Having owned 20 Jaguars, from XK120, Mark X, XKE, 420, several XJ, S Type, XJS V12, to a 5.0 XK-R, I have broad experience with the marque. I tested the 4.2R but eventually purchased a 2012 R convertible (used).
I was a pro race driver in USA and Europe for 12 years and taught the Porsche, Ferrari and Jaguar racing schools. My views will probably vary from others here because of my background, so my apologies upfront.
The 4.2R is a delight to drive and seemed a bit more nimble, except for some understeer at higher speed cornering. The 5.0R definitely feels more stable cornering at speed and seems easier to drift and bring back quickly. The brakes are about equal, although the 5.0 is a bit heavier, but the balance is right on both.
There is a diff in acceleration with the 5.0 being much quicker off the line (torque) and continuity of the power band. For normal road driving, there is so little diff, few would notice.
The value is vastly different. Being a lifelong classic car collector (50+), I look at the XK-R as a potential classic with appreciating value in the coming years (I bought a 1965 XKE convert. for US$3,500 and sold it for $65,000; a Ferrari Daytona Spyder for US$70K and sold it for $750K, etc). As such, and as noted in the excellent video, low mileage R versions will increase more and the 'last of breed' will also bring more$$$. I've had mine for 8 years, never in the rain and only 15,000 miles on the clock - I will hold it for another 5 years and expect to see a good profit, more than the 4.2R. (I'll be 80 by then and probably driving an electric wheelchair!)

Comments after watching: Very interesting! I had missed the fact that your comparison is with XKR Coupes!
I will never pay for 'extra performance' once a minimum level has been reached - all XK's and XKR's reach that minimum level and I prefer convertibles (though I have owned a few coupes).
I've owned nine XK Jaguars since 1997 and when they announced their demise, I decided to buy the best I could find as a 'keeper'. I've owned X100 XK8's, XKR's, 4.0L, 4.2L, X150 XK's and XKR's DHC and Coupes.
In my opinion, the best of the lot is the facelift 5.0L XK - it has more than enough power, reasonable fuel economy and looks lovely - in an understated way.
I do regular long trips with petrolhead friends and their wives. Friends' cars have included: Aston V8 Vantage, DB9, 911's and Boxters (various), SL's (various), F-Type (6 cyl) and Maseratti Grandsport. My XK's have had to either carry other people's luggage or, on several occasions, give another wife a 'rest' from a harsh noisy, uncomfortable ride... the XK is simply the best GT in the world, at a reasonable price.
Surprised you didn't notice any difference in ride and economy - although the 5.0L encourages the use of the right foot so economy might be more down to driving style.
    Thanks for the video.

I think you made a good choice to get the best XK and make it a keeper, but personally I would keep a 4.2 if it’s for ‘collectors’ and or value purposes. My guy who services mine knows an Arab chap in North London (he won’t mention his name as he’s famous) that owns over 35 cars including one of those fancy a mil Ferrari’s, and bought 3 of them (4.2s) and is now storing underground for the long term. Good vid, had my 4.2 for 3 years and done 30k great car.apart from usual stuff like replacing valley pipes ( nightmare) and keeping on top of maintenance it's been faultless. Upgrades are custom map pulley and exhaust. Only things you didn't mention are ride quality, better in the 4.2 for uk roads and the fact the 5.0 is direct injection which can start to get carbon build up on valves which the 4.2 doesn't suffer with. Enjoy your car mate, good choice.

I went 5.0 purely due to the more modern front end being more appealing to me. From a sound and performance standpoint, I would have been happy with either. The differences for daily driving are minimal between the two, although there are a lot of small things on the 5.0s that are more modern (bluetooth, E-Diff, etc.). Either is awesome.

2010 XKR owner, pulleyed and tuned to about 600hp, is simply the best, most reliable car I have ever owned (among about 30). Have tracked it dozens of times and never misses a beat. I have accumulated 185,000 miles on mine, still looks and drives like new, and ZF still shifts crisply and has had no work except for 2 fluid changes. Magnificent value!

