I think this definitely has to be one of the best The Strokes interview I've ever seen, I think that's because Anders showed such respect and actual interest in their music. Cheers sir!
Thank you SO much Alonso. I really appreciate that you like the interview-style and the content here on Tiny TV. I always try to make all my interviews about the core/heart of the music. So it really means a lot to me that you write that it's one of the best Strokes interviews you've seen
I'd love an interview with Julian talking about music and politics, and just about everything he wants to talk about. He is such an incredibly sharp individual with so much depth to his perspective, and I feel like any interview with him I've ever watched just barely scratches the surface. He feels like someone you'd want to hang out with for hours and just talk and talk and talk.
I agree, but sometimes I feel like he holds back what he’s really saying. I assume he’s very introverted off camera and away from music. And it also depends on the interviewer and the questions, I think. But, I do believe he would be an amazing conversationalist in a deeper sense.
I think Rick's final decision to crystallize the vocals is what makes this record so poignant. I love a flowery riff or guitar solo as much as the next person but Julian's unique voice seems to carry the weight of his emotions and you could hear it in his singing on this record and it added so much depth. And you totallyyy see where his proclivity to use vocals more instrumentally show up in his Voidz stuff. Human sadness exemplifies that pretty well. anywayyyyyy love TNA and the strokes foreverandeverandeverrrr
There's value to melting the vocals along with the rest of the instruments. That was Julian's point. A simple chord isn't just one note. It's cooler to create 'harmony balls'. Like in cooking, you can push the quality of something by melting familiar things into something totally unique and flavorful.
@@sayitsjose Sure, I can agree with that. And I understand why he likes to use his voice to underscore melodies. I was just expressing how I liked that with this album, they chose not to do that + I love Julian's quite singular voice. As a musician, you inevitably experiment with your sound, and this album is just an example of that and their ever-changing range.
Yeah! I just feel so very old, when I realise that "Is This It" was released when I was 20, because this means that now I'm 40! And yeah, I really really really would have liked to see them on some of the early tours as well.
As a huge, huge fan of Julian’s voice I found it extremely interesting to hear his opinions on vocals. I always wondered why he puts so much distortions and stuff (idk the terminologies lol) on vocals on his songs, and I finally got to hear the answers. Great interview !
Thank you so much for the kind words! I am (just like you) a big fan of Julians voice and therefore I was really happy that he wanted to speak so openly about his view on sound and production of vocals 😃👍
Julian "side A is better and I'd have had the vocals lower" you don't usually hear an artist talk about their record in these ways ahaha. I like the loudness of the vocals so I think Rubin was right, but Rubin should listen to his artists in my opinion. Side B is also genuinely better for me on this record.
Same here..even though i love selfless and the adults are talking, i feel ode to the mets, not the same anymore and at the door are highlights of the album.
This is an interview _not_ to be missed for anyone who is a fan of Julian Casablancas or The Strokes. As someone who has been a huge fan of Julian's voice & The Strokes since I first heard Last Night when I was in 7th grade (& then later a fan of The Voidz, naturally), Anders really asked the kind of questions I've always wondered about. His questions opened the door for Julian to answer things I've always wondered about not only with this album, but as a whole - Julian as a creative being & his personal perspective behind his artistic process. I too have always seen the voice as an instrument & it was _very_ cool to hear Julian dive deeper into explaining how he uses his voice as part of the sum of the whole, as it was to hear Albert's perspective & experience. Julian has such an incredibly unique, beautiful, distinct voice & style that is entirely, _entirely_ his own & I've often wondered his process in opting for tech that alters it (especially in The Voidz). There were some very "intimate" things shared, the kind of things artists just "do" but don't articulate outside of their minds, the kinds of things that are really only observed in a studio. Honestly, I feel really fortunate to have found this interview & the opportunity to listen in. Such a great interview! Thank you Anders! And thank you to Julian & Albert of course 💚
This is one of the best and most genuine interviews I have seen of a musician, and julian in particular is notoriously difficult to interview . Kudos to you
All hail William Farroll! Thank you SO much! I’m quite happy about this interview myself and always try to make the artist I interview to be at their most comfortable. So I tried to give Julian and Albert my honesty, my heart and my passion for their music. If it worked, is up to you, the fans of The Strokes, to judge. I’m just happy to speak to honest and great musicians and give a little extra music-nerdiness to the world ❤️🤌🏻
I agree that the voice is an instrument, and within the context of this album, I believe that this instrument was used effectively. If julian’s vocals were lowered and “blended” more into the overall painting, his words would be hidin’ in the background but they want to be found
Elton John once said that he liked blending the vocals with the rest of the instruments so that the melody would catch the listeners attention and cause them to go and read the lyrics. So the message gets acrossed. Your not going to understand every lyric on most songs on Tyranny, so most likely you are going to read them after the first listen.
Julian Casablancas thank you soooo much for pushing yourself - singing along with you has opened my own voice up - as if you will ever read this thank you - in all fairness I am so grateful for to you & Rick Rubin and where you take the vocals to a new level , I love the new abnormal
So weird seeing these guys as fully grown dudes. They practically lived in a bar that I worked at in downtown Manhattan. I’m glad everyone is doing well.
I finally know why I love the strokes so much. Like Julian said with harmony balls and it sounding like one big chord, the strokes music just blends together and actually sounds like one big intricate chord.
Jules looked like an 8-year-old nervously reciting “the right thing to say” that his teacher taught when he was on the subject of “his next quest”... haha
Your voice is amaizing Julian, dont be so shy! I was able to find a demo of selfless with only the vocal track; it's a jewel. Perhaps for you is like to see a painting with only your face, but for us....it's magical, your voice is so pure !!!! We love it
"Did you listen to it backwards?" Maybe a joke based on his lyrics from Nintendo Blood with the voidz "I listen to your favourite song backwards" .... Maybe a test to see how much research the interviewer did on him/how in the know he is re Julian
Thank you so so much Nalu. Just trying my best to bring honesty in all my interviews, so it's great when the musicians reply with honesty and integrity like The Strokes did 👍❤️🎸
18:09 Of course. When Is this it was released you almost had all Room on Fire songs created. Instead, it was just business strategy to release it in a different album some years after. But, same good shit.

