saw this on saturday and i found it extremely funny even if some of the best gags were shown in the trailer. the screening i went for was actually almost full so id assume from that itll go in at number 2 behind justin beibers film
Gotta agree with Kermode 100% here. Loved Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Saw Paul yesterday. Wasn't nearly as good as I expected of a Pegg/Frost comedy. There were some good jokes, but what hurt it for me was how many low brow jokes they added in to "mainstream it up" as Kermode says.
He really enjoyed it. I can't remember where, but there was a video I seen where he got a negative response from a listener for giving Hot Fuzz a great review.
I honestly really liked Paul. Sure it was a very mainstream movie, but it still was a great film about friendship that had a lot of heart. Was it as good as Shaun of the dead or Hot Fuzz? No. But it does show that Pegg and Frost can do good stuff outside of the CORNETTO trilogy, something which Edgar Wright failed to do with Scott Pilgrim.
I think he copped out a bit there. He obviously likes Simon and Nick and didn't want to list what was wrong with it, and usually he doesn't pull his punches if he's just spoken to someone involved with the film.
@petrietri 'good' and 'bad' are completely subjective terms that have no place in a good review. He talked ABOUT the film and pointed out things that he personally thought worked or didnt work. What would you like? for him to tell you whether you like it or not? not a critcs job
@etocadet Very well put. I think the point Kermode is trying to make is that the other works in the Pegg/Frost oeuvre are very low key but with spectacular pop culture flourishes, which is the good old British tradition. The problem anyone from the UK, who is familar with the Pegg/Frost/Wright team up till now, is gonna have with Paul is that the American sensibility tend's to go against this. Its a loud and ironic sense of humour but I agree, none the worse for that. Just different.
The film’s like E.T. (1982) with A mixture of Close Encounters Of The 3rd Kind (1977) two of my favourite films, but this is easily & favourably comparable to The Three Flavoured Cornetto Trilogy (2004, 2007 & 2013) as the film’s funny, entertaining & well crafted. (85%) (4/5 stars) (positive)
@DontTouchMyVicodin To help you, I haven't seen Simon Pegg in any film after those 2 films, to not sully my thoughts. Ok, he was alright as Scotty in Star Wars/Trek.
This review forgot to mentionall the subtle nerdy sci fi references which are present in the film to the same if not greater degree then in spaced. I found paul to be "nerdier" then Hot fuzz. It's just that paul can be fun for those who don't understand thoe gags. Also i think th funniest jokes are not in the trailer. I disagree with this review in it's complaints regarding themainstream
This was well-timed and I did laugh a fair amount. It was just two mistakes: the seeming reliance on references to classic sci-fi films and the bashing of Christianity. I wasn't offended by the latter, it just got repetitive. It was nothing to do with decency or taste but I simply found them to be pushing beliefs down the audiences throat whereas it doesn't actually provoke humor or push the plot; nothing "smart" was said and it was over and over and over.
So...not a complete thumbs down but he certainly put in a few caveats! What seems strange to me is, having watched Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot fuzz, is that Kermode can say he expected more localised nerd references but Pegg/Frost have been influenced by American pop culture right from the beginning. It was just the same in Paul. Some classic Close Encounters and E.T parody moments there. In fact Frost and Pegg are just being absorbed by the culture that inspired them anyway!
@optim23 I hated Scott pilgrim as well. It was so boring, I wouldn't minded if I had been shot after coming out of Scott pilgrim (obviously, I would have minded being shot :P). It was so bad. Never going to see it again. I agree with you, I was very dissapointed by Scott pilgrim. Love Mark but gotta say, it's more like in 5 years everyone's going to say they don't like Scott pilgrim. I HATED IT!
@davefgranger If everybody did know that creationism doesn't add up,then yeah,there'd be no point in anybody pointing it out.But the fact of the matter is that in the U.S more people believe in creationism than evolution!So in the U.S more people should be bangin' on about the idiocy of creationism.Lucky for me living in the U.K & the rest of Europe,belief in creationism is so tiny it's not even an issue but the evangelical fudumentalists in the U.S deserve all the slagging off they get & more!
To be honest, Shaun of the dead was a low budget movie where very few people realised what they had. With hot fuzz they didn't know what was coming when it came. People are ready for the next one and unfortunately Americans have taken all the edge off. They should have just left the two to poke fun at God. So what? Bruce Almighty was the biggest film of Jim Carrey's career. It's about a fucking Alien for christ sake, Ah well, they team up with Edgar Wright and get a real film done.
Very insightful comment. As a Christian I wasn't remotely concerned by the anti-Christian message, because they built the lamest straw man and tried to look intelligent by pummeling it into the ground
I hate British movies, I haven't seen Shaun of the dead and I have no plans on seeing it... Paul is a good funny movie, I liked it... But I doubt it would've been the same if all the actors had been British.
Alfred Hitchcock listens skeptically in the background.

That lady seated near Simon at 2:14 is doing the best 'politely bored' performance I've ever seen.
I liked "Paul" a lot. It's not "Shaun of the Dead" or "Hot Fuzz". It's Pegg-n-Frost Lite. That said, it's still a smart, funny movie.
Thank you, I'd been waiting to hear the good doctor's opinion. Still going to see it...
0:20 the guy in the background starts picking his nose

I wonder what Mark thought about Hot Fuzz
@RoathRipper Because he has a Ph.D

@petrietri it is
I think he copped out a bit there. He obviously likes Simon and Nick and didn't want to list what was wrong with it, and usually he doesn't pull his punches if he's just spoken to someone involved with the film.
@DontTouchMyVicodin Why? This isn't a follow up to those films.
@petrietri 'good' and 'bad' are completely subjective terms that have no place in a good review. He talked ABOUT the film and pointed out things that he personally thought worked or didnt work. What would you like? for him to tell you whether you like it or not? not a critcs job

haha love the hitchcock cutout!

@petrietri pauls amazing!
I personally liked Paul, alot:)
Paul looks like a good film hopefully it will be a good film

why is he called the Good Doctor?

@optim23 I hated Scott pilgrim as well. It was so boring, I wouldn't minded if I had been shot after coming out of Scott pilgrim (obviously, I would have minded being shot :P). It was so bad. Shaun of the Dead- Great
Hot Fuzz- Meh
Paul- Is this a joke?
Scott Pilgrim- Better than Shaun
Attack the Block- Now you're effin talking

I liked spaced, shaun of the dead, and hot fuzz. Didn't really like Paul.
@DontTouchMyVicodin Live a little. FFS.
Very insightful comment. As a Christian I wasn't remotely concerned by the anti-Christian message, because they built the lamest straw man and tried to look intelligent by pummeling it into the ground

That's such a stupid comment, honestly
@@xTruncz The comment is not as stupid as you are
less of a review-more of a grumble
Paul was underwhelming.
So you hate British movies but you refuse to watch them, cool
Scott Pilgrim is rubbish! Cant believe how disappointed I was by that movie.