The only thing I don't like about the 4.2 (the earlier 150) is the side blade, is it a functional vent? Other than that... larger diameter wheels are easy to get, fuse #19 is easy to remove, wheel spacers are readily available and suspension modifications can be made. The 5.0 would be over powered for my purposes and I'm not a fan of the shift dial, or for that matter all of the electronic gadgetry of either car so... It's the XK-8 for me! I love everything about that model, all of the wood trim, the un cluttered dash panel, the clean and sleek body work...
I admire all of the XK models for their different features but, for me, the original is always the one I come back to. Unless... I could have one of each!😃😉

I nearly bought an XF at one point, but really hated the transmission selector when driving it. I now have the Range Rover Sport with the 5 Litre supercharged engine (same as the XKR) and before that had an XJR with the 4.2L supercharged engine, and they are both great engines. 4.2 XKR Portfolio I've had about 6 months. About 7k miles on it so far. Absolutely loving it. Just the right amount of low end rumble, still perfectly civilized on the freeways and interstates. I was shopping for a '15-'16 392 Challenger and ended up test driving an '07 XKR Convertible, a '11 XKR Convertible, and the one I eventually bought, a 2008 XKR Portfolio Coupe. And it was 15k less than the Challenger I wanted. Best bang for buck IMO, and potential buyers will not be disappointed with either.

I found a 2009 XKR Portfolio and I loved the shadow gray color and it drove better than any car I tested. I own a 2008 4.2 XKR Portfolio Edition with just around 20,000 miles and I would not trade it for the XKR-S 5.0 for even swap, the 4.2 is reliable. I love the adequate power of 420 HP/413 lb-ft on a perfect supercharge engine, this is a true fine tuned Grand Touring gentleman's automobile not a super car so Jaguar could have crammed a larger supercharger under the hood and cranked it up to a 700 HP/ 697 lb-ft to the rear wheels and called it a Super Car past XKR-S GT and still I would have passed on it! I'm quite content with the subtle exhaust note at idle and the smooth sleeper sound where you can pull up to an elegant restaurant on a date night, then the ability to hit 4000 RPM in the the sports mode using the paddle shifter on the back road twists as you drive back home. Overall, I love the 4.2 original car over the 5.0 where it the rumble could not be detected as a Jaguar original note.

I am lucky enough to have an XK Dynamic R 2014, which I bought in 2019. Prior to that I had a 2008 4.2 XKR. They are very different cars, apart from the engines as you highlight. The chassis is lower on the Dynamic R and also benefits from the reworked suspension from the XKR-S. When pushing on in the 4.2, I always found some under-steer and slight wallowing at the front end, I tried to address this by upgrading the bushes all round including front and rear anti roll bar bushes, with poly bushes. It improved it but didnt completely fix it. I also did a ECU upgrade and put in 200 cell Sports Cat along with K&N air filter. So I reckon the 4.2 was around 440 bhp, my 5 litre Dynamic R plus ECU / K&N is around 560bhp. The 4.2 engine is pretty bullet proof, along with gear box and general reliability was good. 5 litre engines can have a timing chain issue, which if not modified can cause problems, this was fixed after 2012 I think. Before replacing the poly-bushes, as with other Jags I had - there would be wear a lot of wear. I was also not happy with the brakes, so swapped these out for EBS yellow stuff pads that give a better bite, could be a little violent if your not gentle. The other aspect of this is drive-ability. Both the 4.2R and 5R need bucket loads of respect. If you are over eager with the throttle you can go sideways very very quickly. Its much less likely in the 4.2 but still possible and scary when it happens ! The rear profile of the tyres is 285/30/20 and on the dynamic 295. Fronts are the same at 255/35/20. I have always used Michelin 4S's and seems to be the most popular choice in the forums. The Dynamic R is different, it has the XKR-S suspension and on a dry day with the Michelin's has a ridiculous amount of grip, on a damp day it can be a handful, and if you see a snowflake - stay in doors or do as I do and have a second set of all weather tyres. You can still loose the back end of the Dynamic R if you floor it at 50/60mph on a dry road with Michelin's, so it does need to be treated with respect. The handling is a lot sharper, much less under-steer and much more responsive. I also prefer the front end, the Dynamic R has upgraded LED lights front and rear. Fuel economy are about the same. The gearbox is more responsive in the dynamic R - I think this is a result of a software upgrade more than a change in mechanical. So I would say the 4.2 is easier to drive, its no slouch, but less likely to get you into bother. The only other thing I have spent money on in the Dynamic R - which you can do on the 2007-2012 (older shape X150) is put in a retro-fit Apple Car play box fitted by Cartonics in Surrey. Its a little clunky but does the job of getting integrated and once up and running - you have to press a small button works well. A great video though - thanks for highlighting the model. The sad thing was I PX'd my 2008 XKR with 100k for £8.3k, with no expense spared. :-( live and learn !