I think this album is my favorite toooooo, and knowwwww it is on a spiritual & emotional level, and interviewer correct “that says ALOT”- I’ve been a fan of the strokes since debut album , and in my personal experience it’s rare for artists to not only continuously impress me w the same intensity album after album, but even more so for their most recent project to be my favorite. Surely some might pout about the absence of 🤘🏾songs, but I can hear em on their other albums, and respect their artistic revolution. I feel like this album is the soundtrack of NOW and what we- internally & externally, interpersonally and collectively - are experiencing. HELLA LOVE AND APPRECIATION for this interview and the strokes
Thank you SO much for this very kind and in-depth comment ❤️ Really means a lot for me and Tiny TV 🙏🏻 And I absolutely agree: It is kind of rare, that artists/bands still can impress you 20 years after their debut. It really shows the strength of the band and the songs they write. All best from Anders, Tiny TV.
I do hear a similarity between the riffs in "American Girl" and "Last nite' haha I never noticed it until he said it. I'm sure Tom Petty was honored, RIP 🙏 both awesome bands!!
Thank you SO much @Rewind! Of all the many things I do (podcasts, radio, RUclips, writing etc.) interviewing and talking to inspiring people is my absolute favorite thing. So I am really glad that you enjoy the content and took your time to comment. It means SO much in these crazy crazy times 🙏🏻❤️
Great interview! I loved that you showed genuine respect and made an effort to express your appreciation for the strokes with the set up and love the shirt.
Thank you so very much Sophia B. It’s always important to me to make an effort and show my love for music. So I really appreciate that you enjoyed the interview 🖤✌🏻
Thanks a lot Chris. And yeah, I had some guitar-specific questions lined up for Albert, but unfortunately we ran out of time 😔 But thanks for watching Tiny TV - really means a lot to me 🙏🏻
I'm 2 yrs late to this conversation about vocals, but as I watched it again yesterday it was fresh in my mind, He-War by Cat Power just came up on a playlist for me, and it reminded me of what Julian said about the vocal on "Young Turks" by Rod Stewart ie that it's lower, blended in the mix but you can still understand and hear the words. I like more how Cat Power does it here, He-War ruclips.net/video/BMxjaye7tNY/видео.html plus the killer guitar riff and Dave Grohl's excellent drumming. Plus I like songs where Julian sings along with the guitar part. His voice is definitely like an amazing instrument, how he can go so low and so high in falsetto and still not put me off when I usually hate it when blokes sing in falsetto, but he goes in and out of it for the benefit of the song and brings light and shade, plus he can really carry the pretty tune when he does it. I still love it when he growls/screams tho, like he does in 50/50 (I got that stuck in my head today "I will say! I will say, don't judge me!" - I'd like to shout that at a few ppl! 😄) Great interview, I really like it when the interviewer asks more intelligent questions about the musical process so the interviewee is more interested and inclined to give deeper answers like Julian did here. 👍
Thank you very much for watching and commenting Kyle. Really glad that you enjoyed it. I would love to do interviews with the rest of the band sometime in the future 🥳
Rick Rubin actually did this album a disservice...I love it because everything they make is gorgeous but I think Julians points are fitting. It's nice to hear different avenues of sound from them (the strokes) but they need to stay true to their hearts. Rationale: All of the live performances of TNA songs are much better. The adults are talking on SNL, ode to the mets at Barlays stadium in NYC, the adults are talking with the "ARE YOU NOT NOT ENTERTAINED?" ending...all these raw/non-tampered are more raw and sexier...Not isolated and cleaned up like on the studio versions.
I totally do not agree with you for a variety of reasons! (The New Abnormal is now my go to album when I really need to listen again and then sometimes again. So much love for this album).
I've watched this interview over a dozen times and each time I notice something different that calls to me...this time it's how elegant Julian has put his words together to somehow taunt the muse within me, remember "never interview these two together...uhh ahhh mmhh" to his last statement in this interview, I wish there were some way to describe what will come to pass when we do finally encounter one another without me sounding like a "psychotic girl" (black keys) however there's no way around it either you'll appreciate my certainty or simply assume this to be a rant from yet another groupie to terrorize, or meet u at the bottom, living proof that even woman of culture and intellect idolize musicians...false,break!
