Have had my 5.0L XKR for 10 years. Passed 199,000 miles last week. Pulleyed and tuned to about 600hp, it's the most reliable car I've ever owned in 55 years of driving. It's been tracked dozens of times and is still my daily driver and still a joy to look at and drive. Nice review on a spectacular automobile.

@4rzaluz living in Los Angeles where traffic is always burdensome, my XKR gets somewhere between 15-18 mpg. If you're on a highway without traffic you can get as much as about 28mpg. A 17 gallon fillup gets you about 300miles in city driving.

I have the same car also pulleyed and tuned to 610 HP. I am delighted yours is at 199,000, and still running reliably that reassured me it will see me out, as I love it and never want to sell it. I have a great Jag specialists who looks after my XJL Autobiography and my 5.0L XKR convertible beautifully both run beautifully and very reliably. I may start tracking my XKR for even more fun, given how bullet proof it seems to be!

    Superb, comprehensive video.
I have a 5 litre normally aspirated XK in the very rare caviar colour, with black interior and wood rim wheel---it's a Portfolio. I changed the wheels from 20" to 18" for more comfortable ride and have a full size (front wheel size) spare wheel with adapted boot.
I've had it a couple of years with NO problems at all and it is definitely a "keeper". This one will be with me until one of us expires! I have had a gearbox full service, new battery and other prophylactic jobs done and I ADORE this car.

I was lucky enough to purchase a 2013 XK 5.0 with an engine vibration that turned out to be a bent water pump pulley. Replaced it myself with a lifetime warranty unit along with the front and rear plastic bypass tubes, 185 thermostat, and 140 kpa resevoir cap. Now in process of working the bugs out of a Tesla style screen kit for the info-tainment system. Gonna be EPIC. This car is so very beautiful.

What an excellent review yours is Ed and for me, the final few minutes sum up what my experiences have been since I bought mine. Love the content! I’m looking at an X150 and an X351; both in R-trim with the 5.0 SC. Sadly, insurance for both models is outrageous in the US nearly $1300 for full coverage for 6 months on a late XJR LWB… a far cry from the $220 I currently pay for my V8 swapped G35 sedan. Coincidentally, I also have a minty AW11 MR2 for the summer; was very surprised to see one parked next to the Jag. Fantastic little cars 😄

Hello! I love these cars! Had one of the first then progressively worked up to an XKR Convertible. Also once had an Aston but the Jaguar was a far better car. Currently have an F type convertible, before that had the F type hardtop ( in my eyes better looking- but not in my wife’s eyes so have my original convertible back again).
However. My wife still looks back at our XKR with fondness.
I love my current F-Type (pre production model and a launch car) but, I think the XK was a much better overall car.

Have to disagree on the insurance (for me anyway), under £280 a year for my 2010 XKR, less than my 5.5 CLK! Goes so some what towards the road tax which is tad expensive. My average fuel consumption is 23mpg - have seen 31 on a good run so not terrible. Great cars though, currently buying my second due to some berk totalling mine while it was parked - whole drivers side, bonnet, a pillar and roof + two other cars :-(

I bought and fitted a blue tooth steaming receiver from USA to play music and radio of my phone (phone hands free still works). Also a roof opening system from USA that opens roof using the key plip. 3 pushes on lock button closes roof, 3 on unlock opens roof. 3 close/open flicks on drivers door n/s window switch puts quarter lights up/down for top down wind free high speed motoring (still best to have a deflector) Also built a dash cam into an old XJ interior mirror, it clips on in place of original mirror & has front/rear camera + reversing camera on mirror when in reverse and a digital speedometer in mirror (can be set to MPH or KPH) good for continent.

I've had both the 4.2l XKR and the 5L XKR now. These cars are ***highly*** dependent on good tires. The comment about them being tricky in the wet is a symptom of using tires that aren't good matches for them. I live in the PNW where it rains literally north of half the year. With potent all seasons chosen for their wet performance, the car is extremely planted and confident. I take a lot of country roads and oceanside cliff-side roads with big hills, sweeping banks, and sharp curves. I commute every week or so about 2.5hrs each way, so I rely on the car being comfortable, powerful, and able to effortlessly get me to my destinations in safety. The XKR does that unmatched.