Let me sum this up for anyone who’s torn between which is a better option for them
If you want minimal problems and maintenance, and more reliability, get the 4.2 S/C
If you want to replace the entire cooling system, including water pump, upper and lower outlet pipes, crossover, rear manifold pipe, fuel system issues with high pressure pump failure(1000’s of $) and eventually possibly timing chain failure, get the 5.0 s/c. It does have more horsepower 🙄🤣

@@HSGAutomotive worked for Jag for a bit, this is about as accurate as it gets. That new style pop up rotary gear selector box is more prone to problems as well, and once it decides it’s gonna head out, you will either be
      A. Stranded and can’t shift from park(short of neutral release under counsel)
      B. Won’t go back down into place and then the car won’t start at all and you’ll once again be stranded

Thanks for the video and comparison. After 25 years and 150,000+ miles on my XJS I was looking for a long distance companion as reliability and parts availability began to be a concern. To me the X100 is the prettier body style, but the improvements in chassis and interior room tiled me toward the X150. Hence I now have a second year (2008 is the US) X150 XKR coupe'. What I love is beautiful shape, very nice and comfortable interior, "effortless cruising" as you said, excellent exhaust sound, and no need to worry about merging onto the freeway. Just pick your gap and dial up the acceleration needed to reach it. I do not think I have ever used full throttle with this beast. Oh yes, there are lots of compliments and quiet looks, showing jag does know how to style a GT. Now I am looking for a drop top XK or XKR for good weather travel. I have no need for all the power of the 4.2 so the 5.0 R is overkill, except for the bells and whistles that come with the R, so perhaps a 2012 (US) 5.0 R for the daytime running lights and backup camera, or I am even considering a base 5.0 XK although I wonder what the R has (other than the blower) that the base does not. Of course this all depends on the options specified of the base, but I would like a list of the differences between the two if anyone has information on that. Short story- I have a 4.2 R coupe' and love it, and plan to add a 5.0, blown or not, DHC.

Very enjoyable and informative video. Have been tempted for many years - I would buy the 4.2 for the commonly held view that they are closely matched in all areas except value for money. Sadly the lack of a manual gearbox is a major factor for my wife even though I personally feel the auto probably matches the character of the car better.

Definitely agree on the 4.2 shifter. Manufactures are making a mistake removing visceral mechanical control with the drivetrain in these console shifters. Dial-A-Gear lost every sensory experience and I hate it. Feel matters. The 4.2 even includes fog lights which are omitted in the 5.0.

As I'm an F type owner, I can see the styling ques from the XK. the XK is one of my favorite Jaguars and it's a true GT in every sense. The F Type can't compete with it as a tourer as the F Type is somewhere between sports and tourer. The XK's have always been special coming from a pedigree that defined Jaguar. While I've not driven an XK, I'm sure that the ride must be sublime ! Both of these 4.2 & 5 are beautiful. Jaguar needs to resurrect the XK line !

Great comparison of the two versions! I went shopping for this generation of the XKR after owning a 2002 XK8 Coupe and came away not liking it as much as my 2002. The previous generation had a somewhat softer chassis that gave a somewhat more isolated feel and GT-centric driving experience. It's understandable given that the XK8 chassis evolved from the XJS. I test drove the NA5.0 Coupe thinking it would be the "softest" version and came away feeling that Jaguar definitely moved the needle away from GT and more toward Sports Car in terms of the ride and handling. It's not all-out sports car like a 911 but it is a lot sharper than the previous generation XK8/XKR in my opinion. After driving a 2013 XJ-L Supercharged, I became convinced that the XJ is where I belong for the spirited but more luxurious GT experience I had in my XK8.