Julian is a musical genius no doubt, but man is he horrible at interviews. Gotta love the almost brain damaged slowness he give every question. The way he tangent and gets stuck of words makes me wanna be in his head.
Pretty sure horses by Patti Smith and Parallel Lines by Blondie have really good B sides lots of hits and probably a lot of underrated unpopular hits I like to dig deep with my music 😌😌
great interview!!! finally some good questions, cant believe how in 20 years no one managed to asked him about his vocals preferences. Since i dont know how to ask for an interview myself, would you mind if i play part of this one on my radio show?
Hi Aix. Thank you SO much for watching Tiny TV AND for posting this great comment ❤️✌🏻 Really appreciate it. And yes, you are very welcome to use it on your radio show 😃
Thank you SO much Pierre. And yes, you are absolutely right: I was VERY anxious and nervous from the beginning of the interview :-) Especially because Julian and Albert are so playful and like to prank journalist a bit. But all in all I'm quite happy with the end result. So thank your for watching Tiny TV and for taking the time to comment :-D
@@TinyTV_DK yeah, seriously, great job! i would've been insanely nervous too. how can you not be when you're such a huge long time fan?! :P and video interviews with flaky internet makes for even more anxiousness! haha. i think you asked them great questions. i heard them speak on things that i've never heard before in other interviews. truly, well done!
I don't idolize Jules or any of the members of both bands rather I see them as equals in the real. Of consciousness yet so far away in terms of class seperation and my shortcomings have become so vast and common that I've began to alienate those nearest me whom I love so dear let alone those far from me that I know will experience a new level of transcendence as a species It's two memory complexes reuniting for the first time in human history, of course these two Ra and Nu have been together before just never in humans time here on earth.....Psychotic Girl may be an understatement
Imo, Julian has never sounded better than on TNA . I think he's wrong to want the strokes' best asset to blend into the background. Hopefully the response to the album has changed his mind.
Disagree. I think following the trend of clear and loud vocals will label them more of a pop band than a rock band. Just because it's new and fresh doesn't mean that everyone should do it.
Why do non-musicians insist on the vocals being the most important quality of a song? If his voice was the most important aspect of The Strokes music, then what about his solo work and side projects? Why are they so crappy compared to the strokes? There’s NO SUCH THING as a sound that’s more “important” than another
I have some cool short excerpt to run before I release the entire interview. Stay tuned here on Tiny TV and enjooooy some Strokes :-D Here's the first excerpt: ruclips.net/video/JHaoVX0VsFY/видео.html
Julian is so awkward in interviews. My take is that he is excellent at (and comfortable) expressing himself through his music but is unable to do so concisely and coherently in actual conversation. He clearly thinks about his answers but it seems like he can't put into words what he wants to say. That's fine with me - I love the Strokes.
Julian always takes about 10 years to answer a question. Lmao gotta love him
He thinks before he speaks. A skill most of us need to learn
I like this interviewer. HIs attitude & the nicely arranged stuff in the room show his love & respect to the Strokes!
Thank you SO much! What a great compliment
Julian: "I prefer the blurry..."
Julian's Camera:
Checks out.
why does Julian always do these kinds of interviews from weird angles
I don't know the answer. All I know is, that for this interview he was (for some reason) in a hotel room in New York :-D
Supongo que es para que los fans no reconozcan el hotel y pueda estar en paz jaja
He’s self conscious and he always has been. That’s part of why he is so crushed on.
cause he looks good at any angle and this is a proof of it
Listen to the album Angles - all will be told
Everyone: How did this album happened julian? It's brilliant!
Julian: Idk, yea sure

