true!
And she didn't do blue eyed soul because there is no such thing. Just as there is no such thing as brown eyed metal to be applied to bands like Living Colour. Stop the madness.
💯💯💯
She’s the Eminem of soul
Teena was and is AMAZING. This was a different sound for Teena. She was straight R'n'B.
Listen to Portuguese Love, Behind the Groove, Deja Vu, Square Biz, I Need Your Lovin', Jammin', Ooo La La La... OMG so many.
She was always played in my house growing up. If you want to see her range check out Out on a limb or the classic Fire and desire.
You too spreading that happy feeling. It's infectious
I always loved this song! Thanks for reacting to it!
Have fun.
Yes so glad you did this one I love this song
Tina’s voice is amazing! She was rock and R&B and funk! She worked with Rick James a lot, he produced some of her music and they also had a romantic relationship! ❤️❤️
loved seeing you two react to this.i remember when this video was getting regular MTV airplay back in the mid 80s. Teena Marie was a close protege of Rick James.
Yay! Finally someone giving her a listen and rocking out with her. 👍👍👍
Yes !! Glad you got around to Miss T she’s awesome 😊
Great song and great reaction guys! I have always felt Teena Marie never got the recognition she deserved!
THIS is my absolute favorite Teena Marie song!
Teena Marie is AWESOME!!! You should check out Behind the groove and I need your lovin’
Another great voice going too soon RIP Teena Marie
I like how the heads move at the start of the song
Yes Yes Yes 🙌 Lady T!!! MUST do her hit “SQUARE BIZ”🔥🔥🔥 That is still my jam!!! She was signed to Motown and initially they did not show her as they were not sure what people would think; they wanted her to be heard first. Rick James produced a lot of her songs and you can really hear it on some. Please continue with Teena Marie; “Behind The Groove” is also an absolute banger! ❤️
She was such a wonderful artist & person. Her death back in 2010 was a heavy blow to those who knew & admired her
Great song! She's got a great voice! Love your reaction. Memories of roller skating! 👍😁
A "must hear" from Teena is "If I were a bell". It's a quiet storm classic.
Powerful, dynamic, talent! 🔥Duet with Rick James is a Must Hear in Teena's catalog. "Fire and Desire" 👍
Teena Marie is great, loved seeing another reaction to her. Another great song of hers is Behind the Groove!
OMG I LOVE this song! 💞🔥Taylor Dayne is another great female singer from the same time!
Love you guys. Rick James was
The promoter for T.M. Excellent!
Reminds me of a female Prince!
Really enjoyed this song, I haven't heard it in years. It used to be one of my favorites. I wonder if she had any influence by Prince? The song has a real Prince vibe. I have only ever heard this on the radio, to see her performing live is really fun, that girl was talented. :)
I was convinced Prince wrote this song, but no, it's all her.
i never got a prince vibe from this..i have all of his music and hers..teena had her own style
She was heavily influenced by Rick James considering he was her mentor and lover.
Yesssss! Let’s finally get this out there!! Always loved this song, since it came out in my teen years!! Oh how I miss those days!!💖💙👍
You need to check out one of Prince's Proteges "Sheila E - Glamorous Life" .... she looks like a female Prince and plays the drums!
Teena Marie made you get your groove on back in the day...I played her tape so much, it came apart in my cassette deck as I'm ridin around in my Jeep...lol.
Teena Marie collaborated with Rick James professionally, and they were engaged for a short time. The reason I mentioned Rick James is I think he's someone you should consider. he is a Trailblazer in Funk and has some really good music like: Superfreak, Give it to me baby, Mary Jane , Fire and Desire, Ghetto Life
(Rest In Peace Teena Marie)
Finally! Teena Marie was considered a R&B singer and one of the best. The definition of "Blue eyed soul". Yes react to more Teena Marie please. 🙏
She was one of the Queens of R&B, Not Rock. You have got to listen to more. This song is only the beginning.
Let me reiterate, they actually played instruments back then
I will put Teena Marie up against anybody. An Authentic Beautiful Passionate Talent🙏
She and a lot of girl groups all came out around the same time, in the funk/soul/dance beat. Some other great artsts during this time to check out are...Sheila E., Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Klymaxx, Exposé, Taylor Dayne.
Love Klymaxx
Lisa Lisa! Expose!! Taylor Dayne!!!! Yesssss to all of this. 💕👌🏼
Out on a limb was one of my favs! Teena Marie another great singer!
A huge talent in a little package!