Thanks for that excellent video! Very timely indeed. For me it has to be the 4.2 XKR. Why? 4.2 engine finally bulletproof, 5.0 auto dial selector has been ‘problematic’ in other jags, and the verdict from the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club seminar on XKRs was “not sure how reliable 5.0 litre will prove to be and the torque can be overpowering on a badly surfaced road.” I also like the cleanliness of the design of the earlier car and it’s purity. Anyway, I think you made the right choice. Thanks again for such an informative and intelligent video. Cheers!!

Three key words when buying either. Maintenance Maintenance Maintenance.
The 5.0ltr has oil fed timing chain guides, so look for oil changes at higher than manufacturer spec, so, more frequent than 15,000 miles, and I would look for one that's been serviced every 5000 miles. Make sure in either car the gearbox has been serviced, the interval is 7 years or 70,000 miles, and it's a must. Also, if you're buying one with closer to 6 figure mileage, make sure it's had a diff service. Check the obvious stuff like headlining, etc. I had an XF 3.0ltr petrol V6 premium luxury and now have a 3.0ltr supercharged XJ portfolio and I never had and haven't had any major breakdowns (the ZF 6hp25 in the XF broke and had to be reconditioned but that's an ZF problem) incidentally the XK was fitted only with the 6hp gearbox. Overall I've been very pleased with my Jags, the driving experience is incredible, Jags drive like no other cars, I've had BMW, Lexus, Mercedes so I speak with some experience. So in summary, if you're considering either then study the service history with a microscope and if all good you should be fine. One last thing whilst I remember, my Jag specialist said they get a lot more 5.0ltr's in with engine issues than 4.2's. Whether that's because there's more of them I don't know.

Favorite video of the New Year. I recently bought an 4.2 xkr for many of the same reasons you mentioned (except for economy). I had a similar experience when choosing a used first gen Audi TT. I chose the 225 turbo over the 3.2 that was also available. The larger engine made the little TT a more clumsy handling vehicle. It wanted to plow a bit in tighter corners. I liked that with a few simple mods my 225 was as quick and more agile. Regarding the Jags I bought the 4.2 based on how much I like that engine in my 04 XJR. If I’m honest I like the drama of the gear selector in the 5.0 and a couple of convenience options that were available. Overall though I am thrilled with my new to me XKR. The XK definitely had fun usable HP, but I had to have the one that's trying to kill me every time I get in it and that's what I prefer. Even doing a tune a smaller pulley to get over 600hp. Drove a 4.2 XKR before I bought my 2015, but again, the 2015 was a bit more dangerous to me with practicality and money not being a concern. I do wish they would have kept some of the supercharger wine in the 5.0 the 4.2 has (completely gone in the 5.0), I actually like the shifter better in the 4.2 and those Senta wheels are the best looking period IMO. Whilst the 5ltr is and looks more modern ( it’s still beautiful ) it’s more twitchy to drive around town. All that power, 503bhp, in a 30mph limit makes it more difficult to keep the speed down! For me, I watched the video and pretty much agree with you on all your points. The only issue for me is that I don't like the looks of the 4.2l cars, the facelifted model is much prettier in my eyes. I think that the lower lights are the issue for me, the old style lights with the side vents are a big improvement, and it gets even better with the flashier lights.

My comment before watching: I've owned both - a 2007 XK DHC (4.2) and I now have a 2013 XK Portfolio DHC (5.0).
The 4.2 has a noticeably better ride, seems more agile and the seats go lower (more headroom) - less electronics underneath them.
The 4.2 seats are more comfortable if you have wide hips - the bolsters are further apart.
The facelift 5.0 looks slightly better (headlights and wider grille), has a slightly nicer interior BUT is MUCH more powerful.
The 5.0 has a similar performance to the 4.2 Supercharged.
Don't bother with the 5.0L Supercharged - you cannot use the extra power.
The 5.0 sounds different - as if the firing order has been changed - it 'pants' like a U.S. Muscle Car - the 4.2 sounds very "European". Both sound excellent and benefit from XKR rear boxes with open side valves and centre X-pipes. Fancy expensive exhausts alter the suave character of the cars (I've tried a few and always reverted to the Jaguar boxes).
The 5.0 is noticeably less economical (I've driven 1000's of miles in both and trust me - the 5.0 is about 10% more thirsty).
I love my 5.0L (bought for the headlight upgrade) but I miss the ride, handling and agility of the 4.2L. I am considering swapping out my 5.0L suspension for a 4.2's - it's that significant.
Note: - wheels are NOT interchangeable. The 5.0L rear diff is larger and the offsets on the rear wheels are different.
Special Note: the 5.0L facelift has 'leapers' in the headlights - but you have to hunt for them 😊