I agree, but sometimes I feel like he holds back what he’s really saying. I assume he’s very introverted off camera and away from music. And it also depends on the interviewer and the questions, I think. But, I do believe he would be an amazing conversationalist in a deeper sense.
I think Rick's final decision to crystallize the vocals is what makes this record so poignant. I love a flowery riff or guitar solo as much as the next person but Julian's unique voice seems to carry the weight of his emotions and you could hear it in his singing on this record and it added so much depth. I thought the same thing!! The record hits so hard bc of ricks decision
My thoughts exactly
I agree 100%, New Abnormal would’ve just been a totally different album from what it’s now if they decided to go with heavy effects on the vocal.
There's value to melting the vocals along with the rest of the instruments. That was Julian's point. A simple chord isn't just one note. It's cooler to create 'harmony balls'. Like in cooking, you can push the quality of something by melting familiar things into something totally unique and flavorful.

The sequencing on side B is perfect, like it's insane the ride from At the Door to Ode to the Mets.
Best record they have made since room on fire. Its a really exciting time to be a strokes fan, good interview and questions 🙌

I think the only weak part of the album is the first half of Ode to the Mets.
Can’t wait for Harmony Balls the record

His voice is definitely like an amazing instrument, how he can go so low and so high in falsetto and still not put me off when I usually hate it when blokes sing in falsetto, but he goes in and out of it for the benefit of the song and brings light and shade, plus he can really carry the pretty tune when he does it. I still love it when he growls/screams tho, like he does in 50/50 (I got that stuck in my head today "I will say! I will say, don't judge me!" - I'd like to shout that at a few ppl! 😄)
Great interview, I really like it when the interviewer asks more intelligent questions about the musical process so the interviewee is more interested and inclined to give deeper answers like Julian did here. 👍
Thank you so much for doing this interview! Maybe you can interview the rest of the band and get their thoughts on this album or the past?
Thank you very much for watching and commenting Kyle. Really glad that you enjoyed it. I would love to do interviews with the rest of the band sometime in the future 🥳
Holy shit I have to have that vinyl
IT. SOUNDS. SOOOO. GOOOOD 🎶🎸
It feels like Julian is thinking the very best word for every sentence in his answers
After that Vulture interview I would probably too lol

YEAH! Congrats on the new t-shirt 🤌🏻🎉 What’s the design like?
@@TinyTV_DK the basic logo I’m wearing it today😁😁😁😁😁 and with jeans that look like jeans the strokes would wear😎😎