Superb review and you seem to have similar taste in cars to myself: I have been wondering for years whether to buy a Maserati QP / 3200 etc or Jag X100 / X150. I think I've finally decided that the price of parts on the Maser would be too much for me to handle - e.g. I've seen dashboard switches in the high hundreds price range. The X100 is risky in terms of rust. I tend to do all my own work and, though it sounds like there are aspects of the XK I would need to have a specialist maintain, it seems like a 'do-able car'. My aunt bought one new back in 2006 - a convertible - which she pulled onto our driveway in. I asked could I have a look, being in my early 20s then and was horrified to see she already had squashed a jellybaby into the beige carpet..!
Anyway, great review - I'll have a look at your other videos later. What are you favourite cars in your collection if I might ask?

    • @Back_Road_Hero
      @Back_Road_Hero  Год назад

Thanks for commenting. The Maseratis will break your heart. Last service on the 3200 was over £4k. The network of Jag specialists, parts supply and owners forums are the reason to buy the x150. My go to car is the L322. It just does everything but the special one is the Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio. Makes your heart ‘sing’ like nothing else. My wife has sold her XKR and kept the 3200GT. Against my recommendation. But they were both her dad’s cars and the 3200 is the one she most associated with him. Heart ruling the head. Ed

Sorry I don’t but it’s usually to turn on the ignition but don’t start the car. Hold down the switch for a few seconds after the window has fully rolled down. Reverse the process putting the window back up again. Might reset the regulator that way. Ed

Have a look at Jacks latest video on his XK @number27 It can be wire brushed and treated since it’s non structural. But you could always use that as a bargaining tool. Ed

If it was manual I would be all over one of these. I don't mind a ZF8 box as that changes gear with paddles super cast, as fast as twin clutches do. So what is the paddle shift change speed like please? Cheers

To be honest it’s good enough but not lightning fast. It suits the GT nature of the car though. You’ll eventually just leave it in auto (sport) and ride the wave of torque. It has more than enough. Best advice is just go drive one. Ed

Great video BRH. Just wanted to comment on your entertainment system. $15 in the USA gets you a blutooth transmitter to your phone and comes in on a "dead" frequency on the FM radio. I have one and it permanently is fitted into the 12 volt supply outlet in the glove compartment. My phone pairs with it flawlessly and all my streaming and GPS map sound comes through the car sound system system. I stream Sirius/XM through the phone also as my 2007 model doesn't have XM fitted. On certain streaming systems you can get all the radio stations, including Radio 4 in the USA.The sound quality is as good as any FM signal. I now always stream, use the CD player on occasion and I have taken out the 10 amp fuse that controls the antenna so there's no noise from the antenna which is annoying when it's a convertible. One of the best $15's I've spent on this car.

I've been thinking of getting one of these as a weekend toy as they're stupidly cheap and I wouldn't be doing more than about 5000 miles per year. The only thing that puts me off is that I don't have a garage and it would be sitting in the street. And even though it's old and not worth much I feel I'd be doing it a disservice! Ach, it makes no sense...

Short answer is yes. The long one involves less trips to the garage, more specialists, but it’s arguably less practical for 4 adults due to less legroom in the rear. Either will make you grin from ear to ear. Ed

Like any Jaguar, they ruined i in details. I always wonder if Ford told them to tone the design down. The concept car looked miles better with slightly bigger wheels and clear taillights. The colour of the interior is so much more modern and would have appealed to younger customers.
The same goes for the X350 really. They had the Concept eight with matte, open pore leather and a panoramic roof. The wood was also applied in a more organic, modern way Together with bigger wheels, it really made the Jag a competitor for a Panamera, Quattroporte, Rapide, maybe even a Continental Flying Spur or a Range Rover Autobiography. The panoramic roof and open pore wood, is something that is offered on any luxury car in 2024, they would have been the only one if they introduced it in 2005. WIth the X350, they downgraded the XJ and wanted to compete with the S class diesel, by offering a Peugeot diesel engine that might be the most unrealiable engine in any Jaguar. The interior also oozes cost cutting with many cheap plastic panels.
Then they toned down the XF concept, gave it ugly, awkward headlights, and changed it to the headlights of the concept car with the facelift. They also shoudn't have offered the XF in beige with a beige interior and small wheels, ruined the image of a Jag.
Always too little, too late. Despite the best intentions and some great ideas. Caused by mismanagement, ego? Seems to happen primarly to british and Italian carmakers.