Having lived with a 5.0 XKR for over 7 years the best realisation is that the car is overpowered for a GT cruiser. Instant power requests at low speed just trigger traction control interference ... and it's not subtle either! The 5.0 XKR is massively traction limited in lower gears. Spirited cornering causes plenty of lateral movement on the seat as they're just not designed to grip the occupant. If you're wanting to cruise in style then the 4.2 is just fine and dandy. However, if you want a visceral experience and have a desire to go fast then a 5.0 XKR in dynamic-sport mode with DSC off gives a whole new animal. Match this with XKR-S seats and the car is a transformation. It can still do the GT thing but curves and straights take on an entirely new lease of life. The grin factor is huge. Add a dose of XKR-S X-pipe exhaust, 200 cell cats, supercharger pulleys and you've got a monster. You'll then need sticky rear tyres to resolve the traction concerns. Looking forward to the next decade with this car.

From what you say think a tidy 5L XK is the way to go with good history/provenance, but the more comments I read maybe the better one is a 4.2 XK, don't need and R. Would just love to bumble about and burble! lol

Sounds like you might want to try out the 5.0 XK actually, I like it more than the R, and has a distinctly elegant cruiser feel. Plus the 385 bhp is a significant improvement over the 300 bhp 4.2 for when you need better grunt

Love the vid. I bought the 4.2 over 10 years ago, and then bought a 5.0 a year later thinking it must be better while still owning the 4.2 and had it listed it on autotrader, but ended up keeping my 4.2 and selling the 5.0 as I simply loved my 4.2 and how it felt to drive. It simply is a drivers car, I don’t know what it is, but I just felt better in it. I cant explain it apart from it felt like I had more control and was more at one with the car and felt more oomphh in it even though officially it is slower. On a separate note, recently I am also watching the pricing jump through the roof, I actually cannot believe it’s now actually gone up in value over the last 5 years. I’m not usually lucky with my purchases but this jag seems to be my friend. Will the 4.2 be the E Type of the modern era? I don’t know, but what I do know is I love it far too much to ever sell it even though every MOT I ask myself is it now time to sell for a more practical car. I just can’t do it though. Even though I need an SUV, and after watching your vid and falling in love over and over again with mine, I have now decided that I will just buy a cheaper SUV and own 2 cars rather than selling my XK. Yes, I feel guilty but I love it too much. Even my jag service guy (who owns an E type) has told me how a good one in black won’t be had for less than 15k now, no one wants to let theirs go, and they seem to only die out due to accidents nowadays, and prices are creeping on the 4.2 much more so than even newer 5.0s. Fingers crossed this is only the beginning as nothing ‘affordable’ is like it out there. So, mine is now garaged overnight and I’m using it conservatively now to keep mileage in the 70ks.

Nice one, and on the point of SUV’s, I’m dropping a review of the Range Rover SVR tomorrow, which literally feels like the XKR of SUV’s. Jaguar motor putting out 570 horses, phenomenal performance and sound. A fair bit more expensive than an XK even used, but definitely the SUV of choice for existing Jag fans, even more so than Jaguar’s own F-Pace in fact

After having no idea what car to buy I gradually honed in on either Porsche or the Jag. Eventually settled on a 2007 Jaguar XKR and I couldn't be happier. I honestly don't know what I could replace this car with, it's pretty much perfection in every department. If I could single one thing out it's the overtaking launch; it's blistering and other cars recede at lighning speed in the mirror. But then there's the beautiful interior (white leather in my case) and wonderful exterior styling,, which I didn't fully appreciate until I washed it. The big problem is staying away from it: I just want to drive it all the time.