@@TinyTV_DK Oh wow, you saw my comment! I really enjoyed this interview and learned more about the Strokes. Thank you for doing this!
El mejor álbum, sin duda ❤
Estar de acuerdo
Agreed!
I totally do not agree with you for a variety of reasons! (The New Abnormal is now my go to album when I really need to listen again and then sometimes again. So much love for this album).
This album is a masterpiece
i love juliannnnnnn
Ooooooooh, slicked back Julian.
I've watched this interview over a dozen times and each time I notice something different that calls to me...this time it's how elegant Julian has put his words together to somehow taunt the muse within me, remember "never interview these two together...uhh ahhh mmhh" to his last statement in this interview, I wish there were some way to describe what will come to pass when we do finally encounter one another without me sounding like a "psychotic girl" (black keys) however there's no way around it either you'll appreciate my certainty or simply assume this to be a rant from yet another groupie to terrorize, or meet u at the bottom, living proof that even woman of culture and intellect idolize musicians...false,break!
such a great interview!
Thank you SO much Angie 🤌🏻🔥🎉
Julian is a musical genius no doubt, but man is he horrible at interviews. Gotta love the almost brain damaged slowness he give every question. The way he tangent and gets stuck of words makes me wanna be in his head.
Muy buena entrevista!
wtf dude you have 4.73k subs how did you swing the freaking strokes??
I wish Albert had let Julian speak more.
Damn Albert lookin GOOD 🫦🫦
so much for maya saying jules was lacking in depth
I always thought it was “my ex”
Pretty sure horses by Patti Smith and Parallel Lines by Blondie have really good B sides lots of hits and probably a lot of underrated unpopular hits I like to dig deep with my music 😌😌
5:45 Kind of wanted to know Albert's opinion on that. I expected Julian to say he enjoyed the second half the most.
I just wanted to be one of The Strokes

great interview!!! finally some good questions, cant believe how in 20 years no one managed to asked him about his vocals preferences. Since i dont know how to ask for an interview myself, would you mind if i play part of this one on my radio show?
Hi Aix. Thank you SO much for watching Tiny TV AND for posting this great comment ❤️✌🏻 Really appreciate it. And yes, you are very welcome to use it on your radio show 😃
Albert looks good!
man you were hella anxious, they're tough to interview tho, good job
Thank you SO much Pierre. And yes, you are absolutely right: I was VERY anxious and nervous from the beginning of the interview :-) Especially because Julian and Albert are so playful and like to prank journalist a bit. But all in all I'm quite happy with the end result. So thank your for watching Tiny TV and for taking the time to comment :-D
@@TinyTV_DK you did great man, thanks for this!
Of consciousness yet so far away in terms of class seperation and my shortcomings have become so vast and common that I've began to alienate those nearest me whom I love so dear let alone those far from me that I know will experience a new level of transcendence as a species
It's two memory complexes reuniting for the first time in human history, of course these two Ra and Nu have been together before just never in humans time here on earth.....Psychotic Girl may be an understatement
Funny that he’s not happy with his voice being clear but I enjoyed being able to understand what
He’s saying and many other fans did as well.
alright he said it
Dream is destiny
What the heck? I just got the vinyl today, except my record isn't red, it's black...! Wow, why isn't mine red too?!
I think the red versions were limited editions for various markets. I bought mine in Denmark on the day of release 🙌🏻
Because you didn't buy the colored vinyl.
Perfekt fredagsunderholdning 🍻
Tak manner! God fredag og skål.

My Joy Division shirt fell in love with Alberts Misfits shirt
'Get The Vaccines'. The new album by The Vaccines. Out Now!
Side B all the way
Did Julian just quote Ratatouille at 12:40?
Shame the interviewer didn't ask Julian & Albert if they knew of or were fans of Joy Division.
I love that you comment about this, because I actually planned to do that - but unfortunately we ran out of time 😭
He might actually really be a phonomaniac, as one song suggested years ago.
Imo, Julian has never sounded better than on TNA . I think he's wrong to want the strokes' best asset to blend into the background. Hopefully the response to the album has changed his mind.
I very much agree! I think TNA has some of the best Strokes songs and "sounds". Really my favorite since Room On Fire
@@TinyTV_DK And thank you for the video, sir. You asked interesting questions.
There’s NO SUCH THING as a sound that’s more “important” than another
@@tylurmackinnon6217 I'm a life long musician. I could argue with you about preference, but I'd rather just say stop being an asshole.

We were like, and it was like, and he likes, and you know, like, like, and um, like, you know like, but then it was like and like
Julian is so awkward in interviews. My take is that he is excellent at (and comfortable) expressing himself through his music but is unable to do so concisely and coherently in actual conversation. He clearly thinks about his answers but it seems like he can't put into words what he wants to say. That's fine with me - I love the Strokes.
1:09 😂
I've listen strokes songs backwards