I'm in the Market for older one, having owned Fords' F150 Lightning that shared a similar Eaton supercharger, I'm leaning towards the XKR. But, & it's a big but, I'll be motoring long highway miles back & forth to South Carolina from New England. The mileage, the exhaust drone, & higher overall maintenance has me reconsidering the normally aspirated 4.2L. great comparison though! 👍

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  3 года назад +2

Jaguar actually worked extensively to make the supercharger whine as quiet as possible in these, and from my own experience did an excellent job. I will say though that if you do get the NA 4.2, as great as it is, you might find yourself wanting for some performance. 300 bhp is a little too low from my time in one.

Great Video thanks, I have had the 4.2 XKR stupidly sold it. I now bought a 2010 XK 5.0L what a car, I expected that it would feel like a downgrade but it actually is excellent, stately elegance without shouting about it. What I would like to know if what you think of the ride between the 4.2 XK and the 5.0? Awesome video comparison! Just what I was looking for, I am looking into perhaps purchasing an XKR 5.0 do you know what the service timelines are on the XKR's? Every 2 years? or 12,000 miles? And on average is it a three figure sum or four figure sum like the Maserati GT. Of course it's all dependant on what needs doing, just wanted too know from your perspective .Thanks

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  3 года назад

I don’t recall exactly what the interval number is on services, but I would say that unless a vehicle is either less than 3 years old or ultra low mileage, servicing is a borderline scam. As a mechanic myself, it rarely involves anything a regular garage can’t do for you, and becomes a glorified stamp collection. If anything check out the MOT history and receipts for work in general first.

@@HSGAutomotive Yeah that makes sense. That is the one thing that's put's me off a Maserati 4.7... The service cost's and the parts cost's as you mentioned in your comparison video. I know this is a relatively old video but I am trying to determine which MY XKR to buy. little back story; I currently own an L320 with the 4.2 SC, and an L494 with the 5.0 SC. So I am familiar with both engines. These vehicles are significantly different due to the chassis changes etc., and the L494 does have a little more grunt, but I believe a lot of that has to do with the 8-speed tranny change. I do however love the sound of the 4.2l, the supercharger whine usurps the exhaust notes of either of the engines, in my opinion. All that being said my commute to work is about 2 minutes, and rarely ever leave the small town I live in; which equates to, on a busy day out and about, a 10-mile radius. Lots of winding roads to drive, but also lots of police with nothing better to do than sit around and wait for enthusiastic drivers, so I would not be stretching out any vehicle I buy. Cars/bikes are more of a cathartic tool for me. I could spend 99% of my free time in the garage just messing with them. I do like the look of the older XKR a little more. I think with some tasteful mods they look incredible, which feeds into my tinkering fetish, but my wife/CFO would prefer I got something newer. She actually thinks out of all the options I should get an XKRS or an f-type. I like the XKRS, but it is a little over the top for me, and the F-type just does not appeal to me in the same way as the XK's. One option I do have is an XKR 175, harder to find, but there are some around, it would be a patience purchase. I do think, however, regardless of which I purchase first I will end up getting both somewhere down the road, just because apparently I am a hoarder per my wife. That being said I am still on the fence.

As a Bentley driver at heart I seem to need to continue to look for a 5.0, I prefer the interior anyway. So far I was not sure which one to choose, but given I am doing long motorway trips even the consumption should be less as the direct injection at least on our mercs comes into its own on long trips.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  3 года назад

If that's your style of driving and feel, I'd definitely recommend the 5.0 yeah. Of course testing both would be ideal, and I would strongly recommend trying to test a 5.0 naturally aspirated XK, the 385 bhp model. Even smoother and more elegant than the 5.0 R.

I watch this with great interest, as the XKR 4.2 was one of the three cars on my shortlist to replace my 350 Z as my winter daily driver and join the Alfa spider, Saab 93 convertible and Porsche speedster 356 recreation in the fleet.
so I need a sporty, fixed roof coupe, and along with the XKR I have narrowed it down to a Z4 Coupe 3.0Si and Cayman 3.4 S.
